I still don't understand the negativity on Nairaland. Maybe its because many people on here aren't Nigerian or at least don't live in Nigeria.

I think its because they know little to nothing about whats happening in their country.

Anyway Nigeria's Military has built indigenous Transport boats, ferries, warship (u/c) and is a major player in dry dock repairs in west africa and africa.

So why cant they build assault boats? . . .

What can lagos state do to stop flooding, Nothing. Simply because the state has no cash to build an integrated drainage network.

This is a problem for the federal government to resolve either by building or funding a proper drainage network that includes sewage pipes (not gutters), Tanks, Underground drainage tunnels, levees,Pump stations and Flood gates.

Until then Lagos state gov will have to build secondary or temporary street drains but It wont solve the flood problem unless a true network is built.

I already know that lagos state has a town planning master plan draw up by Dar Al-Handasah Consultants but IDK if lagosians flowing it. Most likely alot of houses will have to be demolished for the masterplan to work.

Lagosians also have to stop dumping refuse, The state should enforce punishments and fines for littering.

All in all Lagos will have this problem for a while, I will be here next year when a similar thread will be created.

For you guys who live outside nigeria you will want to know that it has rained every day so far this month in the southern part of Nigeria, and its still going to rain for a long time to come.

Also its not only lagos that is experiencing floods almost every city in the southern parts are experiencing floods.

But the flood in lagos are more devastating because Lagos sits on a delta and on the mouth of the Ogun River. Not to mention its low height above sea level and bad infrastructure.

The picture posted is either a old picture of Lagos (less likely) or of a different rail corridor, most likely the port Harcourt - Enugu.

Lagos has since cleared those markets and new tracks were laid when yuradua was in office (notice the condition of the tracks).

Most likely this is the port harcourt - Enugu - Maiduguri corridor since rehabilitation work hasn't started.

It can also be Ibadan, but I don't know how far construction has progressed on the Lagos - Ibadan - Kaduna corridor.

Go protest to your state and local government and leave Shell alone.

All they did was collect government allowance for THEMSELVES.

As much as I love my country I can not bend reality. There is no state in Nigeria that is truly clean or developed. They all have their nice areas, and their "clean" city centers but none of them are worthy to be call modern. In all Nigerian cities as soon as you go out of the city center or even take a Right hand turn off a beautiful road you will see your self driving through a slum. The only place in Nigeria in which we can call "develop" is the FCT Abuja. And since the FCT is not a state it cant be counted as the neatest state.

In my opinion, coming in a far far far ffffaaaarrrrrr second place from Abuja is Cross Rivers. No other state can come close to it in any terms. Its one of the few states in Nigeria that tourist from around the world come to for vacation. hell I wont even mind nor will i be embarrassed taking my American friend there.

But don't get me wrong, their are slums and poverty in cross rivers, its just not on the same scale as other states.

As for the rest of the states, they all arent impressive, yes they have good areas but overall they are way below standard.

If I had to scale Nigerian "states" in terms of neatness from a scale of 1 to 10 it will go like this: Abuja (not a state) = 10 Cross rivers = 2 the rest ≤ 1

But I know state are developing, In 5 years that list will change for the better.

Who's talking about population density? I'm talking about the size (area) of Lagos compared to Benin and how and why a proper storm water drainage system hasn't been implemented, due to cost. I did use population density as a reference but its wasn't what I was talking about

I never said anything about floods being link to population density so IDK how you thought of that.

I was talking about the solution and why It hasn't been implemented.

Wouldn't the proper comparison be with the geographical mass of the area you are protecting and the scale of the flooding threat? Comparing spending on a per head basis makes no sense.

um . . . . Tackling of the flooding problem has NOTHING to do with population of Lagos state, or Benin. The problem needs to be tackled and I believe last year, the Fg gave about $1 Billion to fight that problem in Lagos. If Lagos needs more from the FG, I am sure it is not a silly approach to go for more. Jeezz!!!

Sorry, I didn't mention in my last post why I'm comparing the two. For starters both have relatively the same Population density. Benin city[1] has a population density of 11250 km2 while Lagos[2] has a population density of 10207 km2. Thats why I was comparing the populations since Benin is just a scaled down Clone of Lagos.

Lagos and Benin also suffer the pains of erosions and flooding, receiving similar amounts of rainfall. They also suffer from the absents of town planning and proper drainage. In summary they both have Identical cons which plague them to the same scale.

To concluded, if Benin city's storm water master plan[3] is going to coast $1 Billion (N150 billion) then Lagos' will cost 10x as much, since its population is ten times bigger. As of right now Lagos cant afford to build a storm water drainage system, It doesn't have the budget. But as Kobo said, They can just ask the FG for more.

I also want to point out that the population of lagos that I posted previously is wrong. Lagos state has a population of 17 million while lagos (city) has a population of 10 million. I mistakenly posted the states numbers instead of the city.

Lets put things in perspective.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has commenced plans for a N150 billion BENIN CITY STORM WATER MASTER PLAN. This master-plan is currently under construction and is design to stop the flooding and erosions in Benin city.

We should note that he had to Lobby to the federal government for him to get additional funding for this project. We should also note that Benin City has a population of 1.1 million people.

Now for the perspective. If Benin City, a population of 1.1 million, with the assistance of the FG, is currently paying N150 Billion ($1billion) for a storm water master-plan Imagine what a place like Lagos a population of 17 million will have to pay for its storm water master-plan. Something more or less to the tune of $17 Billion (N2.5 trillion). In other words, money Lagos does not have.

Fashola cant do everything, and from the looks of it lagos will have this flood problem for a while. Basically, the citizens of Lagos need to stop building houses in flood prone areas and stop illegally blocking drainages. At least stop until lagos State get the situation under control.

Secondly, the police officer in the video said people were 'killing themselves' you can watch it again if you don't remember.

They are not all expensive cars, thats what I said. The reporters makes it sounds as if rich people are the ones who do this while its mainly your average Nigerians that are doing this. You can only see 1 Mercedes in the video and it a 1995–2002 E-class (not 2011) and the rest are average cars you see in nigeria.

You don't need to be rich to do donuts or to even race and you can find the same thing happening in Lagos, Calabar, Port Harcourt etc.

#still don't believe me then name Name 1 expensive car you saw in the video?

BTW I'm against this type of activity, I just want people to get facts right.

First off this video is old, second I haven't heard of people getting killed from these stunts, Probably injured. Third and not last what makes them rich? so you need to be rich in order to street race? since when, just because someone drive a better or modified car doesn't make them rich.

You can find stunts and street races all over nigeria and around the world, nothing special. Dont understand why the reporter acts like its a big deal and makes it sound as if it only occurs in abuja.

Nigeria has been growing since 1999, why are you all surprised. Just proves that many don't even know whats going on in their own country. The main reason for the growth is the private sector in Nigeria and not oil as some people are saying.

while international investor are running to Nigeria to invest you have Brain drain Nigerians going overseas. Then you come on here and say the Lebanese, Indians, Germans etc are in control of almost every business in Nigeria.

Who is the fool, the one that left or the one that came and is making money. Like I always say, Nigeria is the most prosperous place in Africa to start a business, Its a shame many Nigerians are too blind to see it.

In reality Nigeria has to many pointless states. Just like someone said if you take away the monthly federal allocations away, how many of these state can survive on their own.

As a matter of fact a large amount of the 36 states only have 1 major city within the state. And your telling me we need more states?, When so many states are virtually empty?

Nigeria needs to start combining states, 36 states is to much for a country that is a little larger than Texas.

I'm not surprised because its natural, lagos sits at the mouth of the ogun river and many other smaller tributaries. Lagos also sits on a delta and many parts of lagos is below or just above sea level. Flooding has been going on in the area even before the Portuguese arrived. So to blame it on tinubu and/or fashola is just childish. Isn' it the people who built their homes in flood prone areas during the population boom.

Common drains will not fix the flooding lagos has, you'll need a massive engineering feat, constructing flood tunnels, Pump systems and underground silos. All this in an integrated drainage master plan

But the reason why fashion and other governors of lagos haven't done this is because of the cost. Lagos doesn't have the money to build what I wrote above ( ex. $ 10 Billion).

Here is an example of part Tokyo's drainage system, Do you think Lagos has enough cash to build modern drainage systems like this all over the state.

The military should be sent in to exterminate Boko Haram before it grows and becomes a national problem.

Just look at al Qaeda, the Taliban, al shabab, etc. all wont be major threats if they were dealt with and exterminated early on instead of being ignored by governments.

What we need is a full military operation, even if it only takes 5 hours to defeat them.
