How on earth is the Op going to attend to these endless stream of people with financial challenges this Christmas? Little wonder Nigeria is ranked the "poverty capital of the world." This is apparently an indictment on the political leadership of this country. |
Good article. But too wordy and poorly punctuated. |
Arthurity1:"Proper English" demands you use capital letter "E" when writing/typing English. |
sleeknick:Congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. However, I am not comfortable with the way you address yourself. Self-awareness is the defining characteristic of purposeful existence. This fact is probably what motivated Socrates, a Greek philosopher, to make this evergreen statement: "An unexamined life is not worth living." You are an Igbo man who hails from Etche community/town. No matter the region, state, local government you are from, or the dialect of Igbo you speak, we are one people, with a common goal and aspiration. Once again, congratulations! |
Kentrasso:The fact that you are seeking validation from a faceless forum like Nairaland shows that a part of you is unsettled about how you deftly manoeuvred your way to marriage. You obviously need someone to talk to; a platform to pour out some troubling thoughts. However, is it really necessary? Note how people of your gender have quickly leaped to your defence forgetting that nobody wants to be treated badly. Even when they are goading you to move on and pretend as if nothing happened, you still feel duty-bound to explain what transpired even when it reveals the degree of desperation in you. The same quest to get ahead made you to almost marry someone you don't love and not proud of. Well, we all wish good things for ourselves, including the medical doctor whom you never truly loved -- but nonetheless lead on. |
Your story makes an interesting reading. It also reveals the mentality of a average Nigerian lady, and by extension, our irrational love and respect for the western world. I think you got it thoroughly perfectly planned all the way. Our preference is our vision. In most cases, what we like we called good; and what we dislike we call bad. It is extremely difficult to give listening ears to the medical doctor, or seek ways to iron out a workable relationship with the American guy is having regular contact with you. My thesis is: you were completely overwhelmed by the prospects of moving to America with a guy you barely know. In fact, a part of me believes that you dated both of them concurrently. Do not use social media lovey-dovey appearance as a yardstick to measure the propriety of someone's character. Nevertheless, happy married life! |
I am not a fan of godfatherism in politics becsuse it is an undisputed symbol of societal decay and lack of strong and effective institutions. Since the Nigerian situation is far from ideal, a raft of vices, including godfatherism, has been elevated to art form. However, it is unjust when people from same party with similar positions are treated differently. I cannot be a supporter of Rochas, God forbid. In fact, a part of me rejoices at his political ordeals. I have nothing but searing odium at his little-minded quest to establish a political fiefdom in Imo. Of course, aping the short-sighted example of Tinubu, whose unbridled reverence for material possessions has seen him swallow up Lagos in an orgy of covetousness. While another part of me is inevitably outraged at the brazen display of partiality in the APC. If the likes of Tinubu and el-Rufia were given free hand to dictate political events in their states, how on earth do we explain the treatment given to governors Rochas and Amuso in the same party? In fact, el-Rufia broke a standing political principle by fielding a Muslim-Muslim ticket. Yet no word of rebuke has come from the APC, or the leper-style treatment metted out to these governors. This is clearly in-your-face favouritism. In paraphrasing Danfodio, I believe that a nation can endure unbelief, but at no cost will injustice triumph. |
Maybe you are destined to marry a struggling man. This is what many ladies would never brook. However, running away from it will only take you a step closer. My worry is that these men -- according to you -- tend to appear mean, shame, and desperate. Better remain single than entangle yourself with a man who sees nothing in you but only a wad of naira. |
There are different indexes of measuring intelligence, and the ability to effortlessly master grammar rules and conventions, is a conclusive proof of being intelligent. English is just a language like any other, however, what scholars use to measure superior or inferior IQ language-wise is the degree of mastery of the language. It does not mean that those who are slow, or incapable of mastering these rules are dumb. On the contrary, it demonstrates that those who display deep levels of understanding have high quotient of language proficiency. This is an undisputed display of intelligence as it relates to language. Nigerians, especially those with tertiary education, have no justifiable reason to join the "mediocre herd" who impeach why people should be encourage (and, sometimes, chastised when they goofed) to speak and write flawlessly English. This is true for all British colonised states, that had adopted English as their lingua franca. And for the fact that English is the language of international politics and diplomacy. It is the first medium of communication in commerce and business, in communication, aviation, sports, etc. |
LuvSwollenPussy:You can't speak Queen's English if you don't live in South-east England. So, Queen's English is a distinct type of English spoken in a limited geographical portion of England, not the entire country. |
Yea, that their skin colour is different from ours doesn't mean they are whiteThey are not just "more of Arab"; they are 100 percent Arab, not white. |
Dduchess:Madam, your husband don't have or keep malice with you, it is aptly called SNUB. A snub is a disregard for someone's presence or importance, which also manifests in physically avoiding them. Malice, on the other hand, is a desire to cause someone harm, injury, or to see them suffer. The trajectory of your story has fundamentally changed, this time portraying your attitudinal weakness and deficiency. To put it nicely: you are far from being a saint. To your marriage: you know your husband better than anyone here. So, against all odds, make your marriage work. However, I think there is something in oga's mind he is not telling you. He is self-evidently angry and depressed at the moment. Madam, I think there is something hidden, something both of you dread to discuss and iron out. |
victorian:Nairaland is a wonderful space. We are richly blessed with personas of different temperament. I have been reading and laughing, enjoying this tread which is dreadfully assialed by comments that are plausible and those that are downright off-the-wall. The polemic surrounding who or what a CEO is made me to quickly embark on a little research to reassure myself that my knowledge of the term is still apt. The change in information and communication technology has had an overwhelming effects on the meaning and usage of words. So there is need to re-check the meaning of CEO lest one peddles ignorance. A source says a CEO is "the person with the most authority in a large company." Another states that a CEO is "the executive with the chief desicion-making in an organisation or business." Note the range of meanings this term has, which makes a limited, narrow usage or understanding insanely prescriptive. Since you have a company -- whether small or large-- that is registered with Cooperate Affairs Commission and have people working for you, you are a CEO. Bear in mind that my sources did not state that registering a company is a prerequisite for its owner to be called CEO. The practice of registering companies has different motives, and is not closely related to the honorific reserved for the head of the company. Because even sole proprietorships, who register with CAC are legally called CEO, because they own a company and have people working for them. A company can be big or small, while the person who controls the day-to-day operations of a company is its CEO. |
TarOrfeek:The advice you gave to the grammar-challenged damsel is equally appropriate for yourself. It is either "these things" when writing in plural or "this thing" when writing in singular, not "this things." |
This tread has been carefully avoided like plague by most Nairalanders due to it touchy characteristics. There is also trepidation that comments deemed off-putting might attract puibshment such as a ban. As the poster glowingly noted, "It is a complain tread." But is it actually a complain a tread? The poster started on a solid ground, acussing a famous moderator of being petty and thin-skinned, and resorting to self-help where intelectualise debate would have been the ideal outcome from divergent opinions. Let the superior argument previal is the guiding principle of debate. The claim of being a "complain tread" falls flatly with the raft of infantile, ad homien attacks, including a threat to physically beat up the moderator. This disposition for failing to stick to the issue, portrays a pent-up anger aggressively looking for suitable medium or platform. To be fair, I am an advocate of debate garnished with respect and knowledge. Under no circumstances should insults, naming-calling, and disrespect be part of debate or argument. I align with the poster if the sole reason of suffering a ban is as a result of disagreement between her and the said moderator. I believe moderator should be models of good behaviour, not vindictive people who can't tolerate different, and even conflicting views. Nevertheless, to reveal the true intent of the poster, she threaten even the owner of this platform, while concurrently lobbying for the post of a moderator. If you are made a moderator tomorrow, it is clear you will be worst than the people you are chastising. |
DonX001:The gulf of difference between a cub and a puppy is a self-evident testament of your inability to tell a believable lie. Anyway, I enjoy reading stories whose degree of veracity are not difficult to discern. Nevertheless, lions don't give birth to puppies, only dogs do. |
I clearly understood what Freeze meant, but his choice of words failed him. Building a church with one thousand seater capacity is good, but nonetheless, not necessary in our prevailing socioeconomic turmoil. What the church is saying is that it has up to one thousand worshippers in Abuja alone, who are to use the property. This is nothing but an unnecessary religious show-off, which is agonisingly common in Nigerian Pentecostal Churches. Dunamis needs a majestic and magnificent church in Abuja, but one with staggering one thousand capacity. |
UyaiIncomparabl:The answer you provided to the immature damsel is brilliant, apt and plausible, but the concept of "butterfly effect" was used out of context. The concept literally denotes a chaotic system in which little alteration or changes in substance can produce large-scale and unpredictable outcome in the entire system. |
EzeIgboNwaChukwu:What makes you think you are not a pedophile for abusing a girl of 14 year-old? More shocking is your apparently lack of scruple to announce it on nairaland. I am highly embarrassed on your behalf. Stop child abuse! |
DateMynd44:Haha. Will you carefully read the trash you have written? Blunders everywhere. It is "Am I", not "I am". Next time, use "advice", not "advise". |

I have problem with your usage of language, since you claim to be a teacher. First, you come across like a careless writer - zero respect for capitalisation and punctuation. Is this the way you write in class? Second, the usage of this phrase, "Since I am forte in the above mentioned subjects..." is syntactically and semantically wrong. Forte means "a strength or talent." It can also mean something one does better and is interested in. How would it sound to you if I write in this form: "Since I have strength or talent in the above mentioned subjects." Suitable and appropriate synonyms to use are versed, grounded, good, etc. not forte. |
Sleekfingers:It is unfathomable how you successfully loaded lots of ignorance in just two sentences. Let me attempt to unpack them. First, sharing physical border with states is not what makes a state not to be landlocked, but inability to have access to large body of waters. Second, in this sense therefore, northern Nigeria is landlocked, if you remove the Middle Belt region. Do remember the exploits of European explorers such as the Lander Brothers and the Scottish doctor, Mungo Park? In summary, these men discovered to European business and financial sectors that River Niger has a direct link to the Atlantic Ocean. The south-east, though, is not landlocked as you erroneously stated, due to the presence of River Niger. Due to Nigeria's politics of economic strangulation, the river is yet to be dredged despite the fact that the people of the south-east are renowned for international business that requires a functional port. In a nutshell, you can have access to other continents, using River Niger that is connected to the Atlantic Ocean. |
PRESENTATION:You must mean fuse and socket, brother. |
Some people are very dense and grossly uninformed on this platform. Someone naively wrote that the "official language of Germany is Dutch." Germany speaks German, not Dutch as someone erroneously stated. German is the lingua franca of Germany. |
I don't think it is wrong to praise white people for all their achievements and contributions to the world. But there is a snag you must note: white people don't treat people of other races the way that treat their people. They propagate double standard: one for them and the other for the world. Majority of them are inherently racist. The Chinese and Japanese, for example, have discovered this callous trait long time ago and have made tremendous efforts to be at par with them. Sadly, the black man has accepted his low technological and civilizational disposition as natural and is not willing to make amends. While other races seek ways to promote and project their culture to the world, the black race is obsessed with disengaging and destroying it culture in a futile attempt to somehow become white. So when your friends get uncomfortable that you praise white people, it is a reflection of their inferior status and a refusal to accept their dismal place as blacks. |
LightQueen:You have written like someone with functional brain. However, we mustn't ignore the fact that every society is sharply stratified along social status which reinforces how we think and behave. Yet individual preferences -- just like you have stated your opinion about dating -- occasionally shatter this glass ceiling. Even though we agree it is wrong to look down on people based on their occupation, everyone has the right to choose whom to date. Maybe the advocacy should be on polite refusal of advances. |
MXrep:The word "detribalised" is a disesteem term. It was used by the British to mean the process of removing "tribal" dispositions from Africans. In other words, it means making them "cilivised". Please stop using it to denote someone whose opinion is not coloured or excessively influenced by allegiance to his ethnic group. |
krissy123:It seems obvious you like to hear yourself talking (or in this sense reading your write-up). Nobody denies the availability of good ladies, what is undeniable is the paucity of their number. Our society is inundated with a lot of ladies whose thinking start and end with fashion, and do not possess the qualities you listed. And to be frank, a good and well-nurtured lady is an unquantifiable asset to her husband. So, what guys bewail are the scarcity of good ladies and not their unavailability. |
JoannaSedley:I am already on my way out. Your advice should be civil and direct without sounding rude and uncouth. |
JoannaSedley:Do you really have to type these words? They remove the kernel of human feelings in you. |
JoannaSedley:Do you really have to type these words? They remove the kernel of human feelings in you. |
It is simply a revelation of the dismal degree governance has degenerated to in Nigeria. The government grudgingly gave in to the popular, legitimate, and unwavering demand of labour not out of patriotism and commitment to good governance, or because it understood the significance of improving the welfare of labour. The organised labour's heroic triumph over reactionary forces is a consequence of the fear that allowing strike action might jeopardise the political fortunes of the government in next year's election. An exasperating but pupolar report reads that Buhari "endorses" 30,000 minimum wage reached with labour. This is supposed to be a democratic dividend in an oil-producing state that is ironically the country with the lowest minimum wage in the world. This caption apparently depicts how low the government is willing to descend in search of political capital to shore up its fast depreciating rating. I am at this point compel to ask who streamlined the term of reference used for negotiation? Was the goverment team negotiating on their power and discretion? The fact that Buhari has to approve an agreement that supposedly emanated from his office shows the level of disconnect between Buhari and his team. |

Destroyer can’t that also mean Conqueror, or must the name be thought of in a wrong context?
