Not what she voted for. But that is Nigeria, one big let down. Very satirical. |
BigDawsNet:After 8 years of denied promises you still consider hope a strategy for good governance.... sorry oh. Meanwhile serious folks like civil servants and political office holders have shared all the revenue of government and then borrowed for their contractor friends and family.... Your use to them as a citizen is only to cheer, vote and fight tooth and nail for them. |
That is the summary of Nigeria and as I explained on the Arik topic this is the synopsis of our travels (no pun intended) since independence. That is the systematic wiping out of the middle class that has left Nigeria a feudal state for all intents and purposes. A country of stark have's and have-nots. A country that cannot care for the bottom line, the dregs of society as much as they spend everything they have on the privileged. A country where government spends all its resources on civil servants and political office holders exclusively. In Ebonyi's case the airport will end up being used by civil servants and politicians by and large. Unfortunately they do not constitute the majority so commercial success will not happen. And that is why airlines in Nigeria like Arik will continue to live on borrowed time. Which is next for the gallows... AirPeace? Restructure Nigeria?.... they will not agree. |
PROUDIGBO:There is no middle class in Nigeria to sustain the airline industry. This is the basic fact we are fail to come to terms with. No amount of bailout will keep afloat any enterprise with an unworkable model. All airlines you see today are living on borrowed time. That is why once they are established they quickly seek to fly international to tap into foreign markets because we just don't have one of our own. But I guess this is not the concern of government or the interest of the people. We are all to relaxed in accepting that the ruling class has systematically wiped out the middle class in Nigeria since independence so that their feudal model of existence is sustained. Have you ever asked why there are more private jets in Nigeria than the entire fleet of commercial airlines? Pass through any major airport and see for yourself. For a population of 200 million how many flight take off and land in Nigeria in a day.... just shocking. |
Exactly what I have been saying for more than two decades now. Nigeria has no foundation for a sustainable air transport business. Next in the conveyor belt of skeletons will be Air Peace. These airlines are trading and leveraging far above the realities of the Nigerian economy. Transport of any kind is a mass market derivative. and in the air transport niche where margins are wafer thin the industry requires a thriving economy to be sustainable. Unfortunately Nigeria does not have one and never has had one since independence so anyone investing is just living on borrowed time no matter what political patronage they presently enjoy and no matter how bottomless the apparent resources of the sponsors. The fact that the present one on the throne is falling over itself to impress government shows it really does not have a solid, self sustaining model. |
SmartyPants:Their governors have no impetus to change anything significantly. There is no pressure on them to do so. Good governance anywhere in the world is not given, it is demanded and in some cases fought for. Look at the political demographic across Nigeria. The most developed states contain the most dynamic people of influence irrespective of resources. |
Man is all about his environment. The environment makes him and he makes his environment. The simple reason why the east is not as developed as it should be is that the men and women of influence are largely not domiciled or resident there. Change that factor and the place will be what it should be. People of influence are the pathways the ordinary citizens reached government for performance. If these people demand for specific services to be made available it is bound to be done. But it appears these states are left to the whims of politicians who see those on ground as lacking the capacity to challenge them in such a consolidated manner that changes anything. |
Bede2u:And I will ask you this question. If a man goes to a foreign land, settles there for business, is he not likely to raise a family there no matter what language he speaks. What citizenship will his children be called if they live there all their lives, adopt language, culture, everything except perhaps a change of name. Now if they have payed taxes and voted many times over, all their lives, where is the line between all these and a quest to be voted for. Nigeria is about to enter a phase we have not anticipated and in certain quarters resisted, the indigene question viz state of origin. And this question will continue to bite and being much tensions I n our so called mega cities for years to come until Nigeria is restructured. Because with a population of 20 million, no one can prove that everyone single one is of a particular tribe, no one can prove the economic strength comes from a particular demographic so the question remains where does politics and demographics meet and.mix. |
LKTJ123:Read through the man's post and thought over it for a minute. A very extreme, awful position but in the conflagration there are some diamonds of truth. If the present geo-political tensions have a long lasting solution perhaps one lies in the truth that easterners in particular should solve the chicken and egg question as to how to get their homeland looking like Lagos. As I said weeks ago in the midst of the tensions over the elections, no Nigerian city qualifies to be one in my opinion. Most are just glorified villages when it comes to geo-politics, race relations and issues of traditions and culture. Lagos may as well never become a Berlin, a London, a New york, a Los Angeles or even a Dubai (well underway), cities where so called foreigners have shaped in all aspects of life and living from tip to toe including politics and leadership, true melting pots of culture and traditions. And if a cultures and influences cannot mix without strife and violence in Nigeria as we see in much of the north then we as well seek to forge ahead as independent people states. Perhaps it is time for easterners to start seriously considering building their homesteads if they ultimately seek control over everything. My two cents. |
Nigeria. A Contractor's Paradise. The present government had seen that all the 'juice' had been squeezed out of the orange and promptly discarded it. That is how Abuja rocks. New government, new white elephant farms and game reserves. But what I see and in that picture is an eyesore and nothing like a 9 billion naira structure, and I mean the 2012 version of the naira. |
ArcSEMPECJ:In a nutshell, there are no checks and balances.... just like Nigeria's democracy where the President selects the chief Justice and the Senate president.... it always ends badly. |
What is the nonsense about concealing his name and that of his hotel instead of full disclosure so that the hotel can be evacuated immediately and shut down pending full investigation, to save lives. This is a state of emergency and the powers of the state should supercede any privacy laws.... ![]() |
And this is the man the ruling party wants to foist as the number 3 citizen of this country with enormous responsibilities at a time when impressions of the fidelity of government to the country and the citizens is at an all time low, when the trust deficit is canyon wide. I know the Executive will prefer an individual with so much baggage, so many skeletons so they can blackmail him at will to do their bidding, keep him dangling on a puppet string, roasting over the coals of law enforcement which they control knowing he does not enjoy immunity by the Constitution. Nigerians should rise against attempt to shield this man. Let him face the law and clear his name first before any hint of consideration whatsoever. We cannot continue to be governed by the worst of the worst every time and suffering the inevitable consequences of admitting people of questionable character. |
litaninja:Be careful how you laugh. Was reading with alarm yesterday that Mercedes Benz announced that the 2023 E-class will be the last pure combustion engined automobile in that fleet it will make. The era of ICE's has ended and Nigeria like most of the third world has not started the transition. We are not even talking about it as a country thoughtless of planning on the transition. My guess is that the tsunami from the fossil fuel earthquake happening in the rest of the developed world will probably hit us in a few years when the cost of old stock pure combustion engined cars begins to rise astronomically. And then what happens to a country without the infrastructure to transit to electric vehicles, a country that cannot manufacture combustion engines anyway.... There is a big, big problem coming. |
From some comments above it appears some folks are confusing issues of sexuality and sex. Not exactly the same thing. |
Bacteria8:Team sports can actually all be combined like in tennis where you have the mixed doubles. Imagine a mixed soccer team of half a dozen male and female players, England will have probably won the world cup by now..... ![]() .....while African teams sadly will fall flat due to 'technical issues' of onfield chauvinism. |
There's nothing a World Bank loan cannot solve, a Federal Executive Council meeting cannot handle and greedy government contractors will not pass. |
As May 29 approaches this is one in a string of admissions of failure. The final nail in the legacy of this hapless administration. There is no need for further proof. Mr Buhari's government has accepted it's fate. |
No problem. Even the one that has just been elected President has not promised anything concrete. And none of his fanatical supporters can put their hand on any tangible expectation, just the usual lesson in history.... and the smoke and mirrors of, 'we hope he will perform...' Nigeria's form of democracy is the most unserious, futile and illogical one on earth. One in which the citizens give pass marks for examinations not written and jobs to folks not interviewed. How can a whole President at the end of two tenures say he did not promise anything..... how was he elected.... gosh. Anyway as they say blessed are those that expect nothing, for.... |
Peer to peer review amongst federating States is a good way to spur development as last seen during the OBJ tenure. But I guess this post is all about instigating an ethnic cockfight.... so will not produce anything sensible. Not to my taste. |
maasoap:That is what we say. The people sending mixed signals to government as to what they want. Like a traffic light showing red, yellow and green at the same time. Mixed signals will cause accidents sooner than later. |
crystalpapers:This is exactly what I am saying. Sincerity. And how important the issue of collapsing buildings is to the public, the citizens. If citizens are TRULY angry about such things they will act against government. The government in turn will then act against the regulators and the regulators will be up and doing to checkmate bad practices. That is how society works well. But when there is no consensus amongst the citizens (as we can see from some posts above) as to the right course of action against malpractices then regulators fall through the cracks and crime spirals out of control. And this is the problem with Nigeria in all aspects of life, a people that always pander to sentiment and without shared values will continue to expose themselves to misrule. |
Dcaliphate:If those structures were illegally built they can be demolished at any time. It is like a fraudster caught after he has deceived many or a robber nabbed after operating for many years. Apprehension is an event even after a journey. What can help sanitize the industry is for government regulators to establish a whistle blower system if they are absolutely sincere about capping this problem. The construction industry has a lengthy value chain involving many operators and professionals so there is ample opportunity for any one conscionable and dissatisfied person to speak up on any specific establishment, project or structure that may pose a danger to his life, his profession or risk public health and safety as a result of risky practices no matter who is involved. But once again, the regulators have to be sincere and operate in absolute fidelity to protect such a system. To this end I suggest such an office can be established within Government House itself. |
Frank should not have come back. His reputation as a coach is in tatters. Cannot see a top team look his way ever again. |
Reference:What did I say.... You're playing away against the best team in the world right now and your defence is at the centre circle in line.... so naive. |
Game over, goodnight. |
Long night for the Gunners.... starting very jittery. Gabriel is holding such a high line giving plenty of room for counter attacks. |
Goldymafia:What is this concept of 'he worked' as an excuse for harbouring morally unfit people in the corridors of power. Where else in this world is this the standard of living. And how can you determine the level of work viz the resources at his disposal. Is this not what the rest of Nigeria has accused the south-south people of. The discordance between resources and deliverables...? But that is not even the premise of his undesirability. The fact is that he has been accused of mismanaging funds in every position of significance he has held in this dispensation. What is the guarantee that these allegations will not continue in the more critical office he seeks and what is the guarantee he will not be blackmailed by those seeking to hurt the country and its citizens on account of this. The reason why countries where the rule of law persists do not accept such things is simply for the security of the establishments these leaders command. He can compromise his duties, leak official secrets, sabotage processes if he is threatened with arrest and prosecution, leaks and embarrassment while in his official capacity. Finally, I will like to ask you. Can you employ such a person in your private business. Can you employ a person with a police case bordering on fraud or theft no matter what is written on his Resume....? Especially when such allegations are in the public domain. Can you trust such a person with the third command in your establishment. We know the reality of Nigeria today, that there are practically no leading figures of any personal credibility but there are some things so blatant that you simply cannot ignore them and then offer a prayer of hope. You yourself will know that no one will answer such prayers. This one is too blatant. |
Sir, what happens to all the corruption allegations hanging over your head. Are you sure the Executive arm which controls law enforcement exclusively won't use them to blackmail you to do its bidding.... even against the interests of Nigeria(ns).... just asking?... ![]() A system that simply cannot produce clean, competent and independent leadership is just fatally flawed. A system that always thrusts forward people with issues and complexities... making available Hobson's Choice is the problem. Folks, the problem is the game, not the players. This man will be blackmailed from May 2023 till May 2027. The people will get the short end of the stick.... again. |
Abeg make Shehu Sani and others rest please. Enough wood to the fire of this so called ethno-religious melting pot. |
thesicilian:Speak for yourself. For us there is no alternatives on television. But we warned of the consequences of a mismanaged inflatory economy. It affect everyone in every way. And right thinking citizens in developed countries punish governments that do not take such things seriously, not Nigerians. Television is not a luxury in 2023. |
Antimandatethie:This is exactly what we said. It was preventable. If and only if we had a viable National Assembly doing its JOB, overseeing the Executive. Then like Prof Teriba alluded the issue of the kind of debt we were incurring will have been rigorously debated and the best debt model arrived at. Democracy is all about debate, debates bring out ideas, often superior ideas through counter motions. Autocracies on the other hand run with one single idea, the idea of the principal which may not always be their best and is often in the interest of certain individuals against the general interest. So we can also see why all was done to ensure the National Assembly did not work and the opposition in the elections recently did not win, just so that backsides can be covered. This unfortunate lesson is for the general citizenry of this country. Vote for democracy, nothing else. Support democracy and it will take care of Nigeria no matter who is in power. And the fundamental principle we have missed this term is simple. And it is that badly performing governments are voted out, period. No sentiments. We have chosen sentiment and this is one of the bills to be paid. |
