Funny enough, so Igbo language is now a taboo here? No wonder, most of you here can hardly name the neighbouring towns/villages to their hometowns - a gang of Lagos based Ndigbo who speak Yoruba more than Igbo. If you loose your language, your identity(culture) is gone. I'm more worried about the future of Igbo language than an Eze in republican Igboland .

Lagos is filthy as the word is. If that is how clean a City with annual GDP of about $50 billion can be, i'm sorry i cannot buy that. So what's producing the perhaps over 20 billion mosquitoes in that city?

After Alaba, Ladipo is the second most important market for Igbo traders in Lagos. Personally, it smells like ethnic cleansing in the making. In a very filthy city like Lagos, one wonders why Ladipo is being made a scapegoat in this particular situation.

A candid observation devoid of prejudice from Mr. Nwokedi. As i wrote sometime ago, Enugu state started from jumping like a frog, and now it's doing a Ben Johnson in infrastructural development without the typical air of arrogance and loud noises associated with Nigerian politicians. Bob-Manuel Udokwu's career started in Enugu in the late 80s. As moderator of Radio Nigeria Enugu programme 'Kata Egwua', he was one of the most popular voices on the station . Alongside Jevas Chukwuemezia and Linda Mmenakaya, they made my days with their Sunday programmes. Congrats to Nwa Ogidi Idemili!!

Boy's High School Awkunanaw, and even the bookworms of CIC Enugu, were somewhat later infested by National Nike's sports craze. Then Principal, Rev.Fath. Charles Ikeme(Odor) encouraged his boys to be more active in sports. Army Day Secondary School Gariki Awknanaw was specialist in Junior football championships. They equally won many cups. The performance of Enugu Universities at the national University Games was uneventful. Most undergraduates were often more interested in obtaining their degree than in sports. St. Patrick's Emene had a few sports success . Phillip Osondu(Zanza)played many times for Umueze before becoming Eaglets captain. Chukwuma Nwoha(Nwoha Camp)was another Enugu school success story .

Let me pay homage to other schools in Enugu state that gave young people opportunity to use their God given talent. National Grammar School Nike, Enugu was a defacto sports power house in the East. Not even the Onitsha 3(CKC,DMGS,St.Charles)can boast of developing young Igbo sport talents like Nike. Eziama High School and Ngwa High School all in Aba, also tried but still perform under Nike. Let me give it to Boys' Secondary School Umueze Akwunanaw, for having tried many times to win matches and cups from Nike. I think they won the old Anambra school's cup twice, beating Nike in an epic final at the then Temporary Stadium Enugu. That was in late 80s/early 90s.

Vasco Da Gama football club of Enugu was equally instrumental in giving youngsters who could not make it to Rangers a chance to sharpen their skills. My former school sports prefect, Steve Mogbo(Barry White)became Vasco's captain later. Places like Polo Field, Phoenix Hotel field and Ngwo park were designated as 'Egwu Mgbede' pitch for Coal City's footballers. Unfortunately, this sports culture in Enugu is dying gradually due to neglect. Polo Field is gone, Ngwo Park is now a cassava farm, and the pitch at Phoenix is also history. Even the huge parcels of land owned by Enugu state sports council have been shared by politicians. What does one see in Enugu today? A hoard of pot-bellied men and women disturbing traffic on streets around Okpara Square on weekend mornings!

Enugu people love sports; apart from Dominic Nwobodo and Obe born Christain Chukwu, Enugu state is home to many former Rangers International players such as Kingsley Ogbodo, Jude Agada, Ndubuisi Nda, John Utaka, among others. Jay Jay Okocha still praises Enugu for making it possible for him to actualize his dreams as a professional.

As many of us can remember, Innocent Egbunike and co won the first ever Olympic medal(bronze)for Nigeria in 1984. Ezinwa brothers(Davidson and Osmond)also followed the footsteps of Egbunike when they brought silver medals for Nigeria in 1992 Olympic. The duo schooled at Nsukka High School, but later changed to Nike.

Be it in athletics or football, Enugu never stop in producing champions for the state and Nigeria. No where is this zeal to win in sports more evident than at National Grammar School Nike, Enugu. Nike was often blessed with principals who were very much interested in the school's dominance of other high schools in sports. One man who mirrored this motto of the school was Mr. P. O. Chiedozie. He nearly with his games master nurtured Nigeria's firsts like Innocent Egbunike, Chairman Christain Chukwu, Silvanus Okpala, Charles Okonkwo, Kenneth Boardman , Okey Isima, etc.

Time to take a look at sports development in Enugu state . As Nigerians look forward to seeing Super Eagles lift African Cup Of Nations once again, it's pertinent to review how it all started in the home state of first Eagles captain to have won the cup for Nigeria. Grassroots development of sports in Coal City and its environs created atmosphere that gave Ndigbo champions after the civil war. Primary and secondary schools in Enugu metropolis encouraged and also rewarded talented youngsters who were eager to represent their schools in different competitions organized in old Anambra state .
