babaolofin:
Bayelsa is a creek state. Only one local government is on the mainland, the remaining are surrounded by water (sea). There is Niger Delta University in Wilberforce Island. The Federal University in Bayelsa has justification being the only Federal University. The location is for Bayelsa people's discussion & not a national issue. What justification for rail line to Daura under this economic downturn.
First of all, GEJ diverted the coastal rail off-route from Yenagoa to his village. So kindly tell us what the benefit of a rail line in Otuoke is?.. I can tell you for a fact that Daura is an ancient commercial city whose commerce can be revived by a robust transport infrastructure like the one Buhari just approved. So now, tell us what the economic value of Otuoke is?

Secondly, did you just say a federal university is a Bayelsa matter and not national issue?.... So biko explain to me how a railway extended to Daura in Katsina is now your business?...

Lastly, if you think not having a federal university in Bayelsa is a good and fine reason why GEJ should place a federal university in his town, kindly enlighten me on what is wrong in Buhari approving the first modern railway connection to his state and his town?... You think you are wise right?.. Don't let your hatred for Buhari swallow your objectivity.

babaolofin:
You have to be objective in your reasoning. Action & reaction are equal & opposite in science. There must be an action demanding a reaction. There is no any economic justification for that rail line other than for the people of Daura to feel his impact while in government especially this second chance. He must have something to present to them. If this is done when the economic was buoyant, some of us would not have complained.

This is the system used in the military era.

Obj in his time never did this kind of thing though people reminded him how he failed to deliver the road he promised as military head of states. The University in Otuoke is the only Federal University in Bayelsa & Bayelsa is entitled to one. At the inception of Yaradua administration, he approved the establishment of University of Petroleum Technology in Kaduna while PTI Effurun, Warri was rusting away. It created a lot of tension between the Niger Delta elites, militants & Yaradua as the Niger Delta people demanded for PTI to be converted to University of Petroleum, at last, they won.

It seems the Northern system of governance is still the same military or civilian. Despite the supports, we are watching.
Are you aware GEJ also diverted the coastal railway map off-route from Yenagoa to Otuoke his home town?. Can Reno please tell us what the economic importance of Otuoke is to deserve such a major branch-off of a multi billion dollar railway line and also a federal university in Otuoke?

Now I will answer the question, there is absolutely nothing economically wrong with extending the railway to Katsina state (Daura) or even Otuoke. There is also nothing economically wrong with extending the coastal rail to touch Yenagoa. The fact of the matter is that Nigeria is in dire need of a boost to economic activities and the importance/benefits of establishing a robust railway system which connects as many towns and cities and states as possible can never be overemphasised.

Same way in which Fashola was called all sorts of unprintable names when Oshodi was being cleared. What matters most here is that the project shouldn't be left abandoned.

how did we get to this point. past regional leaders from southern Nigeria have a lot toanswer for. and our children should curse us if this generation refuses to make amends.

we have the railway connecting Lagos to the North . we have another connecting port Harcourt to the North. what about one connecting Lagos to other southern states. isn't this delibrate? Lets assume our past leaders from the south failed us, what is the current generation doing to amend this anomaly?
I think the reason behind that was that the white colonialists who built the Lagos-North amd PH-North didn't care about internal local trade in Nigeria. From the southern cities, the colonialists could easily load their loot into a nearby ship and sail off to Europe. But they needed an efficient means to transport their loot from the north down to the ports, reason why they built those north-south lines.

Real question is, what have Nigerian leaders built since 1960?

New Lagos-Kano rail line: can someone educate me please?

The maps below show the current rail system in Nigeria
With that, you can see that we already have a Lagos-Nguru line (which includes a stop in Kano) and a PH-Maiduguri line (in addition to other shorter connections between these lines and the Warri stand-alone line)

So my question is this: what is this new Lagos-Kano line that is being approved for construction? Do they want to have 2 Lagos-Kano lines or what?

I am a bit confused and would do with some education on this matter.

Thank you.
The existing rail lines have Narrow Gauge tracks. They are old and outdated and can only support slow trains (not even up to 50km/h); reason why the present train journey from Lagos to Kano takes 3 days, the trains coukd go faster but the tracks dont support higher speed.

The newly proposed rails are Standard Gauge Tracks which is the current standard globally. They can support train speeds of up to 150-200km/h.

According to reports coming in from Owerri, Imo state capital, there was a gun battle this morning following the demolition of popular Eke-Ukwu market. The incident reportedly happened following the massive deployment of soldiers around the market since yesterday evening.

A young boy is said to have been shot dead by the demolition squad, according to reports.

It will be recalled that the State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has been in a protracted move to relocate the market from Douglas road to a different location of the city. The governor has presented his case citing the traffic problems constituted by trading activities on the strategic "Douglas road" as one of his reasons.

Owerri indigenes have argued that the market is part of their traditional heritage which should not be tampered with but rather be upgraded with today's shopping mall facilities.

How does that invaludates what Reno said?
Reno is an educated, enlightened and sound man. He has only come up with this bad-belle driven criticism purely because of hatred for Buhari; and he sure knows this sort of thing would appeal to his numerous followers. Did Omokri bother to ask his boss this same question when GEJ proposed to also extend the Lagos to Kano rail up to Daura?

You asked what the economic importance of Daura is; I do not know the answer to that question, but what I know is that there is nothing wrong if the rail modernisation plan touches as many states as possible; such could revive and boost economic activities in currently economically dead cities, and that's exactly what Nigeria needs now.

By the way, the coastal rail line goes from PH to Yenagoa and then takes a sharp bend towards Otuoke before it returns and heads for Warri. Biko what is the current (or even historic) economic value of Yenagoa?... Did Reno bother to ask his boss GEJ this question when he was still president?...

All APC members back then were locked outside the NASS with the PDP members inside proceeding to commence a charade impeachment process against Tambuwal. Of course some agile APC members, including the minority leader then (Gbajabiamila) had to shamefully scale the fence to get into the chambers and stop the process. Meanwhile the remaining APC reps locked outside (including the speaker Tambuwal himself) were teargassed and chased away by the police as they tried to gain access into their office. Such was also the legacy of the amiable GEJ whom some deluded souls now tout as a saint.

President Goodluck Jonathan has pledged to connect all the 36 states of the federation to railway line, if re-elected in the March 28 elections.

Jonathan made the pledge in Daura on Saturday when he paid a courtesy call on the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk Umar.

He said that that the railway lines, when operational would ease transportation of goods and persons to all nooks and crannies of the country.

Jonathan said that the railway line would boost economic activities of Nigerians.

omenkaLives:
Good evening all.

It is no longer news that ex President Goodluck Jonathan indirectly took a swipe at the current administration in response to her plans to clamp down on inflammatory and hate speeches that seem to have become the norm on our social media space. His comments suggested that during his regime Nigerians enjoyed freedoms only comparable to those obtainable in the most advanced countries, especially in the West.

Especially, his fans and supporters had a field day doing what they do best, trying to turn history in its head, just like Jonathan himself, in total disregard for truth and recorded history!

Their conduct was appalling and shocking to say the least.

For some of us, there can be nothing more scandalous than this for we know and will not, in the blink of an eye, forget how oppressive and repressive that regime was. The only credit those of us old and shrewd enough to recollect the past can give to Jonathan as regards respect for democratic freedoms and principles is his concession of defeat in a contest in which he was beaten roundly and squarely.

Let no one be deceived, his acceptance of defeat was as much a favour to Nigeria as it was to himself. He sure knew what might have been had he done otherwise.

Now, let us take a trip down memory lane and peel some skin off "FREEROM ICON" Jonathan, and see just how deserving of the title and accolades he truly is:

Come with me:

1. Governors Forum Crises (2013): A lot of political pundits insist this marked the beginning of Jonathan downfall, forget his crass incompetence.

In a simple election involving 35 participants and two contestants, Jonathan's interference saw to it that this more or less political pressure group was fractured beyond redemption resulting in the formation of the PDP Governors Forum chaired by his stooge Godswill Akpabio and another faction of the forum chaired by his preferred candidate who lost in the contest, Jonah Jang.

The election whose video went rival at that time due to its outcome saw Amaechi pulling 19 votes while Jonah Jang pulled 16. Democrat Jonathan insisted Jang won the election and recognised him as the Chairman of the forum giving rise to the much publicised PDP arithmetics where 16 is greater than 19.

This set the precedence for the scenarios that played out in Rivers and Ekiti Houses of Assembly while our "Hero" stood idly by, giving a tacit nod to the obvious anomalies as state police were used to suppress the opposition.

www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-endorses-gov-jangs-faction/

2. APC National Leader Harassed by the Military: During the heat of the campaigns, keeping faith with their doctrine of hounding and intimidating opposition figures, Bola Tinubu had his house placed under surveillance by the military when he wasn't indicted for any federal offence. The national leader responded to this in a manner that set social media on fire, placing a banner in front of his house that seemingly pointed the military where they should be looking- Sambisa.

leadership.ng/news/411334/military-places-tinubu-surveillance

3. Journalists Harassed and Newspapers Confiscated: This was one of the greatest assaults on freedom of speech we witnessed under Jonathan. It was a crackdown reminiscent of the dark days of the Khaki Boys.

Hundreds of papers with publications critical of the government's handling of national issues were confiscated and destroyed. Same guys who supported the actions of the government then screamed blue murder when reports circulated the press that Buhari had barred AIT from covering his activities.

4. APC Office Raided: This was another very dark
day in our democratic experience and marked an upsurge in the use of state security agents to harass and gag the opposition. Under the guise of carrying out an investigation, offices of the opposition were raided with computers and other instruments confiscated and destroyed. It was one of the lowest points of the DSS and somewhat signalled its complete evolution into an arm of the PDP.

The DSS at a press conference displayed items "discovered" at the office during the raid and they were computers, hard drives and other electronic accessories- hell it was a data centre!! Were they expecting to find chopsticks and stoveshuh

5. Buhari's Plane Barred from Landing: Another shameful incident where a plane conveying opposition bigwigs (then), including her flag bearer, on a campaign trail was refused landing rights in Makurdi and they had to return to Abuja. My question is, what if there wasn't sufficient fuel to take them back to Abuja as they made the u-turn mid-air?? Your guess is as good as mine.

saharareporters.com/2014/11/26/buharis-jet-barred-landing-makurdi

6. Protesters and Senator Shot in Rivers: Another gut wrenching incident that demonstrated the partisan nature of our security apparatus under ex president Jonathan. In a continuation of the government's crackdown on the opposition, citizens who were on a peaceful protest in Rivers state were shot at with live and rubber bullets and a Senator was hit twice in the chest. Thankfully, he
survived and a serious crises was averted.

www.vanguardngr.com/2014/01/rivers-crisis-senator-abe-shot-flown-london/

7. APC Women Protesters Teargassed: This was another horrid incident that demonstrated the ex president's disdain for opposition and civil liberties.

www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/police-fire-tear-gas-at-apc-women-protesters-in-rivers/

8. Jonathan Orders Withdrawal of Speaker's Security Detail: Arguably the most vicious assault on our democracy by the ex president. This much publicised incident that needs no introduction earned the ex president (and deservedly so) local and international disrepute and condemnation. People had started to see him as the worst civilian dictator in the country's history. If you ask me, this incident drove the last nail into the coffin of Jonathan's 2015 ambition.

9. Soldiers shoot to disperse protesters in Ojota, Lagos as secret police raids CNN's office: Here's another account of Jonathan's "tollerance" for freedom and human rights. We can all remember that administration's response to Occupy Nigeria protests except of course we want to be deliberately forgetful.

These are but a few events the Mr Freedom subjected Nigerians to. Indeed it would be a herculean task convincing people of sound minds as to the propriety of referring to Mr Jonathan as a protector and promoter of freedoms in this country.

Abusive words are Criminal.

There are three offences that someone who uses "threatening, abusive or insulting" language in a public place may been deemed to have committed.
Using insulting/abusive words against a person isn't a crime, not to my knowledge; it may be morally wrong and inappropriate, but being a crime?.. Naaa.... Using threatening words however is a crime/offence.

To you hate speech is only there's threat of life. okay classify this statement "I hate you"
Mcowubaba:
Baba, let's not mix things up,
Firstly we are talking about hate speeches in reference to Nigerian constitution

Secondly, we are talking about hateful words, not threats, or violent declarations

Your 2nd example is a threat nd not just a hate speech

There is a difference between a hate speech and a threat
Threat is criminal, while hate speech is NOT always criminal INDICATING.

I can say "I strongly hate all indigènes of Edo state, the are useless people who don't deserve anything good in life"
This is a Hate speech in all standards, though some Edo people may not regard it as such, this is what I explained to Mynd44, in reference to subjective and objectiveness of statements.
The above statement is Not criminally indicting according to Nigeria constitution..

Now if I say "I will kill all indigènes of Edo state, once I get the opportunity"

Oga this is a threat not just a hate speech, and I should be arrested and questioned immediately by Security agencies.
According to Nigeria constitution..

Even though, some indigènes of Edo state may still regard this statement as a joke or just a troll.

All I'm saying is that there is no difference between abusive/insultive words and hate speeches

But there is a difference between a hate speech and a Threat
And most especially, human beings react differently to statements, as I have earlier explained.

Once you add an atom of violent/brutal words in your statements, it's no more just a hate speech or abusive statement, it's now a THREAT, know the difference.

Timaya is a bastard and I hate him so much, is different from I will go to Bayelsa and burn Timaya's house grin, because I hate him so much....
And as I said about statement generally being objective and subjective, Timaya himself may regard this 2 statements as a JOKE!!
I totally agree with you @Mcowubaba, I wasn't really clear with my earlier example. In my opinion, hate speeches could simply just be when a person openly expresses evil desires, or openly wishes evil on others. According to the social definition, hate speech mainly refers to openly wishing a group of people evil, or attacking them verbally based on their ethnicity, nationality, religion, race etc. E.g. "I hate Edo people, they dont deserve anything good in life."

Truth of the matter is that hate speeches are a part of our everyday lives and to a large extent, we are all guilty of some sort of hate speech, but at a harmless level. There are however some kind of hate speeches that are not just right because they could have far reaching effects on the psyche of people and could lead to violence. Example is the type we've seen lately in Nigeria - Arewa youths & Ipob.

Mcowubaba:
Oga there is no difference in those statements undecided

What benchmark did you use to classify statements that are hate speeches and statements that are insults

You can't just choose the one that pleases you, hate is subjective NOT objective.
What maybe a hate speech to you, maybe regarded as a joke to other person undecided
And to the best of my knowledge, Nigeria constitution has not actually specified what statements are hate speeches.

Someone can call me "a big fool, and that tell me I'm worthless in life" , this will not move me, but I bet you, there are some people I will tell this exact words, and the will break down emotionally and regard this statement as being hateful
..
Bro, there is a clear difference between using abusive words and making hate speeches. To start with, abusive words aren't criminalised anywhere in the world, but hate speeches are.

1. Mr A is a kunu sipping idiotic dullardic bastard
2. Mr A is just a stinking pig, if he crosses my domain, I will strangle him to death.

Number 1 above is just an abusive statement. Yes it will hurt, but no law (except maybe religious doctrines) will punish or caution you for that. But when you cross into Number 2, you have simply crossed the line of the law.

My brother, until recently PDP has not being itself as a party and therefore has been largely silent, but that's inconsequential, the job of opposition is to criticize and blame, it's left for the people to decide if the government is working or not....propaganda, mostly divisive and evil ones was the major tool that got this present govt into power.

Blame games was the hallmark of this administration from the word go, I was once like you, carrying the "PDP looted all the money" card up and down, until recently, I reckoned, what about policies? enabling environment and equity for all the ethnic constituents of this country, things that don't directly require money....how has this administration faired in those areas? Is federal appointments given with money? or is secret recruitment as a result of PDP's looting also? Is PDP also responsible fro the president refusing to resign, despite not being able to serve? is PDP responsible for making this country an object of ridicule, do you mean to tell me that the resume or resign protest which Charlyboy nearly died for is because he's bitter from election loss? Stop trying to be intellectual and politically correct, the people you're here defending think rashly and their actions are direct! Unless you're benefiting in some way and you don't want your pipe running dry!
You mentioned policies - it is one thing to formulate policies in principle and it is another thing to implement/enforce them. Lack of policy has never been Nigeria's problem, enforcement has always been. Several policies have also been formulated by the current administration in line with their own vision, Buhari even signed some today.

Like I said before, this is the first time an opposition is taking over power, this is the first time there is a transition from one political party to another, so blame games are INEVITABLE. And then again, can you prove me wrong when I say every single episode of blame throwing was started by the PDP?... Every single episode of blame games has always been in RESPONSE to some provocative, hypocritical statement by PDP and their goons; a kettle can't be calling a pot black and you expect the pot to keep silent.

You mentioned something about secret recruitment; are you trying to use that topic as a basis to compare both parties/administrations?... Because if you are, then it's pointless. Secret recruitment has been the hallmark of Nigeria since inception; we should even be glad that 'some of' it now gets busted because Nigerians are now more vigilant and thanks to the proliferation of social media through which the info is passed instantly.

President being unable to resign: While I'm also in support of the president handing over power, please let's not delude ourselves that that is an APC vs PDP issue, it's a largely African problem. Were you really expecting an African president to resign?... Or are you suggesting if it were a PDP president, he would have resigned?... Just few years ago, a PDP president was in coma for almost 5 months, he didnt even do the most basic constitutional requirement of handing over power to his vice but his PDP goons covered it up and argued night and day insulting Nigerians how there was nothing wrong in having even a dead president. APC's case is surely a subtle one compared to 2010, even Buhari is working today and signing new policies but you think APC is useless because Buhari has refused to resign?... Please spare me that pointless comparison.

Thank you very much for pointing out the ResumeOrResign protest led by Charly Boy; that is a perfect example of "criticising government for the love of country." Tuface's own protest too (which he backed out of) was another perfect example of "criticising government for the love of country." Any discerning mind can see the clear difference between such patriotic protests and the daily unabating protests (more like wailings) of disgruntled Jonathanians.

And finally, I'm not trying to defend anybody, I only just attacking hypocritical criticism coming from people whose driving force was their the loss of their candidate, you will NEVER see me opposing genuine pure minded critics. You will also not see me coming to preach to you how APC is bread and how Buhari is butter; ALL my posts on this forum are always in response to ideologies which try to preach how the last prodigal administration was the best thing after sliced bread.

Funny response, when it's clear that even the ruling party has not even left the election period, the past two years has been about, vendetta, blame games and name-calling! But what do I know, trying to be politically correct while your future is being stolen out from under you!
There's a clear difference between "criticising govt for the love of country" vs. "just being perpetually bitter simply because politics did not go the way you wanted." One can spot the difference between a genuine govt critic and just a pained wailer from miles away...

By the way, the blame games you have seen in the past 2 years is almost always in response to abuses and hypocritical criticism from the other political camp. A man swallows the money in a family account and then has the effrontery to come criticise his brother for being unable to put food on the table during a famine; you leave that man no choice than to remind the world how the accusing brother was also responsible for the problem. The blame games are inevitable, as long as PDP and its supporters would not shut their traps. Besides again, this is the first time an opposition is taking leadership, so there's bound to be blames flying around.

You dont expect me to chase you about like a headless chicken to counter every nonsense you spew about Nigeria (even on twitter)... 2 years on and you still dwell in your grief of 2015... any reasonable folk should have recovered a long time ago...

[s]Let your 97% go and counter them.
It should be easy[/s].
And you think everyone is so jobless to run about wailing to every foreigner who has an ear over buhari matter?... Such squeals are usually expected from the losers; reason why you see the bitter losers all over social media, street protests and rallies, sweating it out as if we're still in election period.

At a point, I use to think Fayose was just a loud mouth politician always seeking attention. But with time I got to see that all his actions always comes out with a reaction.
We have let these old men rule us from time to time still they keep coming back to sit on power again.
Let us give a young fearless, bold and determined man the chance to rule, lets us see how he can move Nigeria forward. The truth is that if we dont choose our next president, those who are hungry for power will still come to rule us.
Also they will say pdp are thieves, this and that. But look at apc still, look at all of them, apc run to pdp today then tomorrow pdp run to apc. Are they not all the same old confused men?

Fayose is a young vibrant Nigerian who is strong and firm enough to at least make some positive changes.

Lets make this happen.

#TeamFayoseaspresident.
#Fayosemovingnigeriaforward
This post is pure evidence that the youths of Nigeria are very confused, immature and certainly not physically and mentally ready to take leadership.

First of all, we're talking of youth leadership and you are suggesting an almost 60 years old man as your model of a 'young' leader. You probably see him as a youth because he's always on camera with shorts and T-shirts cutting kpomo by the roadside... Kindly tell us what pedigree you think Fayose has besides being obsessed with Buhari and calling him names since campaign days till now?...

Oh sorry I forgot! you dislike Buhari so you simply just admire anyone who calls him names; Fayose does that morning, afternoon and night so he must be a good and 'fearless' leader. I guess your next hero must be FFK.
PoliticsRe: Engineer Refutes Hon. Amaechi's Statement On Railway by obailala(m): 8:55am On Aug 24, 2017
tk4rd:
Just the way black men live and work in every other foreign country, that's what you see here..
1. Like I said, any contract you see oyibo man as the manager was keenly contested with Anambra born contractors. For any single photo of oyibo contractor you see, there are more than 25 photos of Anambra born contractors.. Why are you so interested in the few oyibo photos...

2. By the way, the original argument in the main post was that Nigerian Engineers are not competent, and cannot handle Railway Jobs, which I strongly refute.. Anambra Contractors can handle it..
If Amechi was sincere to himself, he wouldn't have made such fallacious mistake of hasty generalization..

If he had no trust in Nigerian Engineers,, he would have just sacked all the Nigerian staff at NRC, and then tell the Nigerian Universities to discontinue the study of Engineering..
I mean, what is the use of training Nigerian Engineers if the FG would not notice the good engineers amongst them at least.??
..
3. The reason things are done wrongly is because, the supervisors from the said ministries allow such substandard works to go approved, just because they collected some kickbacks..
The Oyibo contractors could be admired for this. They don't drop kickbacks for anybody..
They can only show little appreciation, just the little they can,, and do the work the way it is in the design.. They don't do shabby works and cover it up with bribes..
Nevertheless, in Anambra, all these bad-collabo had been corrected.. The proper checks had been put in place to see to the quality of projects.. A lot of independent bodies now check the projects before they are certified and approved, and thus, everybody involved in the works had to sit up and deliver good jobs, if not, it won't be approved if any of the control agencies marked it as substandard..
1. Whenever it has to be a slightly more important or complex project (e.g. a bridge or flyover), I have noticed it is ALWAYS the oyibos that get to do it. You absolutely cannot dispute this fact... Like I said before, it is not that we do not have trained and qualified engineers who can handle this, but for some reason, the contract ALWAYS goes to oyibo project managers. You might have already answered part of the riddle in Point 3 of your response above.

2. Amaechi said "MOST Nigerian engineers", not "ALL Nigerian engineers"; and when it comes to rail technology, there is no falsehood in what he has said.

3. You already pointed out part of the reason why contracts for complex jobs go to foreigners. Second reason might just be linked to the reason why independent Africa has refused to move forward since the whites handed over power to us. The black man has simply refused/failed to take charge of anything; reason why whenever an important job is to be done, we still run back to foreigners to come lead the project. Just recently in Cross Rivers, it took the little effort of some Chinese 'schoolboys' to tell us we had numerous solid minerals languishing in the forest. This is despite the fact that we have professors in geology from those areas.

By the way, I admire how you have relentlessly advertised your state. You must be an employer of the govt, or maybe not.
