jmaine:I just feel compel to add to your brilliant recrimination. It is a shame that most Nigerian youths exhibit rank ignorance on sensitive matters that deserve critical rational thinking. It has become disturbingly common to attribute everything to politics no matter how noble or hallow. Nigerian government does not feel obligated to fund public education in Nigeria because it does not patronise it. Take the healthcare industry, for example, where medical tourism has become conspicuous consumption, then you will appreciate the gross irresponsibility that the government is guilty of. Without the unmatchable doggedness and principled stance of ASSU, the government, thoroughly detached from the people it claims to represents, would privatise university education, making it impossible for the common man educate his children. ASSU, of course, has its own problems, like not submitting its members to uphold the ethics of the profession, defending erring, academically deficient, and morally challenged members. However, kudos must be given to the union for its tireless defence of university education in Nigeria. |

niyidenrele:No discerning person will challenge WAEC's right to produce result of an examination taken after its establishment since it has access to all manuscript of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate. What it means is that all Cambridge examinations are searchable in all centres of WAEC. However, in the case of one Mohammed Buhari of Katsina, not Mohammadu Buhari, few things do not add up. There is no record of his examination at Cambridge, which shows that he probably did not sit for the exams. What WAEC in Nigeria produced and validated in form of "attestation" certificate is the mock result produced by his school principal. Again, apart from having no record with the examination body, there is no photocopies of his secondary school certificate in his personal file or with the Nigerian military as he claims. If President Buhari truly sat for the said exam in 1961, all he needs to do is to ask Cambridge to provide INEC with written evidence that shows he wrote the exam, not compel pliable and tractable WAEC officials in Nigeria to issue him questionable "attestation" certificate, or hire 13 SAN to defend his right not to produce his certificate as required by law. |
Astrosmart:I think you are merely playing to the gallery. People with unpleasant attitude will always have a way to display what they possess --- whether female or male. It is also true that few guys have sometimes crossed the line of decency in conduct and speech. However, I disagree with you when you focus one gender alone, as if there is gender war on nairaland. I have seen ladies tear each other apart with the most uncouth words, even more meaner than the words used by some guys here. So, we should advocate for good conduct and eliminate foul and uncomplimentary remarks. |
Restructing shares similarity to fiscal federal which is the hallmark of every effective and efficient federal system of government --- the United States is a good example of what a federal system looks like. However, I understand and appreciate national and regional nuaunces and therefore cannot advocate a wholesale implementation of the American system without painstaking modifications that conform to local realities. Unfortunately, Nigeria claims to be a federal state only in theory; but in practice, it is a unitary state with a bloated, ineffective, irresponsible, and nonetheless strong state dictating to component units almost on everything. To local politics in Nigeria, of course every politics is local, restructuring is seemingly against the economic benefits of the north, who controls Nigeria's oil industry. Not because it is a bad policy but because the north has erroneously socialised itself to believe that it existence is directly tied to oil. So, whether Buhari or Atiku, I don't see any of them implementing a policy that places the south ahead of the north. To me, it sounds like an economic cum political suicide. Atiku might be a better president compare to Buhari who does not possess the capacity for critical thinking, giving his tested managerial acumen, broadmindness, and comospolitism. Nevertheless, restructuring Nigeria, in my view, will appear to be the greatest rest of an Atiku government. |
He need (s) more of you indeed. |
mikaj:They might be intelligent, but definitely not brilliant. Memorising when learning is required is a huge disservice to education. |
"Cramming" is a nonstandard word to use for a person aspiring to become a scholar. It is even more alarming since foreigners have access to this platform, and might be wondering what the heck "cramming" means. The standard word that denotes the act of temporarily storing vital information briefly in the brain should be "memorising," not "cramming". |
You surely have a whole lot going through your mind at the moment. This is certainly not the best time to be a woman. As for your guys, you know them better, continue to carefully and consciously interrogate their characters. Good luck in your screening exercise. |
Diamond23:Oops! Don't worry, you haven't given out enough to harm you. |
Diamond23:Hmm. We are from the same state. Which part of Anambra? |
Diamond23:I am not a priest, barrister, but being a philosopher is certainly what you don't need formal training to become even if you have a degree in Philosophy. So, maybe a philosopher might be an appropriate label; something you equaly fits in. About being grammatically savvy, I think the trick is study, study, and study. And for being expose, I think someone pursuing a third degree is duty-bound to be objective and broadminded. That is the only way to contribute meaningfully to knowledge and humanity. I gleaned through your profile and discovered to my pleasure that you an Igbo lady. Which state are you from? |
Diamond23:Thanks for your comment. The matter has already been settled to the Op's advantage. It appears that his fears and uncertainty were the consequence of his imagination. He proposed to his girl friend, she accepted without much hesitation. In the end, she has decided to marry a Catholic. |
A scion of the "super" and "superior " ethnic group in Nigeria. The only snag is that, all hype about them don't produce anything meaningful. |
Congratulations! You deserve to be very happy for securing your girl's marriage affirmation for two obvious reasons. One, it is certainly a huge sacrifice on her person given your description of her disposition towards her church in your previous post. This is if we discount the pressure that might come from her family members and friends. For all those who leaped towards her defence without proper understanding of her choice and opinion towards the Catholic Church, I think her unsurprising decision to marry a Catholic calls for sober reflection. Two, I think you must have learned one or two lessons on the significance of holding strongly to your view in the face of overwhelming uncertainty. And finally, an English adage says never cross a bridge until you reach it. If you had not asked her, you would have keep speculating what her answer might be. Once again, Congratulations! |
realtalk19:True, though, you still have your life intact. That is the greatest gift of life. Don't dwell too much in the past. |
Shugavee:Haha. Haba! Thank you. |
ozoneymcm:Dear Friend, there is a wide gulf between your thesis of argument and what is written in Matt. 12: 47-50. In the said passage, Jesus expanded the scope of His earthly family to include everyone who listens to His teaching and does the will of His Father in heaven, and not solely His mother, Mary and his disciples. Therefore, I suggest a little more research on your part concerning this issue. |
realtalk19:I have gone through all comments on this heartrending and tragic tale and agrees perfectly with all your positions -- including your articluted reprimand of female members that support cheating. Nevertheless, I see a woman in pain, who wishes for a better world, and who believes fate wasn't fair to her. Indeed, it is well, even in well. |
Shugavee:Your middle-of-the-road opinion on Catholics' stubborn reverence and honour to Mary is fascinating, and requires a comment. If truly you agree that praying to Mary as sanctioned by the Bible is appropriate, I wonder why you suddenly have issues with making a statue of the person to whom prayers are directed to. Note that the key word here is honour, not worship. We honour our parents as commanded by the Bible, but we don't worship them. So it is with Catholics and Mary. If you remember Jesus' first miracle at a wedding in Cana, then you will appreciate the immense intercessory powers of Mary. This is what millions of billions Catholics all over the world benefits from. |
Princeofnigeria:I have to reiterate that beneath the negative and hurtful comments directed towards Catholics and their faith are engendered by ignorance and an attempt to regurgitate highly popular but erroneous notions. I know it is difficult to completely dispel this myth. However, any opportunity to engage in robust and honest discussion that is aim to strengthen our understanding should be encouraged. The earlier we desist from my-church-is-better-than-your attitude, the better for us. If you are conversant with your Bible, you will know the prayer Catholics pray to Mary was gotten from the visit of angel Gabriel. There is no woman honoured by God in the whole world like Mary; that is why a full chapter was devoted to her in the Quran. Someone whom the Bible says all "generation has call blessed" is truly blessed, and deserved to be honoured as Catholics do today. So beloved, if you have not start calling Mary blessed note that you have biblical injunction to do so. |
donstan18:It is unfathomable to me why your nicely written post that was clearly a response to the endless and needless gender warfare in Nairaland was avoided like a plague. Perhaps it was imbued with messages that shattered their comfort zone, and concurrently tasked them to be responsive and responsible. Or is that the degree of veracity it contains make a reply unattractive? My stance or take, however, remains that all genders should be the captain of their soul; the era of buck passing is in the far forgotten past. |
stiffmeister:When bigotry is wedded to ignorance the inevitable consequence is the product of your baseless diatribe. Again, your lame and dismal description of Catholic Church shows you don't possess the faintest idea of what church teaches. Yes, Catholic Church has a different style of worship which unfortunately irks many pentecostals, and actuates them to make unguarded and unfounded comments about what they barely understand. In the Catholic Church, Jesus is the chief cornerstone and the symbol of highest veneration. Take it from me, we worship Jesus and Jesus alone. You merely joined the bandwagon that traffics ignorance and hatred. A lady you purportedly invested with the claim of "high spiritually" has been in relationship four year which involves sexual intercourse, yet she has "higher spiritual" rating because she worships in a different church, other than Catholic Church. Don't mistake noisemaking and shouting as the only prerequisite for knowing a true Christian and effective means of evangelization. Jesus didn't use these methods during His earthly mission. We have very few orthodox churches today with an unremitting mushrooming of pentecostal churches that claim to possess the ideal way to make heaven, yet we are inundated with societal ills of epic proportions, some of which are perpetrated in churches. If Pentecostalism is the answer as you erroneously claim, salvation gospel which was ordained by Christ and not prosperity gospel, will be their fundamental doctrine. In all this needless fanaticism, I believe that my faith in Christ Jesus, accompany with my good deeds are the only valid visa to secure heaven. Thank you. |
ImaIma1:I called you an "attorney" because of the unassailable manner you presented your case, something obviously lacking in the Op's emotion-laden categorisation. If the Op had done this way, we won't ever get to this point. |
ImaIma1:The job of attorney perfectly fits you very well. Someone asked the Op a question that emanated from her unguarded and needless comments, which she couldn't answer: that if the table is reserved, would hold such opinion about her relatives that are surviving? Nobody has the power to force her to do what she doesn't want, but we should be alert when implausible narrative is employed to justify what is wrong. I am being caution to "calm down" while your vindicating defence ignores the stereotype which compels the Op to profile her husband's relatives she barely knows. I am not surprised you fail to mildly chastise the Op, while pointing out many options available to Op. Maybe it is one of the ways of defending the womenfolk. |
ClassicQueen:I find it shocking and unbelievable that the mother of a two months old baby has perfected a plan on how to maltreat and frustrate the daughter of another woman. Call it whatever you like, you are guilty of premeditated violence, and what you need to get to work is the arrival of the girl. Someone asked whether you would have hold such baleful and crude notions about the girl and her family if they are your relatives? |
pansophist:Is "high-likely" a new word; or the product of your grammar wizardry? |
SammyEk:We are now aware that you made first-class honours. On the other hand, you have successfully depict that you have challenge with comprehension. |
GrammarNazi1:There is no contention on how to use the preposition "for" in English language. And, the information you provided did not state that "asking for" has another meaning than the one we are aware of. The phrase "I am asking for a friend" has only one meaning in English language. |
GrammarNazi1:The phrase "ask/asking for" has an entirely unrelated meaning as used by you and the Op. I am surprised you were unable to detect the solecism. When the Op wrote she is "asking for" a friend, she meant her enquiring is on behalf of a friend. But that is a gross misuse of the phrase. If you ask/asking for a friend, it means you want to speak to them, not to embark on enquiry for their sake. |
GrammarNazi1:Multimillionaire, not multi millionaire. |
victorian:The last paragraph of your properly articulated and brilliantly delivered post proves my hitherto hunch correct. Nonetheless, it will be unfair to disagree with the points you listed: about the decadence of moral in our society, fictitious and falsified character, bully inclination of many members here -- from both guys and ladies --, the ungodly materialistic assessment of human worth, etc. You made reference to money worship as a depiction of moral bankruptcy in Nigeria. This is correct and factual. What I can say is that money worship is the pass time of the black man, even though he has repeatedly proven incapable of instituting the structures that will ensure adequate and unfettered flow of wealth, like the white man. The white man began this journey decades ago, used every continent of the world to advance his quest including Africa, but at a point the futility of the exercise became apparent and human values and dignity was substituted with quest for making wealth. Nevertheless, a large percentage of the western world still suffer racism, and the reason, in my view, is that development and civilisation which are products of highly refined culture have eluded the black man. About practising what I have preached, I can say without fear of contradiction that the 'sermon' on Nairaland wasn't spurred by deceit or necessitated by devious intention. Having said that, however, I am the most imperfect being you can ever think of; so it is entirely inappropriate to lay claim a sainthood. This conversation is becoming refreshingly robust and intellectually fascinating. |
