Having praised the bravery of Ukrainian troops, Zelensky switches to Russian and issues a direct appeal to Vladimir Putin, calling on him to enter negotiations with his government.

"I would like to address the president of the Russian Federation once again," Zelensky says.

"Fighting is ongoing across all of Ukraine's territory. Let's sit down at the negotiating table to stop the killing of people."

Foreign AffairsRe: Hundreds Arrested As Russians Protest Invasion Of Ukraine (Pictures) by wealthtrak: 3:34pm On Feb 25, 2022
justflow1:
For the US and NATO, there's little appetite to engage  Russia directly. Ukraine is not part of NATO. My economic classes thought me that, in regional blocs and treaty; members of the blocs are highly prohibited from directly involving themselves in economic ties with non-members. And I believe same applies in a military treaty scenario.

US, NATO and the Ukrainian allies are currently dealing with the situation smartly; running their cost-benefit analysis religiously. Sanction packages on the Russian economy and technology are enough to persuade putin (maybe not in the short run), and if it doesn't, then, watch out for their defeat thereafter.
Massive sanctions on Russian businesses, banks, HNIs; blockage of access to the world's capital market, payments systems; and cutting edge techs needed to mordernize their military,  space program, and economy are morally enough. Also, sanctions on their ability to transact in USD, Sterlings, Euro and Yen makes the entire sanctions more complicated and devastating for Russia.

To help Ukraine directly in a war footing scenario is to put people and economy at risk. As per economy, the U.S of A is around 14 times bigger than Russia. Russia would only struggle to trail smaller countries like the UK. Hence, a direct war footing approach should be the last resort for the U.S

I mean, is there a country that wants to underestimate the impact of economic sanctions, especially when the sanctions are coming from regional blocs and the real "owners" of the world's economy.

Germany had their own piece of the cake in the 1920's when they were indicted of promulgating the WWI, they paid reparations that ran into trillions ( in today's German marks). They got hit by an unprecedented hyperinflation; where their currency was so useless that a german needs currencies filled in a truck to purchase a loaf of bread. Germans couldn't afford to paint their house, they started using money as wallpapers. Their children couldn't afford a toy, they used their money to construct kites. There were cases where people offloaded money from a wheelbarrow, and stole the wheelbarrow alone. Intriguingly, In 1914, the exchange rate of the German mark to the American dollar was about 4.2 to one. Nine years later, it was 4.2 trillion to one. Germany didn't foresee this eventuality.

I end in the words of Umberto eco "Not long ago, if you wanted to seize political power in a country you had merely to control the army and the police. Today it is only in the most backward countries that fascist generals, in carrying out a coup d'état, still use tanks" the whole scene changes when it becomes an economic warfare.

I loaded it with crazy songs, starting with Terry G's free madness, charged the battery full and kept it on standby.

The next program, I placed the phone on our bathroom window that's just a few steps away from their alter and fired on long before they started coming.

Half way into my songs, someone tapped on our door, guess who? The pastor.

He came to complain that the music was a distraction and told me to lower the volume. I told him that they disturb us anytime they sing and shout to the Lord in the night.

BusinessRe: Frauds In Banks And Banks In Fraud by wealthtrak: 8:06am On Feb 25, 2022
Omooba77:
Fraud is a daily recurring word in every daily newspaper in Nigeria. A Nigerian newspaper seems incomplete without a report on fraud or fraudulent activity in public or private enterprises. It is so common that, without deliberate monitoring, you may not even notice you have just read about it. Thus, it has become a way of life. I was in search of another word to go with ‘bank’ in the title of this piece to attract attention but could not find a more appropriate word. Attaching fraud to banks might attract the required attention, but banks themselves are closely knit with fraud, given what havoc they have rendered on some individuals or enterprises. I, therefore, thought that if I doubled the two words – fraud and bank – it might just be more appealing to readers.

Fraud does not offend the sensibilities of many Nigerians anymore because it is like a national toga and Nigerian banks are part of the environment. To behave differently is to be ‘un-Nigerian.’ Or, how do you explain billions of naira spent on the refineries’ repairs yearly, including 2021 without positive results and nobody has been sent to jail or being probed on how such funds did go into the corruption drain pipe? How does the Federal Government of this country insist arrogantly on spending N3 trillion on fuel subsidy in 2022, even when there are options to look at how domestic production of fuel could save the country more than half of the amount; just because some people feel they must spend or benefit from spending the money? To expect stakeholders in the Nigerian banks to behave differently is to treat them as the saints that they should be but are not.

Bad debt and fraud in banks have always been part of the banking problems and have both grounded some banks globally. Actually, the link between bad debt and fraud is thin. Many underhand businesses that already compromise repayment of loans would have taken place before loans deals were concluded. That is why banks are reluctant to publish the names of debtors, and when published, nothing concrete happens in terms of settling the debt. Of course, non-payment of debt is a fraudulent act in itself but it was not so treated in the ongoing discussions by the House of Representatives.

The Bank Employee etc (Declaration of Assets) Act, Cap. B1, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, had prescribed a 10-year jail term in addition to forfeiture of assets for bank staff found to be involved in fraud. The House of Representatives is now recommending that the jail term be increased to 20 years in addition to forfeiture of assets. The bill has passed the second reading. The area of interest here is Section 7(2) of the Act, which states inter alia ‘Any employee guilty of an offence under the section shall, on conviction, be sentenced to imprisonment for twenty years and shall, in addition, forfeit the excess asset or its equivalent in money to the Federal Government.” Honourable Francis Waive (Ughelli North/South/Udu), who led the debate on the bill acknowledged the challenges posed by internet fraud, including yahoo boys’ activities, and their effects on banking. He hoped that the amendment will not only help improve the data bank of the banks but, importantly, serve as a deterrent to other staff and reduce the surge in nefarious activities. There is supposed to be simultaneous punishment for customers too.

It is no news that bank staff commit fraud and do go to jail. Since the introduction of the Act, now being amended, in 2004, many bank staff have gone to jail on the basis of it, and that ought to have deterred other ones, but not so. Hence the amendment. Will this stop fraud in banks? It will not. We have to investigate what is fueling the action and tackle the root headlong with a view to reducing, if we cannot eliminate, fraud. We need to understand that fraud in banks is also fueled by banks engaging in fraudulent acts against its staff and customers.

Most young staff we see in the banking hall are casual staff. These young ones grow with the bank over time and are conscious of the fact that they can be thrown out of the banking business anytime and without adequate compensation. Many of these youths, who have put in over ten years, were from time to time sacked or relieved of their jobs unceremoniously. This has been the trend of events over the last 20 years. The issue of the dedication of staff is very important for the growth of the enterprise they work for. Dedication itself is hinged on a number of factors, including job security and staff welfare.

Casual staff have no job security and they would be concerned about how to secure themselves against an uncertain future. In a bank setting, where their daily task is dealing with funds, the first idea is how to secure their future with such funds. This is a major source of increasing fraudulent activities in the banks. The banking management has effectively discouraged the activities of labour unions in the banking system so that staff would have no voice to fight for their rights and can be treated in a use-and-dump manner. The House of Representatives will have to look into this unholy attitude of worker casualisation to protect the workers, the banks and the customers.

The fraudulent activities of the banks towards customers also need attention just as customers fraudulent acts on the banking system. The House will have to investigate why banks should be imposing charges on customers on virtually all transactions. The banks are aware that their services on e-transactions are not near perfect but willfully play games with customers. Hitherto and ordinarily, customers were allowed to withdraw up to N20,000 from the ATM machines owned by other banks but most of them now allow withdrawals of only N10,000 so that the customer can get to the mandatory three withdrawals from the other machine and start paying penalty, which is likely to be paid for the rest of the month because of inefficient internet provision or service provider.

One of the banks I use regularly always deduct charges for the transfer of funds to another person’s account with the same bank such that I have to suspend using it as my main business account. Sometimes a bank would deduct card maintenance charges, even when you did not use the account for a month. Some other times, you lose your card in the ATM machine or there are multiple deductions, either may take you days to recover, if you do not have to eventually forgo your money. You can also imagine receiving embarrassingly smelly money from the ATM, yet one finds crisp notes with currency hawkers at parties! Some banks would even send you birthday wishes on wrong dates for whatever reason you may never know.

What is the House of Representatives take on all those big men, who have been found defrauding banks, causing huge bad debts that do put some banks in distress? Such people brought down the defunct National Bank, like many other banks in that category, in the 1990s. Some names were published but we never knew what punishment they faced except that some of them contested elections in later years and won. Some names have been published recently and nothing seems to be happening beyond the publication of the names. I suspect that they are going to contest the next elections and win. So, the compromise to defraud is not just coming from within the banking system but also from outside.

Why would such acts not embolden a young man or woman, who has worked with good qualifications in a bank for over 10 years as casual labour, unsure of when he or she will be thrown into the job market, to take advantage of the lapses to engage in fraud. While the House is trying to prevent fraud in banks, it should also prevent banks from engaging in fraudulent practices. The banks are supposed to be embodiments of truth, trust and reliability. The bankers have to search themselves for restitution; the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria has the onerous task of cleansing this odious table while the Central Bank of Nigeria should return to central banking instead of the present retail banking and launching cassava or rice pyramid.

Foreign AffairsRe: Address By The President Of The Russian Federation – February 24, 2022 by wealthtrak: 11:04pm On Feb 24, 2022
scully95:
President of Russia Vladimir Putin:

Citizens of Russia, friends,

I consider it necessary today to speak again about the tragic events in Donbass and the key aspects of ensuring the security of Russia.

I will begin with what I said in my address on February 21, 2022. I spoke about our biggest concerns and worries, and about the fundamental threats which irresponsible Western politicians created for Russia consistently, rudely and unceremoniously from year to year. I am referring to the eastward expansion of NATO, which is moving its military infrastructure ever closer to the Russian border.

It is a fact that over the past 30 years we have been patiently trying to come to an agreement with the leading NATO countries regarding the principles of equal and indivisible security in Europe. In response to our proposals, we invariably faced either cynical deception and lies or attempts at pressure and blackmail, while the North Atlantic alliance continued to expand despite our protests and concerns. Its military machine is moving and, as I said, is approaching our very border.

Why is this happening? Where did this insolent manner of talking down from the height of their exceptionalism, infallibility and all-permissiveness come from? What is the explanation for this contemptuous and disdainful attitude to our interests and absolutely legitimate demands?

The answer is simple. Everything is clear and obvious. In the late 1980s, the Soviet Union grew weaker and subsequently broke apart. That experience should serve as a good lesson for us, because it has shown us that the paralysis of power and will is the first step towards complete degradation and oblivion. We lost confidence for only one moment, but it was enough to disrupt the balance of forces in the world.

As a result, the old treaties and agreements are no longer effective. Entreaties and requests do not help. Anything that does not suit the dominant state, the powers that be, is denounced as archaic, obsolete and useless. At the same time, everything it regards as useful is presented as the ultimate truth and forced on others regardless of the cost, abusively and by any means available. Those who refuse to comply are subjected to strong-arm tactics.

What I am saying now does not concerns only Russia, and Russia is not the only country that is worried about this. This has to do with the entire system of international relations, and sometimes even US allies. The collapse of the Soviet Union led to a redivision of the world, and the norms of international law that developed by that time – and the most important of them, the fundamental norms that were adopted following WWII and largely formalised its outcome – came in the way of those who declared themselves the winners of the Cold War.

Of course, practice, international relations and the rules regulating them had to take into account the changes that took place in the world and in the balance of forces. However, this should have been done professionally, smoothly, patiently, and with due regard and respect for the interests of all states and one’s own responsibility. Instead, we saw a state of euphoria created by the feeling of absolute superiority, a kind of modern absolutism, coupled with the low cultural standards and arrogance of those who formulated and pushed through decisions that suited only themselves. The situation took a different turn.

There are many examples of this. First a bloody military operation was waged against Belgrade, without the UN Security Council’s sanction but with combat aircraft and missiles used in the heart of Europe. The bombing of peaceful cities and vital infrastructure went on for several weeks. I have to recall these facts, because some Western colleagues prefer to forget them, and when we mentioned the event, they prefer to avoid speaking about international law, instead emphasising the circumstances which they interpret as they think necessary.

Then came the turn of Iraq, Libya and Syria. The illegal use of military power against Libya and the distortion of all the UN Security Council decisions on Libya ruined the state, created a huge seat of international terrorism, and pushed the country towards a humanitarian catastrophe, into the vortex of a civil war, which has continued there for years. The tragedy, which was created for hundreds of thousands and even millions of people not only in Libya but in the whole region, has led to a large-scale exodus from the Middle East and North Africa to Europe.

A similar fate was also prepared for Syria. The combat operations conducted by the Western coalition in that country without the Syrian government’s approval or UN Security Council’s sanction can only be defined as aggression and intervention.

But the example that stands apart from the above events is, of course, the invasion of Iraq without any legal grounds. They used the pretext of allegedly reliable information available in the United States about the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. To prove that allegation, the US Secretary of State held up a vial with white power, publicly, for the whole world to see, assuring the international community that it was a chemical warfare agent created in Iraq. It later turned out that all of that was a fake and a sham, and that Iraq did not have any chemical weapons. Incredible and shocking but true. We witnessed lies made at the highest state level and voiced from the high UN rostrum. As a result we see a tremendous loss in human life, damage, destruction, and a colossal upsurge of terrorism.

Overall, it appears that nearly everywhere, in many regions of the world where the United States brought its law and order, this created bloody, non-healing wounds and the curse of international terrorism and extremism. I have only mentioned the most glaring but far from only examples of disregard for international law.

This array includes promises not to expand NATO eastwards even by an inch. To reiterate: they have deceived us, or, to put it simply, they have played us. Sure, one often hears that politics is a dirty business. It could be, but it shouldn’t be as dirty as it is now, not to such an extent. This type of con-artist behaviour is contrary not only to the principles of international relations but also and above all to the generally accepted norms of morality and ethics. Where is justice and truth here? Just lies and hypocrisy all around.

Incidentally, US politicians, political scientists and journalists write and say that a veritable “empire of lies” has been created inside the United States in recent years. It is hard to disagree with this – it is really so. But one should not be modest about it: the United States is still a great country and a system-forming power. All its satellites not only humbly and obediently say yes to and parrot it at the slightest pretext but also imitate its behaviour and enthusiastically accept the rules it is offering them. Therefore, one can say with good reason and confidence that the whole so-called Western bloc formed by the United States in its own image and likeness is, in its entirety, the very same “empire of lies.”

As for our country, after the disintegration of the USSR, given the entire unprecedented openness of the new, modern Russia, its readiness to work honestly with the United States and other Western partners, and its practically unilateral disarmament, they immediately tried to put the final squeeze on us, finish us off, and utterly destroy us. This is how it was in the 1990s and the early 2000s, when the so-called collective West was actively supporting separatism and gangs of mercenaries in southern Russia. What victims, what losses we had to sustain and what trials we had to go through at that time before we broke the back of international terrorism in the Caucasus! We remember this and will never forget.

Properly speaking, the attempts to use us in their own interests never ceased until quite recently: they sought to destroy our traditional values and force on us their false values that would erode us, our people from within, the attitudes they have been aggressively imposing on their countries, attitudes that are directly leading to degradation and degeneration, because they are contrary to human nature. This is not going to happen. No one has ever succeeded in doing this, nor will they succeed now.

Despite all that, in December 2021, we made yet another attempt to reach agreement with the United States and its allies on the principles of European security and NATO’s non-expansion. Our efforts were in vain. The United States has not changed its position. It does not believe it necessary to agree with Russia on a matter that is critical for us. The United States is pursuing its own objectives, while neglecting our interests.

Of course, this situation begs a question: what next, what are we to expect? If history is any guide, we know that in 1940 and early 1941 the Soviet Union went to great lengths to prevent war or at least delay its outbreak. To this end, the USSR sought not to provoke the potential aggressor until the very end by refraining or postponing the most urgent and obvious preparations it had to make to defend itself from an imminent attack. When it finally acted, it was too late.
Today in history.

Putin made some valid points in

Foreign AffairsRe: Roman Abramovich Barred From UK, Risks Losing Chelsea Ownership by wealthtrak: 10:33pm On Feb 24, 2022
Lorddominic:
The billionaire owner of Chelsea Football Club, Roman Abramovich, has been barred from living in the United Kingdom, local media reports.

This followed a revelation by Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, that he’s one of the 35 oligarchs who are enablers of President Vladimir Putin.

According to reports, immigration officials are “under clear instruction to work towards ensuring Mr Abramovich cannot base himself in the UK” despite owning a £125million mansion near Kensington Palace.

According to DailyMail, Abramovic who denies he is close to the Kremlin or has done anything that would merit sanctions being imposed against him has not been seen at the club for months.

Having secured Israeli citizenship in 2018, allowing him to enter Britain for up to six months, Abramovic Israeli passport last October to make a short trip to London.

The Sun, quoting a senior source, reported that any attempt by the oligarch to apply for a permanent visa would “almost certainly be rejected”.

Meanwhile, Abramovic could be stripped of his ownership of World Champions, Chelsea Football Club.

This comes as Labour Minister of Parliament, Chris Bryant, called for the seizure of his assets as part of sanctions against Russia.

The MP for the Rhondda says Abramovich, “admitted in court proceedings that he paid for political influence’ and has ‘links to the Russian state and his public association with corrupt activity.”

Bryant told the House of Commons, via The Sun: “Following some of the reports in The Sun and other newspapers today.

“I’ve got hold of a leaked document from 2019 from the Home Office, which says, in relation to Mr Abramovich.

“As part of HMGs Russia strategy, aimed at targeting illicit finance and malign activity, Abramovich remains of interest to HMG due to his links to the Russian state and his public association with corrupt activity and practices.

“An example of this is Abramovich admitting in court proceedings that he paid for political influence.

“Therefore HMG is focused on ensuring individuals linked to illicit finance and malign activity are unable to base themselves in the UK and will use the relevant tools at its disposal including immigration powers to prevent this.

“That’s nearly three years ago, and yet remarkably little has been done in relation Surely Mr Abramovich should no longer be able to own a football club in this country?

“Surely we should be looking at seizing some of his assets, including his 152 million pound home? And making sure that other people who’ve had tier one visas like this are not engaged in malign activity in the UK.”

Are you surprised?

We were far more productive in 1980 than we are today

In 1980 the key reasons for economic growth were are as follows:

1) We were a net exporter of refined petroleum products. Today we import all our refined petroleum products.

2) We rode in locally assembled cars, buses and trucks. Peugeot cars in Kaduna and Volkswagen cars in Lagos.

Leyland in Ibadan and ANAMCO in Enugu produced our buses and trucks.

Steyr at Bauchi producing our Agricultural tractors.

And it was not just Assembly, we were producing many of the components.

Vono products in Lagos producing the seats.

Exide in Ibadan producing the batteries, not just for Nigeria but for the entire West Africa.

Isoglass and TSG in Ibadan producing the windshields.

Ferodo in Ibadan producing the brake pads and discs

Tyres produced by Dunlop in Lagos and Mitchelin in Portharcourt.

And I mean tyres produced from rubber plantations located in Ogun and Rivers State.

3) We were listening to Radio and watching television sets assembled in Ibadan by Sanyo.

4) We were using refrigerators, freezers and Airconditioners produced by Thermocool and Debo.

5) We were putting on clothes produced from the UNTL textile mills in Kaduna and Chellarams in Lagos.

Not from imported cotton but from cotton grown in Nigeria.

6) Our water was running through pipes produced by Kwalipipe in Kano and Duraplast in Lagos .

7) Our toilets were fitted with WC produced at Kano and Abeokuta.

cool We were cooking with LPG gas stored inside gas cylinders produced at the NGC factory in Ibadan.

9) Our electricity was flowing through cables produced by the Nigerian Wire and Cable, Ibadan, NOCACO in Kaduna and Kablemetal in Lagos and Portharcourt.

10) We had Bata and Lennards producing the shoes we were putting on

Not from imported leather but from locally tanned leather at Kaduna.

11) We were mainly flying our airways, (the Nigeria Airways), to most places in the world.

The Airways was about the biggest in Africa at that time.

12) Most of the food we ate were grown or produced in Nigeria.

We were producing all of the above and more in 1980

Today, we import almost everything.
Isn't that alarming?

There lies the source of the terrible exchange rate we are experiencing today and everyone reading this has a critical role to play in reversing this very UGLY trend.

We have been talking about these problems and more for ages.

It is not enough for us to complain about the exchange rate or point out what others are not doing or are failing to do, the key question is what are we producing or what role the so called Leaders / Politicians of today are playing ?

This beautifully explains the Nigerian circumstance.

Hmmn!

I believe he’s worth more than that. Most of his boys who are the Present Super Rich Russian Oligarchs are stupendously wealthy. They all keep their wealth on a low. Remember Russia is a very rich oil and gas nation.
You do have a great point here bruv... Enough monopoly and kick backs. Those Russian Oligarchs have their hands in several juicy industries in Russia and globally with allegations of corruption trailing some of them. SMH.

Well said. Why do they hate America? That is yet to be understood by a rookie like me.
Hi @Pocohantas.
Let me school you here a bit. wink

I love America though, but American governments of the past too are NOT blameless when it comes to sponsoring coups and installing their own stooges from decades back. America has been involved in destabilising parts of the world especially during the years of the Cold-War with the defunct USSR (Russia and other communist republics).

Read up more in the best-seller book entitled: "The Rogue State"
by William Blum, a respected
American citizen, who wrote
about how American government double standards was fuelling hatred towards American citizens worldwide.

Hope that helps to understand
some of these global geo-political
intrigues.

Nigerians living in Ukraine cried out through social media after Russia attacked Ukrainian cities early on Thursday morning.
They claimed the Nigerian embassy in Ukraine had earlier given them assurances to be calm that nothing was going to happen.

On the contrary, they started hearing explosions and gunshots today and they no longer feel safe.

They were able to make it to the train station but they are now stranded as many people are attempting to leave the city at once.
LMAO... grin grin The
Yoruba guy that spoke last
with an accent cracked me up when he kept looking up into the sky
and said the airport has already
been destroyed and the train station where he and the other
Nigerian students were speaking
from could be bombed anytime!

The Nigerian survivor spirit will keep you guys and the over 4000
Nigerians in Ukraine safe.

Evacuations will soon take place
by AirPeace and others from this weekend... Max next week.

What is his net worth?

As a notoriously secretive person, Putin's official net worth remains unknown.

Former Hermitage Capital Management CEO Bill Browder, an opponent of Putin, estimated the Russian leader’s net worth at $200billion.

A former Kremlin adviser Stanislav Belkovsky claimed that Putin was worth at least $40 billion in 2007.

RomanceRe: What "Table" Means To Men. by wealthtrak: 4:45pm On Feb 24, 2022

No real man survives or wants financial income from a woman. For me, when a man says what do you bring to the table, he means what female qualities do you have. Are you a supportive woman, are you a home maker? are you a woman that will give a man peace, are you capable of having children and raising them properly, are you the kind of woman that will help a man acheive his potential or the type that will drag aman down with drama? are you the kind of woman that a man is proud to call his wife etc etc

Yes there may be times when things are tough and a wife may need to support her husband financially but it is a "loan" so to speak. No man enters a relationship looking for financial support from a woman...at least no real man expects to live of a woman!!!
Well said!

Great.
Apart from John Edward the popular American who hears and speaks to souls that has passed on. I don't really know how to get more good info about this quest.
Can you share any of those movies and book names with me.
Hello @Divoc19... sure. smiley
Right off the bat, here are just a
few specifics:

The book that I first read which got me exposed to "NDEs" in the early 1980s was "Life After Life" by Raymond Moody which is a 1975 best-seller. It has sold millions of copies till date. The printed versions of the book can be got on Amazon. Over half of the world's
population believes in the trans-migration of Soul, karma and
reincarnation of some sort.
(The medieval-era concept of eternal damnation via hellfire or some "lake of sulphur, fire and
brimstone" is just what it is - PURE
fiction used by the clergy of the
orthodox religions to scare and
control their grip on the masses).

Second, I've watched Discovery
Channel documentaries on
Near-Death Experiences (NDEs)
and also on YouTube! Fantastic stuff... which sort of removes the
fear of passing on.

So search YouTube by typing: "NDE documentaries" and you'll get some videos lasting for over 50 minutes or over 1 hour.

You can also search for Raymond Moody Near-death experience documentaries on YTube which you may be able to download on your computer for free.

By the way Divoc, tell me when and how did you develop keen interest in this subject matter?

Hope I simplified things for you here. Talk to you later. smiley
