codemaniacs:Like I said you are ignorant and uninformed. Who owns the $2b gained from tourism in your example? Is it the government that owns the hotels, the restaurants, the beaches the taxis they use? So if you do not tax the people that make money from tourists how does this $2b in tourism income translate to govt revenues besides visa fees? Does the foreigner come to Nigeria and say “Mr President please take $1000 as a tourist?” Or does he go to Aboki and change his $1000to Naira and his money disappears into the system? As for your second paragraph, you are again displaying your ignorance. That $10m is my money not the government’s. Like I said the only thing the government can do is to mandate that I repatriate the money at the official exchange rate and that I keep the money in a domicialry account. It is not their money. At the end of the year I will file my accounts and I will pay taxes to the government IN NAIRA! NONE OF THAT $10m belongs to or goes to the government. . All I do is add to the supply of forex in the country but it is not governments money!!! It means that because I have brought back $10m to the country, when you need forex there is more forex in the system and the price comes down. Nothing to do with government revenues. The government does not see 1cent of the $10m. We are talking about government revenues here not the economy. Like I said earlier do not comment on matters you do not understand. |
codemaniacs:Please don’t quote me to make ignorant uninformed comments. Tourism doesn’t bring money to any government. Tourism, exports, etc are just like any other industry. It is taxes on activities, employees etc that brings revenue. The income generated by the industry goes to the operators. If you don’t tax them you make nothing from it no matter how many foreigners come or how many goods you export. If I export $10m worth of goods, it is my money not the government’s. The most the government can do is say I repatriate my foreign income at the official rate and put in in a dom account. The money is not theirs!!! So how has my exporting $10m worth of good increased govt revenues? It is only when they tax me that they get revenue from my activities and even then, I will pay my taxes in Naira not in forex. The purpose of encouraging exports is to boost forex availability in the system, the money doesn’t belong to the government unless it is the government’s property that is being exported e.g oil or gas. You are confusing forex with taxes…go and learn basic economics. Govt revenue is from taxes. Exchange rate is from demand and supply of forex. The only reason govt gets a lot of forex from Oil is because govt owns the oil. Will the government own the tourism or the export industries…so why will any forex generated belong to them? Forex inflows determine exchange rates, govt taxes determine govt revenues. Unless you are proposing that government owns businesses the tourism and export sectors. Go and learn the difference between forex and government revenues or better still go and do a course in economics before commenting on matters above your pay grade. |

nedu666:Can you buy a new car with 10-20m a year? Ordinary new corolla is about N40m Like I said. It is not a lot of money when you think about it. People who make that still struggle. A lot of people make that just that it may not come at once or there are those e.g contractors or estate agents for whom they struggle for months without income and then they get 1 deal and that’s their income for the year. Like I said do not underestimate the informal sector. Look the other day I asked a girl who does POS how much do you make from this your business, she told me an average of N3k a day. Now don’t twist my words, I am not saying a POS operator is well off or comparing them to people making 10-20m a year but she makes 100k a month. Many low income government workers do not make 100k a month. Many drivers, cooks, and formally employed workers do t make 100k a month. So the point is don’t underestimate the informal sector. The mechanics, the spare parts sellers, the restaurant owners, the caterers etc That you are making 10-20m does not mean you aren’t struggling but there are millions who make that a year in the informal sector. In fact it is often said that if the informal sector is properly captured out GDP would be close to $1trillion already. There are many people who make 1m a month but you may not realize they do because as it comes in it goes out. It’s not like a salaried man who gets a lump salary every month. For example If you make average 50k a day in your informal sector business, you are making 12-15m a year but you won’t realize it because as you are making that 50k, day to day expense eat into it so you may not quite realize because what is left isn’t much. |
nedu666:You are the one who is delusional. The vast majority of the Nigerian economy is in the informal sector. Don’t underestimate people because they are not wearing a suit going to office. 10-20m a year is not a lot of money. You will be shocked how much these people make. Even if it is 5m you make a year you should pay taxes of 1m. 5m is 400k a month |
tsdarkside:Guy, stop looking at western nations for guidance in life. Copy copy is part of our problem in this country. They are they and we are we. Most of these people, cannot make the money they make in Nigeria anywhere but Nigeria. There is a difference between increasing the taxes of people who already pay taxes(abroad) and collecting taxes from people who don’t (Nigeria) |
tsdarkside:Read what I wrote again. I never said tax the poor. I specifically said many times the poor have no money to give. Is it people you are giving 25,000 monthly conditional cash transfer you want to tax? Which tax…from the CCt you are giving them that is barely enough to survive? There are millions of self employed people who make 10-20m a year for example that pay no taxes or pay token taxes. If you are making that amount of money, your tax should be between 2m and 4m. If you check the tax clearance if these people you will see 50k if you are lucky. These people are easy to identify by doing a BVN query on the database. And as far as poor, not everybody that looks poor is poor. Some mechanics make more money than the salaried workers that bear the brunt of our tax burden. I still remember when I was young and my father’s mechanic bought a brand new 505…his own. That’s not a poor man. |
tsdarkside:Trump wasn’t scared to tax the rich, the republicans have always been a party of low taxes…it is ideological. And there is a difference between taxing people who already pay taxes more and targeting people who don’t pay. |
tsdarkside:There is an economics to tax collection. They can’t target the poor because they have little to give if any, for the efforts/overheads required to get the tax out of them. It is the self employed of which there are many that don’t pay their fair share of taxes. The guy who sells spare parts that you are hailing for buildings big house is not a poor man and I can bet you he does not pay the right amount of taxes. The man who deals in haulage, the wholesale food seller, the government contractor, the landlord with multiple properties collecting rent, etc etc etc….most of these people only pay token taxes and many of them are very well off. A lot of them are richer than the salaried workers who bear the brunt of our tax burden because they are deducted at source. It is easy to target these people because all you need to do is target their BVNs. See who is paying N10m-46m duty to clear a car, who is buying 1st class or business class tickets, whose account turnover is above a certain amount etc etc . We can leverage technology to know who isn’t paying taxes. |
seunmsg:Somebody that chopped campaign money will spend money on lawyers? |
tsdarkside:That’s the real problem. I am sure 90% of those in the National Assembly do not pay their fair share of taxes. I remmember during confirmation Akpabio was shocked when he saw the tax clearance of Audu from Kogi. Clearly he wasn’t use to his fellow politicians paying their true taxes. But he is a minority. I don’t know how you can declare assets to CCB and they won’t ask where is your tax paid commensurate with this level of wealth. In other countries if you have money and you haven’t paid taxes you live a low profile so the tax man doesn’t target you. |
tsdarkside:We can double our tax revenues without the poor. The people who really pay taxes in this country and Salaried workers and companies. Most self employed do not pay their fair share of taxes. There are also a lot of taxes that are not being paid. Just see how much Wike raised in Abuja in 1 month when he asked Abuja. Residents to pay their ground rents. There are many leakages all over the place without targeting the poor. In most countries the rich pay 80% of the taxes. In Nigeria, the rich and the middle class do not pay the right amount of taxes. The problem we have though is a structural one. We have a disproportionate amount of poor people. Poor people have no money to pay taxes and need the most services from government. |

nairalanda1:I agree 100% it is awful. South Africa spends more on education than our entire federal budget. Export only affects forex and hence currency value it makes no real difference to revenues. Our gdp is larger than SA. The redesign they have a higher budget is because they collect more taxes. If we collected more taxes even without exporting we would have more revenue and higher budget. |
nairalanda1:1.Algeria doesn’t produce 4 times the oil we produce. They actually produce a lot less than us. Their official OPEC quota is half that of Nigeria. 2. Those figures for Nigeria are actually wrong because they are federal budget and don’t include states. If you include states it is more like $65b 3: It is not about diversified economy, Nigeria is actually a very diversified economy., it is about the fact that Nigerians do not pay the same levels of taxes as in these countries and we tend to generate most of govt revenue from oil royalties…though this is changing . Whereas other countries generate most of their monies from taxes. |
KingOfAllIgbos:I. The same way if you settle someone in government today, tommorow a principled person like Wahab, ElRufai or Wike will come and demolish your illegal structure. So when you build illegally, you will always live in fear. I have yet to see anyone on social media post his building approval or cofo. Because they know how they procured what they have if they have anything. |
If you have seen houses that have been destroyed and the sickness that has been caused by Stillwater as a result of the flooding caused by people erecting houses built illegally on water drainage routes, you will have no pity for those caught up in the demolitions. If you bought a ready built home in an estate, sue the developer. If you built yourself then you knew what you were doing was illegal. If you think you have legitimate papers sue the government. This thing is not by noise or propaganda. |
Beremx:That is like saying because you have been driving without papers and nobody stopped you it is wicked if suddenly lastma suddenly mounted a checkpoint and starts asking motorists for papers. The way you people think and your victim mentality is staggering. You commit illegalities and still blame the govt. What is wrong is wrong, the fact that you are getting away with it doesn’t make it right. Every day for the thief one day for 5e owner. You think only of yourselves and your houses, you forget the thousands of other residents who have complied with the law whose houses and properties are destroyed by flooding caused by your illegalities. You forget the people who get sick because water does not drain properly. |

Mindlog:But he knows when to use “do” and “does” in a sentence. |
GloriousGbola:This is the correct answer. Getting on a motorcycle in Lagos traffic was like flying to your destination both in terms of speed and the wind hitting you as you ride. MKO Abiola was once got out of his car In traffic to get on a motorcycle because he was late and it became headline news. |
Prigidypogodo:Those shouting rigging Those shouting judiciary Those shouting INEC Those shouting one party state Those shouting Obi is the savior If and when they decide to engage whatever is left of their brains, they will realize 2 things 1: PDP is and has always been an indisciplined party that was handed power in 1999 and relied on rigging to remain in power. As soon as yaradua /GEJ started to implement electoral reforms, rigging became more difficult and they struggled to remain in power. They are a party of impunity, selfish interests and are not democrats. They don’t know how to build a party because they did not have to build their party. They were anointed by the military with a military mindset. 2: the real effect of Obi leaving PDP is to condemn the remnants of the PDP to a life of opposition for the foreseeable future. Obi has boxed himself into a corner, he can’t move forward and he can’t go backwards. He can’t win an election as president even with PDP support and he can’t step down as president to be Vp to PDP. This was exactly what caused them to split to begin with. They are stuck. Obi has taken his votes away from PDP and can’t go back without losing the facade of credibility. Selfishness, lack of strategic thinking, impunity , lack of internal democracy in the PDP is what is playing out in the opposition PDP whether Core PDP, Obi, Atiku Kwakwanso. If you look at At the actors, they have all defected at least twice, showing they are not loyal party men and therein lies the problem. They will point fingers at INEC, judiciary and APC for creating a one party state but. Is it APC that forced PDP to flout a court order in Plateau? Is it APC that made PDP violate its own constitution and give the ticket to North? Is it APC that forces Obi out of PDP, Kwakwanso out of PDP, G5 out of PDP? PDP got 14.7m votes in 2023, APC got 8.7m. Democracy worked, the people spoke with their votes but PDP lost because they can’t keep their house in order. Obi Kwakwanso, Atiku are all PDP. Nigerians voted for PDP but APC is in power because PDP cannot put its house in order…not because of INEC, not because of Judiciary, not because of one party state, not because of rigging! |

dinkyicon:If you did due dligence they won’t be pulling down your house so clearly there are many people with more money than sense. |
jaxxy:Stop pretending as you don’t know civil servants are crooks. And don’t put words into my mouth. I said it is possible ( I am speculating) that a civil servant sold land (legally) knowing you can’t build on the land. Even if you have a c of o you cannot have a legitimate building permit over drainage/canal. Bottom line is that you have seen that you need permits from the MOE to build near canals and evacuation drainages. You cannot build in such a place and claim you didn’t know it was a drainage/canal. Like I said if you have a legitimate c of o, your problem is with the agency that issued it to you, go and meet them. If you have a legitimate building permit over drainage/canal go and meet the agency that issued it to you….simple. Wike said: in Abuja there are plots of land that have 5 different CofOs! It will be interesting to see of all the many homes demolished how many can actually with full chest challenge the LASG. If your papers are legit, just get a lawyer. Abi? The commissioner for environment is a lawyer, he worked for one of the top law firms in Nigeria. He is telling you with chest on TV, not once, not twice, if you claim to have papers, go and meet the person who gave you papers, what does that tell you? He knows you have no leg to stand on. He knows 1) you don’t have any papers, 2) whatever papers you have ( if you have) you must have committed some illegality to obtain it. 3) your papers are forged. |
jaxxy:I don’t see what the problem is, The commissioner said if you have valid documents go and meet the people or ministry that gave you, your problem is with them. As far as ministry of environment is concerned, dra8nages and canals are their territory and they didn’t give you clearance/ permit and therefore you have no permission to build. What I suspect is this: Some people bought land from the govt or agents either knowing it was illegal or were unknowingly scammed. Some crooked civil servants sold the land knowing you cant get approval to build on it. It is like I have a car that is problematic and will never work but you insist on buying it from me, or my mechanic who knows the car won’t work scams you and buys the car from me to sell you you. If that is the case go and meet the person who gave you c of o. That however is different from building permit. To actually erect a structure on a drainage channel, you must have been involved in illegality as the homeowner because you clearly do not have a MOE permit. You cannot claim not to know you are building on a drainage channel and you can’t claim you don’t know the requirements. |
jaxxy:Oga c of o is not a buIlding permit. As you can see from the law it is very clear in black and white, you cannot obtain a building permit without permission from the ministry of environment. As the commissioner said boldly on TV, if you have a legitimate c of o go and meet the person that gave you. Even If it is legt (which I doubt). C of o is not permission to build. |
jaxxy:Yes they do. Building a house is not only about having building plan. There are a series of permits/ steps you need to build a house. One of them if your land in near a canal drainage or water front is an environmental/ drainage permit from the minustry of environment. None of these houses have them because he ministryvof environment will never give you a permit to build on a drainage channel go and verify. The commissioner said it boldly show your drainage permits….till date I have not seen any bulldozed homeowner that has shown a drainage permit. He said it boldly on TV as far as his ministry is concerned you don’t have a permit. If you say you have building plan or c of o, go and meet the people that gave you cof o of building plan. As far as he is concerned drainage/ canals are his territory. His ministry is the only one authorized to give permits to build around drainage channels. If somebody gave you building permit to build on drainage channel , go and meet the person that gave you. But you cannot get a building permit on a drainage setback without permits from the ministry of environment. See 12 and 15 below.
