PoliticsRe: The Worst Governor During Obasanjo Regime by davidif: 5:10pm On Sep 02, 2009
who is OGD?

Saminu Turaki : Jigawa State. During his tenue, Jigawa State had the highest rate of maternal mortality in the world because he refused to construct 10/ 15 kilometer roads that will link villages to hospitals so most pregnant women or women who had just given birth and needed medical attention died because they could not get to hospitals. Most of these women had to ride on camel backs in their conditions and so bleed to death.

Why build another airport in Lagos when there are two already?. Why not invest that money in another infrastructure?. Is this not a white elephant project?

Ekiti was drawn out of the old ondo for those who wanted more states.
I know, that's why i am asking the question because it seems stupid for it to be a state, its too small.

What is wrong with this country and this state especially?? O ga o, this is absolute stupidity. It is actually really really scary when you get to the realization that you are actually smarter than the leader of your state or that you have a better  knowledge of running a state than the other leaders in the govt.

P.S
Can someone please tell what the difference between Ekiti and Ondo state is? Can't they merge both states together? The politics in this state is absolutely terrible and to top it off we have an incredibly incompetent leader. Lord help us. This is why i have always pushed for the consolidation of states into the old regions (pre-1980) so as to reduce the pool of incompetent leaders that we have and to reduce the number of govt officials (Nigeria uses 60% of its GNP to pay for every govt. official and civil servant from Akwa Ibom to Zamfara) so that our choices of candidates wouldn't be limited to the likes of Segun Oni or Ayo Fayose?

mrs. feminist,
Not really, what's wrong is when you have unmarried singles given married people advice out of there ignorance. A lot of single unmarried women expect there "prince charming" to be absolutely perfect when no man is. If you are expecting perfection, i wish you the best then. Let's just hope that at age 70 you are still not single living with 20 cats.

leilah, i don't know who you're talking about. many many nigerian guys like white women. when they come to US, they want to be able to say they've dated a white woman.
Na lie oooo shocked, i have been to a lot of places with lots of naija boys and i am still yet to find a naija boy dating an oyinbo. There probably are but they are very very few.

Don't be so stupid! You are intellegent enough to know
that there is no race in the world where everyone is ugly.
There are ugly white people, I agree, but there are also
ugly black people.
Beauty is down to genetics and not race, so ,really, this
thread is bullsh*t.
Yep, this thread is a terrible thread.

PoliticsRe: Can Nigeria Police Be Reformed? How? by davidif: 4:32am On Aug 31, 2009
It is impossible for the nigerian police to be reformed. The police system is corrupt from the top to the very least person.
Chiaza, stop generalizing. You do have a point though that even the inspector general of the federal republic is corrupt so why would the ordinary policeman not be.
But i believe that "impossible is nothing" and "where there is a will, there is a way".

The steps to ensure a better police force is:

1. Raise the standards for recruiting police officers. For example all police officers must have at least a university degree

2. Increase the salary and compensation packages. This should include generous benefits for there families in case they are injured or killed in the  line of duty

3. Accountability, accountability, accountability. There has to be performance review of every police man in every precinct (or district) each year to adequately assess them.

4. Better weaponry and better training on how to use them. They should be taught the rules of engagement (how to engage the enemy) in situations like armed robberies, rioting mobs e.t.c

5. They should be taught how to seal off a crime scene so as to prevent evidence from being compromised. They should also be taught latest techniques in criminal investigation like using scientific technology. This includes DNA testing, fingerprint analysis (and a database to keep all fingerprints).

6. They should be taught better interrogation techniques so that we don't have another Boko Haram incident where the ringleader in custody was shot.

Man u get money o. is your dad a politician?
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. That's a good one.

It is actually very difficult to get a PE gig straight out of college. you need to have worked in an IB division first b4 u culd try PE. Except u are a math genius from one of these schools.
You are definitely right on that one. They definitely pick guys with lots of experience man.

I think Mba these days are not worth it  or too risky

Especially with all the money invested in school, When I ever i see Mba i just think to my self too much of a risk
In recent times people who have gotten their Mbas are the ones losing jobs when private companies go Bad.

I plan on getting my Mba with a JD just to be safe

or llm and masters in economics
Great choice but i believe that MBA's would always rule. People have been predicting the demise of the MBA since decades ago, but it still relevant. How else would guys from Engineering or science learn about business if not through an MBA? You don't expect them to go get a master's in economics do you?

They only recruit at a select number of schools Harvard/Princeton/Yale/Stanford/MIT/ Columbia/Wharton/Williams/Amherst for their business analyst positions
Yep that is usually where the wall street boys recruit from. The top private equity firms like KKR and Blackstone recruit heavily from this schools also.

EducationRe: The Best Business Schools In The World by davidif(op): 6:24pm On Aug 29, 2009
A very good close friend of mine is currently doing his MBA in MIT and he was hired for the summer by a Private Equity firm and sent to work in Lagos.

He had always wanted to do the whole Corporate Finance stuff so getting a PE opportunity, by all accounts, was even better.

I called him recently to discuss how he is finding PE and if he sees his future in it and the firm. He told me that even PE is small cheese that the level of projects he was exposed to working in Nigeria has opened his eyes. He said some Nigerian guys were making a killing opening up their high profile business projects and all he is looking at now is how to work for himself.

I was shocked as most financiers see PE as the holy grail.
That's interesting because me too, i applied to a private equity firm in the summer through a partner that i know at the firm but i didn't get it. But there are no business opportunities in naija like that. Its not as if you can go to Unilag and look at new innovative technology or new "start-ups" firms that have marketable potential in the future then decide to establish your own venture capital firm like they do at sillicon valley. In naija, everything has to do with banking.

By the way, private equity is not the holy grail, its hedge fund. To me working at Goldmans Sachs' risk arbitrage sector would help me gain experience so that i can start my own hedge fund that specializes in risk arbitrage.
PoliticsRe: The CBN Planned Road Show by davidif: 5:52am On Aug 29, 2009
vigasimple
You are comparing apples and oranges. Ben Bernanke (along with Hank Paulson and Timothy Geithner) saved the entire US financial system from collapsing because they made bad bets in the subprime housing market. Lamido Sanusi on the other hand came in after the system had collapsed mostly because his banks were doctoring there financial statements. Sanusi's reason for firing the head of those banks were absolutely justified because these guys were posting false profits. In America, the FBI would have come for them long ago, but in a country as incredibly corrupt as naija, where the ministry of justice is toothless. Sanusi had to take matters into his own hands and do the right thing, which meant firing the heads of those banks.
PoliticsRe: The CBN Planned Road Show by davidif: 11:54pm On Aug 28, 2009
Meanwhile in industrialized nations various sectors of the economy work together, it is not impossible for the CBN Governor to work closely with Energy Ministers, Commerce and Industry Ministers to grow our economy locally. We have put our hopes for so long on foreign investors and it does not yield much fruit. They came into the banking sector when the banks started doing well, they are also involved in oil because its a viable sector.
Wrong!!! over here, the CBN (here they call it the federal reserve bank) is ONLY MEANT FOR MONETARY POLICY (control of money supply) NOT FISCAL POLICY. You leave that to the federal govt (the minister of finance).
EducationRe: The Best Business Schools In The World by davidif(op): 11:50pm On Aug 28, 2009
Unfortunately, only the top schools provide a good chance of return but it is still a high risk that might not be worth taking if your direction is on the right track, you can add alternatives with professional qualifications at a fraction of the price and you know what to do with $100K.
Yeah, i understand that. That is why i am working on getting other qualifications as well.
