It's obvious you want to argue just for the sake of arguing. For professionals, 60,000 pounds is nothing but for commoners of course, even 20k is good enough. I've had jobs where I made less than 18k a year, I'm now at a job where I'm making over 100k per year after taxes. Don't expect anyone to give you anything just because you think you deserve it, you've got to upgrade yourself and go get it. Instead of living in lalaland where you believe jobs like 60,000 pounds belongs only to CEOs, you better increase your network and get rid of whatever is holding you back in life. 2 Masters, years of experience as a professional and a network as strong as 5 day old eba, my guy I would be crazy to earn less than 60,000 pounds a year!

I can speak from personal experience in the U.S. $60k - $70k salary is like starting out in many professional disciplines. Most of my friends and family are professionals and I can attest that we Nigerians are earning good salaries. If a professional told you they earn $150k salary, it most likely does not include incentive bonuses (anywhere from 10 to 50%), stock options and or profit sharing. An executive that earns a $300k salary could easily get another $500k to $1 million and even more in stock options.
The most successful Nigerians in the U.S. are those that pursued a passion. They got well educated, pursue their passion and became extremely financially well off in the process.

But enough about money and finances. It doesn't make sense to argue about which country is better based on finances. Most western countries have evolved to where the citizens are pursuing higher goals other than financial, and success is defined in much broader terms. Nigeria on the other hand is still grappling with basic issues of day to day survival so getting the most money one can get besides paramount and even so enough to transfer to ones offspring

I can't help but laugh, 60,000 pounds really sounds like a lot of money don't it? Bloody paupers . If you were educated and networked yourself properly you would find those jobs in abundance. Back when I worked for J.P. Morgan Chase, the senior auditors and software engineers at the london offices made more than 60,000 pounds per year. I also know Pricewaterhousecoopers(PWC) pays their consultants and senior consultants well above that. How many jobs do they give to black people? I don't know, all I know is that I have over 20 friends and family members making around that easily, if you are not so fortunate UPGRADE yourself instead of insulting people on Nairaland, especially people beyond your level!

I still think you are talking about anormalies and not the general average, someone making 3000 pounds a month in the UK can live like someone in Ikoyi or Lekki and not have to pay for their own security. Even at 3000 pounds when converted to Naira equals over 1.2 million Naira per month, I've yet to see majority of middle class Nigerians making that much in a month, even the ones that manage to come close to it are still lamenting the lack of adequate ammenities, I don't know what you mean by middle class but middle class in Nigeria usually makes less than 2000 pounds per month, you can ask around....lol. Come on, have you really done your analysis? I've been in the USA for about a decade now and I make over 100,000 dollars a year after taxes. I have uncles, friends and other family members in London and surrounding areas making over 60,000 pounds per year and they are just ordinary auditors, engineers and so on. I understand taxes and all but I also understand universal healthcare, tax refund and so on, my point is simple, when compared as a whole and not just frgaments or anormalies, there's no way majority of Nigerians are living better than those in the UK or the USA. Nigerians might be happier due to the fact that we love suffering and smiling but when it comes to things that counts such as 24/7 electricity, reliable healthcare, transportation, security and so on, there's no contest!

It depends on your efforts and blessings, in the U.S and the UK if you cut your clothes according to your size and manage to get a good job over 60,000 pounds per year, you would not only be able to live better than most people in Nigeria, you would also have enough to send your children to the university. Sure you won't enjoy the parties and nonchalant activities most Nigerians enjoy but you are doing something meaningful in your life and that of your children. The memory of this sad event still lingers. It was a horrible one.

I lived close to the garage (Ago garage) . I was at the garage with some other students chanting when the vigilantes, well kitted with charms and guns were heading speedily towards our direction.

Every single living soul ran different ways within a blink. It wasn't funny. I had to call my sis who was at P. S at that hour to remain there pending positive update to return to town though, they were later ferried to mini campus at around 7pm.

My family got the news via an international TV station (CNN or...) even before our local stations could get some reportage about the happenings.

While many student slept at mini campus, I and some hall mates decided to remain, haven been assured of our safety by our landlady.

A lot of ladies were sexually harassed and manhandled at the wee hours of the night. We could hear sounds of plea which only lasted for minutes. What happened after could not be ascertained.

Mobile networks jammed ( i think the traffic was super high). I was able to get through 112. My complaint wasn't new to the lady who responded as many have already reported the situation in Ago-iwoye. Feedback from her was that the DPO of Ago-iwoye has been signaled.

The night was the longest. Morning delayed its arrival - the sun slept deeper.

Finally, morning arrived. The then SUG president instructed students to go pick a thing or two and hurry back to mini campus as the host community could no longer assure students of their safety.

Army and police passonel were well deployed to help student off the community.

From mini - campus to Itamerin to oru - junction then to almost half way to ijebu-ode we journeyed on foot.

The morning was cold and well laddened with fear, hunger, anger and tears as we watch fellow student collapsed out of stress. They were revived though, some were placed on the top boot of a slowly moving vehicle while others were aided by fellow students.

Subsequent updates from local news outlets gave figures of the unlucky ones who couldn't make it.
