Career › Re: How Can I Be Outstanding As The New Accountant by sharpman1(m): 5:06pm On Aug 26, 2010 |
james jami: Hello my peeps, I av just been appointed as the accountant for a sister company of the company where I work presently. I am a chartered accountant by profession and I know that my employer will be expecting nothing but the best from me.
The sister company I will be joining in some weeks time never had an accountant since inception. In other words, I will be the first accountant and it is important that I lay a very good foundation. I see this as an opportunity to advance my career in accounting. I need your advice on the things I can do on the job to be the best and much more an asset to the company.
Thank you. Since it's a new role and you are going to be the first Accountant for the firm, then you have a lot of catching up to do. It is likely that accounting records are not in place yet so you will have to generate data and bring the records up to date. Since you have some experience as an accountant and you are chartered, that should not be much of a problem. The challenge will usually be the amount of time you will have to invest to bring your records up to date. It is not a pleasant thing at all but you will have to do it and fast too. To add value and be outstanding, you will also need to break yourself free from the traditional role of an Accountant. Your job is not ONLY to churn out figures. You will need to be more analytical and proactive with your reports, so that you can generate more value adding reports which surface pertinent issues. Time Management and Personal Effectiveness will be key. I am sure you will have a network of friends that are also Accountants with lots of relevant experience. Feel free to call them and seek for advise if you have challenges with any area you are not conversant with. With time, you will get a hang of the entire system and you will just do stuffs by default. Wish you the best and enjoy the experience. |

The job market is highly competitive.
An employer asks for individuals with a first class degree, a professional qualification, minimum of 2 yrs work experience and maximum age of 24 and you can be sure 'a thousand and one' people will apply for the position even when there are two slots available.
That is one of the reasons (i think) we have the craze for all sorts of academic and professional qualifications (foreign or local) and because we can't really verify performance on the job till you actually start working, the paper qualifications are usually used to judge at the first instance. |

ednut1: Sorry 2 say but d truth is bitter your friend has no chance of passing acca it is only for brilliant students the 2.1/ and sm 2.2. As u said he could nt graduate afta 2 extra yrs due to carry overs i suppose. He shld nt waste over £400 for reg and 4 papers and materials. He should 4get accn and go 4 lesser courses like sociology/po science. A word is enough Nonsense!!! what sort of post is this? How can you conclude that someone cannot pass an exam? Some people are just completely foolish @OP Your friend can successfully write the ACCA exams from scratch in 2.5 years if he's determined to succeed (and his background is not relevant to this decision). All he needs to do is to show his determination not only in words but also in ACTIONS. I am not saying this to make him feel good, i am saying this because i know that it is possible. I know someone with a 3rd class degree (not in Accounting) and because he believed he was worth more than the class of degree he got from his school decided to write the ACCA exams. He excelled so well that he performed better than even people with 1st class in Accounting. He finished the exams in 2.5 yrs without having to repeat ANY paper and capped it with a first class in the Oxford Brookes/ACCA BSc in Applied Accounting. He currently works as an Accountant and also teaches ACCA. No one would believe he ever made a 3rd class. Now, Accounting is second nature to him. The ACCA exams is NOT easy or simple, but your friend can excel if he applies himself appropriately. As for going fro NYSC with the Oxford Brookes degree, i am not certain about that because i have not seen anyone use it for the NYSC program but he can use it to apply for an MSc or MBA in the UK. If he wants some motivation, i can arrange a meeting with the guy i talked about in person. Tell him not to give up as his destiny is in his own hands. |

Christianity Etc › Re: Are Large/Mega-churches Biblical? How Large Is A Church Supposed To Be? by sharpman1(m): 3:42pm On Apr 15, 2010 |
Analytical: Folks,
Just to make some quick observations:
The scriptures made it clear that the early church not only met from house to house (smaller groups), they actually also met in large congregations using upper rooms (more like halls in the upper floor of buildings), Solomon’s Porch (a large space within the outer court of the temple) that can take a large gathering etc. They all couldn’t have been living in Solomon’s Porch!
Acts 2: 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Acts 5 11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things
12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.
14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)
42 And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
As the number grew so did their needs and they continued to meet as a congregation and from house to house:
Acts 6
1 Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.
2 So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables.
3 "Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.
Then entered Stephen and the other deacons selected to take charge of the daily administration of needs etc. There is nothing wrong in coming together as large congregation but care must also be taken that no one is neglected by also meeting from house to house and in smaller groups. This was what the early church did.
Check the Church at Corinth below and notice how distinction is made between when they come together as congregation and when they are in their houses:
1 Cor 11 18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.
21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.
22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
The early church was not a perfect one, just as ours is also not a perfect one. They had their own Annanais and Saphirra etc Even in the midst of the 12 small group close to Jesus, there was a Judas 'The Betrayer' Iscariot, a Peter 'The Denier' Simon and a Thomas 'The Doubter' Didymus! Acts 6 sounds so familiar, especially when the church is growing, hence the wisdom in appointing deacons who attend to the needs of the congregation.
JeSoul and all who love His appearing, God bless you richly. Wonderful!!!

Christianity Etc › Re: Are Large/Mega-churches Biblical? How Large Is A Church Supposed To Be? by sharpman1(m): 9:03am On Apr 15, 2010 |
The bible is silent as to the size of the church. . . . . . . . .as long as a church is fulfilling it's purpose. . . . . . then there's nothing wrong.
But there's no perfect church yet. . . . . . as ALL churches (big or small) have one issue or the other.
I believe we should focus on KEY issues and not stuffs that are trivial.
The issue should be. . . . . Is the church doing the right thing or not. . . . . . and not. . . . . Is the church too big or not. |

This is getting very amusing,
Is 'Be who u r' the same guy the OP was referring to when she said that
without exaggerating too much, he is the most perfect man to me. He is tall, dark, handsome, hardworking and very kind to a fault. He helps people at will and takes no offence whatsoever at my excesses except i over do it to a fault and instead of getting mad at me to hit me or abuse me, he just walks away for an hour or 2 and comes back as if nothing happens.
she also said this about the guy
The thing is that he is very brilliant and intelligent
I hope it's not the same person as 'Be who u r' strikes me as someone who is childish and lacks understanding. He does not seem to be a patient fellow and he also seem like someone that actually takes offence.
The OP painted him in the best light possible and he comes here saying all sorts of rubbish and that the OP was setting him up for insults. If it's the same person, then I think he has started showing his true color. |

Tudór: According to you, even if the banks pay 10,000 a month, its right as long as the staff agree. . . That is pathetic! According to me. . . . . ANY ORGANIZATION (not just banks) has the right to determine what it feels it can afford as wages depending on what it considers the value the staff is adding to the organization. . . . . . .as an individual, i have the right to accept a certain amount as salary if i feel it is reasonable and reject if i believe it is beneath me. Shikena!!! When the banks were declaring massive profits, they were paying what some people called 'armed robber' salaries now they are going through challenges and they need to adapt and the easiest expense line to reduce is staff cost. They either sack or reduce salaries. If the bank liquidates, EVERYONE will be asked to go home and there won't be any staff left to pay. Business is not run on sentiments but on common sense and the survival of the organization should supersede that of any individual. |

Tudór: Have you ever heard the term Modern day Slavery?. Please google it and find the modern meaning of slavery, definitions have transversed dragging a blackman across the ocean and forcing him to work in a farm. Tudor, did you google the term modern day slavery The point is THIS IS NOT forced labor, human trafficking or stuffs like that. An organization has employed an individual or a group of individuals. . . . .they would be paid wages. . . . . and the wages to be paid are usually agreed. . . . if you don't like the offer. . . . . then DON'T TAKE IT!!! Simple. Would you prefer the bank asking about half of its workforce to leave |
Career › Re: Zenith Bank's Employment by sharpman1(m): 3:59pm On Mar 12, 2010 |
Nonsense!!! This IS NOT slavery. Nobody has forced you to remain there and you are not in chains being whipped to work. An organization will only pay what the owners feel they can afford to pay. If you don't like it go and start your own bank or company. Were you forced to apply for the job? Are you being forced to remain there? Do you know how many job seekers are out there looking for the small opportunity you've got? Instead of complaining why don't you SIT DOWN and figure a way out. |
