Politics / Jonathan Secretly Orders Atiku's Disqualification From Pdp Primaries by soldee: 9:23am On Dec 20, 2010
From JACOB EDI, Abuja
Monday, December 20, 2010
Sun News

Barely one week after the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced the date for its presidential primaries for next year’s general election, there are fresh plots to disqualify the northern consensus candidate and former vice president, Atiku Abubakar.

According to a document, now available to Daily Sun, part of the plan is to seek to stop the party primaries in the event that Atiku is cleared to vie for the presidential primaries of the party. In fact, the party’s leadership has been given a 10-day ultimatum to disqualify the former vice president or risk the commencement of a legal action.

A letter dated December 17, 2010, entitled ‘Disqualification of Atiku Abubakar From Participation at the January 13, 2011, PDP Presidential Primaries by Screening Panel,’ raised questions over the eligibility of Atiku as a member of the party and that the waiver granted him by the 53rd National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party was invalid and wrong procedurally.

The letter, addressed to the chairman of the Presidential Screening Committee, copies of which were sent to all the party’s stakeholders, insisted that Atiku had also violated the guidelines of the party in his bid to stage-manage his return to the party. The nine-page document was signed by Dr. Udeh Obinna, Faruk Garba, Chief Osoba Fasewe and John Timipriye on behalf of PDP Stakeholders Forum.

The letter also claimed that Atiku neither got the primary election participation waiver nor the returnee waiver, which contravened Articles 17 (2) g, 8 and 10 (b) iii of the PDP constitution, adding that his return to the party was without the recommendation of his state chapter to the National Working Committee (NWC).

“Atiku was expelled from the party during the build-up to the 2007 general election for heavy anti-party activities and corruption indictment, which led to the loss his membership of the party. The constitution of the PDP stipulates that once he signifies interest to return to the party, he must be re-admitted by his state exco and thereafter his waiver request shall be forwarded to NEC via the NWC. The waiver granted Atiku is for the purpose of being accepted back as an ordinary member of the party and not for the purpose of crossing the requirement for eligibility to contest primary election. This procedure was not followed by Atiku,” the letter noted.

While insisting that the waiver granted Atiku was consequent upon a letter he personally wrote to the party, the PDP Stakeholders Forum concluded: “So, the bottom line is that the waiver is a nullity and not tenable. Atiku is statutorily not a bona fide member of the PDP and has no valid waiver upon which to contest election under the party platform.”

The group also said that Atiku’s reliance on the report of the Ekwueme report as grounds for his waiver claim is not tenable since according to them the report “is an ad hoc report of NEC, which was not presented to the national convention for ratification and cannot override the express requirement of the PDP constitution, which makes eligibility and membership issues a purely party constitutional issue.”

Part of the reasons given to the committee for the disqualification of Atiku included allegations that he had in the last couple of months criticised the PDP-led government as well as made statements that threatened not only the unity of the party but the corporate entity of the Nigerian state. But the Atiku Campaign Organisation has dismissed the contents of the letter, saying it was lacking in depth and fact.

Politics / Sanusi Lamido Faults Sir Olaniwun Ajayi On Northern Domination by soldee: 12:37pm On Nov 04, 2010
by Hamza Gwadabe on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 2:55pm

The Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, surprised guests present at the Muson Centre for the launching of the book of Sir Olaniwun Ajayi at the Muson Centre in Lagos.

The book titled: “Nigeria, Africa’s failed asset?” attracted many important dignitaries, intellectuals and some governors.

“Let me start by saying that I am Fulani (laughter). My grandfather was an Emir and therefore I represent all that has been talked about this afternoon. Sir Ajayi has written a book. And like all Nigerians of his generation, he has written in the language of his generation.

“My grandfather was a Northerner, I am a Nigerian. The problem with this country is that in 2009, we speak in the language of 1953. Sir Olaniwun can be forgiven for the way he spoke, but I can not forgive people of my generation speaking in that language.

“Let us go into this issue because there are so many myths that are being bandied around.

Before colonialism, there was nothing like Northern Nigeria. Before the Sokoto Jihad, there was nothing like the Sokoto caliphate. The man from Kano regard himself as bakane. The man from Zaria was bazazzage. The man from Katsina was bakatsine. The kingdoms were at war with each other. They were Hausas, they were Muslims, they were killing each other.

“The Yoruba were Ijebu, Owo, Ijesha, Akoko, Egba. When did they become one? When did the North become one? You have the Sokoto Caliphate that brought every person from Adamawa to Sokoto and said it is one kingdom. They now said it was a Muslim North.

“The Colonialists came, put that together and said it is now called the Northern Nigeria. Do you know what happened? Our grand fathers were able to transform to being Northerners. We have not been able to transform to being Nigerians. The fault is ours.

Tell me, how many governors has South West produced after Awolowo that are role models of leadership? How many governors has the East produced like Nnamdi Azikiwe that can be role models of leadership? How Many governors in the Niger Delta are role models of leadership? Tell me. There is no evidence statistically that any past of this country has produced good leaders.

You talk about Babangida and the economy. Who were the people in charge of the economy during Babangida era? Olu Falae, Kalu Idika Kalu. What state are they from in the North?

“We started the banking reform; the first thing I heard was that in Urobo land, that there will be a curse of the ancestors. I said they (ancestors) would not answer. They said why? I said how many factories did Ibru build in Urobo land?
So, why will the ancestors of the Urobo people support her?

“We talk ethnicity when it pleases us. It is hypocrisy. You said elections were rigged in 1959, Obasanjo and Maurice Iwu rigged election in 2007. Was it a Southern thing? It was not.

“The problem is: everywhere in this country, there is one Hausa, Ibo, Yoruba and Itshekiri man whose concern is how to get his hands on the pile and how much he can steal.

Whether it is in the military or in the civilian government, they seat down, they eat together. In fact, the constitution says there must be a minister from every state.

“So, anybody that is still preaching that the problem of Nigeria is Yoruba or Hausa or Fulani, he does not love Nigeria. The problem with Nigeria is that a group of people from each and every ethnic tribe is very selfish. The poverty that is found in Maiduguri is even worse than any poverty that you find in any part of the South. The British came for 60 years and Sir Ajayi talked about few numbers of graduates in the North (two at independence). What he did not say was that there was a documented policy of the British when they came that the Northerner should not be educated. It was documented. It was British colonial policy. I have the document. I have published articles on it. That if you educate the Northerner you will produce progressive Muslim intellectuals of the type we have in Egypt and India. So, do not educate them. It was documented. And you say they love us (North).

“I have spent the better part of my life to fight and Dr. (Reuben) Abati knows me. Yes, my grandfather was an Emir. Why was I in the pro-democracy movement fighting for June 12? Is (Moshood) Abiola from Kano? Why am I a founding director of the Kudirat Initiative for Nigerian Development (KIND)?

“There are good Yoruba people, good Igbo people, good Fulani people, good Nigerians and there are bad people everywhere. That is the truth.

“Stop talking about dividing Nigeria because we are not the most populous country in the world. We have all the resources that make it easy to make one united great Nigeria. It is better if we are united than to divide it.

“Every time you talk about division, when you restructure, do you know what will happen? In Delta, Area, the people in Warri will say Agbor, you don’t have oil. When was the Niger Delta constructed as a political enlity? Ten years ago, the Itshekiris were fighting the Urobos. Isn’t that what was happening? Now they have become Niger Delta because they have found oil. After, it will be, if you do not have oil in your village then you can not share our resources.

“There is no country in the world where resources are found in everybody’s hamlet. But people have leaders and they said if you have this geography and if we are one state, then we have a responsibility for making sure that the people who belong to this country have a good nature.

“So, why don’t you talk about; we don’t have infrastructure, we don’t have education, we don’t have health. We are still talking about Fulani. Is it the Fulani cattle rearer or is anybody saying there is no poverty among the Fulani?”, he said

Politics / Jonathan, Ibb, Others Reach Accord Soon by soldee: 5:13pm On Oct 25, 2010
Monday, 25 October 2010

The increasingly fractious struggle for the 2011 presidential ticket of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] would be amicably resolved because President Goodluck Jonathan will soon reach a compromise with his four main rivals. Director General of the Jonathan/Sambo campaign Ambassador Dalhatu Sarki Tafida said this in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, yesterday.

Speaking when the led a campaign team to visit Governor Sule Lamido, Tafida said Jonathan’s rivals for the party ticket, namely General Ibrahim Babangida, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, General Aliyu Mohamed Gusau and Governor Bukola Saraki, have “all been treated fairly.”

He said, “We are doing everything to treat them with respect and therefore we hope and pray that in the final analysis, we will reach a compromise.”

Tafida also said when he was asked to head the Jonathan presidential campaign team, he was not comfortable because he did not see any true politicians around him. He however said with men such as Governor Lamido around him, he was now comfortable.

According to Tafida, the team was in Jigawa State to meet with party stakeholders and to seek for their support for President Goodluck Jonathan. The Jonathan/Sambo campaign boss told Lamido that his team had so far visited 12 states including Jigawa as part of its tour of the 36 states.

Governor Lamido told the team that, all the presidential aspirants are senior members of the party; hence, they should be listening for the goodness of the party and the country as well.

Governor Lamido said as a family, PDP members must strive hard to salvage the country. He said “between 1999 to 2007 it was Northern crisis. Some people even abandoned the party in 2007 to other political parties for personal interest. They abandoned Nigerians in PDP. Now they are coming back to us.”

“Between 2007 and 2010, when Yar’adua was alive, the crisis within the party was purely Northern battle. It was northerner that was challenging his fellow northern brother. The northerners challenged Yar’adua. Where were they when Nigeria was in coma in 1999?”

He however called on the team to do everything possible to defend the integrity and sanctity of the party, the country and the democracy. PDP, he said, has restored the lost glory of the country, hence its members should not let this glory to be lost again.

Lamido also said, “You are not campaigning for President Jonathan and Sambo, but you are campaigning to restore the integrity and culture of PDP and democracy. We must work hard to bring to Nigeria the best candidate for 2011 elections.”

He told the team that no one from other political parties can rival the PDP’s candidate. He said unlike other political parties such as the Action Congress of Nigerian (ACN), PDP is not owned by individual. Lamido also advised the team to do all it can to bring other aspirants under the PDP together with a view to winning the forthcoming elections.

Reacting to Tafida’s claims last night, head of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s media campaign Malam Garba Shehu said, “Our basic position is that Jonathan ought not to be in the race. If he has any respect for the party’s constitution and even the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he must not run. He is not the moral equivalent of the four candidates. He has no right to be in the race. It is clear he wants to seize it by force in violation of the party’s constitution.”

The only way we can move forward in this country is when we put our religious, cultural and ethnic differences aside to achieve economic and political growth. Let work together to put the right people there in respective of where he/she is from.Nigeria is greater dan an individual or group of people.

I was initially against zoning, but seeing as Nigeria is unrepentantly a tribal society, it is now very obviously IMPOSSIBLE to have an ISSUES BASED CAMPAIGN when you have candidates from different regions! Nigerians are just not that sophisticated yet. We will line up behind our tribesman when push comes to shove.

So pls, lets zone this race to anywhere, Igbo, ND, in fact, 'zone' it to high heavens. Once all the players are from the same area, we can all switch off from 'kunta kinte' mode and actually ask the players what they're bringing to the table. It is annoying when those who want to scuttle the peace are obviously playing up the tribal card KNOWING FULLY WELL that the entire country would go up in flames because of it, AND WE ARE ALL FALLING FOR IT - JUST READ NAIRALAND!!!

Better yet, lets make the state people were born in their compulsory State of Origin, then it will be a level playing field and Emeka can come from Katsina, Ibrahim can come from bayelsa, Ekaette an be from Kwara, Folorunsho can be from maiduguri, Bulus can be from Lagos. then lets VOTE

I'm shocked that you have even joined them in calling GEJ incompetent. Don't you think they are only trying to give a dog a bad name inorder to hang it?

Don't forget that these Northern politicians have been issuing threats left, right and center, that they will ensure Nigeria becomes ungovernable for GEJ should he indicate interest to contest the 2011 presidential elections. Don't you think  they are fulfilling that threat through one disgruntled element called Okah?

My prayer is that GEJ should ensure ANYBODY involved in that dastardly act of bombing and any other national sabotage be dealt with decisively. Enough of this rubbish.

Yes, when people die, when innocent blood is spilled, civilized people stop the party. it becomes Ground-Zero. The show goes on as a mourning, a minute of silence is observed for the dead, and the President takes the opportunity to make a rallying cry for his people's support to stamp out the evils of the society. Politics / Dame Patience Gej Breached Protocol At Eagle Square Parade by soldee: 12:02am On Oct 03, 2010
http://www.saharareporters.com/news-page/first-lady-patience-jonathan-disses-protocol-independence-day-anniversary

Posted: October 2, 2010 - 02:35

Patience, wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, on Friday demonstrated utter disrespect for her husband and the office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at the 50th anniversary parade in Abuja.

Our correspondent at the ceremony reported that Patience, dressed in a white blouse, a white skirt and a green head gear, refused to rise up in respect for the president who was returning to his seat after decorating the army, navy, airforce and police chiefs with commemorative badges, and letting off of pigeons as a sign of peace.

As the president approached his seat on the VIP stand, Vice President Namadi Sambo and his wife, Amina, who were seated right of Jonathan rose in respect as demanded by protocol.

Other dignitaries, including former heads of state, visiting heads of states from other African countries, elder statesmen, top government functionaries among others, also rose in reverence to the leader of Africa's most populous country.

But the president's wife refused to rise for her husband. She simply looked away and remained glued to her seat.

She again breached protocol shortly afterward, when, after the ceremony, she stood by her husband's side to greet dignitaries who were filing past. Each dignitary was to greet and shake hands with the president and her.

However, at a point, Mrs. Jonathan soon got into a spirited and long discussion with an unidentified woman, and dignitaries who filed past her husband were not able to greet her. One of those who could not greet her was Muhammadu Buhari, a former head of state.

Before Patience breached protocol, the ceremony, for which the Nigerian government blew a princely N17 billion, had progressed without hitch. There were military parades, reviewed by the president, as well as a march and calisthenic display by school children. There armed forces also displayed their equipment to demonstrate their combat readiness.

Jonathan had earlier on Friday addressed the nation during which he admitted that successive governments had failed to deliver the dividends of independence to Nigerians.

"Our independence was gained by men and women who envisioned a land of freedom and one of opportunity. Our founding fathers sought a government of character, that seeks justice to her citizens as our national anthem so eloquently describes: One Nation Bound in Freedom, Peace and Unity. However, today, the opinion of many Nigerians is that these dreams and expectations have not been fulfilled," the president said in a radio and television broadcast.

"Not only have people despaired about the slow pace of progress, some have in fact given up on the country. Some believe that if the colonial masters had stayed longer, Nigeria may have been the better for it. All these postulations, we must admit, are borne out of a somewhat justifiable sense of frustration. Our troubles and failures are well catalogued. For a country that was, in terms of development, on a similar, if not better level with many countries at independence, it is discomforting that we are lagging behind as the economic indicators among nations now show."

He however blamed the country's backwardness on the civil war and military interventions in the nation's politics.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has apologised for causing the death of many people in the explosions which rocked the Federal capital yesterday.

In an email sent to journalists a moment ago, Jomo Gbomo, the spokesperson of the group, said the group "deeply regrets the avoidable loss of lives during our bomb attack in Abuja on Friday October 1, 2010. Our hearts go to the families of those killed who we know were sympathetic to our cause".

The group said the failure of security forces to heed a warning it had given five days before the attack is responsible for the deaths

"The irresponsible attitude of the government security forces is to blame for the loss of lives. They were given 5 days prior notice which led to the harassment of Henry Okah on Thursday, September 30 in South Africa."

It also claimed that an hour before the attack, security forces were reminded of the impending violence but failed to act. It said the email received by journalists a few minutes before the explosions was sent only after the one to security agents.

"The security forces were also warned one full hour to the first bomb blast ahead of the general alert sent to the media and told to steer the public from all parked cars which was not done."

The group's claim of responsibility for the attacks is coming hours after President Goodluck Jonathan said they were not responsible and blamed the explosions on terrorists.

Mr. Jonathan told an ECOWAS gathering in Abuja today that ``What happened yesterday was a terrorist act and MEND was just used as a straw; MEND is not a terrorist group".

"The Niger Delta people are aware of the government's noble efforts to assuage the suffering and deprivation in that region," the President said.

"I am from the Niger Delta, my father's house is few metres from an oil-well, so nobody can claim to be a Niger Deltan than myself.

"It is erroneous to think that my people who have been agitating for good living will deliberately blow up the opportunity they have now".

In a related development, Henry Okah, an alleged leader of the militant group, was arrested by South African police today and is being questioned.

On Thursday, Interpol forces raided Mr Okah's home in South Africa but no action was taken against him. It is not clear yet if he will be charged following his latest arrest.

However, the group has exonerated him of involvement in Friday's bombings that killed at least 12 people and injured tens of others. "Okah has never been involved in any MEND operations but has always been blamed for every attack which is strange to us," the group said.

And to think South African police just raided Henry Okah's home in SA at 3.00am last night after a tip-off from FG; the raid met him in his mansion with his wife and kids. By the way whats he doing maxing and relaxing in SA? Isn't there supposed to be a 'struggle' on ground?

It will be truly ironic if a Niger Delta President will have to give the order to flush MEND out, Biafra-style. What a bunch of monkeys. Because they're rantings have been tolerated they think they can match the might of the Nigerian military? If not for the fact that their membership is 'zoned' they would have been exterminated long ago with no allusions to tribalism!! GEJ pls flush out these creek rats and empower the real ND people, not brigands!!

Politics / Gej Will Disenfranchise Future South-south Generations Forever? by soldee: 12:59pm On Sep 28, 2010

Nigeria is a tribal society. The only way we can have an issue based campaign is when all the aspirants are from the same zone, then Nigerians can ask 'what are you bringing to the table?'. That was the whole point of zoning in the first place. Its amazing that the zone with the smallest population, who can never win an election on the might of only their votes, would be the ones jettisoning the zoning arrangement. Even if they win this round, history will forever punish them because south-south does not have the numerical clout to be president by true vote. GEJ is disenfranchising the next generation of south-southerners.

The North dominated the presidency for long. The south agitated for Zoning. So why would the South-South,the weakest link in the south and even in the country destroy zoning?

When a man eats his vomit know that the evil spirit has stolen his mind. Mr. President we thought you are an honest man, A process that produced you? What happens to your fellow south south brothers after your reign? Think again and please leave this ladder alone

Oh my God,in the interest of tommorow, let the Niger Delta people work to ensure that zoning is not abandoned. It was meant to protect the weak. And Ijaw and Niger-delta people are minorities against the 3 major ethnic groups.

They are all the same!! Nigeria stopped OBJs Third Term yet he's back pulling the strings of his puppet!!

So what?

Soludo is Akunyili's inlaw
Mrs. Anenih was Tony Anenih's wife
Iyabo Obasanjo's father was President
Adamu Ciroma as been Minister since the early '70's. When old age took over, Mrs. Ciroma became Minister
David Mark's daughter is an FCT Commissioner
IBB's daughter is now a First Lady (lol!)
Segun Awolowo was an FCT Commissioner
Shagari's son has been a Minister twicel
Former Gov. Gwadabe's wife was made a Senator
Bla bla bla. If they were to all hold hands they could circle the whole of Nigeria with their grip (that's if they're not doing so already cheesy)

In fact, I think someone should start a new thread - Nigerian politicians and affiliates - fill in the blanks grin grin
