RomanceRe: Am I Not In A Toxic Relationship Like This? by 9jaRealist: 9:59am On Jul 09, 2021
ultiabaz36:
Good day my people, please your advise is needed. I am in my 30s and I came into this relationship this year January. I like and I love this babe so much but she’s always demanding financially despite being a working class and I am only surviving on 45k job here in lagos. I have target and ambition for my life and everything is placed on this my job. So, I have a proportion of my income to be saved for this my ambition but since I met this girl, I never have anything called savings again while I still go on borrowing to satisfy her needs.

The most painful part of it all is that anytime she asks of anything and I’m not capable of what she asked for, she will first block me on Whatsapp and drop a breakup message. I will be the one to call and persuade her and when she feels like to unblock me she will do that.

But now, she’s asking for salah cloth and I don’t have the amount she’s asking for. I told her I don’t have the money for now while I told her that I don’t know what tomorrow will say and as soon as I said this, she dropped the breakup message as usual and block me on WhatsApp.

Please Advise me on what to do as this is getting on my nerves.
Do you want cheese with that whine? huh

I can never quite understand why people come on Nairaland to bitch…
And it’s almost always the same thing - some dude whining about spending money on a girl.

First, if you don’t have it to spend, don’t…
Second, if money is the only thing you have to offer or the girl wants, you NOT IT for each other.

MOVE THE EFF ON!

How many Burna’s many HITS sampled a Fela song?
Name them, and prove that you are actually familiar with Fela’s music.

I know it might sound awkward, but wearing uniforms has a way of instilling a culture of professionalism.

For example in medical school you are meant to dress a certain way, likewise lawyers. It becomes easier adapting to such dress code even after graduation. My thoughts tho
That must be why Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Sorbonne, Cambridge, Oxford, MIT, and all the top universities wear uniforms…oh wait!

But it would have been better to continue with the Ambode plan to turn the Onikan axis into a cultural destination, with this reconstructed JK Randle Center, the old State House (recovered from the federal government), the National Museum (agreed to be handed over to the Lagos Stare government to renovate/rebuild and operate), plus the proposed Lagos modern museum.

Nigerians should learn to accept some facts. This university and the other big two are far above their Nigerian counterparts Infrastructurally and otherwise.

We also have beautiful Private Universities here.

The OP didn’t base his facilities post on it being a public university…

bro don’t just open your mouth to spew trash we all pay our tax in form of Vat, ussd charge, stamp dues & all that & which services is the govt providing pls ordinary electricity is a problem you are here talking about services the govt is a colossal failure
I ignore childish and uncouth personal insults…
They merely betray your lack of substance and a crude personal upbringing.

On the SUBSTANTIVE discourse, you seem to be struggling with the very elementary concept of INCOME (and general) taxes…
Those USAGE ‘taxes’ or charges you cite are for services the payers SPECIFICALLY used. Who else would pay them? The Fairy Godmother?!

Meanwhile, INCOME and other general taxes accrue to the Treasury to pay for general public services and infrastructure, such as public education, healthcare, security, public transportation, roads, etc., even if the payers don’t specifically avail themselves of those things.
____________________________

Btw, please quit making juvenile Strawman Arguments. It is NOT mutually-exclusive to criticize the respective failures of government(s) and citizens. Accordingly, while my general discourse on Nigerians and taxes SPECIFICALLY “recognizes the gross failure of government”, it nonetheless does NOT excuse the equally gross failure of citizens to fulfill their basic civic responsibilities (such as paying income taxes).

Unfortunately, as I also previously noted, the saying that a nation DESERVES its leaders is aptly demonstrated in NIGERIA! SMH

The landmass of the North is a curse to the North. As big as the North is, they still come to the south for menial jobs.
My comment was NOT valuative…
If you split Nigeria in 2, South will immediately be a middle income nation, while North will become one of the world’s poorest nations.

Nonetheless, why stop at 2…
If you want to split, go the whole hog, so the South-South will stop financing the rest of Nigeria and become one of the world’s wealthiest!

What you should be talking about is what has government done with the tax paid to them....

Meanwhile, here’s my general position on Nigerians and taxes (emphasis added)…
https://www.nairaland.com/6610447/did-know-buhari-building-train/7#102876082

9jaRealist:
Without presumption or prejudice (and assuming that you actually and timely pay all of your due taxes), the propensity of the average Nigerian to EVADE taxes is one of the contributing factors for the paucity of public services. The fact is that Nigeria reportedly has the LOWEST tax to GDP ratio in all of Africa (yes, even lower than many very poor African nations) speaks volumes. The reality is that, outside of the civil service and those subject to PAYE withholding taxes, the greater majority of income-earning Nigerians (in formal and informal employment or self-employment) ACTIVELY EVADE paying their due taxes or notoriously underpay (when/if they pay at all) - and yet everyone seems to expect world-class public services. Of course, a big reason is the Culture of Entitlement cultivated by the oil windfall that the overwhelming majority of Nigerians do not contribute to in any way at all!

I am well aware that many Nigerians would argue that they do (or should) not pay taxes because there is little or no evidence of tax revenues being put to good use or that said revenues are more than likely to be embezzled, but such an argument only renders the citizens just as culpable the rulers (I am loathe to refer to these lot as actual leaders). Every nation/society is a social construct built upon the basic premise of rights and responsibilities, perhaps best manifested the so-called “social contract” between the government and the governed. But every contract requires “consideration” - which means that you have to provide something to get something in return. Accordingly, when citizens fail to pay timely and fully pay their due taxes, it is not only a moral failing in the basic tenets of citizenship (those taxes can be likened to equity investment in the nation, from which citizens expect some form of returns) but also a more legalistic failure to uphold one’s obligations under the “social contract” - and consequently strips such derelict citizens of any (moral or other) right to complain.

Unfortunately, so many Nigerians have this rather weird notion of citizenship, whereunder citizens enjoy only rights but do not bear commensurate responsibilities. Yet, as with most of human experience, one most often gets what one pays for - and that’s if you’re lucky! Furthermore, Nigerians have a rather delusional misconception of the resources available to the state (even if politicians did not steal a significant portion of public resources, as they persistently do). Just for perspective, the US expended over $4 trillion just on healthcare last year (2020) and yet could not guarantee access to healthcare (or adequate and affordable healthcare) to all of its citizens - including to many actual taxpayers! Accordingly, even if Nigeria spent every single cent it earned from oil and gas sales ($32.6 billion in 2018, even before the pandemic decimated revenues in 2020, and for perspective Kuwait made $60.7 billion same year with a population of only 1 million nationals) solely on healthcare and neglected everything else, the government still wouldn’t have anywhere near the revenues to provide the sort of world-class healthcare across the nation and across all strata of society (even if our thieving politicians did not steal a penny - which of course they grossly do).

While fully cognizant of the gross failures of governments in Nigeria, it is sometimes irritating that Nigerians often act as if they have absolutely no agency in their own fortune (or perhaps more accurately, misfortune) - even discounting that the poorest Nigerians are often the most fervent supporters/voters of “Sai Baba” and the political elite, and even the supposedly educated class and/or middle-class will fanatically defend their “own” (defined by tribal, religious or such other base or primordial affiliation) in almost all circumstances (including corruption charges). Yet, every single CHALLENGE in our nation is also an OPPORTUNITY - and as life experience has amply illustrated, the most successful people and organizations are those who address or otherwise help solve challenges. In Nigeria, our eyes are too clouded with the torrent of tears from our wailing about our challenges that we fail to see opportunities arising therefrom.

The saying that every society DESERVES the leadership it gets couldn’t be more aptly demonstrated than in Nigeria!
