Culture › Re: The Hardest of the 3 Major Language to Learn by Yujin(m): 1:53pm On Nov 09, 2012
Jah Man: I do not understand where you and Chinenye are getting your confusion from.
Like any other major language, there is what we call 'central Igbo' which is what is taught in Igbo Language in colleges. It is an amalgam of different local dialects in the geographical entity called Igboland. It is also expected that every Igbo indigene that has average education understands that.
Can Chinenye explain to me what is meant by 'artificial'?
Ehihie is not the same as evening odumchi.Ehihie(central Igbo) is rather afternoon.
Evening is 'anyasi' or 'mgbede'(central igbo), abani or abali(central igbo)=night.ututu(central igbo)=morning.
I have tried as much as possible to understand most local dialects in igboland excpet the 'okpoto' language in Ebonyi state which is extremely difficult. If you listen to those hawkers on 3rd mainland bridge, you may not know they are discussing in igbo.I know that because I lived around that area for 2 years.
Your observation and explanation is correct.
Morning= Ututu, Afternoon= Ehihe(Efife), Evening= Mgbede and Night= Abali(abani) or Anyasi. Methink it is Igbo. However, Igbo is not that difficult to learn. Just learn the one (central Igbo) spoken in any commercial place among Igbos. Wherever you go in Igboland, somebody must understand you. As per the dialects, once you understand central Igbo, addition and subtraction of words in the sentences is mostly what you need to fairly understand them.

Ex. Gov Onoja hasn't said what others have not been saying i.e Elimination of the corrupt and embezzling elites. However, you must understand why he reiterated his soft support for Boko haram. It is simply because of the location(Minna) and the crop of people he is dealing with there. You don't expect him to condemn them there for the sake of his life and family.
Boko haram up till now have no case: they, their sponsors and sympathizers are bloody demons. Did Yusuf- their leader not spearhead the killing of innocent people before the security forces descended on him? Its just like the Al Qaeda asking for compensation after the Seals brutally finished Osama. We are waiting for the compensation to commence.

Kei144: I joined this thread rather late. I must say that what Alh Hareem posted on page 1 is a food for thought for Igbos. It is very unfortunate that with all that have happened to Igbos in Nigeria, they don't seem to ever learn. What Alh Hareem posted is an accurate description of what Nigerians think about Igbo acquisition of properties in other parts of Nigeria. Even the late Enahoro called Igbos "land grabbers". Igbos be wise!

Certainly you are right. Igbos have a lot to learn from their experiences over time. Alj harem has a point. If your genuine willingness to develop another man's land would be misconstrued for land grabbing, then refrain from such. This is the nigerian mindset- Jealousy. Assuming Igbos build only buildings(outside their own regions) with the similitude of those in the brown city- Ibadan, I don't think there would be jealousy. Ojukwu already told the Igbos the truth: invest heavily in the east not just building beautiful residential buildings. May be the Igbos would be beaten twice before they learn.
Politics › Re: Why US Army Is Recruiting Hausa, Igbo by Yujin(m): 3:14pm On Nov 03, 2012
cap28: First of all the United States is one of the most divided and racist nations in the western world and it creates the conditions that lead many poor blacks and hispanics in that country to get drafted into their military, if you live in the american ghettoes surrounded by violence, destitution, drug dealers and prostitution with no hope of ever getting out of it due to the entrenched institutionalised racism that permeates every layer of american society ie the schools, the employment and judicial systems etc joing the US army starts to look like a very attractive option indeed even if you might not live to come back to tell your story.

Also just as black americans and hispanics join the army in order to get away from poverty in their community created by the us govt that is the same way nigerians run away from nigeria to get away from the poverty created by the us owned IMF and world bank in nigeria- therefore you need to recognise that this US that you idolise is the architect of the suffering of many nigerians just as it is for black americans.

with regard to the US's role in the nigeria /biafra civil war - yes they fought on the side of their ally - Britain who armed, funded and trained their northern puppets to prevent the secession of biafra but why did the americans chose to side with a group of murderers who had already carried out unprovoked attacks against thousands of igbos in the north, i thought america beleives in freedom and democracy - why didnt they come to the aid of the persecuted biafrans ? could it be because they stood to gain more by siding with their british allies because of the stake they had in the oil region which was under the control of britain?

You see one thing you have failed to understand is that these americans and europeans do not see us as human beings they only see our resources, america joined forces with britain because it was in their interest to keep oil rich niger delta under the control of the nigerian northern oligarcy (aka nigeria) because that is the only way they would have full control over those resources, it had nothign to do with them beleiving in the unity of the nigerian people - they couldnt care less about nigeria or its people - all they wanted was for the oil to be under the control of the leaders that were originally chosen by britain.

if you still do not beleive what ive said about the role america played during the nigerian civil war try reading Henry Kissinger's memoirs (former national security adviser under Nixon) read the chapter about how Kissinger received daily updates on the number of igbo children that were dying of starvation as a result of the economic blockade imposed on biafra following instructions from britain .

read about how Kissinger chose to do nothing in the face of all of this tragedy - you know why? BECAUSE IT WAS NOT IN THE INTEREST OF THE UNITED STATES TO GO AGAINST BRITAIN'S POSTION - you better wake up and understand that we black people are nothign more than pawns in their hands they do not care about us and never will.

with regard to the posters comment about the hurricane im inclined to agree - when you commit so much evil against innocent people in this world brace yourself for your own punishment because it will be so deadly that people around you will begin to wonder what you did to invoke such fury from the gods.
Well my friend, I couldn't help but agree with you on the recruitment not being for benefit of those to be recruited. Since Nigeria has failed to address her fundamental issues of partiality, favouritism and injustice, then WE ALL show suffer the consequences. My advise is that they should join en masse so that when the chips come to fore everyone should feel the pain.

VolvoS60: There is a lot deeply wrong with us.

A man steals a goat. He is stripped naked, possibly beaten within an inch of his life. If he's lucky he'll live to be charged with theft, spend 15 years in prison awaiting trial and then end up being sentenced to death for armed robbery.

Another man steals the monetary equivalent of 100 trillion goats. He becomes a god and decides the fate of millions of his countrymen because of the high office he is elected to - by the same people who would gladly kill a man because he stole a goat.

We will never, ever make it unless we change the way we think and do things. Never.
May God bless you for saying this.

How do you expect them(nnewi and aro ) to celebrate their respective festivals exactly alike? What makes the two festivals the same is that they are being dedicated to yam and not how they are celebrated. Again mindset like urs is capable of causing havoc among igbos cause you focus more on differences(aro and nnewi, south and north, diversities)etc instead of unity. I seriously doubt ur leadership abilities cause you're too cunny.

We are only talking about recent history , this has happened though out history . War is an adventure and could be a misadventure as it turned out to be for Ojukwu. Would they be talking like this if Ojukwu won the war? Gowon should just ignore these people whining and moaning about what they don't know. If they can't take a defeat gallantly like other lands why did they start the war?. War is not a football game please.
I hope you will not complain WHEN thesame comes your way. The time is near.
Civil wars are different from international wars. Gowon's sincerity in prosecuting the war is glaringly in doubt. Why did he renegade on the Aburi accord? Gowon is indeed unapologetic and as such would deserve whatever befalls him and whosoever shares his views. We are watching.

This is for real. Presently, two friends are seriously angry with me for not dating/having them. They both told me they were in a relationship so my choice of word is not definite. One expressly told me she wants to d'oko even without me ever talking about I loving her. Though, we had been friends gisting a lot about different issues. The other wanted me to profess my love for her by telling me that accepting her gift would prove to her that I love her (we have never talked about love before). I don't use the phrase 'I love you' carelessly even though I might be loving and caring. Offering gifts I can afford and when I feel the other wouldn't abuse it but seldomly request/receive. Honestly, I like them but just as friends. I tried explaining and reassuring them of friendship but it appears they can't settle for 'less'. This made me compose a poem titled: See your smile again. They don't gist with me again except in business matters. Well, I know what I want and nothing can distract me from my search.

The sincerity on the of the nigerian govt is the problem here. See it this way:
Fashola: Constitutional amendment is good but that is not the problem. Even when it is changed if our attitude towards it is not that of whole hearted obedience for the benefit of all, then all our efforts(at changing) would be an exercise in futility.
Obi: The constitution must be changed to reflect equity, fairness and justice if you want OUR constitution to be obeyed e.g 5 states for SE while averagely 6 for other regions thereby losing allocation money worth hundreds of millions in naira meant for development within the SE. Such lopsided arrangement should not be found in the amended constitution(whether regional government or not).
The problem as seen by both men bothers on the sincerity of the FG in ensuring a workable(Obi) and respectable(Fashola) constitution.

CyberG: I think the judges should do justice to this case, so let us see. In my opinion though, let the ibos secede but their will be conditions which will NOT be negotiable:

1. Every ibo man will NOT have access or be allowed to live anywhere else that is current Nigeria, except iboland: Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi. They shall have ONLY 3 months to relocate to iboland. Every ibo who is not will be in contravention of secession agreement, will be liable for grave penalty, treason, become a legitimate target which includes capital punishment with all other options on the table.

2. They will be responsible for their local debts to banks, etc in their new country

3. If Nigeria is NOT good enough now, it WILL NOT be good enough for them later on ANYTHING, so no access to Nigeria's ports, airspace, oil reserves not on iboland, coast, currency, etc.

4. There will be NO economic cooperation with it and ANY parts of Nigeria.

5. Their military will be limited to 50,000 or a number as deemed fit by agreement at secession. Like Iran and other states, they shall not be allowed to make or buy heavy weapons, nuclear technology, etc.

6. There shall be an international body (including representatives from Nigeria) to monitor their compliance to 5 above.

7. Any break to the agreement will be met with BLUNT, BRUTAL FORCE that is not aimed at correction as Nigeria will not waste any efforts or resources bogged down in a stupid war over a land less than the size of Benue State. Also, Nigeria shall maintain permanent military bases, missile shields, and forward operating bases in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Benue and Kogi States. Nigeria will also assemble new military divisions to be stationed off the Atlantic coasts with a fleet of aircraft carriers, battleships. Dive bombers and heavy bombers shall be stationed in all states mentioned above. Drones shall be allowed to roam biafran skies and fly at not less than 18,000 ft.

8. The agreement shall remain in perpetuity and immutable for NOT less than 100,000 years!
Another Hitler in the making. With four likes for this comment, I think a nuclear weapon is necessary. @Cyberg, I hope you know that a wounded lion is more deadly!

You are definitely not an Anambrarian,Enugite nor Anioma. Nri influence extended past the whole Igboland to the Benins and Igalas. The origina deities which these market days names were adopted from still exist till this very days in "Agukwu Nri". Do you even know what is an "nze na ozo" ?? Do you think this is a chieftaincy title ?? 90% of Anambra,Enugu and Anioma towns originated from Nri and Eri.Please do more research before you come back here.you are very ignorant of this things you claim to know.

If you are in disagreement, name those towns. Again, most towns in southern Anambra only had Nri's influence but weren't founded by Nri. Go and check their dialects and you would know. Finally, it is this same pompous attitude that relegated the Ngwas in Abia's politics and Ndi Onicha in Anambra's politics. Pls, watch it.

As a woman, you are too aggressive for my liking; What makes you think you know Igbo culture more than I do ?? I'm telling you this once again; I'm a decendant of the Igbo that invented most of the revered, respected and widely known Igbo cultural practices like "Nze na Ozo","Ikpu Alu","Iwa ji","Ofalla","Igu Aro","Eke,oye, afor na nkwo weekdays,"Igu onwa" and so many other inventions that made the Igbo nation to tower above the rest. How dare you speak of knowledge you know not olf ? Look,Ngwa is not really considered true Igbo, hence, you see ppl like Chinenye badmouthing the Igbo. Tell me one Ngwa tradition that is known accross Igboland...Ngwa has no defined culture! They are just bunch of wanderers that came from Imo areas and settled with out a proper organized traditions...I have an "Ozo" title and its a violation of the "Ozo" principle for an unmarried woman to question my knowledge on Igbo traditions. You see why I said you aren't Igbo ??
Nna, your reasoning is flawed. There is nothing like 'real Igbo'. You said Nri invented Nkwo, Orie, Eke and Afor market days. Were they the ones that introduced it down to the Southern Igbos? It is well known that Nri's influence stopped in Anambra, Anioma and Enugu yet people bore names like Okafor, Okoronkwo etc outside these areas even before the advent of the europeans. Even if Nri was more organize and grand than other Igbo clans, Igbo is by far larger and greater than Nri so stop the unnecessary hyping. Many towns in Anambra were found by the Aros et al, where was Nri then? If non-Nri towns were carved out of Anambra, how big will it be? Well, if as intelligent as you are, you failed to understand that Banjo(a Yoruba) was asked to lead such an important expedition (capturing the capital and chasing the northern soldiers out of it) which would have necessitated a truce, I wonder what will convince you that the Igbos where never against the west. Politics › Re: Achebe's Civil War Memoir's Invitation For Fresh War — CPC by Yujin(m): 12:59pm On Oct 07, 2012
I want to appeal to the Igbos not to generalise on the whole Yoruba nation simply because of Awo and a few others. Yorubas are not your enemies. Among them, some paid the with their lives against the injustice at the time. Would you vent your anger on the children on those that sympathized with your plight? Awo is the culprit and I know that if Soyinka will comment, he will not exonerate him and never will. Let your minds rule over your hearts.
Lets take a look at the big picture. Why was the war fought?
The war was fought to neutralize the only potent region capable of putting a stop to making nigeria an islamic estate of Uthman Ibn Hodio. But why were the hausa/fulanis apparently absent in nigeria's leadership during the war? It was deliberate; it was to cause perpetual hatred amongst the would-be subordinates- the middlebelt(christian north) and the south just as is happening here and now. The brain behind the war is the hausa/fulanis. They regard themselves as 'born to rule' which we all know but the question is 'why'? Simply because they see the present nigeria as a conquered territory already. Do you now understand what that mallam Tanko or so replied Asari Dokubo some months ago. Awolowo didn't want to be part of the war- true but secretly, he wished the Igbos were greatly reduced in number. The hausa/fulanis knew the capability of the Igbos and would have backed out if the West had insisted on neutrality but we all that Awo(the west) gave in by succumbing to the threat that a one mile corridor be given from Offa(kwara which is the north) to Apapa wharf. This was how Western nigeria was conquered and Awo cooperated to actualise his hidden intentions.
We all know that majority of the soldiers that fought on the nigerian side were northern christians and southerners(both Yorubas and minorities). Only few hausa/fulanis fought the war confirming Sardauna's word of 'using the northern christians as cannon fodders'. The hausa/fulanis allowed Gowon to stay a few more years before kicking him out and transferring the capital to Abuja- closer to 'home'. You now understand why Gowon's brother Bukar Sukar Dimka struck and killed Murtala. The game plan became evident to him and the northern christians. You now understand why Orkar's coup and map excised the core north from nigeria. You now understand why some middlebelt youths are apologising to the Igbos. Presently, they are regretting. You now understand why the hausa/fulanis are wiping off the Beroms, Tivs, Sayawas and many others in the middlebelt region. Stick to what Achebe said and leave the Yoruba nation alone.

cjrane: Awo was described as a "Hawk" in Gowon's government by many accounts of the civil war.

He advocated a complete annihilation of Biafra, whereas the Head of State Gowon, actually wanted a situation where he would take measured actions against Biafra to make reconciliation and peaceful co-existence of all the major tribes would be possible after the conflict.

Unfortunately, the voice of people like Awolowo prevailed and became official policy of total war of annihilation against Biafra. This hardened Biafra's resolve to fight to the finish and unfortunately led to colossal loss of lives on both sides. As Gen. Gowon had predicted, that policy of all out war had continued to haunt Nigeria and make reconciliation almost impossible from all the hatred bred by the wicked things that had happened from Awolowo's all out war stance that has ruined our country.
True write-up. I'd prefer to put such: Awo ruined Southern Nigeria and invariably the easiest chance to re-integrate the Igbos. What a shame! However, the Hausa/Fulanis led by Sir Ahmadu Bello destroyed a Nigeria of equality. Does he deserve to be called a hero of nigeria?

Wow, the thread has gotten to its ninth page already.
Well, Awolowo has long gone I believe with regrets. Those who supported/are supporting the role he played during the civil war will reap the commensurate fruits thereof.
Achebe was specific on the person of Awo and not on the entire Yorubas. Those wishing the Igbos to 'just forget about the genocidal war and move on' are dreaming. The bombing of markets, hospitals, schools among other civillian settlements exposed the real intentions of the then nigerian government. We are about 2million+ souls and not animals here. The policies that suceeded the war convinced the remaining Igbos who were in doubt of the evil intentions of their supposed fellow compatriots that they are struggle for survive even if it means denying your people and changing the names of your communities. The damage was too much. Thank God God does not sleep nor slumber.
Without appropriate apologies and compensation(justice), a united nigeria would be impossible.
Those spewing venom on the Yoruba should know that the action of a few evil Yoruba elites is not enough to see the Yorubas as enemies. Do not forget honourable men of conscience like Fajuyi, Pa Adesanya, Soyinka and many others who spoke and acted against injustice when it mattered. I do understand the pains of seeing your fellow southern christians showing no concern over your feelings but you must know that the Yorubas are peaceful unlike the murderous Hausa/Fulanis(the main problem of nigeria). With more innocent blood accumulating in the north courtesy northern muslims(boko haram), it is not yet uhuru until a rematch is played. All avenues shall be employed. He that has ears let him hear.
