Zino89: Engineers in the house please is this plan OK ? It looks good but can be improved. The Launge looks like 2 different lounges side by side. For this design to be this lengthy, the plot must have presented constraints. Depending on how the plot is, I would prefer the lounge to be rectangular. The dinning doubles as a lobby to the entire house, that is most inconvenient. I believe the lounge, dinning and the adjacent bedroom can be rearranged better. The bedroom and adjacent dinning should become the lounge while the lounge becomes the bedroom and dining. The other half should be mirrored to have the kitchen at the back. |

TheSkyIsBlue: My Sister Is About To Commit A Serious Taboo All In The Name Of Marriage
Hello Nairalanders!
Please ignore any typographical or grammatical error. I just want to pour it out the way it is in my heart.
I am seriously confused and worried about what is happening in my family and I will appreciate your candid advice.
There is this guy my sister has been in a relationship with for over seven years now. so he actually asked her hand in marriage and decided to come see my parents for introduction, about some months ago. My family decided to take their time to find out more about the guys family background as is required in Igbo tradition.
After several questions asked, my family came to find out that the guy is an Osu (an outcast). On knowing this, everybody in my family told my sister to cut ties with him and discontinue the relationship because it is a big taboo to get married to an Osu in my place . If you do, no family member or friend will attend your wedding or even have anything to do with you again.
But my sister refused to listen to anybody claiming she really loves the guy, that they have been together for a very long time and that she is not getting younger anymore (mind you, she is in her early thirties). Everybody (my parents and extended family members) tried to talk her out of it but she still didn't listen.
After much pressure and her continues insistence, my dad decided to give them his blessings, although against his wish (my dad is actually not really deep into tradition). Now the guy has done all the traditional rights and paid for her dowry. Their wedding is coming up soon.
But the problem now is, according to tradition and from what I heard, if she was allowed to go with the guy without my dad giving them his blessings, the stigma would have just been on her and she alone would have been considered Osu, since she insisted to continue with the marriage. But now that my dad has given them his blessings, it is considered that all of us (her siblings) will also have that link of Osu too. Except if she decide to put an end to the relationship and discontinue with the wedding, which I don't think my sister is ready to do.
I am really worried and depressed about it, cause I don't want anything that will affect me tomorrow when I want to get married just because of my sister's mistakes.
I will really like to get opinions and sincere advice especially from those that are familiar with tradition, cause I'm seriously bothered. Thanks! Guy, if you think your sister's marriage to an Osu makes you Osu, then you are a confirmed Osu. If you know you are not an Osu in your heart, no one can make you an Osu in this life or thereafter. Think like an Osu, you are an Osu! Think like a King, you are a King!! |

Omonigeriarere: The main reason is that police hardly disturbs. They have 80% assurance that your vehicular documentation is complete as there is no hiding place for you in Lagos On the contrast, once you arrive the North with your Lagos plate number, police will always park you and see your papers. In their minds, it is either you just bought the car in Lagos and moving it to the north or its a Lagos stolen car. Your papers better be complete. If you really want to be invincible in most parts of the country, Abuja is the number. |

Bought my car in Lagos with Lagos plate number and took the car to the north. Police always ask me to park and ask me "from where" "to where". Even KASTELEA in Kaduna always stop me.
Since a month ago that I got a Kaduna plate no, my hometown precisely, police don't stop me, even the KASTELEA guy that stopped just asked, "are you from GWT or its just a number. We ended up introducing our selfs and our respective villages.
I believe Abuja ABC is the most respected number in Nigeria. I don't know how much Lagos no is but Abuja ABC is even more expensive than all plates even when compared to other Abuja nos. |

RonaldoVido: Most cars can run to 1,000,000 miles but it's the knowledge of the driver to detect faults is what keeps a car till then.
My experience with cars is 90% of engine knock comes from OIL related issues.
Your oil filter is leaking and you have no idea. Your oil pump is blocked and you have no idea.
I think I can drive my next car to 900,000 miles with the experiences I have had. I mostly agree with you but will rather say 50%. Cooling system failure accounts for a considerable part of engine failure before 150kmiles or after. Engine failure in Nigeria due to cooling system failure is even greater than 50% due to the removal of thermostat and direct wiring of cooling fans. This is because over 50% of the engine wear and tear happens in the first 5mins of a cold start. This time is further extended to 10-30mins by removing the thermostat and further when fan is directly wired. 90% of our mechanics and drivers do not know the importance of operating a car engine at its optimum temperature and that it is as important as using the right engine oil to increase the lifespan of the engine. We use the wrong oil grade, remove thermostat and wire fans directly. From that day the lifespan of the engine takes a dive. |

alphaNomega: What do you mean by manual compressor? Manual compressor is the crude name for a Fixed Displacement Compressor (FDC). Automatic compressor is the crude name for a Variable displacement Compressor (VDC). 2008 Corolla mostly comes with a VDC from factory. Its operation is smoother without the regular clicks and jerks of the FDC. However, like the usual Nigerians we are, a more complicated system leads to more failure rate while properly fixing its faults and even the high cost of the VDC compressor makes AC technicians frown on it. Once your compressor goes bad, which happens sooner than later, you will be left with one option, change compressor to FDC. |

victorava: Hello Nairalanders
Two weeks back, my friend was apprehended by DSS officers from his residence in Lagos state and we have not heard from him.
I was driving out with him, immediately they saw us, they surrounded us and started asking questions. We now discovered that it was my friend that they were looking for. They collected his phones and followed him to his room to change his clothes. When I asked them what his offense was, they told me that they would like to ask him one or two questions.
They told me to meet them at their office and when I got there, I was not allowed access to their office. The officer at the gate told me that there was no such arrest. It was on Friday. I went there on Monday together with his wife and brother which was the following week, we were still denied access. They officer at the gate told us that if he's truly here that nothing will happen to him. He told us that anyone who is apprehended is not allowed to see anybody until after investigation.
We paid a Lawyer to go there the following day and the Lawyer eventually gained access, he was told that my friend was taken to Abuja the following day they arrested him.
We contacted a Lawyer in Abuja to go there and he was not allowed to see my friend. They told him to submit an application that they would get back to him. After few days, they did not contact him. He decided to go there this week and was denied access.
My friend has a wife and two kids, the wife has not been herself since this incident happened. She's been traumatized. She just wants to be sure if her husband is truly there.
Please Nairalander, I need your advice on the necessary steps I should take to be able to see my friend. Sorry for the long write up.
Admin please help me move this to front page, it is very urgent. Tears came to my eyes reading this. I get angry when I read such injustice but the situation is just hopeless. This will not happen if you or your friend have a connection to a Senator or Minister. No one will compensate the family for all the emotional trauma or the loss of livelihood. This is plain kidnap by government agents but an ordinary Nigerian will never get justice. May God help Nigerians. |

jossytech: A quest to find the world’s most “no-nonsense, no headaches car,” and have owned two so far.
This question is actually two questions:
which of the Corollas actually is the average model? how many miles will it do? There is a solid, statistical base available to judge that car, because so far, over 44 million were sold. That actually makes it the most sold car in the world of all time.
Working with the figures from this overview , it would appear that most of the Corollas sold had a 1.8 litre engine. So we can consider that an average Corolla.
As for sources to attest to its longevity, I can offer these:
my own experience of riding in Toyota Corolla taxis in Paraguay in the late 90s; most of those had between 300.000 and 700.000 km on the clock and seemed to be running just fine; this video, where we can see the protagonists riding in an early 2000s Corolla in Brazzaville, Congo - we don’t see the actual mileage, but for a car to get this dented up would take a few miles: How many km can Toyota Corolla last? , Innovation Advisor Originally Answered: How many miles will the average Toyota Corolla go? A guy rode an early 2000s Corolla in Brazzaville, Congo - we don’t see the actual mileage, but for a car to get this dented up would take a few miles: a friend of mine in Iraq ran a 1981 Corolla that had more than one million kilometres on the odometer with largely original running gear; there is a mid 90s Corolla here in my village in Sweden which seems to have had a rough life, yet its odometer stood at 435.000 km last time I talked to the owner;
Over the past 30 years, the German TUV Report more or less consistently listed the Corolla as a car with remarkably low, mechanical or electrical failure rates at over 11 years of age.
Having said that, I also had a colleague in England whose Corolla died at 300.000 km. I think he could have fixed it, but probably simply figured the repair was more expensive than the car was worth, which is of course a killer argument for many.
I would say, expect 300.000 km minimum if serviced well and driven properly, more if you are willing to replace things every now and then If 300,000km (186,411miles) is minimum, then that is very poor when 80% of cars imported to Nigeria come with 200k+miles. My neighbor got a beautiful (I admit) clean low mileage 2008 Corolla and will not shut up on how he will never use Honda because of the transmission and leg issues. Unfortunately, as clean as his car is, he is spending far more than me to maintain 2003 Accord. At the moment he is looking for money to change the transmission because the transmission slips when going to 4. I have no transmission issues with my troublesome 2003 accord in 5years. This is the 3rd 2008 Corolla I know that are having such problem. This is apart from the hub bearings followed by the shocks, then finally AC that must be changed to manual compressor. |

hesilo: I am so angry right now but i just want you opinion before i would do the unthinkable.
My younger brother saved up 2million naira to buy a car Corolla X(2007), truth is that he did not tell me before he made the decision of sending someone to lagos to buy the car, however he said he build trust because the guys (buyer) is a colleague and he bought a corolla 2010 for a colleague reason he gave him the money.
Reaching to Lagos according to him, he said he called the said man severally and it was difficult for him to pick his calls, when he does pick, he would say that there is no network or that he is charging his phone. Ok...send pictures of the cars you have seen he didn't. We tried even by video calling him, he never answered any of the video calls. The 3 cars he sent the pictures where by the roadside, this is someone that has 2million naira with him o. We espected to see him take pictures around car dealerships.
To cut the whole story short, the man came back with one of the pictures of the cars he sent only one picture of after several pleas for him to send more of the pictures so as to ascertain wether to make decision or not(picture attached). Findings after the car touched down PH on sunday were as follows;
1. The car is a badly repainted one. Whoever did the repainting did a terrible job that even other parts of the car had spill over paints on them 2. The driver's window does not wind smoothly, it drags itself up/down. 3. The car has an unclean interior, like a car that just left mechanic, nothing so neat about it 4. Dash board is so nothing to write home about, so scratched and old 5. Opened the bonnet and found sprayed paints on eventally every other parts of the components there. 6. The car did not come with alloy wheels for a car of 2million naira 7. The car does not have a spare key for a car of that amount. 8. The central lock does not work. you have to come down and lock all the does one after the other for a new car. 9. He claims the car is direct tokumbo(which we actually wanted) but that very one looks not it and disgusting 10. The engine has a sharp whistle as you drive which increases and decreases as it revs up/down 11. There is this noisy sound from the hubs which you can hear as you drive, which he's saying you can change hub that it is not a problem, for a new car of 2million naira, someone is changing hub again.
After all this discovery at test run, we gave him back the car for him to resell and give us back our money as we are rejecting and have nothing to do with that car or he brings us another car.
My question is how do i know if the car has been registered in this country before, cos i suspected the car is a nigerian used car as the smell of foregin something doesn't even attack you as you open the doors.
I am so angry now, i might render some children fatherless. People are so mean in this country.
NB: He was given accormodation money, 50k for the movement, feeding money for 2days. Sorry for the terrible experience. You should not have rejected or returned the car as am afraid you may not see that car again or the money. You should have encouraged him to count his losses save up and try again. My neighbor did that and he never got a dime thereafter. |

Something bothers me with the South South. It seems no one has noticed this The project contractors, Julius Berger disclosed that they received only 7.4 billion out of the 54.1billion earmarked for the project, with about 60% of the 7.4 billion withheld for compensation purposes leaving them with a paltry 3.4 billion to execute the project, which was grossly inadequate. In other words, only less than 13% contract works and payment has been fulfilled. Compensation in the South South is part of the reason why projects fail in that part of the country. I have worked on a fail project that compensation was 6 times the project cost. The project failed even after FG spent N2billion. This is also another project about to fail but the only thing the people care about is compensation. Why would a project not fail if 60% of the funds released is for compensation. It is no secret that compensation in the south south especially is covered in extreme corruption. |

Main reason for the bad roads in Nigeria is not lack of maintenance or construction of new roads, it is actually due to the excessive axle weight on the roads.
Cement, granite, fuel, steel etc distribution in Nigeria should not be on roads, rather should be by rail which is designed to carry more weight than the roads.
The entire cement and granite demand of Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Abia states is dependent on that Odukpani-Itu road. Why wont the road fail this way. Such heavy loads should be meant for trains only but not in Nigeria. |

Route99: I get the beginning of your post and understand social conditioning has a role to play in all this. Your last statement is the problem I am talking about. Love is not everything. It would hurt the OP so so bad if he finds out she even had an affair while in the first half of their relationship, which is very very common in situations like this. He may even prefer she lets him know at the beginning or at any point she changes her mind, or whenever she decides to breakup. Personally, I wouldn't hold it against her or see her in a bad light like some guys will, but I will likely end to the relationship because of problems that might arise. She didn't cheat, she realised he truly intended to remain celibate and could not overcome her desires. At the point she did the honourable thing by breaking up to overcome her desires. My problem is not with her, its with the OP who failed to realize that her breaking up was actually a sign of lack of commitment on his part. Like I said before, whoever would wish to embark on a no sex relationship should declare a timeline to transition to sex. Just like there is no marriage without sex, there is no dating without the issue of sex. Op should have known to either dont start a relationship without sex or a date to which sex will start (aka marriage). A truly no sex relationship doesn't exist. Its no sex before marriage. In that case, a marriage day is fixed and each partner keeps him/herself till the day. The girl had no wedding day to hold on, no sex to satisfy the urge and no commitment to hold on to. Op was busy thinking only for himself. She broke up for no reason according to OP but we know he didn't see the reason cos the reason was there but the girl couldn't start the topic. If she did, they would not even be together today. |

Route99: I thought it through my friend. Not all women are like what you described. There are women who will tell you they cannot date someone who isn't good in bed, there are women who insist they must taste what they're buying. It's better they communicate rather than keeping it to themselves, or assume their partner isn't serious about his or her stance. It saves everybody stress, there's no need pretending. Pretence could be what lead to the OP's case. This issue has lead serious problem in relationships, as partners even go behind and engage in sex, even while in a relationship. And no, he wasn't the cause. There is no need pining your ideology of 'sex and relationship' on him. Its not pretence my friend. Women are vulnerable and need to protect themselves from negative perception. Any girl I start dating who tells me she is not going down with a no sex relationship will come off to me as a sex addict by first impression. That will be bad for her since 50% of guys would not treat her serious from that day. I have a friend who broke up with a girl because she told him how she drank alcohol and passed out. Instead of appreciating her truthfulness he broke up. I personally broke up with a girl when i discovered she was a virgin. I discovered when we tried to have sex but didn't get penetration. I broke up because she was just a fling to me and I don't want to hurt her, she cried because she thought I dumped her because she didn't give me the sexual satisfaction i desired. Girls go through those things so its not safe for a girl to put all her feelings out like that since most relationships are complicated. The truth is not always the right thing to say. What goes on in the mind should not always come out of the mouth. If the girl told him, "no I want sex", he will end the relationship. She wanted him so she managed to stay celibate until her desires got the better of her. |

Route99: Then she would have made it very very clear during the relationship or while breaking up. That way, they'll both know where they stand. Something like this should be clearly communicated. Clearly you didn't think this through. You want a woman to tell a guy that she cannot be in a no sex relationship? Do you know what that means to a woman. Its like directly asking the guy for sex. A woman who does that will definitely send the wrong signals to the guy. Almost every girl at the beginning of a relationship tells you she wants a no sex relationship but they are all lying and trying to give a good impression that would not last. If op meets a new babe today and starts a no sex relationship, the babe will date him thinking he was only joking. When weeks turn to months and before a year, 99% of the babes will break up with no reason just like it has happened. It is op's ignorance that has caused this. There is no point having a relationship tagged "no sex relationship". Every opposite sex relationship where love or physical attraction is present has sex behind it. The sex is either before marriage or after marriage but sex must be part of it. Any person who wants a no sex relationship must put a marriage proposal to it to make it workable which the op failed at first and corrected the second time. |

coolguy4christ: I did not sleep with another girl whilst we were apart, in fact since we got back, I have not slept with her. It's a no-sex relationship. I know you're a coolguy4christ but your bar has been set too high especially for this girl. The fact that she broke off with you, hooked up with another and came back to you means she doesn't fully agree with your no sex relationship status. She was just putting up to you because she liked you and know you are a good guy. 2ndly, the reason there is a white or black lie is that some lies are important while others are not, you should be able to differentiate. This girl lies to you because of who you are. She has done things shes not proud of and she knows you will not like it. Yet, to prevent doing more bad things to you (keeping a secret), she came clean. As far as I'm concerned, she is a better person than you who "claim" to be self righteous but judge other people's actions. You set your own rules and its easy for you but you dont want to know how it is not easy for you partner. You will make a bad husband since you care only about yourself, your desires, your satisfaction and your religion. Maybe she broke off with you because she needed sex which you didnt give. You didn't give her sex which she tried to suppress, you didn't know her problem or cared to find out or encourage her to remain celibate. You forced your lifestyle on her and expect her to suck it up. Op, enough of the rules and being judgemental. She sounds like a stronger person than you give her credit. Work on yourself and help her become the person you want her to be or find someone without a flaw and exactly as you want. She knows you, she has put up with you, appreciate her and do the needful (end her misery ASAP). |
