Swiftboy: I think its a neurological disorder. A comprehensive research into the root cause of the brain disorder can help eliminate pain without the use of drugs and to find an alternative way of helping the disorder! I think it'll have been better if it the disorder start as the surferrers grow and not a birth disorder.
I agree with you. The young boy will make a good research subject for brain scientists investigating the neural underpinning of pain. Additionally, functional scans of his brain would help provide additional insight into the brain region thought to be mediating aspect of pain.

Life itself is a misery; it will be difficult to convince an uneducated layman that pain is indeed beneficial to humankind.

Femicrux: Hey guys,

I'm preparing to write my GRE in December. Looking at Fall 2014 for masters admission. Not really decided on any school yet. Pls, who knows of good schools in US or Canada who offer international students scholarships (not necessarily full) or assistantship positions based on GRE scores?

Thanks.
Hi Femi, it would be an arduous task to specifically give you names of ''good schools'' as you didn't state your stats.

The best approach is to peruse individual graduate program's website. The availability and requirement for assistantships are usually stated on such websites. However, if any of such information is ambiguous, you can contact the program coordinator directly.

Good luck with the 'infamous' GRE. You might want to start from here:

How do we know for sure that the young boy in question was not hallucinating or suffering from schizophrenia. This is scientifically unverifiable. He needs to see a psychiatrist.

I suggest you go for Lloyds, they don't waste time with opening of accounts for international students.

As for Natwest, it will take forever before they open an account for you (based on personal experience). Another disadvantage is that I can't use my Natwest debit card on non-Natwest cash machines. I need to do either cash-back, counter withdrawal at postoffice or do Israelites waka go where Natwest machine dey.

I'm sure there are other good banks out there, I've only had experience (personal & through friends) with Lloyds & Natwest.

Tinkybabe: You are absolutely right! The response data should have been different from if it were a blind test. The result isn't credible enough in my opinion
You've both raised an important point, well done! It would have been more ecologically valid if researchers had only told the subjects after PET scanning. Although they claimed to have ''simulated social rejection'', it would be difficult to know if such simulated rejection is representative of a ''real one''.
Science/Technology › Re: Brain Treats Rejection Like Physical Pain - Research by FutureDon(m): 9:25pm On Oct 17, 2013
Stone123: Even more than physical pain, rejections can withhold brain from doing its normal function for long compare to physical pain.
I agree with you, rejection could result into neurochemical imbalance in the brain.
Science/Technology › Re: Brain Treats Rejection Like Physical Pain - Research by FutureDon(m): 9:21pm On Oct 17, 2013
Oh nice one! I think I've read a few functional neuroimaging (specifically fMRI) papers with a similar research focus. Let's see how far the replication of this study will go - following similar methodological approach (particularly with a PET scanner).

godG: In bold: NO sir
Sir,
the trend over the years is writing exams before applying. You don't need to rush, take one step at a time. Perhaps you are running behind schedule, put a mail, call, etc. through to ur school.
Sir, the fact that it is a the trend (as you've claimed) does not mean 'submitting an application before writing the GRE' is unacceptable. You were so assertive in your response which failed to profer a direct answer to Mr UNIKLover's question.

In an attempt to answer other people's question, I think it's imperative that we give direct response to their questions instead of trying to express our opinion (except an opinion is sought). I have also noticed your forceful responses to people's questions, I don't think that's usually the best approach. Apologies if you comprehend this post as a rude one.

Do i wait till i write my GRE before i start sending my applications to schools?
Should i also pay application fees before i write my GRE?

God bless you guys
Yes, you can apply to schools (and pay application fees) before writing the GRE. However, some schools would ask you to indicate your GRE date while filling their online application. Good luck!

femoric9: Pls house, hope time is still on my side to appy for spring with d hope of a graduate assistantship,. I've written my GRE with 155Quant and 149Verbal. I will be writing TOELF dis month ............
You might want to start looking at Fall admission due to ASUU strike, as this would likely prevent you from applying for transcripts and getting hold of lecturers to serve you good recommendation letters. Another reason why you should also consider Fall admission session is that majority of graduate assistantship are available during Fall session.

Don't be ''afraid'' of your GPA, there is nothing you can do to raise it up, too late for that sir smiley. Endeavor to write a believable SoP. However, I would advice you to apply to as many schools as possible and maybe stay away from the annoyingly competitive ones due to your academic stats.

To be honest, I don't think it's compulsory to ''always'' convert GPA to US equivalent. In my quest to know more, I've come across several US unis asking international students NOT to convert their gpa to American equivalent. I think it varies across Unis, so I suggest you ask the schools you are applying into. However, if you have $5, you can make use of iGPA service on WES website or use the steps earlier listed by BigFrancis. Alternatively, you could use foreigncredits.com. I've assessed it and it gives a gpa almost similar to WES, it's free to use.

Yes, you can apply before writing your TOEFL. I wish you the best.

Tochium: Yes, its quite unfair, his interview is in 2days time. Pls justwise unban him so that he can learn more from Mandy's experience.
As Justwise earlier stated, the ban won't prevent him from reading this thread. ''Pardon'' is one of the big problems our great country is facing; e.g presidential pardon. Now you want ''Moderator pardon'' for someone who knowingly broke the rules.

@ Mr Cavenchy

My original comment was not directed at you. I think it's obvious enough that the comments I had made was a response to an assertion credited to another moniker.

I thought my comment was lucid enough - I did not propose that coming out top of a class ''guarantee expertise'', neither did I claim to be Mr-know-it-all. However, I thought your comparison is faulty; because you came out tops fortuitously (as you have claimed) does not mean it's the same for every body. A fortuitous win is completely different from one which is consistent.

I think your comments are usually well reasoned and I appreciate that. I remember your moniker from the days of visa application. Cheers bro!! smiley

Great steps in neurodegenerative diseases

Though I don't think there'll be any explanation of phenotypic reactions to neuroleptic drugs side effects such as haloperidol to schizophrenia and mood relieving disorders
I agree with you. One may argue that it will illuminate human understanding on the developmental neuroscience of some brain-related diseases. However, its application to drug research may not be insightful as one need to assess cognitive improvement following drug administration; it would be difficult to do such assessment in a stand-alone miniature brain.

A great news!

olupentane: Gurus in the house
please I'm still an undergraduate studying statistics, but I've started gathering info and tips to make my international Msc hitch free. After some search I found out there is Msc&Phd (taught courses) and Msc&Phd (research work), but I've nt been able to get info on there diff as well as advantage and disadvantages, to know which one is worth putting for. Thank bosses
I'm not a guru here, but questions of this nature interests me smiley

The statement in bold font is slightly ambiguous. Admittedly, there are MSc (taught option) and MSc by research programs. However, I doubt the existence of a PhD statistics program with no component of primary research.

Try to gather more info. Most science PhD programs in America have a similar pattern of requirements. During the first 2 years, a student is required to complete the taught component (coursework) of the program and maybe take some lab rotations. Subsequently, a student is then expected to pass a comprehensive (or quals) exam at the end of 2nd year before proceeding to candidacy. I believe this is when someone becomes a PhD candidate rather than a PhD student. At this stage, a student will be required to engage actively in research for the lab/group s/he had selected.
Christianity Etc › Re: Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo Of COZA In Sex Scandal by FutureDon(m):
Who am I to blame the Pastor Biodun or the girl in question. But some of these girls tempt their pastors. I know of a COZA brother who impregnated another COZA sister, the brother in question was left with no option than to hurriedly marry the pregnant sister.

Sometimes I wonder how the so-called pastors of 'new generation churches' cope with the provocative dress their members usually put on. Pastors are human being with ordinary flesh also. You need to see the way MOST COZA girls dresses to church; that's about 5years ago, I'm sure things must have gone more 'gaga' now.

What I'm saying in general is that some of these sisters seduce their pastors, either knowingly or unknowingly. The most annoying part of it is that some NIGERIAN Christians now worship their pastor and not God, and won't hesitate to sit on a pastor's lap in order to be ''shown another level of grace''.

Na only God sabi who dey worship am.

@doctore89

No one here can assess your ''chances of getting admission'' with such limited information you've dished out (i.e your TOEFL score). Let me also add that good clinical psychology PhD programs in America are unsurprisingly competitive; this is a known fact and not a baseless assertion.

conyema12: Hi guys, pls i need to know; when submitting my applications to my school, do i also need to submit letter of finacial backing, its is among the pdf forms i printed from their application site. Thanx
I think it varies across Universities and the graduate degree level (MSc or PhD). For some University, you can send it after an admission offer has been granted. On the other hand, some PhD programs ask applicants to upload an empty page in case one is unable to proceed with the application. However, I don't think it influence or jeopardize admission chances in anyway.
