asanwafo:
Did the rule forbid lecturers from marrying their student?
It's a tricky problem: marriage between lecturer and student is not forbidden, but relationships are frowned upon because of the power imbalance. Of course, you can't get to marriage without a relationship.

If a lecturer is serious about a girl, the appropriate thing would be to wait until they don't have power over a student (over her grades, or her graduation status, or anything academic), so that the relationship would have the appearance of being between equals.

But in general, the rule is supposed to discourage cases where professors abuse their positions to pressure people (boys and girls) into doing things (either bring money, or bring body). It's also to discourage a student receiving unfair favor because of their relationship with the lecturer.

Politics › Re: Shettima Yerima: Tinubu Is The Last Person North Will Hand Over Power To by nextstep(m): 6:00pm On Oct 08, 2019
All this demand about all parts of the country for "hand over of power", or "it's our turn" is really disturbing. If it's not Arewa dem, it's MASSOB or IPOB, and sometimes Oduduwa... as if the electorate doesn't have brains to decide.

Let us please vote for the right people... hunger doesn't care where the president is from, abeg. We have representatives for each state and district, chopping money mercilessly without doing things for their people, which shows that no part of Nigeria has a monopoly on bad leaders. We should choose right people...

Curses is not the solution. Use your philanthropy to help fund legal prosecution of lecturers on behalf of the complainants.

AwkaetitiBabe:
Increase the tax of the rich to Carter for the poor. The more richer you get, the higher paid taxes.
But who hires the poor? All the workers of Glo, Forte, Dangote, Peace, Innoson, and so many... who will hire them if the rich are taxed more? In fact the rich should be given tax-free incentives so they invest more in this country. We need more jobs and the government should tax their wages. Moving money from rich to poor without an increase in productivity is much more harmful.
Politics › Re: Buhari: Few People In 5 States Control Nigeria’s Wealth by nextstep(m): 5:49pm On Oct 08, 2019
Sigh... another excuse for the tribalists to fight, instead of seeing the message.

The 5 states that produce the most wealth are the most industrialized. Simple.
Government should be encouraging industry in the other states. Making - not trading - is what creates wealth for most countries.

Yes you can trade, but all wealthy countries trade what they made... not what they bought from somewhere else.

If every state could have just 1/4 of what Ogun or Anambra state has (not even to mention Lagos), we would not be talking the same thing.
Education › Re: Ghana University Reacts To BBC Video: No Evidence Of Sex-for-grades by nextstep(m):
Fair enough... I have to agree to the logic of the arguments that there was no offer of sex for grades in this particular case.

However, I feel solicitation is against the rules of conduct of the University, and should be heavily discouraged.

It's sad, but you two have to break up. Better have a few weeks/months of pain, than to knowingly birth an SS child who will be brought to suffer, and possibly ultimately die after both of you have struggled for two decades.

Trust Nigerians with thier hypocrisy as if the don't have sex too.
Did you mean: "we all have sex too", or "we all molest girls against their will"?

Because the first is off topic (we're discussing sexual abuse by authority figures), and the second simply isn't true.

Girls have been complaining??! To who exactly, if I may ask??!...
In addition to the fact that it's been common knowledge - girls complain to their friends and family, and in some limited cases, to the authorities and staff. I present to you some articles that were published after the complaints got to the right ears:

https://guardian.ng/sunday-magazine/cityfile/sexual-harassment-and-sex-for-grades-some-self-evident-truths/

These are just a small sampling of published articles before this latest exposé, not counting the anecdotes of girls which have not been published.

Both Unilag and Foursquare Church are pretenders... girls have been complaining since, yet have refused to do anything. In fact staff that should protect the girls choose to disbelieve and even warn them to shut their mouth. Only now when wind open fowl yansh do they start "disassociating." and "suspending" angry

I hope the guy gets criminally prosecuted, not just dismissed.

Christianity Etc › Re: Are Natural Disasters God's Way Of Punishing The World For Sin? by nextstep(m):
What we call "Natural disasters" (floods, no rain, hurricanes, earthquakes, asteroid impacts, volcanoes, etc) happened on this planet way before humans showed up.

There are no humans on Io (moon of Jupiter) but it's very volcanic. There are no humans on Jupiter, yet it has a HUGE, continuous thunderstorm the size of Earth (Great Red Spot, 350 years and still storming). Jupiter was also hit by massive asteroids in 1994 (Comet Shoemaker-Levi). There are recurring quakes on Mercury that produce huge fissures. All these things would kill 10s of thousands of humans were they inhabited. Should we also assume these events are punishments for non-existent humans in those places? Not to talk of billions of stars and planets in our galaxy alone (of which there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe).

These events will continue to happen when the human race is no longer. Earth itself is doomed to be overheated and swallowed by the Sun as the Sun loses the mass it needs to keep the gas together (see Solar death). We have gas giants and supernovae that detail the spectacular demise of stars all over the universe. Our star is not special; neither is our planet; and for the record, neither is our species.

Politics › Re: Sowore Calling For A Revolution In Nigeria In 2012 (Throwback Video) by nextstep(m): 5:07pm On Oct 03, 2019
Why are we complaining about the government and the system we implicitly support. We hail the highest bidder; we don't fight for our rights; and nobody is willing to go to jail or die for the country. All we can do is argue and dab from the safety of our phones. While people like Sowore and Kanu rise up but are jailed, their supporters become scarce to find.

I'm guilty of the same.

The young of Europe and the Americas fought the establishment to create the developed countries we're seeing now.

This rebuke of Nigerian fears by Fela still rings true, and until we're ready to fight, we can't enjoy what other countries are enjoying.

My people self they fear too much
We fear for the thing we no see; We fear for the air around us
We fear to fight for freedom; We fear to fight for liberty; We fear to fight for justice; We fear to fight for happiness
We always get reason to fear:
We no wan die; We no wan wound; We no wan quench; We no wan go
I get one child; Mama dey for house; Papa dey for house
I wan build house; I don build house; I no want quench; I want enjoy; I no wan go
Ah!

Army man go whip your yansh

Programming › Re: What Are The Differences Between Programming And Coding? by nextstep(m): 7:44pm On Oct 02, 2019
Compare "authoring a book" to "writing a book". No difference. On the other hand "publishing a book" is understood to be a different thing.

Some may say that "authoring" includes planning, organization, etc... and that "writing" is the act of putting words to papers, (or typing into an editor).

Even the act of "writing" is further broken down into prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing, which might be done by different people.

In the modern context of writing software, there's no difference really. Coders program, and programmers code.

Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Accept This Job Offer Or Continue Job Hunting??? by nextstep(m): 4:51pm On Oct 02, 2019
35k is small, but it's something to start. The alternative is what? Spending money on transport to go to interviews without job at the end of the day? I say take the job... and never stop searching for a better opportunity. You can also learn about the business during your time there.

fidet1:
Don’t take it, it’s modern day slavery
BamBella:
35k a month?? shocked Working 7am to 6pm from Monday to Friday Saturday, that's slavery.
To those saying working in Chinese factories is modern-day slavery... compare what the average Chinese worker in China is earning to create that USB charger that you buy in traffic for #500 (which wholesales around #300!). The average wage in China (until quite recently as wages have risen to the point manufacturing is moving to poorer countries) was barely N50k/month, in a country with higher cost of living but lower cost of business. When you calculate it, the wages are almost on par for the same factory work.

They work long long hours for low pay, which is why the world can buy cheap goods. Yet, that is how they built their economy. Life was not rosy for Chinese factory workers, so I would not expect the same for Nigerian factory workers if we're to get to the same level.

First and most importantly of all, a woman is a complete human being deserving of respect whether she’s attached to a man or not. That sexism has to stop. Right now.

Real sex? Do you even know where the clitoriss is? A woman would probably be more likely to satisfy her than a man would. Sex is individual and all adult consenting sex is real sex.

A woman can also make her own money.

Manly strength? That’s a beautiful sexy thing. But not everyone wants it.
Very well said... I'm big on this first point about (dis)respecting women based on whether they're attached to a man or not. Big ups to your other comments too.
