Health › Re: Jack Ma's Donation To Fight COVID-19 Arrives Nigeria by nextstep(m): 7:04pm On Mar 24, 2020
Everylasting thanks to Jack Ma.

So no donations or equipment from churches, upon all the seeds sown. No useful measures from our various apostles and prophets.

It took a non-religious man, from a non-religious society, to make these life-saving equipment available to one of the most religious countries in the world - one that cannot help itself, but instead bows heads to pray.

I hope this lesson is not lost on us as a people.

But seriously, we should be enjoying from the reduced price... I wonder when the hardship will hit with this slashing of crude price.

Food › Re: Choice Of Food Stuff Amid Coronavirus Lockdown by nextstep(m): 9:34pm On Mar 23, 2020
Yam, palm oil, garri, egusi, dried fish, crayfish and salt.

I can survive with these in different combinations for 1 month. If I was in charge of an emergency food bank for a city, these are my top picks.

If you want to be extravagant, add dried onion, tinned tomato, elubo, kuli kuli. Simple, relatively cheap, and nutritious. If the season is right, grow some veggies in my backyard.

You don't need rice or spag. No need for bread, sugar, or tea. Indomie is quite salty (high sodium) and not wholesomely nutritious in my opinion, and can be dangerous to your health over a long-term.

Rice has little fiber and is horrendously expensive per kg. Same with spag. Don't need beef or any other meats.
Family › Re: I’m Pregnant For My Sister's Brother-In-Law. I’m Scared To Tell My Sister by nextstep(m): 9:24pm On Mar 23, 2020
I'm going to get crucified for this, but it's not like I'm suggesting things that don't already happen.

The quickest, no skills needed way to get money is to do runs... I'm being morally agnostic. Runs for a month, and use the money to fund the needful.

People say keep the baby... with what earnings? There are also people on this board who like saying shit like: "why bring a baby into this world if you can't take care of it". Well, here's a good chance to put those arguments to use: they can't afford a baby right now.

Don't abort? Why not? Another child raised before parents are able to take care of it. OP may still have to do runs once baby is born. She's not the first, and won't be the last. Better one month runs, than 10 years.

Detractors: unless you plan to put money into her account, either to keep (or not keep) the baby, please keep your sanctimony and "you shouldn't haves". Doesn't solve the problem, but only makes you feel good.

It's all prayers till science finds the cure. Then prayer gets all the credit.
greatreality:
And who gives the science the insight to find the cure if not God. Don't be Pharoah who under estimated the power of God and get the wrath of God.
It's this kind of circular reasoning that makes me label people schizophrenic: why go through the trouble of creating and allowing disease, just so you can give people the insight to cure it? And the insight to viruses didn't come for all of human existence (according to Christians, 6,000 years or so) until 1800s. Just for the sake of glory? Why wasn't that same insight given to gorillas, dolphins and elephants who also suffer from diseases? "Because we're special, made in his image".

Seems like a very human centric and self-centered rationale. Then when we question the circular logic, we're threatened with: "don't test God", "and He works in mysterious ways".
Business › Re: Coronavirus: Folorunso Alakija Gives Prophetic Prayers by nextstep(m): 6:38pm On Mar 23, 2020
Prayers have not been shown to be effective against the virus. In fact, prayer has never been proven to be effective against anything. It just gives people something to cling to. Thank goodness some wise people in the 1800s realized this and concentrated instead on microscopes, antiseptics, antibiotics, etc.

Family › Re: For How Long Should An Engagement Ring Be Worn? by nextstep(m): 6:30pm On Mar 23, 2020
OP, first of all congrats, and I pray that it will end up in joy for you.

First, I'm sure you knew of his situation in the earlier days of dating, so that should be irrelevant now. As in, you saw that his family is staying with him and that he's responsible for them all... why would marrying change that? Did you think they all suddenly start working and get their own place? Reason it from his point of view and take that as part of the deluxe package you got.

Second, if this was a concern, did you two talk about it earlier, before or soon after engagement? What's wrong with living with your husband's relatives? Many many people have done it and it didn't kill them. Sure it's stressful and you're going to have to play politics and tread carefully, but it's not the end of the world. On the flip side, you could have started out just two of you in the same house, then his family comes after you married. Eventually people will move out as their economics improve (or the fights get too much grin ), so it's not forever.

Third, tell him - once you're totally sure (two days late is not enough time to be sure), that you're pregnant so he can start planning. Nobody knows what he will decide to do, but the longer you delay, the worse the outcome, in my opinion.

Fourth, are you working (as in, you're not a student)

Greatzeus:
Rubbish,
Humans were humans from start, they never evolved from anything. Everything were created and wonderfully made by God,I know I am.
Much respect to all the medical practitioners all around the world who couldn't be with their families because they had to endanger their own lives to save Corona virus victims. Salute
The sole evidence of this point of view is a written account by scholars of their time (albeit inspired by their Creator). A multitude of evidence around us suggests evolution over a long period of time. I don't mind conceding that God created a system of rules, and then let the system play out (hence star formation, planets, primordial chemicals, life, evolution eventually leading to humans).

The world is not 6,000 years old. Bible was written in a way that made sense to people at the time. If God should inspire people to rewrite the Bible, it would read a lot like a scientific textbook, based on the knowledge that people have today.

Yes, shout out to the medical practitioners... I have a few in my family and we're hoping they continue taking all the necessary, scientifically-based precautions, and not relying on prayer to a God that makes wonderful things like humans and the viruses that kill them.

Nonsense science try to compete with God's knowledge. Only a fool will believe this.
Science is quite surprisingly compatible with God's knowledge... animals on the 5th day, humans on the 6th. If you replace the word day with "billions of years", it's the same story.

Humans were created from clay... which to me is compatible with "modern humans emerged from a more basic form".

From a purely agnostic point of view, the Bible describes creation and evolution in terms that were understandable to humans at the time. If the Bible were to be rewritten today, perhaps it would talk more about genes and microbiology (which are understandable to today's humans). If it had been written 100,000 years ago, I doubt we'd even see some of the relatively modern concepts like "manger" or "being a shepherd" since humans were not keeping animals at that time.

It's good this news is coming out, but nobody should blame the corrupt leaders for doing what is in their nature. I blame Nigerians who chose to put thieves in place, hailing thieves, and even killing themselves for these thieves.

If I could go back to my young self, I would tell him to skip uni, and spend those fees on buying okada for hire purchase. 5 years doing that when I was young would have set me up for life.

Fidelismaria, definitely don't do that lol, especially as a beginner

Pick one and start from there, easiest is probably Python, but you can do your research to see which one aligns the most with whatever you want to do. Then when you have the basics down, branch out from there
Yes... just like in University, one covers different courses simultaneously without problems.

Fidelismaria, the suggestion by ibkayee to start with Python certainly has merit. However, I've also come to realize that you can gain a better understanding by wetting your feet in all.

What programming language do you suggest I start with?
In Nigeria, web-based languages are the thing:
Python, JavaScript/Node, PHP, Ruby, Java, Rust

You should start with them all. Spend 1 week on each, and rotate. All the tools to develop are freely available.

Politics › Re: Why We Can’t Sell Petrol At 125/litre – Marketers by nextstep(m): 4:19pm On Mar 20, 2020
For those complaining, reason this:

You already bought your inventory at the higher price weeks and months ago. Some are in your tanks, and some are futures contracts (where you promise to buy at a given price in the future). Government comes along and says you should sell at a lower price.

Why should you agree?

Would you accept it if you were selling foodstuffs? What about if you were selling building materials? Why should petrol marketers be exempt from common business sense? Is the government going to refund them the difference in cost at which they bought their supplies?

NNPC is selling at 125... of course they've already paid the higher price to offload those tankers weeks and months ago. So government is going to have to absorb the difference someplace. They won't say it, but otherwise where would that money come from? Perhaps from a loan in the future, or higher taxes, but dammit, Nigerians will pay for it one way or the other.

If you don't want to buy at 145, go and spend 3 hours in queue at NNPC. Those three hours lost could have been spent making money (eg. for transporters). Time is money, and money buys you time.

Sadly, if SARS should encounter any of them... they will be immediately suspect due to their appearance.
As an occasionally bushy-haired programmer, I can say there's remarkable freedom to think about real problems if you're not taking too long on grooming. Not that one should be dirty, but I've worn my hair bushy and face unshaved for weeks.

MrBrownJay1:
you danced around the subject yet didnt answer the simple question... so let me rephrase and pretend you didnt understand the question:
did stopping eating these animals SOLVE THE PROBLEMS (of mad cow, bird flu, swine flu, ebola etc?!
I didn't understand the question, but yes, stopping consumption (and interaction) of these animals solve the problem (of it spreading and increasing infections of others):

Those who did not eat infected cows did not suffer from mad-cow disease. Banning the consumption of cows by cows also solved the problem.
Killing infected birds/pigs, in addition to farm sanitization; as well as removing potentially infected meat from the market solved the problem.
Ebola is no longer a pandemic, due to people understanding how it spreads - and more importantly - its source. Not messing with bats, including eating them, has solved the problem.

If someone already has the various diseases, then they have it - they can't un-eat it or un-sneeze it. With luck, they will be among the percentage that survive.

Keep in mind these viruses are latent and natural to their hosts. They have not been erased from existence. What we now understand is how to prevent their spread. This is what I mean by "solve the problem". The problem is not that the virus exists, it's that it spreads and kills more people than the strains we have learned to live with.
