SportsRe: NFF Say Kenya Responsible For Their Troubles by ocheejemb: 3:46am On Mar 22, 2013
chukxie: Nigerians are smarter than what the NFF spokesman thinks. He should produce as proof copies of the letters he claimed were sent to the Kenyan football ministry. As a host country it's our responsibility to ensure our guests are treated nicely. Kenyans are our brothers hence they deserved to be treated as one. Does any reasonable thinking Nigerian think this kind of shabby treatment would be meted out to Arab looking Africans? Your answer is as good as mine. An emphatic NO!

TV/MoviesRe: Why Are Nigerian Music Videos Better Than The Home Movies? by ocheejemb: 5:29pm On Mar 11, 2013
Not true that its the same for most countries. The gap in Nigeria is huuuuge, but good movies have started coming out small by small. It is true that the amount of money required to make them is a huge factor. I imagine it costs a couple million naira to shoot and edit and etc etc a good 4 minute music video, so I can imagine how much a 90minute movie will cost
PoliticsRe: APC: Fashola, Oshiomhole, Okorocha Tipped As VP Nominees by ocheejemb: 3:04pm On Mar 10, 2013
Also why do people clamour for a President from thier region, has any regioned gained substansively from the nation being ruled by thier son. Is Bayelsa now London or Carlifronia? Did Katsina and Kano and Borno and Niger or that region in general benefit from the years of Babangida and Abacha and Yaradua? Or did Ogun state benefit from 8 years of Obasanjo?
PoliticsRe: APC: Fashola, Oshiomhole, Okorocha Tipped As VP Nominees by ocheejemb: 2:59pm On Mar 10, 2013
TheBookWorm: Fashola is clearly the best presidential candidate within APC. Having him as a VP is very disrespectful. The man has clearly shown that he can become president of Nigeria. He is governor of one of the most important state within Nigeria for goodness sake.

All this talk of having him as a VP is a non-starter.
Lagos is definitely without doubt the most important state to be honest, every other governor has a less important job, less strenuous and he's doing it better than all of them. To have him as a subordinate to someone who he is better, more experienced than indeed is insulting and will only lead to problems later on.
PoliticsRe: APC: Fashola, Oshiomhole, Okorocha Tipped As VP Nominees by ocheejemb: 2:55pm On Mar 10, 2013
FreeGlobe: Lmao at this clown. And what experience does fashola have to be the vice president of this country. Anyhow you see APC is a failure on arrival. A Muslim/Muslim ticket in this country will only work when all Nigerians gets drunk on election day and The CPC and ACN camps are Muslims. sorry.
I am a Christian and dont care if two Muslims or indeed two idol worshippers rule as long as they are properly qualified for the job. i also dont see why the Presidential Candiate has to be from the North or wherever, the best men for the job should get the ticket regardless of where they are from. When we stop to look at ourselves first as Northerners, Easterners, Westerners, Christians, Muslims, Hausa, Fulani, Igbo, Idoma etc etc etc etc till infinity but as Nigerians first and foremost then we will finally be on our way to where we need to be.

PoliticsRe: Foreign Degree & The Nigerian Mentality by ocheejemb: 1:00am On Mar 05, 2013
mba emeka: I can relate with the OP fulltime. The situation has seriously waned from Jarus time to now. I can say that because I'm from the latter era (most likely where the OP is coming from). To be fair, the MNC's still favour the foreign degrees but like Ajanlekoko and others have said the white collar job openings seem to have wizened over time even abroad.

Nepotism and cronism is still the order of the day (especially in the IOC's). These lot favour folks that have had some experience with them- either as an intern or as a contract staff. I experienced it with Exxon. After passing the Dragnet and skilltest phase(s) we where interviewed. In that time span I had a friend that served with them and was also retained as a contract staff that wrote the same tests. He didn't pass the skilltest (I know this because he confided in me and besides he's an intelligent lad that graduated with a first class degree in engineering from a Nigerian university) but his boss told him to relax that he'd contact the HR to see what he could do. Well, to cut a very long story short he got the job and has been chilling there ever since. The caveat here is that atleast the guy is pretty smart but the reality on ground is that he wouldn't have secured the job bereft of his bosses help. Its even noteworthy to add here that 3 others like himself (that served there too and were retained) got the same job. We just accepted it and moved on.

PS: the likes of SPDC, ADDAX have corroborating stories as such. Maybe in 2004-2008 it wasn't like that. But from 2009-till date. People experienced it. It gets easier after one has garnered some experience though. But its safer to know the Petroleum minister, VP, C-in-C and the likes. Its safest to know God. *wink wink*
I like this example. Your friend
A. graduated with a first class
B. did his IT there
C. had a good relationship with the boss

How much better qualifed for the job can he be, than the guy off the street who knows how to pass psychometric tests, which I hate with a passion because all they prove is that you have practiced them, and have nothing to do with your knowledge or mental capacity
PoliticsRe: Foreign Degree & The Nigerian Mentality by ocheejemb: 12:55am On Mar 05, 2013
Jarus: So many funny comments here.

Personally, I don't think it should be automatic that because you have a foreign degree, you should be automatically preferred to the locall-trained. This is why I like MNCs like Shell. They subject all of you to same selection process and pick who they consider the best (and interestingly, their final picks have always been balanced between local and foreign trained). I don't agree it should be automatic. If you do well in selection process, with your effizzy accent, you stand a very good chance. My guess is that you expected your search to be a walk in the park, for the simple reason that you have good foreign degree.

But like Ajanlekoko said, there are dwindling white collar jobs. If it was 2004-2008, I can bet you would have gotten many offers. I was spoilt for choices, got up to 4 offers 2007/2008. But I spent more than 1 year actively nosing before I was able to get a decent move last year. Things have changed. My friends that resigned from banks and went abroad for Msc's struggled to get another job when they came back. Not many jobs, too many qualified people competing for the few spaces.

Personally, I still hold that merit still works in Nigeria, especially in private sector. The connection thing is exaggerated in my opinion. It is not as bad as portrayed. I got my current job thru Guardian advert. My tight friends got jobs in Shell, Chevron, Addax without knowing anybody. These are good guys and merit is working for them.
Thanks for this.

First of all, even though getting a job isnt easy, it isnt only by virtue of connections. Private companies have nothing to gain by employing a mediocre son of a connection who will come and spoil business for them. I have scores of friends who did test, attended interviews and passed and are now working in Banks, Oil Companies, Telcos etc, and based on our 2.1/2.2 for Unilag o. Some people are lucky, some arent so lucky. I have a friend whose mum is a high level manager in a well paying government agency, he was well qualified for the job as well but wasnt even shortlisted for the first round.Honestly, though speaking with a dodgy accent, when the interviewer can see from your CV that you went abroad quite late in life isnt really a good way to endear yourself to them, especially if your CV isnt so spectacular that the company would be foolish not to hire you.

Second of all, this connection thing, forget, its everywhere. This is the entire premise that LinkedIn is based and thriving on. Its the same way everywhere, if you and another potential candidate have the same qualifications and experience then realistically who will get the single position. You the guy off the street or Me the guy whose Dad and the Manager of said company went to Secondary School together?

I think that the truth is that at the end of the day, there arent that many jobs and too many people equally qualified for them. If your foreign degree (which the OP conspicuously did not mention) isnt very directly applicable to the Nigerian Context and Economy, then you might struggle to find a job, even as those with degrees that are actually in demand are also struggling to find jobs.

PoliticsRe: Chime Flown Abroad Again On Medical Grounds by ocheejemb: 11:48am On Mar 04, 2013
fogman,:
Daily Times has just been informed that the Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime has been flown abroad again following complications on his health condition.

Governor Sullivan Chime returned to Nigeria two weeks ago after spending four months in hospital abroad and since he returned, the governor has been incommunicado leaving speculations that his return in the first place was ‘packaged’ to show that he was still in control of affairs of the state.

It is not yet clear the manner in which his movement aboard was arranged and to which hospital. Daily Times will be keep you updated on this.

Culled: Daily Times
http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/breaking-news-enugu-governor-sullivan-chime-flown-abroad-again-medical-grounds
One day the political class will realise its not in thier best interest to be flying abroad every week when they have a headache. Is it not sad that there is no hospital in the country that these people can be confident will give them the same level of healthcare they expect abroad. The truth of the matter is that the Doctors abroad arent much better than the ones at home, its just the facilities and structures in place that make all the difference.
PoliticsRe: Fashola Visits Ladipo Market (Pictures) by ocheejemb: 11:44am On Mar 04, 2013
People clean after themselves in these places. They dont dump garbage into drainage or block everywhere with illegal stalls. Here in the UK you face a hefty fine if your dog poos on the street and you dont clear up of it, and God help you if you are caught dumping garbage somewhere you shouldt. On top of this they also pay hefty sums per month as council tax to cover garbage disposal.

seguno2: While Fashola's attention to the filthy situation is good, the man should show a greater understanding of how government works than he has shown so far in this matter.
Why are taxes, levies, rates paid by the traders to the LGA and Sanitation agencies?
What is the role of the LG authorities in cleaning up the markets and public spaces?
How is it done in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and other places where we like to escape?
Who keeps the open public spaces in VI, Ikoyi clean?
Who will keep the general public spaces, roads, streets in the proposed Eko Atlantic City clean- residents or the local government covering the area?
We need to also educate ourselves on the roles and functions of each level of government to the people to make the PUBLIC SERVANTS live up to their responsibilities.
PoliticsRe: Fashola Visits Ladipo Market (Pictures) by ocheejemb: 11:37am On Mar 04, 2013
I take it you havent heard of LAWMA
PointB: Besides, is there no Environmental Protection/Sanitation Agency in the state (Lagos)? What exactly their job description?

Wouldn't they have been well served doing their own bit to keep the market and other environment clean. Why do Nigerians panders to tribalism in very basic things? Most of the clowns posting here are busy shouting 'Igbo!, Igbo!!' when common sense suggests that sanitation agency failed woefully to do their job. And what is being exposed here is the failure of Fashola Government to do it's duty. A government that pockets tax and shirks on it responsibility, is as bad could be. Why take out you failure on the citizen? Government have an ingenious way of blaming their failures on the citizen. Fashola is one example of this type of government.

In closing Ladipo Market, the government has admitted that the agencies responsible for sanitation is lacking in ideas, and or tools to do what is necessary to do their jobs. Close one thousands market if you like, without putting the necessary tool in place, the dirt will return as soon as the markets are open. Take a look at Oshodi and see what has become of the place. There is something fundamentally wrong in the way LASG government go about closing market and demolishing buildings, paucity of ideas is a common denominator in these plethora of Fashola's misadventure, he is losing it by the day!

This has nothing to do with humility. Lots of people in the West ride bikes; for fitness purposes; for environmental purposes; because they enjoy it.

ProgrammingRe: Developing An Operating System - What Are The Prerequisites by ocheejemb: 12:44am On Feb 25, 2013
Do you even code bro?

BTW, Linux wasnt built from scratch, it was a fork of a Unix clone called Minix, which was created by Andrew Tanenbaum to teach students about OSdev. Linus Torvalds had a LOT of help from the emerging open source community so he didnt do all the work. Even at that Linux has taken several years, forks and distributions to get to where it is today and still its still number 3 at best. OSdev is not a joke, and today, nothing remotely sensible can be achieved by one man, or even a small team.

The best you could do is start an open source project but given your limited knowledge even this would be tough to achieve. I honestly do not think any one person, not Bill Gates, not Linus Torvalds, not Steve Jobs, not Mark Shuttleworth (and no offence not you) can code a modern OS from scratch to perfection. Sure they could lead a project to do so, if they had a few years, a few hundred talented developers and a few hundred million dollars to pay for these.

If you feel you have a revolutionary idea which is so novel that no one has thought of implementing it yet, then first work towards learning how to implement it. Dont learn the differences between C, C++ and C#, learn how to write code in them. The next step would be to learn how to implement this futuristic, unprecedented idea in real life. By this time you would have found that it is indeed not possible to write a modern OS from scratch singlehandedly, but you would have identified the exact problem you want to solve, and you would have some idea on how to reuse the existing knowledge in the field and how to extend it.
