I was a Christian, though I am now atheist. I studied Christianity, including the various divisions and the history of Christianity. I have never come across a Christian group of any size which claims that Mary was a goddess.

I did google it. All I found were Muslim sites that claimed that Jews believe that Ezra is 'the son of God'. I can't find even a single Jewish site which makes this claim.

A simple yes or no will do. This has to do with a debate on another thread.

According to some jewish books he was indeed concidered a son of God, google it please. The bible not only said god has children but goes as far as saying he had first born, so what are u talking about?

The Jews do not, and have not, said that Ezra is the son of God. It is about as ridiculous as somebody claiming that Muslims believe that Muhammad is the son of God. There is NO Jewish text which cites Ezra as "the son of God". None. The Quran is dead wrong on this. Ask Jews themselves what they think if you don't believe me.

Angel196: Mr. this verse wasn't talking about trinity but was a verse asking Jesus weather he asked men to worship him and his mother. U can't deny that some christians worship mary i.e take her as god while others worship jesus(pbuh) i.e take him as god, therefore they become 2 gods apart from Allah. If u don't understand don't make conclusions. This verse doesn't talk about the people involved in trinity so don't confuse urself

No Christian takes Mary as a goddess. Go ask them if you think otherwise. There are plenty on here.

Since u don't believe in qur'an, do tell how the knowledge of one man could be compared to many 'ancient greeks' not forgetting the fact that that one person was an illiterate not a scientist, never went to school nor went for research yet many learned scientists use this same book as reference. How can you explain that?

Apatheist has done a good job exposing the scientific errors in the Quran, so I'll give you a few historical errors:

1) The Quran mistakenly identifies Mary as part of the Christian Trinity: "And when God said, ‘O Jesus son of Mary, didst thou say unto men, 'Take me and my mother as gods, apart from God'?" Quran 5:116

Christians have never taken Mary as a god alongside Jesus and God. This is a misunderstanding of the trinity by Muhammad.

2)The Quran says that the Jews believe that the prophet Ezra was the son of God: "The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah "; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah ." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved [before them]. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded" Quran 9:30

Jews have never believed that any man has been the son of God. Another clear misunderstanding by Muhammad.

3) The Quran says that Pharaoh used baked clay bricks to build tall buildings: "And Pharaoh said to his people: "I have not known a god for you other than myself; so Haman, light me a fire to bake clay so that I could build a rise high enough, maybe I see Moses' god whom I think is a liar." Quran 28:38

No pharaoh used baked clay bricks to build buildings in ancient Egypt; they used cut limestone for most of the structure and then mortar for the casing. In addition the Pharaohs did not believe they were the only god; they believed in many gods, so there is a second error in the same verse.

In addition, virtually no scientist uses the Quran as a reference.

The knowledge of the ancient Greeks was greater than that of the quran. Also the Quran has numerous historical and scientific errors.

I am not afraid of being dead. It will be the same state as it was before I was born. I do, however, have some apprehension about the way in which I will die (painful or terrifying).

I cannot 'choose' to believe. I just don't believe. If I asked you to choose to believe that 2+2=5 could you really do it?

The general ideals of humanism are pretty good. Don't do something to someone that you don't want done to yourself (obviously there are exceptions, like needing to discipline a child for his own good even though he doesn't like it). And empathy is important, as others have said.

However I am not a pacifist and I recognize that sometimes that the use of violence and war is a necessary evil. I am all for the liquidation of Boko Haram by any means.

Poor analogy. We know how a car comes into existence. We don't know how the universe came into existence--maybe it has always existed. Even if there was a creator, we would not know if this creator still exists, cares about the universe, or even knows of the world's existence.

Empiree: I don't agree with this. Maybe partially. I think reverse is the case. I think education means different things to different people. Understanding religion itself is education. I think many tend to think that when they hear the word " education" it automatically gives them sense of "western education". This is wrong. Secular education does not penetrates spiritual insight.
As for saying Islam is not open to education, that's irrelevant. A famous saying is reported on Islam thus:

Actually, there has been evidence of god everywhere. Evidence of different gods and goddess. But I will like to know who you think God is and how that being do not exist.

I have always said that I cannot absolutely disprove that there was a creator. However, my current opinion is that there was not a creator. I don't think god is anything, anymore than Santa Claus. I am an agnostic atheist.

The earth could 'divide' due to natural forces. Thunder claps are also natural.

What would impress me? If god himself came down and was able to stop time itself (except for myself), in other words I could move around while everything else is frozen. That would be impressive. Or if this god came down and, on command, created a genuine snowstorm in Lagos, with several inches of snow over the entire city, while the temperature remains as it normally is. Not hail, but snow. I'd probably be convinced by that.

Let me assure you that I could be convinced that god exists, I just require rational, empirical, scientifically testable evidence. Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and all the others, have exactly zero evidence for any god.

Empiree: Okay now guys. I wont like to derail your thread but let me just input this before I commot. So, atheism simply means disbelieve in existence of God or deity according to mazaje and probably that's official definition of it. Good enough.

Now guys, including urban2 read this. Very soon I will be going for vacation in carrebean Island of Trinidad. I honestly dont mind inviting you guys and i will be responsible for costs. The flight will take us some hours to get there. I will come back to this thread a month before my vacation so that we could get ready. This is going to be private jet okay?.

However, when we board the plane, I have to instruct our pilot to cruise at 35,000 altitude over atlantic ocean. When we get to that altitude, I will instruct him to put the jet to dive (that's, crash it in the ocean). What will be your reaction at that point?. Sincere answer please.

CASE STUDY: I sponsored 2 atheists on the same trip 9 yrs ago. When we reach 30000 above sea level, pilot dived the jet to the ocean. These atheists guys sat not far from me.They notice something's wrong with the aircraft and looked through the window. What they saw was terrible. They started crying and creaming "oh God , Oh God Oh God" then i was wondering why they didnt shout "Oh nothing Oh science, Oh nothing, Oh science" ?. I was suprized. So pilot recorved from dive and everything was fine. Then i was like guys what just happened?. They said we thought something happed to the plane but thank "God" we are saved. I said oh I'd thought you guys dont believe in God?. They smiled.

So my question to you guys is dont you think you are deceving yourselves when you said you dont believe in God?. It doesnt matter what your concept of God is. At least for now God being Supreme Being. In other to proof this theory i just gave you, i will post a video of aircraft scheduled for testing with Atheists on board. Then, aircraft develpoed tech problems unknown to them and dived into the ocean. They screamed Oh God Oh God. I was wondering why they didnt say "Oh nothing", Oh science"

Two times I have been on flights that had to make emergency landings due to problems with the plane (in one case, one of the engines blew out). I did not pray either time; in one of those I was actually reading the God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. I kept reading.

Then why do western organizations continue to vaccinate Africans and provide mosquito nets? The population of Africa has quadrupled in the past 60 or 70 years due to western health care! If the west has been trying to decrease or eliminate the African population then they have done a terrible job of it because the population is exploding thanks to the west. And Ebola is not a good way to reduce the population because it works too slowly and it can be avoided with some precautions because it is not airborne. If Ebola is the west's way of reducing population then they get a failing grade!

Neither heaven nor hell sound very appealing to me. However, hell has the most interesting people. Christian Heaven sounds like a version of North Korea, and Muslim heaven sounds like a porn movie--and sex would get very boring after a while.

Nobody can answer that just yet. Scientists are still working on it. It's a more honest answer than saying that some imaginary god did it, one that we have never seen any proof of.

Corruption, adultery, theft, prostitution, scamming, hypocrisy, lying, witchcraft.....these are also sins according to Christianity (not that I'm Christian myself)

Reiyvinn: Well, I personally don't believe in the existence of gods but I don't do so based the kind of logic you gave above. You're right that he reflects the character of the primitive men that created him but being Cruel doesn't equal being non-existent. I'm sure you understand.

I'm also atheist, however if there was a creator, it certainly wouldn't be Yahweh/Allah. I don't use this to disprove the existence of all gods, just this one.
