CultureRe: How ‘village’ Has Harmed The Igbo People by plaetton: 1:33pm On Jan 09, 2024
sonature1:
During the Yuletide, the hashtag ‘Igbo village mansions’ trended on social media. The hashtag, which started on Tiktok, was a reaction to a denigrating remark someone made about the Igbo people living in huts in rural communities.

Those travelling to Igboland for Christmas and New Year began to post photos and videos of their houses and other buildings in their communities, while urging people from other parts of the country to also show their own indigenous communities. It quickly spread to X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram and Facebook.

To some, it was a show-off; to others, it was some sort of enlightenment for many who had never travelled to Igboland and never knew that such edifices could be built even in the remotest places.

But there was a reason for that confusion. In Nigeria, the only people who call their ancestral communities ‘village’ are the Igbo people. By calling their hometowns and cities ‘villages’ over the years, Igbo people created a picture of a people who live in thatched huts built with mud. Conversely, other parts of Nigeria use terms like ‘town’ and ‘city’ to describe their own ancestral communities.

For example, growing up I had relatives who lived in places like Zonkwa, Funtua, Mubi, Owo, Ikare, Auchi, Gboko, etc. While talking about their place of residence, they would use words like “town” or “city”, but when talking about home, they would use “village.” Friends from other Igbo towns and cities had the same experience. Imagine the absurdity of hearing indigenes of cities like Onitsha, Owerri, Aba, or Enugu, who live outside Igboland, saying: “I am travelling to my village.”

Unconsciously, the Igbo people internalised ‘village’ to mean “ancestral home” as opposed to “place of residence.” Village is interpreted to be where family members live, where childhood friends can be met, where childhood memories exist, and where the traditions of the people hold sway.

But because of the disconnect between this meaning of ‘village’ and the dictionary meaning, many non-Igbo mistake that expression for something else.

How does the dictionary define ‘village’? Dictionary.com defines a village as “a small community or group of houses in a rural area, larger than a hamlet and usually smaller than a town, and sometimes (as in parts of the U.S.) incorporated as a municipality.”

Using a hut for illustration, National Geographic explains ‘village’ to children between Grade 5 and Grade 8 or Primary 5 and JS2 this way: “A village is a small settlement usually found in a rural setting. It is generally larger than a ‘hamlet’ but smaller than a ‘town.’ Some geographers specifically define a village as having between 500 and 2,500 inhabitants.”

Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner’s Dictionary says that “a village consists of a group of houses, together with other buildings such as a church or school, in a country area.” Note that “country area” means rural area. Similarly, the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English defines it as “a very small town in the countryside.”

Two features run through all the definitions. The first is that a village is “small.” The second is that it is in a rural area. Being rural connotes lacking in modernity and facilities as a result of being far from the city where urbanity exists.

The large number of Igbo people outside Igboland also helped to accentuate the belief that they are running away from their rural communities which lack modern infrastructure to places where life is better. In every state of Nigeria, after the indigenous or ethnic population, the Igbo people are usually the second largest population. Outside Nigeria, the Igbo people also have large populations in many countries of the world. This has led to the creation of a saying that is used as a joke in Nigeria: “If you get to any part of the world and don’t find Igbo people there, please run away from that place.”

Some non-Igbo who had travelled to Igboland had asked me two interesting questions: Why do you people call your towns and cities ‘village’? Why do your people love to leave your beautiful and big towns and cities to relocate to other places, including places not as developed as yours? Such people say that even in remote communities in their home state, there are Igbo people.

But I always smile and say that such is the nature of the Igbo. They simply love to fan out: that even within Igboland, many Nnewi people leave Nnewi to settle in Owerri, while many Owerri people leave it to settle in Nnewi. Some people even relocate to smaller or less developed communities. Some even relocate to worn-torn countries. There is a belief among Igbo people that there is a need that can be filled in every community, no matter how big or sThere is a belief among Igbo people that there is a need that can be filled in every community, no matter how big or small.mall.

Without these factors, especially the use of ‘village’ by Igbo people to describe their hometowns and ancestral homes, there would have been no need to start a campaign of showcasing their homes to other Nigerians. But despite that display, it will still take a long time to erase that image of ‘village’ from the minds of most Nigerians. The first reason is that not everybody is on social media. The second is that not everybody who is on social media saw those displays. The third reason is that mental pictures and narratives are not easily wiped off or replaced.

Because of this wrong nomenclature, many years ago I made a decision never to say “my village,” given the massive developments that have taken place in Nnewi in the past 40 years. I began to use the terms “my hometown” or “my home city.” Initially, it was not easy to say. But eventually, it stuck. Today, I don’t have any problem using the term “hometown” or “home city.”

Some people have argued that the use of ‘village’ gives the nostalgic feeling of leaving the noise and aloof lifestyle of the city for the idyllic and convivial ambience of ‘home.’ They argue that using the term ‘hometown’ does not create that mental distinction. However, there is a price for every action. If you call your hometown ‘village’ while other ethnic groups call theirs hometown or city, naturally yours will be viewed as rural, backward, and poor. You will have the taxing duty of occasionally proving that it is not so. And like Nigerians say in pidgin English: You go explain tire; no evidence! (You will explain and explain, but all will be in vain.)

Rubbish.
There is nothing denigrating about the word ' village ' to describe one's ancestral home.
We are very very proud of the fact that our ancestral villages are the places we call our true homes .

Stop deceiving gullible minions. I am very happy with the strengthening of the naira if only it will bring down the prices of goods. Why are u comparing black market rate to IE window rate. U quoted the highest black market rate ever of N1300 with the current IE window rate just to score cheap political point. The current black market rate is 985 on binance as I type. Propaganda won't help.
Funny.
The so-called IE window rate is the big fraud perpetuated daily to deceive the ignorant.
The posted intra-day lows of $1240 reflect the real trading rate of the Naira on a daily basis.
Let me demonstrate how their manipute the rate to deceive the gullible.

On any given daily session organized by the CBN, the real demand and supply prices is usually in N1200 + range. But shortly the close of the session, the CBN and its agents put in a low bid of around N800(maybe in a tranche of $500 - $1000) to close the session. That bid is immediately filled the CBN and or its agents. That last very small trade of $500 at N800 therefore becomes the last trade for that session, and that price of N800 becomes the closing and quoted price for that day. Then their agents in the media immediately announce to the what they assume to be the blind people of the world that the almighty naira has strengthened against the dollar. They play this ping pong game everyday.
If the CBN were to open their daily trading books to the public ( which they are supposed to do), we see that 98% of daily dollar sales at IE auctions are sold at very lowest ranges of the Naira and the less than 1% of the trades are done highest ranges of the naira, which, coincidentally, are always the very last trades and closing price for each session.

This is fraud in broad daylight . My question is :
Whom exactly are they deceiving, and why ?
For how long can they keep up this daily racket ?

Any real economist , including the many at CBN, know and accept that the Naira free fall is inevitable.

However, I'm inclined to look at it from another angle, that maybe this shaninigan the CBN does everyday is just a way to handhold and guide the Naira gradually down to its true equilibrium without the public outcry and political pitfall.

You are very thoughtless and ignorant.

We are here showing you that what you know as AFRICA is far more than you think it is.

The entire so-called middle East and Israel are historically AFRICAN SOIL.

Every bit as much as Nigeria is AFRICAN SOIL.

Your ancestors lived there for thousands of years in Egypt and the rest of the 'middle east' before they were driven into inner Africa by foreign invaders.

Today you see those lands as ''foreign'' because they've been taken over by invaders.

And because your brain refuses to work, you thInk we are ''claiming other peoples' land'', when in fact all we are doing is educating your dumbass that those are YOUR LANDS HISTORICALLY, AND WERE OCCUPIED BY YOUR PEOPLE, and we are showing you EVIDENCE of that, which is irrefutable.

Learn to look outside the little box they've placed you in today.

You don't know everything there is to know about this world, so be receptive to new knowledge and quit being a conditioned, programmed robot.

In 70 AD the Romans invaded Israel causing millions of Israelites to escape into inner Africa. In his book, ''The Great Roman-Jewish War p66–70'', the Roman historian, Flavius Josephus, stated over thousands of years ago, that the Israelites migrated into inner Africa. He writes:

“General Vaspasian and his son Caesar Titus fought against the Jews. Millions of Jews fled into Africa, among other places, fleeing from Roman persecution and starvation during the siege.”

The history is recorded and available for those who want to know.
So much hogwash nonsense.
This level of self-deprecation is nauseating.
So your ancestors came into being when Vasspesian and his Son Titus expelled Jews from the middle east down to the African Tropical Rain Forrest less than 2000yrs ago ?

Why can't Africans be just Africans?
Why do we need to be Israelites.

Even going by the nebulous biblical chronology, the word Israel and the people supposedly associated with it goes back just 3500yrs ago, whereas Negroid African race, native to Africa, the birthplace and cradle of humanity, are 500,000 yrs to 1.5 million yrs old. This according to modern empirical research.

Why are Africans so mentally fxxed up that they need to attach the provenance of another race to their ancestral history?

For blokes you who insist on perpetuating this low- self worth nonsense, need I remind you that if you are a jew by whatever nonsense you conjur in your vacuous mind, then by the same token , you are also an Arab.
You see, Jews and Arabs are the same Semitic race. Their DNAs are similar, up to a certain point in chronological history. With modern DNA technology, we can see in what era, few thousand years ago, that they diverged. Besides, Jews and Arabs still share similarities in language and culture.

Therefore, Mr Igbo Jew, can you Aldo accept that you are also Arab or related to the Arab race ?

There is nothing in Igbo DNA that suggests that mixed with another distinct race several hundred years ago, talkless of several thousand years ago.

African Negroid race are the first and Original template for the entire human race.
All other races mutated from the African Negroids after the migration out of Africa about 500,000 yrs ago.

The lot of you should be thoroughly ashamed for call yourselves descendants of Jews, a semitic race that is barely 3500 years old, while your own West African Negroid race is 500,000 years old.

Please this thread if for my fellow Igbos.

I copied and pasted the snippet below from one of the justification points of the Jewish Rabbinical Court that ruled that Igbos are Israelites.

I also googled and found out that people having the same or related y-chromosomes means that they are descended from the same male ancestor. In the Igbo case, this male ancestor must be Jacob (whose name was also Israel).
Anyone that understands DNA may want to shed more light on this matter.

The ruling also insinuates that Umu Nri are descendants of Levi, thus their traditional role of providing levitical services to the Igbo race and beyond.

Genetic studies of the y-chromosome of Igbo men demonstrate that they originated in the Levant basin, sharing genetic links with Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews alike. While there is yet an exhaustive academic genetic study of the Igbos, the data of the majority of those who have reported their autosomal and y-chromosome DNA, supports that their ancestors migrated from the Levant Basin into East Africa, and then settled in West Africa.

Moreover, Igbos are organized according to clans. The elders transmit genealogies orally, back to our patriarch Jacob. Indeed, many Igbos descend from Kohanim and Levites. These facts attest to the ancient Israelite origin of the Igbos.

RomanceRe: Why I May Not Marry A Nigerian Man (opinion) by plaetton: 11:48am On Nov 11, 2023
Persephone1:
[i]"Marry a typical Nigerian Man at your own peril"

When I type these words, it's not from a place of hate towards men ( I don't hate anybody) It is from careful analysis of marriages to Nigerian Men which mostly lack genuine love, empathy and kindness. Nigerian Marriages are mostly driven by "needs" and "means" to an end. Too systematic and unnatural and the one with the highest bargaining chip gets the most benefit.

Our mothers didn't teach us enough about Men. They didn't know either until they got married, unfortunately they are still learning about Men too. That is why the popular saying "Ile oko ile eko ni" (Your husband house is a school) is usually the soothing balm to unfavourable experiences a wife has with her husband. One question I always ask myself when I hear these words as parting words of advice for young wife is. Does that mean she is getting married into a strange, unknown and possibly unfavourable world? Why represent her husband as an unending course? And will she ever graduate and be relieved of painful lessons?. Ask these women these questions and they will shake their heads in mockery but the truth is, They weren't taught enough about the Men they are getting married to. How would they when they didn't know who they are either. To understand another person there must be a certain level of self awareness you have reached yourself. This way you have enough level of intelligence to be a perfect judge of character. But when a woman believe all she needs to be is a good cook and good konji reliever then all she will seek is a man who has Kitchen and bed.

Men are the worst in this joke of an institution. Configured to believe all they need to posses is Financial ability to provide. The upbringing of the typical Nigerian Man is very very wrong. Trained with little to no empathy, kindness, self care, sense of belonging, self love but burdened with sense of responsibility brought up like a robot to "provide" only. Most Nigerian men are robotic minded, unable to connect emotionally without aide yet this men are expected to naturally see their brides as a part of themselves. Wishful thinking if you ask me. And when some men luckily achieve this, the society (Men and Women) mock him. Aside this, they don't readily know what they want and are easily tossed by the society.

We create a society devoid of emotional engagement but want the benefits emotions birth. Compassion and affections brings liberty, a man who lacks these will see his wife as his slave and property, he gets to do with her what he seem best and not what is good for her. We really have a long way to go as a Society.

Nigerian Men make terrible horsebands
Everything you wrote up there is true.
However, 100% of it can also be said of Nigerian women.
And to prove that Nigerian women are worse than Nigerian men , we see that outside Nigeria, Nigerian men are highly sought after by foreign women because they say Nigerian men are emotionally engaging and resourceful( the exact opposite of what you allege), whereas, outside Nigerian, Nigerian women are hardly desired or sought after by non- Nigerian men.

From my experience and what I have seen, I think Nigerian women are more transactional when it comes to relationships and marriage than the Nigerian men.
Nigerian women come into relationships and marriage as a means to one end or another, without sowing the vital and necessary emotionally seeds, and then they complain and become resentful when the emotional fruits do not materialize.

Nature endowed women with all the tools to emotionally capture a man.
If a woman does not first CAPTURE a man emotionally in a relationship, then that relationship is like a house built on sand.

" Seek Ye First the kingdom of God, and all other benefits will be added unto ye ".
This is my favorite quote to my prospective lovers.

Reno is one of the most brilliant people we have in Africa!
Lol.

What a very very low standard you have for Africa.

Is it no wonder that Nigeria, the big boy of Africa, is such a basket case.

Foreign AffairsRe: Countries That Gained Independence In October Just Like Nigeria by plaetton: 11:02pm On Oct 01, 2023
DrGoodman:
The issues that sank Nigeria are Tribalism triggered by unhealthy competition initiated by people who couldn't stomach the rise of a particular part of Nigeria to greatness.

So they lied, cheated, fought, killed, and destroyed the whole process in the country that can bring a level playing field for all the country, because they know that tribe will race ahead again.

The fight against that tribe meant that they had to cut corners with the truth, cutting their chances down just to make sure nobody rises, if it means the successful region will rise faster. So standards were lowered, educationally, financially and socially, it became okay to lie about things on national TV, as long as you will be seen to be against that tribe, you will be forgiven.

Institutions had to be killed, processes had to be destroyed, procedures had to be abolished for the tribal Lords to unfairly climb up to twist the truth. Of course the end result became the elevation of haters, criminals and illiterates who cares less about the general wellbeing of the country. As the criminals took over, and are still in power, expect no meaningful developments, because

YOU CANNOT PLANT CORN, AND HARVEST COCONUTS cheesy grin
100% correct.
Unfortunately, suffering and hopelessness knows no ethnicity.

Hateful soul....enemy of Nigeria.....
We really dodged a bullet on February 25th....
Name what other nation in the world that produces cheap crude oil , but imports petrol ?
What other oil producing nation that whose fortunes go down when the price of oil , their principal commodity, goes up in price ?

What other nation spends close $30b on a steel plant , and in 40yrs, no single steel rod has been produced?

What other nation has its entire economy RUN on imported generators that RUN on subsided imported fuel ?
What other nation has swaths of local government areas permanently under the control of terrorists and bandits?
Gosh, I can go on and on .

Nigeria is failed state.

I'm not sure how old you are, little person, but if think that Nigeria has delivered even 10% of the promise of nationhood it had in 1960, then I sincerely hope you do live in Nigeria, proud of the flag.
Nigeria is not a nation, and unfortunately, never have been since perhaps only on the October 1st 1960.
And unfortunately, tribalism and blind bigotry is the main reason it will probably never be a nation.

Nonsense from a shameless, jobless , desperate political jobber.

Laughing out .
If these are the things to proud of in Nigeria, then it's easy to see what high and low level political contractors have done to this once promising country.

For every one of those supposed things to be proud of, there are 1000 for each to weep about.

October 1st should be a day of mourning for every Nigerian.

Fools like Reno Omokri blow hot and cold depending on where the next meal is Coming from.
I'm not sure who gives this fool audience and gives him front page.

October 1st should be a national day of mourning for the death of the dream of nationhood
