PoliticsRe: Okorocha Overwhelms Jonathan’s Campaigners At World Igbo Congress by abagoro(m): 4:40pm On Sep 21, 2014
OdenigboAroli: Berem, this is Akpokuedike's speech as delivered by Osodieme.
Obiano Makes case for Economic Re-invention of South East
The governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has made a case for a more aggressive approach to the development of the South East in a manner that would ensure its survival as an economic block.
In an address at this year’s edition of the World Igbo Congress in Houston titled “Laying the Foundations of Hope, Chief Obiano argued that as true sons and daughters of the great Igbo ancestors who had mastered the art of democratic leadership long before the arrival of the colonial masters, Ndigbo must define the challenges of the present time and rise to them.
Chief Obiano who was represented at the Congress by his wife Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano further noted that the Igbo of the 21st century has evolved dramatically over the years to the growing acknowledgement of the attentive world but regretted that in spite of the individual accomplishments of Ndigbo, Igboland has continued to suffer economic neglect.
Articulating his position on the least considered response to the threat of Boko Haram against Igbos and their businesses in the Northern parts of the country, Chief Obiano argued that the time has come to build the economy of the South East to serve as a safe harbor to Igbo merchants who face life-threatening situations in different hostile locations across the world.
Said he; “It has been said that more often than not Ndigbo have often risen to the height of political cohesiveness when pushed to the wall or faced with the threat of extinction. Those who hold this view usually point at the Biafran War as an instance when our people lived out the true meaning of the well-known Igbo maxim of Onye aghana nwanne ya. But the ability of Ndigbo to cohere as a group when faced with extinction has been repeatedly challenged in recent times by the endless onslaught of Boko Haram in the North. As no true Nigerian leader will advocate an armed resistance to Boko Haram by any geo-political zone in the country, the question I would like to really ask is, when will the persistent threat of Boko Haram provoke Ndigbo into re-inventing the South East geographical zone?”
The governor further observed that as economic migrants, Ndigbo have have mastered the art of survival in unfriendly territories but without a viable economic homeland of their own, they will continue to fall victims to violent arguments between brothers in their adopted homes.
Said he; “the time has come to envision an economic future for our people – to build a vibrant economic block across the Niger where the famous business talent of our people will find expression in a more secure and friendly home.”
According to him, unlike their ancestors, “the Igbo in the 21st Century is not limited by the confines of culture and geography. Unlike his forefathers, the 21st Century Igbo has long exploded on the global stage, influencing and being influenced, contributing and borrowing from the diverse cultures of our time.”
Governor Obiano further observed that, Ndigbo have excelled on all fields as distinguished scholars, academics, scientists, writers, painters and historians. But it is however sad that ever since the end of the Biafran War, Igbo achievements have remained largely abroad. I stand to be corrected but it is mostly true that since the blast of the last gunshot of the Biafran War, no significant Igbo scientific genius has happened on Igbo soil.”
The governor maintained that as individuals, Ndigbo have distinguished themselves wherever they found themselves and have proven to humanity that they are just as good as any other socio-cultural group on God’s green earth, but they have yet to transform Igboland into a modern wonderland with their famous Igbo genius.
Said he; “time and time again, it has been proven that our inability to draw the attention of the world to Igboland with our genius is not for want of talent or greatness but essentially because of our inability to work together as a socio-political group in the turbulent political theater of Nigeria. This political immaturity has turned Ndigbo into a silent majority in a political universe where power belongs only to the people who have the audacity to grab it with both hands.”
Governor Obiano however reasoned that all hope was not lost for Ndigbo as could be seen with initiatives like the World Igbo Congress, observing that “so long as we can still come together under one roof to look at the grave issues of our collective survival as an ethnic nation of our own, there will always be light at the end of the tunnel.”
Obiano's speech is equally impressive. I feel glad that he made his contribution strictly with the issue at hand and not join the others in campaigning for Jonathan.

evegran: . Now it is apparent you're one of those sadists from other tribes who doesn't appreciate the development of Akwa Ibom state or even the development of places outside your tribe. I can smell jealousy all around ya! And you're delighted my state is going through this. Well as a proud oron lady, I'm optimistic for my state- so how about you save your criticisms or pile em up together and throw em at your Gov whoever the Bleep he is.
http://thenationonlineng.net/new/akpabio-underdeveloped-oron-says-ex-commissioner/

ta Awak, an Oron man, is a trained aircraft engineer and a former Information Commissioner in Akwa Ibom State under former Governor Victor Attah. He spoke with reporters on the politics of succession and the  alleged marginalisation of Oron Nation in Akwa Ibom State. Kazeem Ibrahym was there.
Considering the massive cash inflow into Akwa Ibom State, how would you assess the performance of the state government so far?
You may not believe it, but I tell you that there is massive hunger in Akwa Ibom State. Like everybody knows, the annual revenue profile of Akwa Ibom State equals that of Lagos State. As a matter of fact, from 2007 till date, it will be interesting to know that Akwa Ibom State is one of the states that have grossed up to or about 2 trillion naira. Such vast volume of money has never entered this state since the creation of this state in 1987. It may also interest you further that what Akwa Ibom State grosses annually from the Federation Account equals the total amount of money that accrues to all the Igbo-speaking states of the Southeastern zone. It does appear also that it is equal to the total amount of money received by all the Hausa-Fulani North eastern states put together. As a matter of fact, in this year’s budget, what we have is about N500 billion, which is about four times the total amount of money that Cross River State is budgeting for this year. So,what are we trying to say? In terms of the revenue we have received compared to our recorded development, there is a wide gap. As it is, Akwa Ibom State is known to be one of the richest states in the country, but the vast majority of the people of Akwa State are pauperised, the economic class in Akwa Ibom State has been reduced to executive beggars. It is a tragedy, a supreme tragedy that we can have this huge amount of money, yet it is not reflected in an improved standard of living of Akwa Ibom people. It will be interesting to know what the current poverty index of Akwa Ibom State is, but I know for sure that there is hunger in this state. Very, very saddening, indeed. Thank you very much.
But the Governor keeps talking of “Uncommon Transformation” of Akwa Ibom State. How then do you justify this statement with what you have just said?
In all fairness to my good friend, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Godswill Obot Akpabio, he has, to all intents and purposes, recorded some measurable structural development within the Uyo metropolis. Please note that Uyo metropolis only constitutes just one local government of the nine Local Governments that make up Uyo Senatorial District. This hyperbolised claim about uncommon transformation can also be seen in a section of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District where my dear governor hails from. That is where you see this so-called uncommon transformation. Have you taken a ride through Eket Senatorial District? It may interest you to know that the petrodollar that drives the economy of Akwa Ibom State all comes from Eket Senatorial District. When you get into Eket Senatorial District, what accosts your sight is the glaring and soulful evidence of uncommon neglect. Then, when you now go to the Oron Nation, where I come from, you will see stark reality of criminal marginalisation of both the natives and the communities. Further, when you get into the 31 LGAs of Akwa Ibom State, all you see is evidence of neglect, plunder and uncommon roguery. That is what is going on in Akwa Ibom State.
Akwa Ibom State is getting prepared to elect a successor to Governor Godswill Akpabio. The most current situation is that the Executive Council of Akwa Ibom State has recently nominated three persons…

BY JOE EFFIONG, UYO ON SEPTEMBER 16, 2014 · COVER
Akwa Ibom State Government has said it may not be able to pay contractors for new projects because the projected revenue of over N400 billion expected by the state has not been realised.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, made the observation in reaction to the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) mid-year publication which showed that the state earned the highest revenue of N135.84 billion between January and June this year while Osun earned the least with N19.61 billion.

While debunking the claim that the state was the highest revenue earner in the country, Umanah said no state in the country earned up to one per cent of the revenue of the country.

His words: “When you are talking about allocation of N135.84 billion, it sounds big to you, but it is not a lot of money when you are doing key projects. When you look at projects like the new international stadium, these are not bread and butter projects. These are quality projects that cost money.

“You don’t build flyovers with N1 or N2. You don’t build underground tunnels with N2; you don’t dualize federal roads with N2; you build them with billions, so you put these monies into big projects. So, the states you are mentioning, are they able to do these types of projects?”

According to the information commissioner, the much touted N135.84 billion was a ‘drop in the ocean’ when juxtaposed with the over N400 billion 2014 budget estimates of the state government which provided for 80 per cent capital expenditure and 20 per cent recurrent expenditure.

“If God allows you to have something from your God-given resources, you also need to apply these resources to key infrastructure that would help turn your state around in terms of the right infrastructure, and I think Akwa Ibom has been prudent.

“If you look at that money you are talking about, if you take 80 per cent of it, you will be talking about N80 billion and then you may be talking about N20 bilion for recurrent. What will that amount to? If you juxtapose that with the budget of the state you can see that we are running a deficit.

“If that is what we have as half year report, and we have over N400 billion as budget estimates for 2014, you can see clearly that we are running a deficit and we may not have money to pay for projects,” he said.

First of all I will have to say that both Anambra and Enugu teaching hospitals are lovely. At least they look better than the image of Imo teaching hospital I've seen.

As for 30% you should know I mean every road including bush paths and not just the major roads. You once claimed all the entire roads in Anambra are good even when I complained about Enugu-Onitsha expressway which the FG is playing politics with.

Even Uyo that Akpabia claims to have invested billions of Dollars is mostly untarred and flooded during rains.

At the end of the day, its better we show the light while we tackle darkness. I've also read several times where you claim all the roads in Anambra are tarred while in reality only about 30% is.

akpabio has repaired 85percent of federal roads in akwa ibom without making a noise.rochas should stop decieving nigerians with his phantom lies
Lies from the pit of hell. Akwa-Ibom probably has the worst road in the East. Even worse than Abia. The propaganda is carefully avoiding the bad part and focusing on the few done in 7 and half years of receiving highest allocation with moderate population. Here is Itu-Calabar federal highway.

http://thecityreporters.com/indigenes-tackle-akpabio-poor-state-calabar-itu-highway/

http://thenationonlineng.net/new/tales-woes-agony-calabar-itu-road/

The bad condition of Calabar-Itu highway, a major road linking Akwa Ibom and Cross River States has become a source of concern to many indigenes of the state in recent times.

The highway, The City Reporters gathered has become a deathtrap to thousands of people who travel along the road on regular basis.

Some indigenes in a chat with The City Reporters at the weekend said the road has gone so bad such that accidents occur along that road almost on daily basis because all the heavy trailers and trucks that come from some part of the north and other neighboring states of Calabar to other states like Abia, Imo, and Port-Harcourt.

One of the sources and a transporter said it was unfortunate that the state Governor, Godswill Akpabio was insensitive to repairing the road considering the plight of thousands of Akwa Ibom people who use that road on daily basis either for business deals, work and other endeavors.

He said “Yes I appreciate the governor for the massive roads constructed so far in the state but you need to go and see how bad Calabar-Itu Highway has gone. And you know the road is so narrow. It is even worse when you travel in the night. In fact we don’t stop praying to God until you arrive your destination.

“And apart from the regular road accidents, when it rains the road is impassable for at least 24hours. Sometimes you see the heavy trucks and trailers falling and blocking the whole road and before the vehicle are removed by the relevant authority you know how much time it must have cost those of us doing business. It is very, very sad but we are hoping on God to touch this government to do something about that road very soon.

As a matter of fact, the SE governors should declare a state of emergency on federal roads in the region and also tackle erosion problems as well.
The worst part of it all is that Igbo Governors are under blackmail and unable to speak out. I almost gave up until Okorocha just spoke out. Look at Abia State and all their federal roads. This goes to confirm my earlier confidence in Amaechi and Okorocha as stand outs and people with conscience.

CultureItalian Couple Perform Igbo Traditional Wedding Rites by abagoro(op): 4:32pm On Sep 03, 2014
An Italian couple recently stunned the people of Imo State when they wedded in a rural community of the state.

While many Nigerians would give an arm to have their wedding in Dubai, London, Paris or any other beautiful city in the world, an Italian couple, Kevin Prattico and Carmola Guardsch, chose the rustic community of Umuduruzo in Amaigbo, Nwangele council area of Imo State to consummate their marital union. On August 17, Kevin Prattico and his wife Carmola Guardsch, who work for Azione Verde, a Non-Governmental Organization at Amaigbo, decided to have both their traditional and Christian weddings in the town to the delight and amazement of the locals who trooped out en masse to witness their marriage.
Speaking to Oriental News, Prattico revealed that their decision to have their wedding at Umuduruzo community was because of their love for the African culture.

He said that they also considered themselves as part of the community since they have lived and worked among the people of the community.

He said that the people of the  ommunity are very hospitable just as they see them irrespective of their colour and race as part of the community.

“We could have had our wedding in Italy or any of the European cities, but we chose to have it here in this community because we love the African culture and tradition and especially the traditional wedding ceremony which must be done before the Christian one. I must tell you that we love it because you don’t have this thing in Europe. Again we live and work among the people of this community and we also consider ourselves as part of this community.

“The people of this community are very hospitable and they regard us as members of the community and not as foreigners who live among them.

You can see that the entire people of the community came to celebrate

with us because they see us as part of them. Even the women have

already inducted my wife as member of the Catholic Women Organization after our Christian wedding and this shows that they accept us as part of this community and we are happy about it. We thank those who felicitated with us, we want others to also emulate us because the Igbo culture is good and should be preserved,” he said.

During the traditional wedding, Chief Isaac Duru while performing the traditional rites between the Italian couple commended them for their love and appreciation of the Igbo culture.

He also admonished them to love each other as husband and wife, adding that in Igbo culture marriage is a highly valued institution as he thanked God for bringing them together.

Similarly, the Parish Priest of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church,

Reverend Father Boniface Duru, a native of Umuduruzo, who officiated

at the Christian wedding while blessing the couple encouraged them to live in peace and to put God first in all they do to merit his immense blessings.

Fr. Duru, who is the founder of Azione Verde that brought the Italians to assist in humanitarian work of the organization in Amaigbo, admonished the gathering to always love their neighbours regardless where they may come from, saying that God is love.

His words: “We are all the same people regardless of the colour of our skins, we must always show love, care to our neighbours because God is love. The large number of people who came to witness this ceremony today is an indication that the newly wedded couples have been accepted as part of this community and we are happy for them.

“It has been over 12 years when the Italians came to Nigeria and established schools and hospitals just to help the needy. They came because they are very much interested in our customs and we Africans should value our cultures. This traditional wedding demonstrates their love and enthusiasm for African way of life”.

Domenico Agatiello, who spoke on behalf of the Italians and the charity workers at the event, expressed their profound joy and happiness for the newly wedded couples and for identifying with the Igbo culture who have shown them love and hospitality.

I don't know the motive for this thread but at least everyone can see Rochas house which has been there since 1990s. He also has a Rochas foundation school which has been there for a longer time. He also has some hotels which have been there for a very long time. He did not wait to be Governor before investing at home. All those vying for political posts in Imo State should show us their investments in Imo and before going to Abuja.

PoliticsRe: What Do You Consider To Be The Greatest Achievement Of GEJ? by abagoro(m): 8:42pm On Sep 02, 2014
KaiMallam: What do you consider as the greatest achievement of President Goodluck Jonathan till date? I think he has performed quite well on federal roads, electoral system, electricity. What other areas do you consider as his greatest achievements or areas where there is much left to be desired.
This thread to me is the most important thread ever opened on Nairaland in recent years. Beyond sentiments of tribalism, partisanship and religious affiliation we can make bold to present an area of sporadic improvement traced to Jonathan's actions or inactions.

Obasanjo era saw the telecommunication revolution under the watch of Ndukwe, banking revolution under the watch of Soludo, Stock exchange revolution under Ndi-Okereke Onyiuke. The cassava revolution and introduction of foreign rice farmers to Nigeria, Nigerian music take over across Nigeria and Africa. He also started the power reforms by granting Barth Nnaji the rights to build a private power plant in Aba and establishing a road map for gas power generation systems across Nigeria which has dual functions of stopping gas flaring and converting the gas to electrical energy.

Coming to Jonathan, I can say that his greatest achievement is consolidating on some of Obasanjo's revolutionary achievements. The most important is agriculture.
