And what if many of them fails or scores below the expected, will the institution deny the student his certificate with acquired grade?

Maybe the school should be able to do such for the institution's lecturers and see if truly many of them are supposed to be lecturing!!!!

Does this process if it proves anything help the region?

1. Yes
2. Yes, place on elevated platform
3. You can store it anywhere but follows the rules;

A. Ensure that the grains is completely dry. Drying b4 storage may help to reduce the initial rate of infestation

B. Take the 3 PICS bag apart and check the 2 inner bags for holes and tears.

C. Make sure there are no air pockets at the bottom of the bag,

D. Make sure no grains gets in between the bag

E. Keep the bags in a safe and dry place, keep it from rodents because it may make hole in the bag
Thanks very much.

1)Please can the bag be used for as storage for all grain types or only beans?
2)Also during storage is the bag placed on an elevated platform or it can be placed directly on the bare floor of the store house?
3) Please what would be the best temperature or a store house(storage facility) where grains are kept for long duration storage?

Thanks for your response.

I’m trying to understand your message.

This is my position though:

- AC is not a necessity in every room if the house design is functional.

- wraparound terrace is used in sun-drenched climate, to reduce the effects of heat. It performs same function as a brise soileil or sun breaker on glazed area.
The typical involuntary thought of the Nigerian mind is to provide an AC in every space in a house as long as money is readily available to spend. Provision for such is not really a functionality of the house design. It's like someone switching ON an AC during a rainfall.

I understand the wrap around terrace or brise soileil or sun breaker. They tend to do the same thing but it's slightly distinguished based on material type used to achieve it's purpose.

[quote author=n3xt post=104417610]In 2012, I shared the information below. I think it’s still relevant

_______

Efficient Designs: Natural lighting or PHCN?

I love the designs and concepts of Haven Homes, Nigeria based on functionalities. Their daylighting concept offers natural light and effective illumination through windows, ventilators, skylights etc and not via ACs. It also reduces lighting/energy bills while maximizing visual comfort. Different things appeal to different people sha!

I wonder why windows must always be the standard 1500 x 1200, 1800 x 1200, 600 x 600, when we have extreme hot weather. Why doors must always be solid core? Why all rooms must have curtain? Why all houses must have an AC, when PHCN is yet to meet their 4000mw target? Why we must rely on artificial lighting when we require generators to power them? Too many questions begin for answers.

Daylighting provides freshness and enhances efficiency. It brings the outdoor inside and has direct impact on productivity.

__________

To your question:

The properties and arrangements of walls (internal/external) affect both the thermal conditions (heat and cooling demand) of a building and the energy demand.
Our building designs are so flawed that we always put aesthetics, security, privacy etc over efficiency and functionality in our home design.

Most people don’t even understand why a particular size of window is chosen for their project. We always feel window sizing is all about clients preference or design requirement and not a technical decision.

For instance I have wraparound terrace in the area where I have my extremely large windows just to shade it during extremely hot weather.

Another reason for overheating in our climate is improper selection of area of glazed walls and partitions. Then there’s issue of placement/orientation. We use ACs to correct these design flaws.

The same applies to houses that requires artificial lighting to light up extremely dark areas.

Theyre design flaws and not a peculiar environmental issue or naija thing as we often think.

_______
Pic - Open Plan Living Design (Upcoming NextHome Project)
[/quote

A perfect build remains so depending on builder's experience and clients' taste.
The necessities of standard(s) is that it stays within acceptable conditions for minimum comfort but nothing stops the builder/client from "improving" on such standards to get a better feel.
I don't know how ACs are used to correct design flaws. But I agree that orientation/placement of walls causing some of the issues raised. One thing about an AC is that it does not bring in new air into an apartment.
I can't say much regarding terrace as shade to windows towards extremely hot weather. Except one is given more consideration to aesthetic rather than functionality. We try not to solve one issue by creating another.

It's not every size/shape of land that one can build a living home if 90% of your concerns is to be met even if one is to build vertical excepts one intends to build a warehouse. grin

1. Yes, it's on the same wall. Main sink also in same line directly under the main window in the pic I shared. If you can find good spots to have more than one window in the kitchen, better.
2. The kitchen has 1 main window and a smaller one directly above as seen in the pic. Yes you should, I didn't observe the kitchen's wind direction during construction because the living room has 5 windows. The house generally has a lot of windows bro. The kitchen window is also where the sun rises from so it's perfect.
3. The A/C was installed because I was anticipating heat but the fans alone work well to remove heat and odor. We hardly use the A/C.
You seem to have a small kitchen then the reason for a single window due to the wall orientation. It's a good thing it's functionality works fine. For efficiency it's better in the absence of cooker hood extractor to have wall mounted heat extractor(expeller fans) on adjacent walls or a mix of both except one intends to use the commercial(industrial) type. At least you need one placed above the cooking unit.

My entry porch, dining and living room is an amazing 100sqm space with large windows overlooking a terrace. The only partition between the entrance porch/ante and the main lounge is the TV Wall which serves as a break point to redefine spaces.

I could use the same space to build a naija standard 2 bedroom apartment.
I just love great space with good work flow and air circulation.

People will try and discourage you but go for it bro, I did and it makes sense. They will say it's not our culture, no privacy, they will have to offer visitors food when they want to eat, the heat will be overwhelming, the smell of food will be everywhere etc but it has turned out well.

1. Plan very well and be particular about where you want every item in the kitchen even during construction.
2. Make room for cross ventilation by adding extra windows to eliminate heat, include an a/c and in my case, heat extractor fans which is efficient and not bogus like the hooded vents.
3. You guys have to be neat people. In my case, madam is more obsessed with cleanliness and everywhere is always spotless.
4. Because the kitchen is like a show off, the equipments, pots and furniture must be solid and should ideally compliment the space e.g all the gadgets are black and chrome and some upper cupboards have no doors to arrange plates, pots, flower vases etc.

Best of luck bro.
nice sweet words....
Just a few questions though
(1) Is your cooking unit on same wall you have that main window, ceiling window and mounted extractors or on an adjacent wall?
(2) Is there any other window in this kitchen apart from this on the pix and have you observed the direction of movement of external air(wind)?
(3) Does an AC in a kitchen have any role in removal of aromas/smells arising from cooking?

Thanks

There are kitchens and there’s well planned cooking space. What we have mostly in naija builds is a room with furnitures, cooking wares and sink.

A well planned kitchen must satisfy the following space planning requirements during design stage:

- cleaning/washing
- food preparation
- meal cooking/frying
- storage
- service area

Regardless of the design, your kitchen can only be successful when it is organized in a way to optimize performance and efficiency.
Your cooking/frying space must be equipped with hood and your design layout must allow for good ventilation.

If big restaurants can have open plan kitchen, I don’t see why we can’t have it at home.

_________

Unfortunately I don’t have pics but there’s a lovely concept I’ve seen in Oniru. The cooking/frying area of the well-spacious kitchen was at the far end corner of the room. The break-point has a frameless glass partition which protects the smelly odors from getting into the living area.

I wish I can do more but I’d try share the layout later here or on kobocity.com

________

Lastly don’t do this if your wife didn’t recommend or approve of it. Don’t do this for a village bae!
With a frameless glass partition it no longer becomes an open kitchen.

My problem here is ... I don't know how much longer I can wait before the case get settled.

It was because of twinskenny recommendation on this site that I involve this guy.. And I told him specifically from the site that all I want is result... Now that we didn't get the result.. Should he the recommender refund my money.. or I wait till the case that doesn't have an ending period..

My reasons for asking the above question is simple... Everyone including me can start recommending people and getting my commision even if I know the person won't deliver...

there should be rules on this forum on issue like this...
likewise.. I paid the recommended guy through the referrals account...

Do I need to bother myself with the police case or I should get refund from the referal..

I will respect everyone opinion here... anyone can be victim tomorrow... if truely we want credibility on forum...
Apologies for such thing.
So many hypocritical elements in this forum having different standards for different people and these people are the supposed foreign intellectuals that see themselves better than PMB and one even have the audacity to be disrespectful in speech. Anyone claiming to be of high morals should remain so and stop all this double standards.

Since the contractor have said his balance should be paid to enable him complete the job then the referee whose account received the initial payment should pay that balance to the contractor and upon completion of the job the client can pay the balance back to the referee.
Thanks.

It's called air vent, that's if you use GMP materials in doing it and letting space for airflow in and out of the building.
Basically it allows airflow if it's situated on the roofing part that stands in the direction of wind. But basically most Nigerian builds are not built putting such into consideration and it turns out to be for aesthetic rather than it's functional purpose.

Really? I have never heard of such. I have never seen such.
So far, we apply the roofing sheets immediately the wood work gets completed.
I will need to be educated on why roofing wood work needs to be left for a month or more before covering.

Uncleteeh(OAKGroup)
It's assumed that a good roof wood work is expected to last 6 months to direct atmospheric conditions in the absence of funds before installation of roofing sheets. Free from rot/wear/tear. This I have seen and not some classroom theory.

That is not to say a client is expected to wait that long. If there are no funds to commence both the roof wood work and aluminum sheets within the shortest possible duration in between then such job should be put on pause.

I guess incompetent contractor built the miami collapsed building. Maybe he also used substandard materials from Nigeria grin

I always laugh when I read stuffs here. The only thing we know about is cutting corners, corruption, substandard materials blah blah. We often dont think of environmental influence as a major cause of collapse.

When building regulations request for 9m setback for certain building, we often half it or even do whatever we like on site. For us, it is a waste of space. Those who requested for it must be stupid. They don't know how much they sell land in Lekki....

I have nothing less than 9m setback on 3 sides in my personal abode. Do you think I'd suffer same catastrophe as someone who had lesser setback? If there's fire outbreak, would I have issues like someone who manage to fit his building in 10m plot. What about vibrations? Think about standing waters - it can never get to my building. What about land subsidence? Is that a case of lack of competence?

I think you should read up more on causes of building collapse sir.

Miami building collapse: What could have caused it? https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57651025

__________

All I can say is that if my building collapse, hold me responsible because I don't take chances. Where there are no standards, I become the standard.

___________

Pics from The Contractor (Miami Building Collapse)
I did not do a follow up story on the Miami build.....but I do know there were investigations done on the build prior to this actual collapse. According to their investigation and report specific remediation work on the build was supposed to have been carried out but the authorities or management of the build did not heed to the advice.

Also not abiding to set back(s) be it 9m or 3m is not the reason behind building collapse. One of the purposes for setbacks is for utilities.

Exactly my point above!

The approach is what we call “fix-along-as-you-build” approach.

So you don’t expect such approach to fix anything. There’ll always be flooding, building collapse and failures because we failed to do things the right way.
There's nothing wrong with "fix along as you build" approach......as long as it's done right using the necessary information. I say this most especially for flood prone areas.
Flooding and earth moving equipments are not the reason for building collapse. As far as nigeria is concerned building collapse among many factors is as a result of using inexperienced hands/heads and cutting corners.
