] davidylan: that is why it is especially important that each christian be conversant with the bible rather than relying on pastors. There is no such nonsense found in the bible. Judas was the treasurer of the disciples while brother Thomas was a confirmed doubter YET we know how both ended.
When the bible talks of "laying up for urselves treasures in heaven" it doesnt mean volunteer work at your local redcross or your church. Of course it is good to help out in church, during the time i served in Nigeria i was a member of the choir and bible study group . . . it helped me immensely in my personal work with God. Those who couldnt be a part of the various fellowship departments for personal reasons werent any worse off. unfortunately bible study group is not an organised dept.i love bible study as it does improve one's walk with God. |

game_rod: It is true, you have to belong to a group or you are not serving God publicly, open service is a requirement, not a closed service, you grab? Service is not just going to sit down and bench warm, you have to also serve the Lord with your might, either become a driver, a sunday school teacher, part of the people who tidy up the chuch before or after service, you just have to belong to a group. So i just have to even when my spirit does not lead me to? so that i can publicly show that i am serving God?Does public service then equal true service?please i am not in anyway castigating workers because i know Nlanders and their anaylis, they wiil start saying that i said being a worker in church is bad, am just saying that i do not want to join the organised structure. |

don't you know that sex and foking in the church is now the order of the day? with your backside like that of satan, many brother tamedus in the church will be examinig the size of your po ssie in their head during the preaching session, so, the only way to avoid this is to join a department, there you can realy see cute guys, become close to them, and indeed fulfil you life long dream of foking one of the greatest looking dudes in the world - yin grab? No I dont grab. @ other posters, thanks for ur contributions.I have just realised as i have grown in my faith is that the church is one place where you sometimes have to have the conviction to stand your ground on issues(esp if u study the word and see that ur in right standing, have learnt always to seek what the bible says and not always rely on my pastor said) but boy is it hard.At least once a month, there are sermons, directly or indirectly attacking those who dont belong to a dept, with words like'if u dont deposit in the bank acct of heaven, how can u withdraw from' and so many other talks to make those if us who dont belong to depts feel alienated and less holy. I have a passion working with teenagers as i can relate with them being that i made alot of mistakes back then which i feel counselling would have made an imapct.I therefore want to reach out to these youths and be a role model they can actually relate to it without all the adult, holier than thou airs and forgive me if i feel that 'working' in church is not the only way to make an imapact in on them and society as a whole. There are so many things that i feel should be between u and ur God and are turned into objects of showing off and seeking approval from the elders. This something i am trying to avoid esp as some church people always get all up in ur business so as to have a topic for the next gossip session.I have a few friends in church prob 2 or 3 and i intend to keep it that way. This does not mean that i bear grudges with anyone, love everyone with the love of God,just dont want to be caught up in the whole hierachy, backbiting, holier than thou attitudes that i have managed to observe from far. |

oh ye of little faith! If I do get a mortgage I don't intend to spend 30 years paying it off, I'll achieve that sooner by God's grace with wise planning and prudence. I do get your drift though, have a good plan for repaying not thinking 'it's only $600 per month'.
The key is understanding the system - living in the UK/US with naija mentality will be unwise. While you don't swallow everything hook line and sinker, you do need to make the system work for you and benefit where you can, while using any good traits you learned in naija to improve on your lot in a foreign land.
PS - Not like busy_body wey just dey collect government money anyhow o!
Although you can just fashi and declare bankcruptcy, wait for 5 years (or how long is it?) for it to be wiped off your record and start borrowing again!
I repeat - understand the system and make it work to your advantage.
For example: Don't wait till you have £200,000 to buy a house while dashing money away to a landlord all in the name of 'I hate borrowing money' or 'I want to pay cash for my house'. That mentality keeps some guys in rented homes for decades when they could've paid for their own homes.
Don't depend on family members! Nothing ruins such relationships more than money issues - keep family bonds strictly that, not financial, if you can help it that is.
Be patient! DON'T be in any rush to 'prove' to those in naija that you've arrived. No one will repay your credit card bill for you because you blew $2000 just to 'show off' for Christmas. People get debt recovery at their doors and start denying their own names because of gbese. 'Looking for Segun? Erm no oh, he is in Nigeria on vacation, he will be back next year. I am his cousin Olu'
AVOID borrowing to people! This is a personal thing - anything I can 'give' I will - i.e, if you don't return it, my life will still go on. There's nothing worse than chasing people around for money when it is crucial for you to use it. a crucial lesson that my hubby learnt in a very HARD way.he has learnt now sha,the guy used to be a sucker for 'problem' stories.and yeah, trying to show off to those in naija is disatrous. thank God me i dont know people i have to show off to |

Before anyone attacks me about not having the holy spirit, i do.Its just that i have had the opportunity to work with so many people in church and have realised that since it is also a gathering of humans, there tends to be so much hypocrisy and politics(ie sis lagbaja said this, bro tamedu did thatetc).I work with the teeenagers and also volunteer for some other duties but i do not want to join a dept.Reason being i have been there and i dont want to be invovled in all the stuff that goes with that again. My main purpose of going to my Father's house is to seek and serve him and i dont want to be distracted by all the politics that goes on(believe me it is worse than the parliamnet). This made me make up my mind to seek God and not humans in my new church(just moved to join my hubby).
The thing is everyone in church is beggining to look at me like a sinner,I had someone call me aside yesterday to start lecturing me on why i MUST join a dept.I told him, that i feel it should be something the spirit leads you to do and that i did not have that leading.I pointed out to him that i volunteered on stuff and that i really wanted to expand on working with teenagers, but he just kept on going on and on about me becoming a worker.I really wanted to tell him to lay off me but trust people to start saying i insulted a deacon.I am in a dilemma.Pls does not joining a department in church make you a sinner and not being spirit filled? Why do they make it seem like the only way that the only way you can serve God is by being a worker?I know workers who are workers in church but their life outside of church is ahem, |

My advice for those who are abroad . . . arm yourself with as much degrees and work experience that will stand you way above your peers in Nigeria. While doing that please and please look for business connections in Nigeria. Its a waste of time thinking you can live on your foreign salary alone. After a few years get a good job possibly in a foreign company in Nigeria . . . there are many and go back home to live in peace. I don't fancy spending 30yrs paying mortgage on a home that wont ever be mine. @above quote from Davidylan, agree with you whole heartedly.and as for the bolded part,me sef no understand o prefer the brick laying naija style.but people have started getting mortages in naija too sha.but trust naija banks u will put down 50% of the money so the repayments are quite manageable.would rather be paying mortage on my property back home than one 2/2 house here. as at this morn, the pound is equivalent to 146 naira and still falling :' see me doing shakara when it was 182 .But as others have said the good news is that people in nigeria can start sending money to us here.Me too i will start flashing my sis,my aunty and my cousins so they will starte sending me western union. |

tos: Moves - Thanks for your post. Sorry for not responding earlier as i've been going to the library to study. Clearly, i'm in a discussion with intelligent people and surely agree with what Moves said. It can be easier for you here as you don't have to know an uncle to get a decent job.
Debosky - My argument is that other people have done the same thing I did and have also come out successful. They even achieved what I did in a shorter time. If I had been privy to the information I have now when I just came to the UK, I am sure it would have been a different ball game. It is the lack of sufficient information about the UK job market that usually break people when they come to the UK. I was advised by a former colleague to take up a voluntary job when I just got to the UK to game some UK experience but I refused as I didnt want to do any work for anybody for free (a typical Nigeria mentallity). But most people are taking that path now and they are making it. A former junior in my university days even asked if I can set her up somewhere on a voluntary job for few months to enable her get some good UK references just yesterday. She even told she doesnt mind paying to have the experience for three months. I heard that some institutions like Kaplan, BPP, LCA, etc now collect money from people to find voluntary work for them.
The argument is that people are now realising the importance of taking up voluntary work when they get to the UK as no employer will be willing to take you up without having some decent experience in the UK.
By and large, I am not advising any body to relocate to the UK or any other western country at this point. The credit crunch is really having its bites on the ecomomies of these countries right now. I understand that the UK economy may not recover at all from the recession in 2009. But the job market may start picking up slowly in the third quarter of the year (2009). If you are applying for any tier 1 visa at this time, it is better to put it on hold until the economy start opening up a bit. And going by yesterday's news it is already heading in the form a full blown depression as there are some more jobs being cut by big names like credit suisse, citibank etc.Pls and pls do not relocate to the UK at the moment it is not a good idea. Na God go help we wey dey here for now. |

@ luca
but you and i know the type of people that actually sell their votes. They really know no better. They feel that if this person gets elected they will not see him again as our polticians tend to become self absorbed and forget those who brought them into power. So their mindset is let me just kuku collect my share of the cake now before i dont see him again. My dad ran for elective office twice,so i have seen this things first hand and i know what i am talking about.I remember numerous arguments my dad had with his grassroots leaders about this bags of rice, goat syndrome but they just felt he was being stingy(after already spending loads on the campaign as it is). They used to complain and say 'gbobgo grammar yi ko lafeje'meaning it is not this grammar we will eat .So it really was a if u cant beat them join them option at least you will recoup when you get to office. This was a standard and principle my dad never broke and this kinda never really got him far. There were so many other candidates like him,but never seem to get far in the Nigerian system,i agree that campaigns need money but that does not excuse politicians going along because they feel they will recoup when they get to office. If ALL candidates refuse to give out these gifts, then that will be a level playing ground and then mandates and manifetsos will be the issue,But as it is now,if you dont give bags of rice someone else will,so how is that a fair palying ground?
You and i know better and that is why we will not sell our votes. No one will make me vote for a candidate i dont believe in,even my parents.I remember in 1999,my dad was trying to talk me into voting for Funsho Williams cos he was a personal friend ,and i refused because i did not believe in the values of the platform he was contesting under. My dad stopped trying to persuade me as he was even impressed that i was able to stand my ground. He respected my views and confided that he shared my views but was just being a little sentimental as he did not think he should have contested on that platform as well.So the reason why you and i know this is because we are enligtened, how many of the nigerian electorate actually are? |

lucabrasi: yes but who do you blame for that, the leaders might have a large percentage of the blame but we nigerians including me and you sitting down abroad have a large part as well, please i urge you to read a book dr li's account of mao zedong's life(he was mao's personal physician and he chronicled mao's life, politics and everything they went through, the corruption in china then was times 10 of what we have in nigeria now, more than 3 million people died as a direct result of famine talk less of indirect result, government officials were taking bribes of rolex qrist watches to post people to nice jobs,YET mosyt chinese left very good jobs in australia, europe america and went back to their country not minding the suffering they endured,i promise you if u read that book you will have a different perspective of the situation in nigeria.
as for your dad,i totally and unequivocally agree with you but imagine if people like your dad were given a chance irrespective of what any godfather said?who dyu think has majority of the fault there if not we nigerians, look at oshiomole,he went against people like tony anenih, igninedian machinery e.t.c and the people line up behind him even though he didnt spend the amount of money these guys spent, why are we blaming corrupt leaders when we refuse to vote people like your dad in because"they r not dropping paper"and will mortgage ours and our children's future for 100 naira notes and a bowl of rice? remember how much a politician spends is directly proportionate to how muchg he has to recover when he gets into power, its not just nigeria its happening in italy presently, if we want our votes to count then we should stop getting paid for our votes and vote our conscience, in a country of almost 150million people with less than 10% as corrupt politicians,if we all stood together like nigerians did during abiola hope 93,refusing to collect bribes the leadership will back down.
look at adedibu, the main reason he could count on these legions of people to do his bidding his because of daily amala and their believe in him, whgy can't we translate that to credible leaderrs being voted in? if we have refused to do that, then we shouldnt blame anyone but ourselves if we continually allow a tiny minority to rule over and rape us, look at the uzoma okere thing, remember when nigerians shouted with one voice, yar adua listenend and took action remember the 86 billion or so rice import, they listened and cut it down to around 10billion same as the child witches thing they listened even ribadu s cirtificate scandal,as soon as nigerians started shouting yar adua released a statement sayn they shoul;d release the man's certificate I understand you and my dad spent alot of time talking to the grassroots not to mortgae the future of their children for 500 naira but the truth is the people are hungry and they can really not see further than voting for the one who gave them 500 naira for a pot of stew than the one who is speaking all this 'big' english.Unfortunately, even the party that is supposed to be on the left(mentioning no names) actually sometimes plays this dirty politics.where it suits them.My dad was a member of this party and this the party seen as the progressive one,but in the deeper party workings and all,it is all the same. Adams Oshiomole probably had an edge because of his history as former labour leader and so had alot of popularity to his advantage. My dad was more of an academic. I hope the mindset changes and i am ready in the near future to go back home and indeed not let my dad's legacy die(he used to say he wanted to create an impact like baba Jakande hismentorthat would live after him yrs after he was gone)Pity death came calling too soon.He was writing a book about the inner workings of politics in lagos state and we hopefully hope to get it published as soon as possible.Talking about him and the nigerian situation brings tears to my eyes .But it is well.We will get there someday. |

lucabrasi: @bawomolo and damiso asia DID EXPERIENCE WHAT NIGERIA IS GOING THROUGH, ill use china as an example because it ll be hard for many to believe,if you have not read any of china's history then go through china pre-mao zedong and see if the situation wasnt worse than nigeria's, then go read during mao's reign and the conflicts china had with their supposed protector stalin and kruschev, asia didnt start in a day and they have had more than 100 years to make their mistakes and go through what we are going through now,if you think abacha, and nigerian politicians enjoyed then go read about the corruption and enjoyment the china politburo were up to even in a supposed communist government, to get a good posting regional leaders had to be bribed with rolex wrist watches, money e.t.c
same as india and the conflicts they have had all through to the time they split with pakistan going their own way, up untill now millions are still suffering in india, go see pictures of calcutta ghettoes ad compare it to ghettoes in nigeria, there is wide spread corruption amongst their leaders as well, same as pakistani the opposition leader in pakistan just got back from exile this year accused of what?CORUPPTION yet he is still walkn around freely same as the late benazir bhutto was accused of corruption but was back from exile and would have been the pakistani president
they are not in the same place because they have had much more time to make their mistakes and their citizens are much more patriotic, go back and check what year india got independence i agree with you but you must agree that it is very difficult for the average nigerian to feel patrotic when they see that the people supposed to be leading us seem to have only their selfish interests at Heart. That is why the average nigerian has the mindset of 'everyman for himself',God for us all. make me sef get there chop my own national cakeI will talk about this from a personal point of view.My Dad(lost him a month ago ) was someone who had the highest level of principles i have ever seen and he went into politcs with a sincere desire to actually change things.am talking of someone who used to run a political paper back in UI in the 70's.You know what?he never seemed to be able to break through the satus quo and in turn was often found in oppossing camps beacuse of his principles. This principle even translated to him not being rich.He was always trying to inculcate this beliefs into his children.i admired this alot as a kid,BUT as i grew older i started thinking that he was kind of rigid( i now appreciate him more). That is because his peers who unlike him just had to attain power at any costs were getting political offices and appointments which in turn made them uhmm uhm 'finacialy well off'.i started to resent his principles because people saw him as a joke, infact we (my siblings, i and my mom) were forever critisicing him because we just could not see the gains of this his so called 'principles' principle lafe je ni.He held on to those principles till he died but was unable to actually get into power and make a direct difference to the country. Now tell me,if my brother wanted to get into politics he would actually go against those principles(seeing that my dad never actually got far) and do whatever it takes to get to power. There are so many people directing the affairs of our country at the moment which i have had the priviledge of meeting at a personal level and please if that is the best we can do hmm,i think the beautiful ones are not yet born because the coming generation is not any better i think we are even worse. . But all said and done,my view is subjective and based on personal experiences,we might actually get there sooner if the mindset of the nigerian can be reoriented to think 'servant' rather than 'leader' when elected to become a councillor, council chairman or house of assembly member( i think these people are worse than the governors and president that we shout about, met loads of them and most of those people should be shot) |

SO UNLESS ANYONE CAN TELL ME THE PICTURES I HAVE POSTED ARE FAKES OR NOT IN BRITAIN THEN "BRITAIN SHOULD BE THE ONE SORTING OUT THEIR SHIT INSTEAD OF POKING THEIR NOSES INTO OTHER COUNTRY'S SHIT" No country on earth is eldorado.chikena.Not even the UAE where everything almost looks picture perfect(u need to ask the illegal immigrants there).and Britain has always been poking their nosed into other people'shit hence COLONIALISM without which you or me would not be using computers. guess everything has its good and BAD sides. |

vislabraye: I don't think he means to sound vindictive, but just expressing his views about working in the Uk. Many people complain about the taxes, which at the end of the day the take home pay is just a tiny fraction was i complaining about my take home pay?so why did he have to say @damiso?everyone complains about the deductions from their wages. its just human nature to wish that all your money could be yours.even when i was workin in naija, where taxes paid are minimal,i still used to grumble at the pension deductions(that is still meant to come back to me one way or the other).so what is he on about and why did he have to single my comments out when it is apparent in all my posts that i made no mention of where i lived.i was talking about adopting a certain view to life which is not dependent on where you live,so why did he have to bring my location into it.and if u don't know Mr builder, some people have househelps in the uk too, they are called au pairs. |

lucabrasi: @DAMISO how come you r not saying anything about angiefan's photos but you have a whole lot to say about all mine?its ok for her to post pictures of dead people and you don't see anything wrong with that yet my pictures are going overboard, if i wanted to go overboard ill post pictures of dead british in 7/7,the flood e.t.c ill suggest you not comment again on my photos if you cannot be objective!!
more, dear mr luca been too busy over the weeknd and this morn to comment on this thread that is now getting overflogged.I do think angie fan has gone overboard with her postings of corpse pics, pics of innocent children(who believe me are having fun despite what she calls filth) and insults on the nigerian people.two wrongs do not make a right.abeg stop humoring her by posting replies to her pics. |

wumiabo: damiso I know someone will take me on on this that is why i said for the sake of argument. Can you tell me why life is so expensive in london even compared to the rest of the world. Being low paid, a driver (for the sake of the same argument) can afford to have a house no matter what in Nigeria. no one on the so called minimum wage can afford it in london. Listen to me, i am against the class disparity, the hype of the western world, the middle class and working class divides.
All human beings are equal even though some are more equal than the others but the disparity doesnt have to be so wide. let us take whatever we have gained here and go build our own Nigeria. Whatever be the case, we are strangers here, even the bible says 'how can we sing the Lords song in a strange land'. I am proud to be a Nigerian no matter what and i tell all my white colleagues at work, they know am not a thieve, they know am not a con man, they know am straight but they also know am Nigerian. i can't change that, NIGERIA IS THE ONLY COUNTRY I CAN CALL MY OWN, so i have to stick by her no matter what, and i have to defend her no matter where. i agree with on all the higlighted, but you have to agree that the avearge well off nigerian is a sucker for the 'class, i am better than you thing'.even poor people want to opress poor people and would like them to know 'we are not on the same level'.that is why a danfo driver will tell a poor girl that has been working like a slave in a bank(just anexample)' ma ko pa e danu(meaning i will kill you).u know why he said that its not the girl, its the fact that she is driving that car and he is cared that his maybe he might never drive that type of car.is it by force to own a car?so many people ca afford cars here and choose not to buy one.but in naija car is 1.a necessity cos public transportation is crap2.it is a status symbol. I intend to go home in the nearest future cos i love naija believe me i am a naija lover to the core and am here cos the love of my life is here,He knows it and we are working on going back home soon.I must say that i am also guilty of the whole class thing one way or the other but being here has made me appreciate the dignity in labour.I wish i could reorientate all nigerians to pls respect everyone.a bus driver here is proud of his job and is not looked down on by his peers, but a 'big boy' in a bank in nigeria will feel he is better than his friend he went to uni with that works in alausa seceteriat.and the one in alausa sef they envy am not because he wants to better his lot generally but beacuse of this same status thing.then he is promoted to an office where he is in charge of contracts, egunje bade(egunje don land).he too will now buy 'babyboy'(honda civic dont what yr) and him and the bank friend are now 'big boys' |

abujabooks: @Poster,
U r very right. I don't hv an housegirl.
5 years ago, I sat down and thought to myself that, my kids r growing up fast. I am allowed 18yrs to spend with them. After 18yrs, dy r off 2 Uni & dy will live their own lives.
So, I acquired new skills and looked for a job that I cn do from home. Nt just a crappy & lowly paid but a fulfilling career. I found loads.
I own my own business. I work from home. Spend loads of time with my kids & hubby. I am fulfilled.
Occasionally, When I go to Central London, and I stop and look at d men & women rushing 2 get 2 work or get home. I am grateful to God.
My children & I r enjoying d fruits of my labour.
I dress better than most of my friends in d rat race.
They tell me dy wish dy cn. I tell dm, dy cn if dy want to.
How?
Cut down on ur expenses. Realign ur priorities.
I am yet to find a billionaire on his dying bed, who wished he spent more time at d office. They always wished dy spent more time with their wife & kids.
Blessed & wise is d person who cn apply this life principle. WORD.really looking inwards to see how i would be able to achieve this when my kids start coming and need me. |
