FamilyRe: How Do You Deal With A Close-minded Spouse? by Ninapha(f): 12:55pm On Dec 14, 2010
mutter:
Ujujoan,
let me give you one advise you would do well to take to heart.
Most women say allot of things but what happens on their home front is totally different.
This " I can never take it, " it`s all lies, sometimes unconscious lies, Most women take allot of poo.
You know all these things you have written so far, I cannot fault this man in any way.
Look at it this way- are two not to be one. So why do you not let him pick the tyres just because you are the one driving the car.
My husband is that way. He takes allot of decisions that, I sometimes felt, should actually not interest him. Sometimes it is something so trivial like the soap we use, or he insists on not replacing the dishwasher. Sometimes one would thing he is totally in control. However with many real important things he gives me my freedom to do it my way.
Well what I did  is when I know he would say no, I just go ahead and buy it without telling him first. When he asked I would tell him I mentioned it, but he was probably not listening to me as usual. After sometime he confronted me, on this tactic and I told him, I knew I could not do it when he said no, so I decided to opt for the lesser evil of doing it without telling him. I turned the tables on him telling him he had instilled so much fear in me that I had to go sneaking behind his back like a child. Well I got what I wanted without hurting his ego. Over the years it has became easier.
I realised that we women sometimes take men so seriously. I hardly get into arguments again because I avoid serious confrontation but mostly use teasing and laughter to get my way- When he gets angry, I hug him and tell him how much I live him and make jokes about it. Later on when tempers are calmed we can talk it out.
You need to learn the secret of moving a man to think that your decisions are his. You need to learn to succumb sometimes. In a relationship compromise is the key word. There are things we compromise and a few we don`t. Words are very powerful and when you learn to speak his language, communicate on his level, he will lean to listen.
You have a caring man wanting to change your tyres. You did not accept that offer? You hurt him with what you did. Letting him know you can handle it. The tyres he wanted, would have done it too.
Certainly women have a better intuition than men but a woman needs to let a man take decisions and also stand by him when the mistakes are made.
I believe that when this man realises that you also respect his opinion, then he will relax.
By he time you accept some of his ideas, I am sure that when you tell him I know you are right but I would love to have it this way, he would not have anything against it.
So what you need to do now, is to apologise to him, for having slighted him.
You might be loosing a good man for nothing.
I know it is hard when one has been independent, to adjust to a man, but you can learn to do so. Men are like children in many ways and when you understand that, you can cope better. When you really love, you can find it easier to make compromises.
Honestly mutter, i love this advice cos most problems we face in marriage are as  result of power tussel. As much as I agree we all have right somewhat yet the man will always be the man, the more reason we expect them to act to their positions in so many difficult situations in the family.  I will also re-emphasis that Uju should check her strenght since she is still not married to the man.

Dont marry whom u cant tolerate. QED! Learn how to leave with his excess or walk out.

Always arranging things in place, cant stay in scatter-scatter house grin grin grin sometimes my brothers would call me into their room as if something serious to be discussed, its just idea to make me see the have scattered their room, then while we are discussing i would be arranging their books and all that grin grin grin then if I happen to say No to a thing ooooooooooooooooooh everyone would shout cos its like thats final statementgrin grin grin when i keep quit, they are like hope she wont say no cos they believe i am calculating in my brain what to say.

Having multiple husbands is as old as having multiple wives. It is called Polyandry. In a lot of places where this is practiced the woman marries two or more brothers at the same time and it is sometimes called fraternal polyandry. It is common among the Polynesian people.
johndoe200:
It is culturally driven. People can adopt any practice that they feel comfortable with. As for God he already supports this, or do you think that God resides in Nigeria alone?
I am not suprised! You again?

Then I'm afraid you are not yet ready to get married. Most men have ego problem (Me Included) and reason for this can be explained by our cultural beliefs and whatnot.
You are also talking about 2 different things entirely. Being close minded doesn't necessarily equate to being controlling.
I could be close minded but still allow you freedom to choose whatever rocks your boat as long as it doesn't affect me.
Men would most times tell u the truth about their attitudes and believe me Jay bee and MBJ are saying it the way it is. I still insist you check your inner strenght cos it wont get better in marriage. This is this man and u either accept him and work how to cope or walk out, else u will be more fraustrated in marriage.
FamilyRe: How Do You Deal With A Close-minded Spouse? by Ninapha(f): 1:23pm On Dec 10, 2010

You have to tenses along the line of:
I see your point but what if we do it this way.
I accept your opinion but don't you think doing it this way might work
I know you have made up you mind on this but i was just wondering if it might work if you try this
Let's try my way first and i will apologise if it doesn't work then we can do it your own way.

The point is you have to allow him feel he is the man as you don't want to crush his ego but still get your point across at the same time.
Thats the main issue, Ego, ego ego. Well ia m happy you are not married yet so shine your eyes and check your inner man. Check your strenght and work it out. my last coin! tongue

Silence and patience works so also is a lil'bit of strong head. I think CC had a disclaimer attached to her posts too  wink
That single act of forcing her on a drink she clearly said she does not like is alarming.
Silence and patience does not work all the time neither does strong head.
Maybe she needs to use both  undecided
grin grin Ify Nwannem.  i no easy!  I agree she needs both, thats why I said make sure of what works at the appropriate time.  Stronghead no be smarshing bottle na! infact  Stronghead works well with most people like that but one must be calm about it.

I remember once heely shoes became a taboo and you know what i had to flood my rack with heely shoes and each time we have need to walk, we will be miles apart grin grin cos i would be slow while hubby would work like soldier. Well he gets in before and would answer the question where is your wife, oh she is almost here, at home he would talk and talk, no response and he knew for sure what my conclusions are.  Now he has adjusted and we would laugh over it sometimes.

@ Ninapha
You know some people are blessed with the spirit of patience . . . .i'm not one of such people! But one thing I know I've been blessed with is a good head, and I love using it.

I beg to diagree with CC on some of her suggestions here, If you have been there, you would understand it.  Its a kind of attitude that weakens you, sometimes, you are confused as whether you are the one doing it wrongly.

Ujujoan, you and I know there are different times and reactions with people with such character.  Before now have you not tried to flex muscles? has it worked out.  so long i advocate for patience, you have to be yourself in some cases that will affect your person.  Like the drink issue, he never forced the cup on you rather was more like boring you with nagging, In such situations, I would say, I wont and thats it, its my life and personality here not his.  At worst he would get angry but atleast, he understands I  know when to do things my way.  Do you know how I look at it,  You only wanted to play a good girl.  There was no need smarshing bottles, ofcourse u know its unlady-like.  Here My "GOLDEN SILENCE" would play well for me cos i would say no and keep quit.  All I wish is that you learn the act of equal-cushion reaction to his attitudes.  There are times Silence would work well, other times, give definit answers and at other times, take him unawares, do this without his consent too yet when he nags, use silence to teach him.
FamilyRe: How Do You Deal With A Close-minded Spouse? by Ninapha(f): 4:30pm On Dec 09, 2010
Ujujoan:
@ Ninapha
What if your silence only makes him feel like he's right! If or when he makes a mistake, he simply dismisses it as 'part of life' and puts up some annoying cliches like 'we'll try again or nobody's perfet'!
I want to state that it worked for me. he wont go dismissing his failures for a long time. Except when the mistake occures he does not look for solution, whenever you see that he is in a tight corner give that your idea. If he says its "part of life" let it be and dont go nagging over it. Sometimes he would tell you " its better to try and fail than failing to try" watch it. Untill he reaches his point of untimate fraustaration, he wont hear you out.

Its not about being weak or assertive on your side, Its about ego and upbringing on your partners side.

Close-minded as in annoyingly inflexible and unreceptive to new ideas!!!

It’s often very frustrating trying to get them to see things from your own perspective because they are incapable of that. They tend to hold fast to their ideas, whether right or wrong, and any contrary opinion is often ignored.

How do you intelligently deal with them? undecided
Just learn the vocabulary of SILENCE even when he sorts ur opinion, make it scarce, allow him make his mistakes overtime. Like someone adviced, dont argue with him rather allow him have his way and then key in to his mistakes to make ur mark.

Your idea? hold them untill there is a mistake that ur ideas can correct, if the problems is fixed with ur ideas, he would start giving value to ur ideas.

You boss may not want u! she may just be scared of your intentions towards her neice. Do u think u have the character to make her trust you.  You dont expect her to jump up for such news when she is not sure of what u want.

You have made ur first mistake by starting the relationship the way u did. If eventually it does not lead to marriage be sure, u are fired, if it does be sure to be loyal to her always.

Now, its beyond your pleas and loyalty to make her get relaxed, Let your girl and her mum do the talking, just be yourself at work and make sure you will not intentionally break the neice's heart.  You love her dont you?  Its time to prove it and that alone would put u on a safer situation and pls, also think about getting a new job if its a private company but if its more like a large  organisation, the worst is a transfer.

If its for love you are courting her neice, go on but if its  infactuation, be sure the whole family would fight u for a course someday.

Dont  ever agree to have anything to do with ur boss romantically, that can never, i reapeat never save you but would only leave u at a cross road.

Re: Jonathan Got Me Tripping With His Facebook Comment
GEJ claims to be loyal to his wife who has no kids for him when in the same sentence he is proclaiming 'my children'

Now this is too dumb to be seen on Nairaland forum.  So if his first wife does not have children with him, he cant have children by adoption or in agreement with his wife to marry another wife who can give birth for him. A man says I have children and u are saying he does not.

For his statement, He stands to be challenged,  Once there are facts that he has propeties abroad and children studing there we are good to confront his statement, afterall, IBB is a master in "digging deep"  Atiku was VP when GEJ was DG And Governor, Let them arise to challenge him.

We are waiting the manisfesto has just started!

Bawss1:
It is rather condescending that GEJ is using the fact that his kids school in Nigeria to score political points. They are probably in Nigeria because they are still youngsters, when they reach the age for university education I can bet that they will not be in schooling in Nigeria. . . but all of this is besides the point. Nigeria's educational system needs to be overhauled, what are his plans to address this; thats what we should be discussing here.
Maybe u wd give it to someone who instituted 419 as a national code and someone who is using his loot to establish American Uni in Nigeria.  Someone who has the audacity to tell Nigerians he pays million Dollar to his American lecturers when he had opportunity ofturning nigerian Uni into What he desired. who could not account for PTF, Privatisation Proceeds but was busy buying every nigerian parastatal in disguise and establishing American uni.

If care is not taken Nigerian wd soon be renamed " Rebublic of AtiBan"

tkb417:
if that portion is true, then he is not loyal to his wife, and by extension, i wont bliv the rest of his statement!!

It goes like this. Nigeria's leaders tend to see themselves in the role of emperors instead of high level employees of the people - it is an ego problem. Of all the candidates so far, both of these guys seem to have a good perspective in this regard - that is unless their actions are helping the people it is of no use. I believe that unless any leader gets this right he will ultimately fail.

Again I am looking at the choices b/4 us. Which of these contenders do U prefer?
