Religion / Re: Which Bible Is The Inspired Word Of God ? by esere826: 4:49pm On Feb 20, 2015
frosbel:
The bible is the word of God, truly inspired by him in all respects and aspects.
My question is, which bible is the inspired word of God ?

The bible is not the word of God
Though we tend to say this, but it is actually not.

that you call a baby an angel or your girlfriend your baby or chick doesn't mean that they are.
She's not a chicken but a grown woman.
that cute baby is no angel. he's got a pipi and has no wings.

So likewise the bible is not the word of God
it contains words from God, words from men, and words from demons too.
After all, a demon in the bible, as Jesus was about to cast it out, said "we are legion for we are many"
That was a demon, talking, and a man writing it down

If the bible is indeed the word of God
then we err in what we have
For we then should have only the original patches in the original languages without all these verses.

In that case also, we all should learn the original languages used in the scriptures and not add a jot or take away anything.

but NO
what we have are books where people try hard to bring together the original fragments and make it readable to all.

The bible is a great book which if properly discerned helps us in our journey with Christ who is the Word of God

Politics / Re: Boko Haram Carries Out First Attack On Niger Republic by esere826: 4:54pm On Feb 06, 2015
Litmus:
Why would bokoharam attack Niger ask yourselves that? Bokoharam is supposedly being fought by Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon. In addition, AU wants to come to Nigeria and UN and France too and yet Bokoharam goes and attacks Niger, inviting more enemies. You think its arrogance, drugs, or like I've alll ways argued Bokoharam wants foreign forces on Nigerian soil.

Why would bokoharam want foreign forces in Nigeria?

My feeling is that the answer depends on the powers backing Bokoharam. If Bokoharam is a genuine wahibist franchise like Alkaida and ISIS funded initially or still so by powers like Saudi Arabia/Quarter then Bokoharam probably are at once seeking to illicit the sympathy of foreign fighters to come join thire Jihad and wanting to spread their Jihad through the West Africa region and in the processes linking up with Alkaida in the Maghreb.

However, if Bokoharam is receiving Western support, then Bokoharam's motive is to legitimate Foreign forces in Nigeria. I know that Nigerians find it difficult to imagine that when those forces do arrive that chiefs behind the scenes could be controlling both the slaughtering of Bokoharam terrorists while at the same time arming and recruiting more terrorists to join Bokoharm so that the fighting never ends in Nigeria. Gradually over time things will deteriorate in Nigeria and perhaps in the sub-region creating lucrative opportunity for all sorts of Nations and interests. Through back-channels, even as Bokoharam is being decimated, Bokoharam will have funds to recruit , terrorist from far-flung places will join them. We would have one vast lucrative war stretching right across West Africa to central Africa. And the potential of Nigeria will die with all this forever or until the Whites come and take control and bring peace, decades down the line. There'd be new lines drawn on the map of West Africa and the people that now make up Nigeria would no longer stand tall but would be like the rest of Africa, wringing our hands and being grateful to the white master and singing his praises and daring to do nothing without his approval. And his approval will never permit space travel because there are hungry mouths to feed first etc, etc

You're assuming a lot
you really think that these guys are experts in thinking and identifying the borders between the countries?

This is not an endorsement of GEJ, but a rebuke to the silly

I look and laugh

these critics are like the greedy dog thirsting after the bones of the none-existent dog
They might end up in a worse state than they presently have if they take the leap of stupidity

Now, don't get me wrong
I'm not in anyway endorsing Jonathan
what I'm simply saying is that when you are down
and others who had the power to help passed you by without offering any help
at least first thank the man who helped you onto his donkey before raining insults on him for not offering you his horse instead
Politics / Re: The Dog, Its Bone And Some Critisism Of Jonathan by esere826: 3:25pm On Feb 05, 2015
Why critisize Jonathan's rail networks stupidly?

I have once commented about folks that castigate politicians who complete their predecessors projects
as it not being their projects
i think it is extremely stupid and one of the reasons why we have abandoned projects littering the whole place
after all, why complete that road if the credit is given to the governor who simply graded the red earth and ate the rest money
is given the credit

I have now noticed another dangerous dimension
Folks criticize the good works that a few politicians have mustered the courage to do
so, a governor tars roads that never existed during the regime of previous administrations
and these critics cry out "is that not supposed to be a normal thing?"

a president gets our rail lines kicking to life
from the doldrums were they once existed in
and these critics cry out "Nonsense, why doesn't he provide trams and high speed trains"

in our more private life
someone asks for help in paying school fees, and a good samaritan pays half the fees
these critics bark out "Why take a man close to the stream and then stop him from drinking the water"

How the greedy dog lost its bone

Ever heard the story of the greedy dog and the bone
It goes something like this.

The dog grabbed a bone and was on his jolly way home accross a bridge
he looked at the water below and saw his reflection
thinking it was another dog with a bone, it began to growl hoping that the other dog will let go of its bone
and would have 2 bones
well as it growled, its reflection growled too.
It soon got upset. dropped its bone int the river and dived after its reflection hoping to get the othe bone

smiley all's well that ends well
I no contribute give Ikanium so I really do not have much moral authority to speak on this issue, but here is my explanation for IK's behaviour:
...that is assuming that the boy is only lying, and not a proper fraudster (I believe the former)

When someone has no money and is surrounded by folks (close relatives) that have no money
it is only natural that he would do what IK did.
I know it hurts the donors a lot especially if they have lots of needs but chose to prioritize the needs of the receiver who might not even be a family member... but na so life be

If you give a man in need, money for business, and he loves his son who has fallen into distress
be rest assured that the money will go into taking care of the son

If you're not rich, and you marry someone from a poor home, be rest assured that your spouse will use your meagre resources
to try and uplift his/her family...na so life be
(e even try sef,...some folks go even donate ya donation to dem give church and lie about it)

Ikanium was only being human and of course he can't come here bold faced and say " I helped my mum"
..we are finite, and so no one wants extra liability.
We most likely would have turned our backs on him
so he naturally had to lie
and you duty is to catch him and painfully but rightly point him that you are not God ...a hard brutal choice for him to accept

The only silly thing I can accuse him of is trying to do importation and requesting funding for that
instead of starting small with what you guys could gladly give to him

...IK you are close to the end of one journey
were hopefully you would be in a better position to use your own resources for your loved ones
you need all the goodwill you can muster to see this through... so thread cautiously and don't mess it up
do the needful but painful and invest the resources of others on your academics above all.

This is embarrassing, but you probably can get your brother to open an alternative NL account and ask for temporary funds for the family
Thanks to everyone that has blessed this young man and those that have pointed out his folly

....cheers all

If its bad misrepresentation or the fault of the copyist or interpreter like many of you said, won't all this put the whole Bible in 'skepticism'. I mean why misinterpret one verse when you can misinterpret the whole Bible?.

I'll assume that this is not a rhetorical question, where the purpose is to pose a thought but does not require an answer
So I'll rephrase your question again so that we can elicit an answer:

Q) Won't our suggestions of mis-respresentation in one or two verses imply that the entire bible should be viewed with suspicion?

A) On my own part, I think there are at least two sets of people when it comes to study.
-The first set accepts anything that comes to them and build their knowledge base within this.
-The 2nd set challenge assumptions, and look out for gaps. The goal is not to destroy the mineral being mined, but to chip at the rough edges and dirt until the diamond within glitters really good.

As the 2nd set of studiers improve a body of knowledge, they pass it on to the 1st set who finally accept it as the defacto guide book.
Every season, every age, scholars are busy working on the bible which they present in the form of versions such as NIV, KJV etc

We are thus 2 different sets of people. The first which are in majority don't bother themselves with suspicions
The 2nd which are a small minority are curious and suspicious of many things and seek to find answers. Some end up becoming atheists, others become a different breed of Christians from the mainstream.

uhm....interesting
I'll sidestep making much comments and take another approach.

Somehow we are made to believe that prophesies are a prediction of the future.
Even the traditions of judaism and the dictionary seems to agree with this.

However, I sense that this might not be the case.
I presently believe that a prophesy is more about speaking words that shape the outcomes of the future -A future that has not previously existed

Predictions or fortune telling on the other hand seeks to look at the future and tell the story today.
They appear similar, but are not exactly same

So, for example when God says to Ezekiel in Ezekiel 37:4 "prophesy to these dry bones....."
he is not necasarily predicting the future in the true sense of the word.
What he is doing is speaking words to shape the future of the dry bones

now, ..in conclusion
I'd be reluctant and careful to have someone prophesy(shape) my future whether money or no money is involved
I 'd rather that God speaks to me directly and give me the words and nudges that I would use in shaping my future

Yours is another great point of view with regards to Paul speaking sarcastically
and it is possible.

Many times, the bible somehow does not easily capture the emotional undertones behind statements made
I noticed such gaps with some of Jesus comments in the new testament which did not make sense to me previously
however, when I reviewed them after giving Jesus more human emotional attributes, they began to make more sense to me.

but then again BabaGnoni
Frosbel is not far from your point either
He concludes that ancient lying scribes made the changes
while you suggest that modern unskilled scribes were not able to properly transcribe the message

the meeting point is that there is possibly a misrepresentation of what Paul said in this verse
Religion / Re: Women Should Not Keep Quiet In Church ! by esere826: 1:35pm On Jan 28, 2015
Hi frosbel

Nice question, I also read the link you provided. This is my opinion:

It is very possible that Paul did say that women should not speak in church.
Unlike what the article in the link says, the text does flow perfectly.
It talks about confusion and disorder and tries to manage this by limiting the amount of outspoken voices in a congregation.

If my assumption is correct, then the challenge would be to answer this question: "was what Paul said the word of God?"

For those that hold literarily tight to the bible. Their answer would be "yes, afterall, all scriptures are God-breathed"
For those that allow some loose ends, Pauls conclusion to his statement would make them have no choice than to agree that it was the word of God. For paul says: "If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord’s commandment."
Some will just form ignoring and skip that chapter about women silence in church.

I on my part think that Paul was not correct if indeed he said both.
In my opinion (still assuming he said both) he was either
1) giving a command from God which God meant for that time
or
2) making reference to earlier Jewish traditions (considered as God's commandment) of male -female separation in synangogue activities
or
3) he was mis-representing God

Now, I'll push further.
If it was (3), then I will still be able to understand and empathise with him.
In our modern day, we have folks who are close to God, or who like to think that they are closer to God than others.
What I have observed is that these folks do a lot of mis representation of God. They say what God says, and add theirs
and then sum up everything as coming from God

But why would they mis-represent God?
It is understandable.
I doubt that many times we who call ourselves Christians have actually heard God speak in plain human-like language
my experience is that he tends to speak in inprints
when you receive that imprint you then try to translate it into language
in translating it, you use your words which are many times coloured by your personality, and values
in fact ( and typical of any oral transfer of information) the time gap between the imprint and when you say it can give enough room for the story to blossom beyond what was originally said except you write it down immediately

Despite this flaw in the communication process,
what you end up saying does carry the nucleus of the initial message although the peripherals might have been distorted
For example, I suspect that the message of tithing, first fruits etc have been seriously distorted.
however the nucleus of it still remains the same which is:
That we should make finance available for the Church to spend in achieving the goals of Christ

Still on the matter of Paul, my conclusion is that if indeed it was number (3) that happened
it did not shift from the original message/command which was that:
....there should be some order in church.
Politics / Re: Why PDP Is Zoooming In On Buharis Certificate by esere826: 1:09pm On Jan 23, 2015
This has been long,

..but by now, I think you understand the gist.
There are some smart folks in Jonathans team (I believe Akin and FFK are part of the brains behind this)
who understand the way reinforced narratives work.

What they are trying to do is to slow down the viral spread of the sai Buhari crowd by redirecting the issues and narratives.
These prevents those of us that are on the fence to jump in and sheepishly join the ever increasing Buhari crowd
This slow in speed will also calm down the zeal of pro-Buhari electorates in the South who might charged up to vote, defend their vote, and protest if their vote is rigged or perceived rigged

They've got about 3 more weeks to go, and the media, typical dog like they are,
are happy to go chasing after the bones of certificate scandal stories

.......Unhmmmmmm, should I say Sai Buhari or sigh Buhari?
Politics / Re: Why PDP Is Zoooming In On Buharis Certificate by esere826: 1:02pm On Jan 23, 2015
I think I have deviated too much from the thrust of my story.

If you've read stuff about network theory, you'd understand the power of influencers
this is were most media platforms fall under
Folks may describe those of us who disperse info on print and social media as armchair critics
and in fact say that we do not vote........they miss the point.
The idea behind media is that if you generate enough positive buzz,
people start believing and buying into it
That's how mega churches rise
that's how Abiola's Concord supported coups too

So I read alot about the failings of Jonathan, and the beauty of Buhari the mesiah to come
I gradually start liking Buhari and saying he would win
I the non-voter tell my Driver (the voter) that Buhari is great.
His wife hears the same story from her madam.
They tell their neighbours, who have also heard this, and soon a myth becomes a reality
Politics / Re: Why PDP Is Zoooming In On Buharis Certificate by esere826: 1:01pm On Jan 23, 2015
Already firmly rooted in the Southwest, Tinubu's party tried to penetrate into the Midwest and middle belt
He soon scored a big one when he drew Buharis CPC in. With the defection of 5 PDP rebel governors to APC
Tinubu's party became a truely national party for the first time although with a strange religious leaning at that time

Media and IT savvy yoruba youths who were already besothed to their man Tinubu were more than happy to adopt
the man Buhari. I cringe when say that a large chunk of them would probably also have adopted Atiku
if Tinubu and supported him. they would simply have described it as "change"

But here came Buhari, who any one alive in Nigeria would easily describe as squeaky clean
He was thus a perfect choice.
Whereas the nothern urchins have kept their narrative about Buhari as a religion and ethnic protector
Buharis' team for the south have smartly used another strategy.
They have highlighted Buhari as an anti-corruption czar who would jail all the big men who snatch their girlfriends
Politics / Re: Why PDP Is Zoooming In On Buharis Certificate by esere826: 1:00pm On Jan 23, 2015
Goodluck's political machine zoomed in on this glaring religious projection of Buharis constituents
and further helped to accentuate it for him using all available media avenues.
It was thus easy to split Nigerians votes between core north poor muslims for Buhari,
and the rest of Nigeria for Jonathan. Jonathan's team only helped the rest of Nigeria see what
Buharis followers saw in him.

After Jonathan sat on the throne, a large swath of young Nigerians were begining to get frustrated with him
this stage marked the rise of Social media in Nigeria (which Jonathan brought to our country grin)
The social media space is a hard one to police, especially by an underdeveloped country
Now, you must understand something about media in general.
The only way that they can remain in business is to ensure that controversies and gossips are always available
The traditional print media for the first time in a long time were not being harrased
like a mad dog released from its leach to chase the intruder, which then turns against its owner when it sees no one else to chase
the print and social media which previously lashed out at powerful antiJonathan elements
they were very happy to run amoc with any and all stories about Jonathan (apart from his sex life) that tickled their fancies
You must have noticed that they were not quick to try this with the governors who are way more brutal than Jonathan in wielding their power

Tinubu the man many perceived as being more corrupt than Ibori but more tactical
began to gradually harness this noise. He was hailed as a hero. Wetin im achieve, me I never see yet
He had stood as almost a one man squad against the Obasanjo's PDP previously
and had also been spot-on in the one who he anointed as a governor for Lagos state

Tinubu and his ACN was now being gradually accepted by the vocal and savvy yoruba youths as the new Awolowo
They had not met Awolowo, but had heard about him. Here was their chance to crown a new Awolowo.
Gradually, opposition to PDP in general (whether because one did not get an appointment or for other reasons)
and Jonathan in particular began to coalesce around Tinubu.
Politics / Re: Why PDP Is Zoooming In On Buharis Certificate by esere826: 12:59pm On Jan 23, 2015
Folks might be wondering why PDP is bothering itself with such a small matter
as a secondary school certificate which a number of us who are younger would have misplaced by now.
I'll tell you why, but understanding it might take a long process of story telling

The power of choice is in the availablity of information.
In the world of business management, we refer to this as information asymetry or symetry
In a democratic dispensation, the availability and manipulation of information is paramount

Buhari previously had a cult like following only in the core north.
The information that the street urchins who queued up behind him had
was of a religious ethnic zealot who would defend their faith and tribe.
He was also considered a big man who would stoop low to the level of the commoners.
Buhari, played his part in not defraying this perception. In fact he seems to have encouraged it.
These street urchins were not in anyway bothered with the anti-corruption narative of Buhari
they wouldn't have cared a hoot if he was the most corrupt man in the universe.
