Really? Smh.

What even in his comment is "brutally honest" or "life nugget-y?"

Today, guys are saying they're men and they don't care and don't want stuff deemed too 'estrogen-y' and 'feminine', tomorrow they're having a problem with the standards they've created and cosplaying ✨ oppression ✨, instead of addressing the source.
Let's just say the average human being is a hypocrite.

Let us remove women. Why do men not gift one another as well?
In my experience, physical gifts aren't what men exchange amongst themselves, but assistance in the form of interest-free loan, connections etc. That is how I see gifting a fellow man. That said too, men if they can afford it buy items for their male friends who have been of immense help/assistance to them. I wager that men gift fellow men watches on certain occasions.

Sometimes I am tempted to doubt these reports, how can kogi an agrarian and poor state record the highest food inflation in the country, we should have asked what factor is driving the price higher in kogi, is it because most food is imported ? And no
Is it because kogi is difficult to access ? Ans. on the contrary kogi is the easiest state to access in Nigeria as it shares boundaries with 10 states and the FCT
Ok, is it that kogites have high purchasing power ? The answer is no , they don't

So what could be responsible for high cost of food in an agrarian kogi state ?
There has been a flux of investments in the mining sector into Kogi. This has attracted people from outside the state, thus, pushing up demand for certain goods and services. Where the supply is limited, but demand is high, inflation is bound to occur. Also, herdsmen have prevented farmers from ploughing and harvesting their crops resulting in constrained supply.

FamilyRe: How Do We Avoid Future Chaos In The Family by Gerrard59(m): 11:27am On Dec 17, 2023
Scholace:
Good day all

My dad is from a nuclear family of eight. Seven boys and a girl.
Number one mistake: coming from a family with many siblings. I forgive them as na the previous generation.

Their parents are late. My dad owned 8 rooms apartment in his village. He singlehandedly bought the land and raised the building. We reside in Lagos in a rented apartment. Obviously that was the only building owned by my dad. We hardly visit the village, but I've been there twice, likewise my other siblings. My mum and dad are the only ones that frequent there back then, and they're well known. My dad and the sixth child of their parents are the only ones that owned a house. The rest of them live in a rented apartment and had no house to their namew.
Number two mistake: building a house where you don't live, work or do business. Worse is building it in the village rather than the state capital. Which means the value is zero. The nonsensical claim that real estate does not depreciate is nonsensical, as I stated. Real estate depreciates, let alone in Nigeria with an archaic land use act, low level of development and weak enforcement of laws, which make people resort to diabolic means.

The house at the village wasn't occupied by anyone nor let out. Recently, one of the family members from their mother side at the village suggested to allow someone occupied the house. He brought in some people who i learnt were church people. Someone gave my dad info that they want to sell the house. My dad was surprised. We later got info that my dad elder brother claimed he owned the house.
E don happen! Egungun would soon cross the express!

My dad called his elder brother immediately he got the info to confirm what he heard. The so called brother asserted, and he was ruthlessly lashed by my dad. He was surprised by my dad's reaction. Two of my dad other siblings came around to apologise on behalf of their eldest brother outburst. I was around then, i overheard one of them saying it's a family's house. I was like, why are they fighting their eldest brother then?He claimed he owned the house while some claimed it's a family's house.
Does your father have the document to prove it is his rightfully owned land and, thus, his property?

Apparently, my dad discussed this with two of his friends and they both advised he sell off the house and get a piece of land in Lagos or Ogun State and put up a small building on it. They told him if he didn't sell it, the family will take over the house when he kick the bucket, and his children and wife will be thoroughly dealt with if they attempt to be in loggerhead with them. He called one of his friend that reside at Ibadan, he said the same thing as suggested by his two other friends. He also added, if he can get a developer to take over the building because only 4 rooms had been roofed. By doing that, the developer will complete the building and write a will when to recoup their resources and the building taken back from them by we the children
.

His friends are right. Should your dad die today, his elder brother in cahoots with other siblings, would seize that property and deal with you people, legally or as envisaged, diabolically.

The tale about selling the building is dependent on where the property is located. What is the name of the state? No point mentioning the village or local government. How sure is he able to sell the property in the village to find and fund the purchase of land in Lagos or Ogun to build a house? How fast a property is sold at MARKET VALUE is dependent on location. Because the more you people wait, the higher the chances the property would cause bitter rancour in the family. And let me state it explicitly: the moment those people, especially those church people, move in, that is the end. The house is gone!

My mum suggested he sell it and start up a business, considering the fact that things aren't going well financially with him. My immediate younger brother may likely drop out of school due to finances.
Another question: how many are you people in the family as children? Age range? What level in school is your brother? Is he the last child? Abi another dey behind am? Starting a business is not really the issue, but what kind of business. Please note that for the business to thrive, it should run without its revenue (there would be no profit in its nascent stages) touched for the next two years for non-business purposes.

Don't believe anyone who tells you that if you invest N2 million, you will begin generating 20K every day. Revenue is different from profit o.

According to my dad he has really helped his siblings when things were going well for him. He financed his elder brother's wedding, sent his two siblings to school, put some in trade as mechanic and electrician. Sponsored two of his younger siblings wedding ceremony. He linked one of his younger brother's to my mum's brother who happened to be a staff at Mobil. By the grace of God, he got a job at Mobil. That my mum brother is late, he died 2016.
Such is life. That is why people should not born plenty of children left, right and centre. I don talk am tire. If your dad had focused on his financial well-being by building a house far away from the prying eyes of the village, all this for no happen.

Please what steps would you suggest my dad take inorder not to lose his property to his siblings.
Sell the property, the earlier, the better.

I have spent about 16 months in Europe but I have been deeply concerned about my family joining me. As a result of multiple semesters across different countries (presently in France), I have not been able to apply for my family to join. To apply in France, it will take me another 2 years at the earliest before they can join (Mandatory requirement of the host already living in France for 18 months, another 6 months for applications).

I have thought of a post-study visa in Norway (1st semester) but that is just for a year, not long enough to apply to bring in family except I get a job (A big gamble)

I am thinking of applying for a PhD or another Masters in another country that will allow me to bring my family right from the start.
Apologies for the late reply. I saw the mention and promised myself to chip in.

First question, what is the size of your family? How old are you? Your wife? Your children? Range if you decide to be covert about it.

1. UK, Canada, Norway are immediate choices (especially for the English language) but I'm considering the high cost of tuition in addition to other requirements. I don't know if I can come up with such sums in such a short time.
Are you inviting your family to live with you on the basis of living with you or long term relocation? How about schooling? How about your wife's career or education pursuits? Are you pursuing another degree for the purpose of being able to secure residency in these places or is it for academic reasons? What about post-school? What are your prospects in these places? What is your field? professional qualifications and experiences?

2. Is Germany a great choice? (Free but trying to readjust to another foreign language at this point is exhausting for me)
The aforementioned questions matter here too, even if you were moving to the US.
PoliticsRe: Will Abuja Overtake Lagos As The Largest Urban Area In Nigeria Soon? by Gerrard59(m):
Interesting thread, except for the ret@rd malele who could not stop blaming Igbos for developing these areas. How the development of a virgin land by citizens became a crime is befuddling!

As for the main topic, Abuja cannot overtake Lagos. If there is going to be a city that would do such, the state it is situated must be abut to the coast. These would be Calabar, Port-Harcourt, Uyo, Warri etc. Majority of the most populous cities in the world are situated in areas which are contiguous to a large body of water, as this promotes trade.

That is why I am not convinced that Northern Nigeria is more populous than the South. No country in the world has more people living in arid areas than in coastal regions. Only Nigeria has that infamous appellation.

We agree to disagree.

Odibembem:
Oga say what u know. Branch manager is a title, what matters is your grade. U can be an Assistant Manager, Deputy Manager or full Manager. On d average Assistant Managers in a top bank earns N1.1m net monthly. Full managers can earn N1.7m in d least. That's not adding leave allowance which can be 800k. Now to d person earning 23k pounds in d UK, that's less than 2k monthly. Rent alone is 800 pounds for a small apartment. Power utilities will consume 300 pounds. U have road tax for ur car which can be 200 pounds. U have vehicle insurance, driver's licence, council tax monthly, these are not small amounts at d end u don't have have 500 pounds as disposable income. And what will that buy in d UK economy? U are barely managing to survive. The least Nigerian manager takes home his N1.1m, his rent is per annum if he doesn't already have a house and even if it's in Lagos that he pays like N1m, that's about 100k per month. He has no other tax to pay cos PAYEE is taken net, his vehicle and insurance are tiny,d guy is a big boy by any standard. He has NHIS to cover health care for hiimself, wife and 4 kids max. Pls don't even compare as cost of living is far lower in Nigeria. Only problem is harassment and pressure at d work place which can be devastating. That's all, don't be deceived. Nigerian bankers earn well. I spent a long time in that industry

My stance has been on the belief that a bank manager in Nigeria has a lower standard of living compared to a skyscraper cleaner in the UK. I don't believe it for two reasons:

- Apples-to-oranges comparison. It should be cleaner in the UK to cleaner in Nigeria.
- Standard of living on a PPP basis. The bank manager in Nigeria is better off than the cleaner in the UK.

Obviously, a banker (regardless of the role and sector) in the UK outearns his counterpart (banker too) in Nigeria.

You started working as a dishwasher upon entry into the US. My point is, that your class of visa did it. No one who enters via a standard work visa begins to work as a dishwasher in the US. Nigerians don't qualify for the classes of visas which leads to dishwashing jobs. I have no issue with the job, but the narrative that no one can work in the same role as in Nigeria. That is possible, provided they followed the proper immigration routes.

A visit visa leads to dishwashing jobs. Anyone who does not want it should follow structured routes. We have to be honest, explicit and thorough when we put out information to the public.

You are judging income from a nominal GDP perspective. I am doing so from PPP. The Nigerian banker has a higher standard of living than a cleaner in the US. A standard career with benefits. This is why, should he want to relocate/migrate, he aims to replicate the same role/industry in the US as in Nigeria. Just because someone earns dollars in the US does not automatically make the person better than another in Nigeria. What do they do for a living? A McKinsey consultant in the US has a higher standard of living than a counterpart in Nigeria. What you try to imply is that a cleaner in the US has a higher living standard than a McKinsey consultant in Nigeria. I would not accept that one o. It does not follow at all.

Young men should focus on themselves rather than chooking head everywhere in the name of relationship. I never fancied office relationships. You don't sheet where you eat unless you control the entire environment.

Error401:
Do you know how much it costs to run an MBA in London? MBA tuition for most schools in London is not less than 30K GBP. Thats about 45 million Naira only in tuition.
Are you saying that because you earn in Naira, spend in Naira, you do not save in Naira? People who relocated to these countries dont do so permanently.
Most Immigrants do not have the best standard of living, they do not relocate to the UK to live like Dangote. Most people relocate to have a better purchasing power back home. Most of the investments in nigeria are owned by Nigerians in Diaspora, does it mean they live the best life wherever they are?
Again, no matter where you live as an immigrant, your investments are in Naira else you promised yourself not to return home
Please let's focus on the main post: a so-called bank manager is working as a skyscraper cleaner in the UK

You alluded that because a cleaner can save 20 million while working in the UK, then he is better off than a bank manager in Nigeria. I said that is false as you are comparing a bank manager in Nigeria to a cleaner in the UK. That is not the appropriate way to compare. Should the bank manager want to relocate to the same UK, he would aim to be at the same position as he was in Nigeria. Getting an MBA is one way, and he would aim at the top ones. Remember he was a bank manager in Nigeria. LBS is the number one MBA school in the UK.

I maintain my stance that judging using PPP metric, a bank manager in Nigeria lives a better life than a cleaner in the UK. I would not even compare them as it does not make sense. I compare like for like: bank manager in Nigeria to bank manager in the UK.
