foluade: Does anybody know any company in Nigeria where I can buy Cassava processing machine. I am mainly interested in making Gari. Thanks.
Not rocket science.

1) FIIRO in Lagos
2) PRODA in Enugu
3) NASENI (either in Nasarawa or FCT, I am not sure).

The above three are government parastatals.

Private ones:

1) Capsfeed Ltd in Ibadan
2) Niji-Lukas Nig. Ltd

I have all the price lists but will not give that information. You contact the firms individually and do your homework.

Brimmie: FIXED! cheesy
There is nothing fixed about the picture. Look at the shadows from the men; they all align.

This is not new. If you look at TD Jakes when he is preaching church, take a good look at the two persons seating on each side of a front row pew. You will see the one on the right facing and looking at the crowd on the right, and the one on the left facing the left and looking at the crowd on the left. How do I know those are security guards? They never show the same excitement that the rest of the church shows during service. They do not smile and carry plastic faces: totally focused on their work.

I have seen at least one instance of a man who supposedly came for an altar call attacking a pastor physically. If I see the videos, I will put them here. Aha, here is one:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlCOSUXp7kQ

However, my personal view is that this is a bit extreme. We can have the type of security we see at the Potter's House where TD Jakes is the Senior Pastor. We are not in a war zone for crying out loud.

ytex82: Pls am seriously interested in the manual.I sent a request earlier but got no reply.will appreciate if u could send payment detail 2 mee(ytex82@yahoo.ca)
For some time I have stopped selling this manual because too many people ask for payment details and do nothing. I can't keep giving out my banking information to strangers.

So what I have decided to do is this. I will give the manual out to serious people at the cost of N10,000. This will show me who is serious or not. If you want the payment info, send an SMS to 08137971851.

Anyone who feels the price is too high should simply walk away. No one is putting a gun to your head. Sorry if I am blunt or mean, but that is how I have decided to handle the issue now.

Oshare, this is a business competition and so if you are asking people for their thoughts on your business plan, 99% of them will give you a million and one reasons why it will not work and they will either mislead you or pull you down.

You better write your plan based on your own convictions. Do not let anyone do that for you. This is the best advice I can give you.

blink182: You made a lot of sense but I still think magazine business is a bad business especially in Nigeria, it is a luxury item and N10m is not enough to sustain a good magazine unless she wants to produce those funny magazines with glossy coloured outside and paper one colour inside. those magazines are just hideous. One good point you made though is that she should know her business very and she can sell any business plan.

Finally, my business is a web application not a website building firm, I see no future for website building companies, you can't survive and have a workforce based on just building websites except you want to augment income from other sources, I speak from experience.
Anyone who has done a business in the Nigerian environment (like me from my teenage hustling of the late 80s till date) will tell you that Mr Utibe's contribution makes w whole lot of sense. Printing business is a very viable business capable of creating employment for many people (just come to Murg plaza in Area 10 Abuja to see for yourself).

But the fact is that in the hands of a newbie, a printing business will fail. That is my take, knowing how Nigerians are more adept at copying ideas and other people's businesses than taking the pains to do a proper business research.

Godspikin: Any past winner should please help in the following areas where I have some challenges.

1. The total capital requirement (14.456m: total investment + 1 month operating cost) far surpases the maximum amount Youwin grants (10m), so I requested for 9.9m and indicated that I will spend 260k, family m friends (1.65m) and raise the remaining 2.56m from the bank. Is this a wise decision? What's ur opinion? Kindly note that I did this because I felt reducing the amount to fit in to the Youwin requirements does not represent the reality of d bizness n bliv it may backfire in d next stage. Pls advice.

2. Describe the benefit your proposed staff will bring to d business... Including expertise, TRACK RECORD IN THE INDUSTRY... I don't know how best to go about answering this, any help?

3. What are your expected sales within the next 12months... For a business that is just starting a lot of factors could affect sales, is it wise to just use the projections of output per month without putting into consideration that output may not automatically translate to sales in reality... any advice.

Please I will really appreciate critical but positive contributions, especially from past winners.
Someone I know requested for N10m, but said she will bring a certain amount from her own money. Guess what?

She was given the sum of N10m minus the amount she said she will contribute. Nuff said.

Patiladwonder: The question talks about minimum equipment and not equipments. That means, you are allowed to talk about one singular major equipment you either need to start or expand.

The following question says you describe this equipment and not equipments. So you are meant to describe just 1(one) equipment. Ensure you know the costs of your equipment and put it there or you research on the cost of the equipment.

Even though the equipment is more than the amount you requested from YouWiN, Youwin cannot give you more than 10 million. There is a space in stage2 business plan where you will discuss where you will get the remaining money. I will advise that you pick a cost that's within 10 million.
The word "equipment" can be used as singular and plural. I don't even know that there is a word like "equipments" (I stand to be corrected though).

Your greed got the better of you. The Nigerian Customs has warned people severally not to patronize these "bargain" cars. How can you buy a car with a market value of N4m for N100,000?

The warnings have been on their website and also on Nairaland. Always do your due diligence and if something is too good to be true, it usually is. Besides, on OLX you are supposed to meet the seller of any product physically.
BusinessRe: Cassava Sellers And Buyers, Lets Meet Here by stagger: 2:03pm On Dec 06, 2013
saliubello: Maybe I spoil your market. Cassava farmers beware of lofty calculations. I know a town about 25minutes drive from Abeokuta. Their main produce is cassava, and I know how the yields & prices flunctuates. I know 2 companies in Ogun state, one extracts ethanol (AGBARA-IGBESA) while the other is a vendor company (OSOSA) to Flour Mills of Nigeria. The 3rd company makes glucose but its wound-up now. If you are close to any of this locations, go for it. My advice watch out for internet based consultants with no fields, they can be misleading.
No one's market is spoilt. I will give you some facts.

a) The price of gari is used as a gauge of availability and pricing of cassava. Prices of gari and cassava in Nigeria have a cyclical rhythm, being highest in the months from December to May, and prices tending to fall as from June to November. When prices are high, farmers increase production, which invariably leads to a glut in the market and a fall in prices. The easier harvesting in the rainy season when the soil is wet adds to the price drop in the rainy season. When prices fall, farmers will simply leave the tubers in the ground, and then a time comes when the demand outstrips supply, leading to higher prices.

b) 80% of cassava production in Nigeria is in the hands of subsistence farmers. This makes it very difficult for large companies to assemble enough cassava to process within the 72-hour window between harvest and decay of tubers.

c) There are several dynamics that make it impossible for those who process cassava into starch and glucose to beat countries like Thailand in the international market. The cost of production is so high that by the time products like ethanol, starch and glucose syrup leave Nigeria, the selling cost is way above the international market price.

I will end this by attaching a study on On-farm Production Costs of Ethanol done by 2 Nigerian scientists. That will help you explain why the factory you mentioned had to close its doors. No LARGE-SCALE processing plant will breakeven buying cassava from farmers (as opposed to cultivating their farms).

This is why mechanization is important. The biggest issue in the cassava market in Nigeria is having to reverse the ratio of cassava farming methods in favour of mechanized farming. It is key!
BusinessRe: Cassava Sellers And Buyers, Lets Meet Here by stagger: 1:15pm On Dec 06, 2013
I think that in order for cassava farmers to move forward with mechanization, forming cooperatives is the way forward. You can hardly receive loans or grants as an individual farmer, unless you are an OBJ or the Yar'Adua. Even Dangote is into farming. I know he has in excess of 5,000 hectares of pineapples planted that serves as feed stock for his Dansa pineapple product.

By the way, do we know that OBJ Farms is among the top 4 cassava starch producers in Nigeria?

kingagropro1: TME 419 specie can give you 30tons /ha.
Very correct. And it is also resistant to the very aggressive Ugandan variant of the cassava mosiac virus. In fact, no Nigerian cassava farmer should ignore the TME 419 variety.
BusinessRe: Cassava Sellers And Buyers, Lets Meet Here by stagger: 10:52am On Dec 06, 2013
soladel: Cultivating Cassava commercially is not just what you can get information through browsing, orally or through a medium like this, you need to be close to the expert. Even if you read a manual, farming sometimes don't go the way one plans it.
Cassava is a crop is perishable and post harvest is very costly.
Now, Industries that needed it are many but few of them are ready to bear the cost of transportation and other logistics.
I am on a project In IITA Ibadan called Cassava Value chain, where we try to inform the farmer what to do and steps to take to make money from cassava cultivation.
Different things has to be considered, 1. the land, 2. the material to plant, 3. weed control, 4. time of planting, 5. Spacing of planting, 6. Marketing of the product, etc.
I can tell you guys, all things being equal, one can get up to 50-60 tons per Ha. I got that in Shonga, Kwara state with Mr. Graham Hatty, i still have my farm there, i have close to 60 Ha now, ready for harvesting by next year april.
Another thing is that, we need to change from our normal agriculture practice (manual) to fully mechanised farming from land preparation, planting, weed control, harvesting and post harvesting. In this we can make enough money in selling the product to those who need them here in nigeria not to talk of abroad. you can get me on adelekesola@gmail.com. Thanks.
I forget to mention, the specie of cassava also determine your output, I have many specie on the farm courtesy IITA, Tme 98/0581, Tme 419, Tme 289, Tme 2324 etc.
On point, but how many farmers can afford the tools I saw in this YouTube video?

I give them ripe Carica papaya(pawpaw). Those are what I use to feed my over 30 snails of 4-5 different breeds.
I choose not to bamboozzle you with all the scientific names anymore, pls pardon me! Its just to drive home my points that its actually my line and my passion! I am not an authority on anything, We are all learning! There are many things I still don't know in this my line and it may be you( my reader now) that will teach me. So please don't hesistate to share your knowledge( that you know is viable o not what you heared from someone, please) for example, someone said pigs eat cassava peels and a pig farmer went to feed his pigs with cassava peels the other day, he was surprised when he got back that the pigs are dead! (That is 'owo wogbo ' monney enter bush I.e major loss) not knowing that it is dried cassava peels that pigs likes eating. I have tried it with mine and it worked! Cassava has high HCN (hydro cyanide or hydro cyanic acid) that is why garri is allowed to ferment before frying or "Epo pupa" (palm / Red oil ) is used when frying in some places.
HAHAHAHA! Ignorance is terrible. How can he feed his pigs with the peels where the hydrocyanic acid is fully concentrated? HAHAHAHHA!
