Itsrm: The rate has been stable. And I can confirm that a lot of people are diverting money meant for dollar purchase to Tbills. I see. I was hoping the fx rates will improve as fewer Naira notes now chase the dollar. But then, stability is a step in the right direction. |
Investment › Re: Treasury Bills In Nigeria by Acidosis(m): 7:23pm On Mar 13, 2024 |
Itsrm: It's working. Far less naira is chasing the dollar. Dollar will need to move from 1600 to 2000 for it to be better than current TB rates within the next one year. How so? $1 is currently over N1,600. What I don't seem to understand is this. They mop up the money this year, are they also going to mop it up next year with high interest rates when it matures? Interesting question. I'm wondering what the FG/CBN intends to do with the trillions of Naira though. Although I don't agree that mopping up Naira through FDs or bonds can curb inflation in a country like Nigeria, I get the whole textbook justification for mopping up funds. But, I'm just wondering what would be done with this cash. Sometime in 2022, The Cable reported in a caption that "FG to repay N20trn 'Ways and Means' loans with treasury bills." During the same regime, FG also reported using TBs for infrastructure. |

Politics › Re: Tinubu Threatens CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso by Acidosis(m): 1:26pm On Mar 13, 2024 |
DeLaRue: I suspect the CBN will not want naira to go higher than say N1300 for a while yet.
In my view, N1450 - 1650 is the pain point range where imported goods becomes less and less affordable, and investment in local alternatives can begin to take shape. This is a higher priority for the government.
If you're one of those who believe we need to go from consumption to production, then you need to know that, that transition is unlikely to happen if dollar rate is at N700. At that rate, imports will be too cheap.
The Cbn will not even allow the naira to go anywhere near N700 for a few years to come, otherwise we will be back to square one where we are back to importing everything under the sun, with no production capacity of our own. These unbridled imports will then need to be funded by government borrowing dollars for future generations to pay.
It ain't happening.
Let's try and produce more of what we use. DevilsEqual: Your analysis dey always burst my brain but then, if the exchange rate remains that high then Goods become unaffordable for even the middleclass, and that means things will be worst for those at the bottom
Its not gonna be anything good for thr country as most people dont even earn enough to start with
Acidosis, come and explain/tackle this point The argument that a high exchange rate (such as N1600 to a dollar) would discourage imports overlooks many facts, one of which is that most of the goods Nigerians import lack local alternatives. We have numerous examples to support this claim, such as phones, gadgets, electronics. The senate president recently allocated over N3bn for freezers for his constituency. Not one will be produced by a Nigerian manufacturer in Nigeria. In fact, I could argue that prices of domestically produced goods currently exceed those of imported ones. The only reason local rice is cheaper is because of differences in quality. If we ever see a reduction in the demand for foreign exchange at present or in the near future, it wouldn't be because Nigerians now produce more local goods. It is likely going to be due to two main factors: 1. firstly, local investors finding it increasingly unaffordable to manufacture goods. We have seen reports of manufacturing plants closing down. If the current N1600 will truly encourage local production, why are more manufacturing plants closing shop than ever? 2. secondly, a significant decrease in the rate of japa due to (i) Nigerians facing affordability issues and (ii) stricter border controls in many destination countries, like the UK, for instance. The only thing N1650 to a dollar will achieve is a drop in japa rate. In terms of local production, BAT will never see a significant gain in the foreseeable future. We can still maintain a reasonably low exchange rate (say, between N500 and N700) while imposing heavy taxes or outright bans on imports of specific items like food, rather than imposing such measures on everyone, including those who wish to purchase foreign products that we know no Nigerian company will produce in the next 100 years. How long will Nigerians have to pay N2 million for a common iphone because we are waiting for a Nigerian company to produce a phone. LOL. A dream and effort in futility. The concept of "comparative advantage" was coined for a reason. |

Whichever way you look at it, peace comes at a price. When people say that the wife is controlling him, more often than not, he is the one being the fo, ol in the relationship. Again, peace comes at a price, and fo, o lishness is the price some men have to pay to sustain their relationship with a faulty or imperfect partner.
A lot of times, women also take on that fo, ol ish role to keep their man. |

I used to be indifferent about it until recently when I realised that people even pick new enemies because someone did not post about their birthdays on social media. I understand the concept of celebrating one's life, at least before they die. However, in reality, many people have lost touch with the reality that the more birthdays they celebrate, the closer they are to their grave. All those '+1' posts are actually '-1. It wouldn't be a bad thing at all if we celebrate birthdays by simply counting our blessings and reflecting...though.. |
