And instead of tackling the 'peculiar' problems head on, they are satisfoed with kicking the can down the road. Very soon our debt profile will creep into territories not seen since the Obasanjo era debt cancellations. To spend your precious forex on what is essentially consumables is just stupid. Until we restructure we will continue to have peculiar problems and remain poor and indebted.
I wouldn't necessarily say the 'peculiar' problems aren't being tackled; whilst I am of the opinion that much more could be done, if we must be realistic, we must understand that certain issues cannot be solved overnight, or in 2 years. If not for anything, we've seen an effort to ban/limit the importation of rubbish products to encourage local production. We've also seen some efforts being put in to boost agricultural production (e.g. the anchor borrowers programme to boost rice production, the fertiliser initiatives (including the partnership with Morocco) to boost local fertiliser production etc. We've also heard the noise about building standard railway links across the country.

The above efforts are things which if completed can take Nigeria out of the stranglehold of its dependency on crude oil; these initiatives can boost local production and reduce imports of certain essential commodities. So I wouldn't blankly say the govt is satisfied with kicking cans down the road.

Regarding spending forex on 'consumables', unfortunately we have no choice at the moment and that is exactly the reason behind the current economic conditions. A problem like that cannot be changed overnight, and with a prevalent recession, it would impossible to do anything positive without borrowing.

I agree with you. But many of us know they have not done enough on this. How do you reconcile the fact that govt makes some people pay differently for fx at "official rate"?
While it makes no sense, I would assume it's in a bid to ensure easier access to forex for more important things. For instance, we all know the importation of fuel is more important than the importation of fabrics; but at the end, the methodology for prioritising what is more important than the others is where the real debate should be.

Let them not hoard anything, saturate the market with the currency, and you'll see the price drop.
You cant give what you dont have. Saturate the market today with everything in the reserves, of course the price of the dollar would drop today. But the real question you should ask is, if you empty your account today for food to be plenty in thine house today, what will happen tomorrow when you no longer have anything in the reserves to even pump the little bits anymore?

I fear for what will happen to Nigeria economy in 5years time.....

This methodology of pumping is so scary, superbly devastating on the long run.
1. Reducing the demand for forex (by Nigerians consuming locally made stuff)
2. Increasing the inflow of forex (by boosting exports)

Above are the two main things that can fix the economy. Until Number 1 & 2 can be achieved, there's really nothing that can be done to stabilise things besides pumping forex into the economy. The main problem we've had for decades is that instead of proactively taking steps to achieve 1 & 2, several governments have just settled for the lazy option of pumping forex, and it becomes easy when forex inflow from oil is high.

I don't understand this country
Whenever I hear US fed chair Yellen talk, it is always about how low the interest rate in banks should be.
Should it be low or even kept a tad bit lower. That's how you grow the economy.

But here emefiele and that finance minister, all they know is pumping dollars
I wonder how we came to employ the dumb fu..cks

They should just employ me as well, I did economics in secondary school. cheesy grin
The interest rate issue has been talked about a lot. Nigeria's economy has peculiar problems and cannot be directly compared to the US where they can easily adjust interest rates at will.

All the ones they injected into the economy before now has it changed anything? Keep hearing of wrong policies all the time
What is the right policy?.... The only right policy is for Nigeria to increase its forex supply (i.e. boost exports) or for Nigerians to kill forex demand (i.e. start using only locally made goods).

I strongly believe that Naira will have a significant triple digit growth/appreciation when the government stops providing forex subsidy to meaningless religious pilgrimages and having a meaningful direct currency flow agreement with countries like China and India who are Nigeria's major import/Export partners
But that isn't done anymore, I mean the subsidy to pilgrims.

This is outright irresponsible and heartless for the government to still deny two days later that no one died. One would have expected the governor and even his wife to visit the bereaved family and call for an investigation.

How much is the price of cement as at today ? You need to tell me how cement in Nigeria still defies the law of demand and supply...

And you think Dangote is interested in solving Nigeria economic woes ?
Whatever the case, the beauty of it is that Nigeria would be left with no options than to buy petroleum products drilled and refined in Nigeria. Even if Dangote decides to yank the prices up to his benefit, Nigeria would still be saving more than half of the forex it expends annually because petroleum product importation currently takes up more than 50-60% of Nigeria's forex. I'm sure you know what would happen to the value of the Naira if demand for forex drops by over 50%?... When the Naira appreciates that much, irrespective of whether Dangote choses to be a heartless glutton, it will still be a win-win situation for Nigeria and Nigerians when Naira value shoots back up to N150 to a dollar or even higher.

The way this project is being heralded and anticipated by the present government gives one the feeling that the economic hope of africa's most populous nation hinges solely on this refinery. Nigerians wake up!!! Dangote refinery wont solve our myriad of problems!!!
A functional and efficient refinery of that magnetude would solve a myriad of Nigeria's economic woes.

TravelRe: Air France Leaves Lagos-bound Passengers Stranded In Paris by obailala(m):
Air France now has a reputation for this sort of thing; suffered the same fate with them in 2015 while flying to Lagos. Flight was about to take off, developed some system fault, taxied back to the dock, spent 3 hours in the plane while they struggled to fix it, still no victory. A mini protest occured since they wouldnt feed hungry tired passengers and wouldnt open the damn doors for us to go out. Eventually left the plane after waiting 3 hours, and had to spend another 7 hours at the terminal before another plane was provided.

I think this is an inevitable issue in the aviation business, but Air France doesnt seem to behave differently from Arik and co.

Your reasons cannot appeal to my intellect, it is a wastage of time. This is the same reasons given by Yaradua men for the establishment of Federal University of Petroleum Technology in Kaduna abandoning PTI at that time. I have visited Bayelsa severally, Yenagoa is a small creek town, diversion of coastal railway map to Otuoke will still bring infrastrural development to Ijaw people in Bayelsa as the railway will not fly & land in otuoke but must pass through coastal villages & islands. Yenagoa people have no problem but let us see the rail line first. There is economic justification for rail line to otuoke because it benefits the maritime & oil business activities in the area & that of Nigeria.

We are talking about national interest you are bringing in sentiment. So, tomorrow if somebody from Akwanga or Lapai or Madala becomes president, the first thing is to start to divert national project to the area irrespective of rate of return on investment or cost benefit analysis.
I'm sorry to say this, but your sense of equity is appalling. You say Otuoke is a small creek town whose economic activities would be boosted by a railway; I agree with that, every enlightened person agrees with that. But then, you vehemently refuse to acknowledge that Daura is also a small agrarian town that can also benefit from a rail line? huh?! undecided

You obviously have a very deep prejudice against the north which has totally clouded you rationality. It is a waste of time engaging you in an argument.
