ajigiteri:I think the folks at the feed shop might be able to help. Of course, it depends on the type of birds and stage of development or life. My partner does all that but the feed mill he goes to is very accommodating and they store his past formulas and help him based on what they have in stock. Do a search here - there has been posts on the topic |
Dear house, What is the general thought on limiting feeding for Broilers? Is it just kobo-wise naira foolish? This issue has arisen mainly because buyers have disappointed (could a deliberate ploy to bring price down) and Cash flow is now an issue... My partner has decided that we ration the feed - something like feeding them at 65-70 %; basically two meals instead of three on an equivalent for humans. The initial thought was to sell at 6 weeks but now into the 8th week, we still have a lot to shift. We also started a new batch - money is tight... We are now looking at the Easter holiday sales but with limiting feeding, I suspect only 25% might achieve target market weight of about 2.5 kg. Dilemma! |

I have read in many places that a lost passport is always an issue... It invariably involved Abuja - why for God's sake? Do they not have a National computerised system to prevent duplication of passports? Moreover, why has it taken 2 months to do a basic check on a passport that has expired 2 years ago? 55k is what they asked for. The same contact and office where I did the original passport. And they also wanted me to go to Abuja to capture to speed things up... All that expense! |
What the hell is going in this country? Why is this issue not being picked up by journalists, the Press, and the two houses as well as the many social and activists critics and talk shows? 2 months after parting with #50,000 to renew a lost but expired passport,bi have had no joy, no confirmation from Abuja and no data capture... Na wa o! How long does it take to do a data check.on a computer? This is a national tragedy! An absolute disgrace from a country that claims it is big and developing. They make money from the farce that is '5 years expiration' on passport but they still will not deliver a good service or even make more money by being efficient. About £250 for a bloody visa! |
Nja Lives Matter! |
why the long story or conjecture? he has implicated himself by taking the goods out before payment or full payment... it is that simple. he could have told them to reserve the phones for him; even tell them who he is if necessary. but take 8 iphones7 out to go and collect money - from where? was he packed in front of the shop? on the other hand, how could he get away with it - bet they have cctv and he is a known figure; confused? |
IMPO, unless you are going to use an extractor system, the kitchen will need at least 2 windows to prevent kitchen smells wafting into the lobby and all over. |
Why are people so defeatist? Yes, the whole thing should be investigated and why not? The gunpowder residue might be more of CSI and Tv detective stuff but I am sure we have the technology; only problem is that some time has passed... However, all those police officers deployed to that area can be subject to internal investigation and a timely inspection of their weapons will be useful and if there is some sort of accountability, a bullet count might also yield result but I doubt such an account of bullet acquired and discharged is kept... This policeman has to be taken off the street and out of the force. If this OP is the son of a politician or a white foreigner you will see quick action. |
akreest:Done! It is already on their Tweeter feed... |
What a terrible post - this man almost got killed in a lawless country and you are slamming him for not returning. Do you want him dead first before he can take action. Live today fight another day! By the way, he has made moves and has complained and the Police are trying to dismiss the incident. They tweeted that his injury must have been from a pellet gun - no sirs. He was injured by the shattered glass from his car window - that is obvious to me and the bullet hole is clearly visible; so not a pellet gun. Can we please now flood the Police Complaint Tweeter handle with our sympathies for this citizen. Check: https://twitter.com/PoliceNG - the story is there already https://twitter.com/PoliceNG_PCRRU |
agricexport:Where is the accusation? The word is 'possible'... You will not get very far with your prosecution - so do not fret and get on with your business, whatever you claim it is. * There is no point trolling me - I am just a contributor and observer on an internet forum; whereas you have something to sell, so it is you that should provide more public details... |

To die because of cannabis in these day and age is a real waste. Why we in Nigeria are still prosecuting people for using cannabis is also unfathomable - hemp or marijuana is now a growth industry and it is becoming more and more legal in a few states in the US. However, to traffic cannabis to a country that has a death penalty is really stupid - exactly how much money is involved to risk and waste his life. And it is almost impossible to say that he is not aware he is carrying many kilograms of cannabis. Law is law but these East Asian law on cannabis is an Ass. |
agricexport:I prefer openness! If your company is not ready to publish a catalogue or have a website then I am not interested in doing business with possible scammers. There is no need to contact privately to do any business - not for me. I can afford to buy a Tractor but I will rather go to a dealer where I can see the goods. Goodbye and stop wasting people's time! |
agricexport:Just two post before mine - mikolo asked for the price and others have also done so. Do you not operate a fixed price or at least a reasonable range for such a large equipment. If you are a reputable supplier with a depot or an office then we should be able to come and check the products out there and then but it will be much easier to just give us the price of each item so that everyone can know. So why don't you attach a price to a picture or give us something like a catalogue? What other Agricultural equipment do you stock - I mean big imported item? |
Is this a Biology class or something else You are indeed being scientific about your experience but this is good advertisement for you - it would be if you were selling online or supplying to good supermarkets. There are programmes like this in the UK -trying to connect people to where their food comes from. Organic food items are more expensive and desirable to more and more people that can afford them and those that are fed up of the chemically induced food... I really like your style - even the cooking is not deep fried as most nja people like to cook chicken. |
Why is it so hard for most advertisers in Nja to give the price of the items they wish to sell? Most things in Nja is shrouded in sort sort of secrecy and deliberate attempt to keep good information from ordinary folks. The Banks are even worse! |
organicfoods:Why do you want to find out what is in the carcass? You mean you look forward to enjoying the fruit of your labour... ; ![]() For the age, the size is impressive! |
jfkenny:Turks is experienced and yes I think you can have 81 birds in 12*12 - easy: They are broilers and their only purpose in life is to fatten up and get to the market on time - that is the life of the Broiler breeds; not fair but we humans consume a lot of meat. See the way Oyinbos rear Broilers below: (note they are rarely if ever sold as Live birds, slaughtered, eviscerated, package and chilled or frozen... And they are heavily drugged and pumped with high protein feed and supplements.
|
Turks:You seem to have a different experience to kayo80 who now wants to go into producing thousands of Noilers. Your experience is however valid in that those venturing into Noilers should be aware of the pitfalls. I did say hardier (according to those that know) and you can see it in the way they look more like free range birds. If 'Cocci' is the one major issue to overcome then they are still hardier than Broilers - right? ![]() |
Yoshy:She was joking and it is funny to me... And it will be hard work and a very ambitious project especially for someone who has just raise about 102 birds. I think 1000 birds per month is too many; how about 100-200 to start and then expand? He needs to research the market - possibly he should have a contract with a buyer before starting... And then there is the Labour cost involved and the need for constant electricity. Do ordinary Nja like to buy frozen chicken? |
good luck |
jfkenny:Please bros, I am all for going organic - I salute people that are trying; yourself and organicfoods. To be honest, I like your birds and I do not see much to worry about: they look really healthy to me and the fact that you have managed to sell some to market people before maturity should tell you that you are doing something right. I think being new in the business is what is giving you anxiety - you are successful already! It could just be the breed of chicken; some mature and gain ultimate weight a little bit later than others - sometimes the amount of feed will not be that significant because they get to that weight when they are due, not by force. * But can you understand that Noilers will be better if you want to go organic (less drugs and more movement)? Noilers are hardy (hardier) breeds to start with so they will need less drugs/supplements. |
jfkenny:I am now beginning to think that raising Broilers organically is not exactly compatible... I think the breeds of Broilers that you have bought is so important to their development and weight gain and Broilers are not really natural birds so to speak. The added complication of trying to be organic might be counter-productive. I think the organic way including giving the chicken more room is best suited to Noilers but then you know that noilers take longer to get the desirable market weight of Broilers and they might not even get to the top weight even with constant feeding. The thing with Broilers is to give them less space, feed them lots including artificially like giving them 16-20 hours light and then pump them with drugs to counteract the effect of cooping them up. With the right breed, right clean environment, good feed and general care they should be ready in 10-14 weeks and you sell them off and sanitise the whole place. jkenny, I think your birds look fine on the surface of things - it looks like they have a lot of room to move compared to 'organicfoods'. With that in mind, your feed might probably be wasted (scattered) rather than being totally consumed. I don't know about the Brown poo but you should be able to see whether they are healthy or not by their lively attitude, brightness and wanting to feed. I probably will not worry too much about the poo - especially since you are giving them drugs/supplement - they do react to them as well. Moulting is natural and I do not see severe moulting in your pictures - the feathers will likely grow back. However, moulting can also be a problem but with the age and size of your birds, it will not matter too much as they will all be sold soon. But, I will worry if they start going bald with blotches (that will encourage parasite if they are not there already) or if they are removing their own feathers (lack of protein or nutrient). Water intake is also a factor to take into consideration - no excuse not to give them enough water. If you want them to gain weight, restrict their movement and feed them late into the night... Spend time to observe them closely! |
I can understand the comments about wanting heavy chickens and that weight matters with Broilers. However, I am not in Nigeria and even if I were in Nigeria, I will prefer a healthier chicken with less fat content and ones that had been reared in a freer environment. I might not know the market but I have reared Broilers before - in my teens, and family has had large numbers of layers; also dabbled in Turkey, Geese and Rabbits. If I were selling birds that have been slaughtered and frozen* then their looks might not matter. But what I am seeing is that the birds are losing feathers - that must be some sort of condition that is affecting them; broilers do tend to suffer from all sorts and that is why they are given all them drugs and supplements. Taking birds that are almost bald** with blotches to the normal market for live birds will definitely encourage some people to want to pay less or wonder what sort of conditions they have been raised - but, this is Nigeria, it is different. This is a personal preference! Not taking anything away from the good work these folks are doing - not at all; and I wish them well! * We raised Broilers in the days when Electricity was almost constant in Ibadan and we had people coming to buy frozen chicken with or without gizzard, I became very good at slaughtering... For those that know where Moor Plantation is then you might know my link with Animal Husbandry. ** Exposed skin of the birds might be signs of disease or something and it further encourages parasites - the feathers are there for a purpose not just for show as in the Cockerel... |
organicfoods:You are right about me not following the thread carefully... I thought the original OP is jfkenny. I was comparing jkkenny's birds to yours (organicfoods). * Still good job for trying some sort of organic and not having to give them all those supplements and drugs and so on... I was not expecting full free range but at least more room for the birds but this is a start and your birds are broilers to start with. |
Yes, lots of meat but you can see the difference in the quality through the way they stand, walk, their body shape (low to the ground cos of fat and weight compared to bore density), their skin (giants with feathers missing already at 6 weeks) and the cleanliness of the birds. Are the organic ones going to be more expensive or people will want to pay less because they are smaller; if so, that is a pity! |
Thanks guys! This is what happens when someone dies 'Intestate' and the family is scatter scatter all over the place... We are a small unit, thank god; not a polygamous family, but we are not as close as we could be... It is more the ignorance and the sell now, spend now and come asking for money from those that have a bit that is a major concern... I think the solution is to divide the land and every can do what they please with their share; rather than those in nja using all sort of excuses to sell off and use the money for other family projects that essentially benefits about 1/3. It is hard to fight ignorance and superstition and/or so-called tradition - it is even more disappointing when you have a family of graduates and higher college leavers behaving like that! Nja has changed - religious fundamentalism everywhere and people are so muddled and un-progressive in many ways. |
I just wanted to know whether anyone has heard of people saying that it is not right to buy your father or mother's land - it sound pants to me but different folks for different strokes... |
dangotesmummy:I am not superstitious or religious but my family is definitely religious and the superstitious part is a new one to me - very frustrating as I am not there to always sort things out - they seems to take advice from the village and elder types that always have their noses in other people's business. It is not easy with families and the subject itself is not that easy - they do have to agree but as it seems the ones in Nja just seems to go ahead and do stuff - and often it is irreversible... I can easily tell them I will buy all the land but since I am entitled to some of the land myself as part of the family it is complicating... It will not be quite the prodigal son scenario, but it might be tasteless and it might mean having to distribute the land and then buying them off the ones that want the cash... However, it is more the selling off and reducing the stock; leaving smaller units that might not be of much use in future - no need to build to live as there are enough properties in the village to live. The other thing I am trying to impress on them is that the land is an investment that is better than having cash in the bank or shares and once sold that money is quickly spent and then what? |
kayo80:You are a fountain of knowledge - kudos! Good luck with your birds... I will surely buy Noilers before considering Broilers these days. I currently live in the UK and the chicken we eat here are just a lump of white, fatty, not very tasty, heavily drugged and water pumped mess. You need a lot of spices and condiments to make them into a good meal or snack. Good job folks! |
