Let them continue. At least, they are making it easy to be caught. Please, read a little bit about the bourgeoisie and you will understand why blacks behave that way. A poor black man living in Mushin gets rich, the first thing in his mind is relocating to Ikoyi/Lekki. The same neighborhood where u grow up and they didn't kill you. The same neighborhood where you eat ewa agoyin with your friends. If at all you are afraid because of ur new status, then fix the neighborhood don't run away. Bring your neighborhood to ur status. The same thing is happening to blacks in America. A rapper from the hood suddenly becomes a multi-millionaire, he forgets those boys struggling. Those boys too will start envying him and be aiming that status. They too will be saying in their minds that "dem go take once I hit my own millions"

My final submission:
Check my write up again. The guy is not running away from soda because of chemicals, he's running away cos of calories in which it doesn't make sense in that scenario where he just munched 3k calories pizza. That was a result of half-backed information that we are used to in Nigeria.

Filling your stomach is more of psychology, that's why gastric bypass irritation by vomiting makes food addicts stop. The vomits is sending a new message to their minds about the stomach filling. If you are used to eating a lot, your mind will tell you to eat even if you are not hungry. Filling your stomach with all the fibers in this world MAY or MAY NOT totally stop bad eating habits.

This discussion is basically Sugar content cos if it is not you won't outrightly says "juicing is sugary" and forgot all the great vitamins & minerals that juicing/blending makes more potent. So, the guy that refers to her Grandma said diabetes. His Grandma may be suffering from other diseases caused by any other content in the soda.

This is my first post you replied to and I still stand with it:
"Two ways to help her;
}
1. Thoroughly enlighten her more about the dangers of diabetes. Diabetes could lead to amputation. Try to go check her blood sugar.
2. Find her alternatives: Juicing is a good alternative. If you can afford a juicer, buy one for her. Always fill your fridge with fruits like Carrot, Pineapple, banana, watermelon, apple, oranges, lime, etc. Juice them and keep in the fridge. Remember, natural juice cannot last more than 2/3 days. It's the dangerous additives in your carbonated drinks that make them last for years. Don't forget to check the gram of sugar in fruits you want to blend."
}

You outrightly said "juicing is sugary". That is a wrong assumption. I still very stand on my conclusion, check the gram of sugar n any fruits you want to juice. There are nice juicers like "Champion" or "Greenstar". What you juice or blend will determine if juice is sugary or not. You can juice at home and still live below or around the daily recommended sugar intake.

midnighter:
I mean I want to know how much of each fruit you put into the juice otherwise its just the same as a sugary smoothie. I already explained this so I don't understand why you are repeating the same thing

I don't understand what high sugar content that you can read at the back of the juice carton and see for yourself has to do with propaganda

Your friend is unhealthy but that doesn't mean that soda is healthy. If somebody takes pizza with water it's still better than if he takes it with soda. That means the health campaigns warning about taking too much sugary drinks are working.

I don't understand what this story has to do with the topic at hand since the OPs mum drinks plenty of soft drinks every day. You are just talking around the subject without getting to the point. If you eat a normal diet but drink 10 bottles of coke a day, is it good?

At the bolded, I already said that this is about daily sugar intake and you argued that it depends on the type of juice. Now you're saying it depends on daily sugar intake which I said already

A fat person should do more of blending than juicing so that he will fill his stomach with fibre and not be tempted to take snacks.

The guys grandma takes soft drinks all the time and it's still bad for her whether anybody sees it or not. Exercise has nothing to do with filling your body with chemicals

I fully agree with you Bro, there is always an exception. I won't count you as an exception until you have that so called small $500k at hand and stopped. Tell me how many people collected MMM returns once and stopped. Tell me how many people win Sports Betting once (Bet9ja, nairabet, bet365) and stopped. Tell me how many people hit jackpot once and stopped. If people are stopping once they win, Kessington Adebutu won't be that rich. If people are stopping once they win, the guy that brought MMM to Nigeria won't run away to Philippines with 8 Billion Naira. If people are stopping once they win, Akin Alabi won't worth Billions today. If people are stopping once they win, many shops would have closed down in Las Vegas.

Small $500k. Let me tell a little bit about the human psycho. Once you get the so called small $500k, your mindset will change. Your mind will tell u that, you can get $1m next time, and it just continues like that, maybe until you are caught. That's why lottery owners, sports bookmakers and wonder banks (sogun dogoji) never lose. They only need you to win once, the rest is history. You will "chase the dragon" forever and may never experience any win again. It's like drug addiction. Drug addicts chase that first day feeling forever. They keep increasing their dosage just to have that same feeling they got the first time they used d hard drug.

Health › Re: Help: My Mum Won't Stop Taking Carbonated Drinks by saajus:
I used a lot of low sugar fruits like avocado, lime, some veggies, etc. Remember, those are natural sugars that can easily breakdown. Google can help list the sugar content of fruits/food/veggies. You know the problem, many big companies sponsor researches with propaganda mindsets. The people behind these fruits and smoothies propaganda research are your soda companies. People should not just condemn things outrightly without explaining in detail to people.

I have a friend who eats pizza with bottled water. If you ask him why he'll tell you he's watching his weight. Not because he's afraid of sugar. I will tell him, why not kuku finish the killing. You just ate 3000 Calories in one sitting and you are afraid of 220cal soda can. That's d danger of people not really understanding why. Maybe he watched a show and someone just condemns soda outrightly without explanation. Imagine if the only thing I eat daily is 1 bottle of coke and 2 slices of bread. Yes I drink soda daily but I may not get diabetes because I have not exceeded the daily recommended intake. I may be malnourished though. Even pizza itself is not bad. It is one of the most complete food in the world. If you eat a box, just know you have exceeded your daily calorie intake and stop eating for that day.

Juicing is not a crime, Smoothie is not a crime, So far you understand what you are mixing and stay within the range of recommended daily intake. You outrightly said juicing is worst than blending whereas both of them are used in different scenarios. Fiber is good but must it be taken all the time. A fat person must understand he needs more juicing than blending and get more fiber from his other calories intake.

A guy in this comment session said his Grandma takes soda everyday and she has no diabetes. She's over 90 years old now. Some people will see that as a motivation to continue taking soda but the guy did not tell us his Grandma's whole eating habits and lifestyle. Maybe she doesn't take anything sugar again after the daily soda. Maybe Mama always exercises, he didn't tell us. Some people will hear his first statement and run with it.

Health is very important and simple books and googling could expose a lot of information to us.

midnighter:
1. Juicing is even worse than blending! At least with blending you will still have some of the pulp from the fruit but juicing just takes the fibre away. And you will lose some of the nutrients like antioxidants etc. The only benefit of juicing is that the nutrients are more concentrated. But so is the sugar! Even more sugar than some soft drinks

2. If you read my original comment, you will see that I advocated for whole fruits. So I didnt take the sugar away, I just recommended it in a different form

3. Okay tell me what exactly you put in that juice, let me see. Because i doubt you can drink more than 1 bottle of it in a day without causing problems for yourself. One bottle will not be acceptable to this woman
Health › Re: Help: My Mum Won't Stop Taking Carbonated Drinks by saajus: 6:23pm On Oct 24, 2019
My brother, the problem itself is not natural juice but what you are juicing. Remember juicing is different from blending that produces smoothie. If I show you my own green juice, it doesn't look appealing on a commercial value but I know the content of everything I blend. I can still juice and get a very low sugar content. Juicing is still one of the best ways to acquire the required vitamins into your body. If it is about thirst-quenching, water is the best but we are analyzing an issue of addiction here. For a sugar addict, you can't just take everything away.

midnighter:
We are not talking about natural and artificial sugar. We are talking about sugar content.

Juice is sugary. There is a difference between cutting up 2 oranges into pieces and eating and blending plenty of oranges into juice.

One orange just produces just 4 spoons of juice. So how many oranges will it take just to make one bottle? You will be drinking liquid sugar and your case will be a sad one. Drinking the equivalent of 10 or 12 oranges every day, on top of your usual akpu and soup, is a total disaster!

Doctors (and dentists) have been running helter skelter trying to get people to stop taking "smoothies" thinking that they are healthy when in fact they are the worst culprits for high blood sugar. And when you blend fruits you destroy the natural roughage that helps your body to process the excess sugar gradually. Total system overload.

What you're saying can only make sense if the lady agrees just to take one or two glasses of "juice" a day. Does it look like she is going to do that huh

It is a temporary pain. If Naija unemployed youths are wise, they better go to farm. Buy or lease 5/10 acres of farm and plant anything. Oyo state is leasing for 3k Naira per acre. Sales and Profits are sure if the border remain closed for another 6mths.

Rajman45:
Those people supporting the border closure ( myself included) should also have it in mind that we the Nigeria masses are also suffering from it.
Due diligence was not taken before closing the borders. Prices of goods are skyrocketing right now in Nigeria and truth be told, it will only get worse.
I pray that all the countries involved should act quickly and efficiently resolve the problem.

Health › Re: Help: My Mum Won't Stop Taking Carbonated Drinks by saajus: 5:31am On Oct 24, 2019
How is juice sugary? Read the difference between added sugar and natural sugar. Natural sugar is less harmful than added sugar present in soft drinks. Also, what you blend into juice will determine if it will be sugary or not. He should research about low sugar fruits and vegetables. Juicing is the best alternative for her mum. Blend low sugar fruits like strawberry, lemon, oranges and add little high sugar fruit like Banana to make your mum feel that sugar taste.

midnighter:
So she's craving sugar? Women experience sugar cravings a lot

Get her to take fresh fruit instead. Be buying it for her and washing and cutting it up for her, put it inside a container with a fork and give her

Dont blend it into juice because juice is very sugary as well

If it is also an addictive behaviour you can be packing groundnut, seeds, maybe some dark chocolate etc for her to chew and satisfy her oral fixation
Health › Re: Help: My Mum Won't Stop Taking Carbonated Drinks by saajus:
Gene is a loaded gun, it is our diet and lifestyle that trigger it. Your grandmother is an exception. She may not even be an exception. What if one carbonated drink is the only sugar source she takes daily. That's about 35g. She's still within the recommended daily intake for added sugar. Give us her entire diet and lifestyle before we can conclude.

Tinamoore:
Op, you may consider saving your self this anxiety over your mum's consumption of carbonated drinks. You know why?
Right from my infant age, my grandmother consumed more carbonated drinks than any one else I knew. She's over 90 years now. Still very healthy, rarely gets sick except body ache from time to time. Last time her sugar level was tasted, it was perfect according to the doctor, no high blood pressure.excellent sight etc.
So you see, at times we bother ourselves over nothing.
P.S I am not supporting too much consumption of carbonated drinks. Try all you can to make her stop, but if she insists, consider saving your self some stress.

Family › Re: How Do I Save For The Future So As Not To Learn The Hard Way? by saajus:
Invest in learning; keep improving yourself
Invest in your career: Buy books, go to seminars/conferences
Save: for emergency
Invest in a business: Farming, transportation (Uber), software applications, etc. If you don't know any reliable business, keep buying land in reasonable places and fence them to avoid intruders. You can also invest in Treasury Bill/Bond/Fixed Deposit. Those investments are almost zero risks. You can make 11-13% annually on Treasury Bill. The only problem with TB/FD/Bond is that Naija inflation may nullify almost half of your profit.
Invest in your health: You can't make money if you are sick. Watch what and where you eat. Eat fruits and vegetables. Exercise at least 3 times a week.

Things to avoid if you don't want to experience the same thing you experienced while growing up:
Don't live beyond your means
Avoid too many parties and Aso Ebi
Avoid eating out. If you spend 1k Naira daily eating out, that's 365k in a year. Cook at home. Do mass cooking in the weekend and store them in the fridge/freezer. You are better of spending money to buy petrol to keep your freezer working for 4hrs than spending 365k/yr eating out.
Avoid waste, only buy what you need
Learn to say no. People will come with problems, always tell them that you would have helped if they had come the previous day. If you are highly moral and don't want to lie, then throw all your cash to FD/TB/Bond. That means you will always be broke automatically. Your main responsibility is your immediate family if you are not married, especially your parents. You need to be wise with siblings sometimes

contumely2:
I am a man in late 20's.
I grew up in lack. I suffered so much growing up. In fact, at a point the court had to eject us and threw our properties on the streets for inability to pay rent.

School fees were paid in instalments. Not like the fees were much even. But the funds were never there.

God has blessed me reasonably in the past few years. I made a lot of sacrifices too, denying myself pleasure, delaying gratification etc.

Lately, I noticed that I have been extravagant. Some of the extravagance is masked as charity to people.

I hardly say no requests and I empathise and pity people a lot.

If I lend money to 10 persons, only 3 will pay back.

I also buy some things on impulse; without planning. I regret some of these purchases later.

HOW DO I STAY motivated so as to save more to invest because the future is uncertain. And money is not always there?

I also understand that those we help may abandon us in time of need.

I don't want to learn the hard way.

Kindly share your experiences with grace to grass; or with people you helped in times of plenty.

Or your regrets with finances especially early in life.

Thanks!
