A Nigerian born Professor of Biology, Ernest Izevbigie, has been given two patents for bitter leaf-based anti-diabetic and cancer medication in the United States, THISDAY can report. His product may also benefit HIV/AIDS patients, it was learnt.
Izvebigie, a Professor in the area of vernonia amygdalina (bitter leaf) research at Jackson State University, Mississippi, received the first patent Phytochemotherapy for Cancer U.S. Patent 6,713,098 in 2004 and the second 6,848,604 in 2005.
He founded Edobotanics, a company that uses technology at the university to process, extract and standardize compounds from bitter leaf.
Edobotanics now produces nutritional supplements called edoTIDEplus that promotes gastrointestinal, breast and prostate health, THISDAY gathered.
“We found that in using the plant material, some compounds from the extracts were able to inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells,” said the professor.
“Later through collaborative research, we found they were also effective in other tumor cells,” he added.
Although, the formulations are not optimized for diabetes, they provide some health benefits to diabetes patients, he explained.
His research focus is cancer biology and pharmacognosy.
As for HIV/AIDS patients, Izevbigie explained that evidence from cell culture and animal studies research and reports from individuals reveal that bitter leaf formulary supplementation may abate or improve their health conditions or symptoms which include abrosia (wasting away), nausea and vomiting, compromised immune systems etc.
“Since immune suppression and abrosia represent some of the key features of HIV/AIDS pathogenesis, bitter leaf supplement-induced stimulation of the immune system could benefit HIV/AIDS patients,” he stated.
The professor further explained that available data shows that bitter leaf extracts may be effective against Kaposi sarcomas (KS), a tumour caused by Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8).
He said that although KS infection occurs in the general population, the frequency of occurrence among HIV/AIDS patients is higher.
An estimated, 40 per cent of HIV/AIDS sufferers are said to develop KS, which is noted to be more progressive and less responsive to therapy in HIV-positive individuals compared to HIV-negative patients.
Recently, Edobotanics won second place in the University division of the Mississippi Technology Alliance’s Mississippi Business Plan competition.
The competition included 27 companies who presented their plan to some entrepreneurs and investors in the state.
Edobotanics presented a plan for producing and marketing dietary supplements that promote health and wellness.
According to the CEO of the company, Mr. Bruce Deer, “this product supports general health and well being. It is a combination of science and nature for optimum health.”
Izevbigie came to the US from Nigeria in 1982.
His interest in bitter leaf dates back to his childhood days in Nigeria.
He said he watched his grandmother who practised herbal/alternative medicine use bitter leaf to cure patients.
Narrating his research work, he said upon receiving his Ph.D degree in Michigan State University, he pursued a post-doctoral training at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
There, he developed a passion to apply modern scientific techniques to investigate the health benefits of some Nigerian botanical or herbal medicines.
Izevbigie says other researchers have joined his research team since receiving two patents from his exclusive and original work.
Asked about the availability of bitter leaf in the US for his product, he says there is a possibility the plant will be grown outside Nigeria.
The company can also rely on Nigerian contractors, he said.
Jackson State University is a historically black school founded in 1877.
It is located in Jackson, the capital city of the State of Mississippi.

Underground Church Growing in Muslim-Dominated Indonesia

Pentecostals on the tsunami-ravaged coast of Indonesia are experiencing a wave of conversions and healings.

In the strongly Muslim Aceh province of northern Sumatra—where 167,000 people died in the 2004 tsunami—the underground church movement is growing, with Pentecostal congregations thriving.

Indonesia has an official policy of religious tolerance, but in Muslim-dominated areas Christians face open hostility and persecution. In Aceh province, churches must register with the authorities and are not permitted to evangelize. Many Christians choose to meet in unregistered—or underground—churches.

Sumatra is one of the least evangelized places on earth, according to Operation World. But since the tsunami—which wiped out 15 percent of the population of Aceh's provincial capital Banda Aceh—numerous underground churches have put down roots.

Pastor Nico (full name withheld for security reasons) started an underground Pentecostal church four years ago with only six members. Today 90 people from the neighborhood make up the Spirit-filled congregation. They endure persecution for their faith. One church family had rocks thrown through the windows of their home, and another family was forced to relocate because of threats.

"It's very difficult for the Muslims to accept us here," the 34-year-old pastor told Charisma. "If the authorities knew where we meet, they would close us down."
Despite the risks, the congregation is mission minded. "We'd like to go to the homes in this area, to the marketplace, to share about Jesus and start another church," Pastor Nico explained. "We love God, but we also have to love people—even those who don't love us."

One of the church members, Novi (full name withheld), grew up in a Buddhist home, burning offerings of money and incense at her family shrine. Two years ago, a traumatic experience set the 24-year-old Novi on a spiritual quest that led to healing and faith in Christ.

Whenever Novi was close to her husband, she felt a peculiar sensation, which she described as worms wriggling under her skin. "You could actually see something moving under the skin," recalled her husband Fumin.

Deeply distressed, the couple sought help from various sources, including witchdoctors, traditional healers and their Buddhist idols. But Novi's condition worsened, leaving her on the verge of a breakdown. "I thought: 'I'm going to go crazy and die,"' she recalled. "I couldn't sleep. ,  I felt an overwhelming sense of fear."

Novi became convinced the affliction was a spiritual attack. A relative suggested the couple cross the sea in order to "leave the evil behind." In desperation, they flew to another island, but the attacks intensified.

At her wit's end, Novi listened to her sister who had become a Christian. "My sister told me that I should go to the Highest Power for healing—that is, Jesus," Novi told Charisma. "I thought: If Jesus can heal me, I will follow Him forever."

As they prayed together in Jesus' name, Novi felt a "cleansing surge" through her body. A few days later, she felt another attack and cried out to Jesus. Since then, she has never suffered a recurrence. Now her husband is a leader in the church, and their testimony has drawn others to Christ, including his parents, brother and sister-in-law.

The new converts in Aceh's growing underground church include former Muslims like Ernawati (full name withheld). As a little girl growing up in a devoutly Muslim home, Ernawati visited the mosque with her parents and knelt to pray five times a day.

However, she often asked herself: Who is God? Does He really hear my prayers? Her curiosity grew when she saw the crucifixion scene on The Jesus Film, an evangelistic movie produced by Campus Crusade for Christ. "I wanted to know more about this Jesus," she said.

Shortly before Christmas 2004, 30-year-old Ernawati was at home when a man wearing a white robe appeared and said to her: "Do not be afraid."
"Naturally, I was very afraid," Ernawati recalled. "I didn't know who he was ,  and then he disappeared."

Just days later, the tsunami struck. Submerged by the wave, Ernawati cried out: "Jesus ,  save me!" Although she could not swim, she suddenly found herself above water and scrambled to safety.

Thousands drowned that day but she was one of the miraculous survivors. Ernawati gave her life to Jesus and joined the underground church. "Now I know the Truth, and the Truth has set me free," she testifies. -Julian Lukins in Sumatra, Indonesia

THE NEXT BEST THING TO DO

"For every one that asketh receiveth." Luke 11:10

There is nothing more difficult than to ask. We will long and desire and crave and suffer, but not until we are at the extreme limit will we ask. A sense of unreality makes us ask. Have you ever asked out of the depths of moral poverty? "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God . . . but be sure that you do lack wisdom. You cannot bring yourself up against Reality when you like. The next best thing to do if you are not spiritually real, is to ask God for the Holy Spirit on the word of Jesus Christ (see Luke 11:13). The Holy Spirit is the One Who makes real in you all that Jesus did for you.

"For every one that asketh receiveth." This does not mean you will not get if you do not ask (cf. Matt. 5:45), but until you get to the point of asking you won't receive from God. To receive means you have come into the relationship of a child of God, and now you perceive with intelligent and moral appreciation and spiritual understanding that these things come from God.

"If any of you lack wisdom . . ." If you realize you are lacking, it is because you have come in contact with spiritual reality; do not put your reasonable blinkers on again. People say - Preach us the simple gospel: don't tell us we have to be holy, because that produces a sense of abject poverty, and it is not nice to feel abjectly poor. "Ask" means beg. Some people are poor enough to be interested in their poverty, and some of us are like that spiritually. We will never receive if we ask with an end in view; if we ask, not out of our poverty but out of our lust. A pauper does not ask from any other reason than the abject panging condition of his poverty, he is not ashamed to beg. - Blessed are the paupers in spirit.

THE NEXT BEST THING TO DO

"Seek, and ye shall find." Luke 11:9

"Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss." If you ask for things from life instead of from God, you ask amiss, i.e., you ask from a desire for self-realization. The more you realize yourself the less will you seek God. "Seek, and ye shall find." Get to work, narrow your interests to this one. Have you ever sought God with your whole heart, or have you only given a languid cry to Him after a twinge of moral neuralgia? Seek, concentrate, and you will find.

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters." Are you thirsty, or smugly indifferent - so satisfied with your experience that you want nothing more of God? Experience is a gateway, not an end. Beware of building your faith on experience, the metallic note will come in at once, the censorious note. You can never give another person that which you have found, but you can make him homesick for what you have.

"Knock, and it shall be opened unto you." "Draw nigh to God." Knock - the door is closed, and you suffer from palpitation as you knock. "Cleanse your hands" - knock a bit louder, you begin to find you are dirty. "Purify your heart" - this is more personal still, you are desperately in earnest now - you will do anything. "Be afflicted" - have you ever been afflicted before God at the state of your inner life? There is no strand of self-pity left, but a heartbreaking affliction of amazement to find you are the kind of person that you are. "Humble yourself" - it is a humbling business to knock at God's door - you have to knock with the crucified thief. "To him that knocketh, it shall be opened." http://www.myutmost.org/06/0609.html

Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus
Daily let me go;
Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,
More of grace to know.

Refrain

O deeper yet, I pray,
And higher every day,
And wiser, blessèd Lord,
In Thy precious, holy Word.

Deeper, deeper, blessèd Holy Spirit,
Take me deeper still,
Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus,
And His perfect will.

Refrain

Deeper, deeper! though it cost hard trials,
Deeper let me go!
Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,
Let me fruitful grow.

Refrain

Deeper, higher, every day in Jesus,
Till all conflict past,
Finds me conqu’ror, and in His own image
Perfected at last.

Refrain

Deeper, deeper in the faith of Jesus,
Holy faith and true;
In His pow’r and soul exulting wisdom
Let me peace pursue.

Discover Magazine has shown that "Two of the most convincing studies have proved conclusively that sexual orientation in men has a genetic cause."

New Scientist has shown that "geneticists may have explained how genes apparently linked to male homosexuality survive" and "Mothers' genetic skew linked to gay sons."

LiveScience has shown that "The arrangement of a mother's genes could affect the sexual orientation of her son, according to a new study."

Scientific American has shown that "Having Older Brothers Increases a Man's Odds of Being Gay."

WebMD has shown that magnetic resonance imaging studies reveal key differences in the brains of gay and straight men and women that could add to the understanding of the biology of homosexuality.

Dr. Francis Collins of the Human Genome Project said "The evidence we have at present strongly supports the proposition that there are hereditary factors in male homosexuality — the observation that an identical twin of a male homosexual has approximately a 20% likelihood of also being gay points to this conclusion, since that is 10 times the population incidence." as well as "No one has yet identified an actual gene that contributes to the hereditary component, but it is likely that such genes will be found in the next few years."

And even when you saw this happening, you refused to believe him and repent of your sins.

Luke 18:9-14 (New Living Translation)

Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector
9 Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: 10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer[a]: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don’t cheat, I don’t sin, and I don’t commit adultery. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Luke 18:14 — "I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: For every one that exalteth himself, shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted."

Mamamia18, your story is really pathetic and I fully sympathize with you. However you seem to have been a victim of spiritual ignorance and an apparent prisoner of unfounded fear which the devil and heartless people exploit. You may call me for a firm instruction, please. God bless you. My number is 07039308817.
what other instructions does she need in private?
mamamia18:
dear all
i would like to discuss about Pastor Chris. I have been attending his church 4 about 6 months and i will not lie, attending there has changed my life. However, i am slightly confused about some issues. firstly, from what i have noticed people in his church seem to "worship him" alot. I have never seen anything like this before. Also his material WHICH IS FIRST CLASS costs a lot of money. From other people i can get a dvd and a book for the price of one of his audio cds. it seems that he is a very good business man. Also i have noticed that people in the church only marry people from the church, that is also very strange. in addition to this, i once went to a friends church and my cell leader told me i was not allowed to go to another persons church, unless they have something going on. finally, my church told me that if you do not give money to the church that you could die, as god is looking for a seed offering. in addition to this, i women, who i would say is a big women of god (as she is an evangelist and a propestest) has on 4 occassions asked me for money. on the first she asked to borrow 150 pounds, which i told her dont worry about. i fort that was the last time she would ask me for money. however, the next time she told me a sin that i had committed - which was true and then the next day asked me for 40 pounds because her tyre on her car was flat. the next day she said that her tyre on her car had been slit and she needed an extra 70 pounds which again i gave to her as i was told seeds could be the difference between life or death. The day after that - well she asked me for a amount which i will not disclose which again i gave to her as she said she needed to pay some debt off. please bear in mind that i am a student and the money which i gave her is out of my late fathers money which he left for my school fees.

i am not trying to diss the church or anybody in it, i just want peoples opinions on what i have said as i do not know whether or not the devil is trying to mislead me,

sorry if anybody is offended by this post
Lord have mercy on that woman. i bet she is another greedy nigerian not bold enough to get a gun or send out her agents using God and the devils weapon of fear. you owe yourself a duty of running from her.

@mamamia18,

Some of the problems you'd pointed out are not peculiar to only one church - many churches have this thing about affinity and loyalty, so they frown at their members marrying members of other churches, or participating in their activities (worship, Bible studies, evangelism, etc).

However, if anyone is asking you for money and claiming all sorts of things thereby, please know that such tendencies are ungodly. It's not my style to resort to castigations or aspersions of people, but as a believer grows there's a maturity that opens one's eyes to these things. Giving is good, we know there are blessings attached to our giving; but giving under duress with claims of "death" upon one's life is not the Gospel of Christ at all. It does not matter whatever spiritual gift or office anyone may claim - prophet/prophetess, healing evangelists, etc - using one's gift to twist your arm to give is an indication that something is fundamentally wrong and you need to face up to it.

Abuses of this nature come through several routes and means. In your case, it was labelled as "seed offering". Nothing wrong in seed offering itself, and the Bible affirms that aspect of our giving. However, when someone takes what is actually true in itself and applies it to false motives and ends, it is time to close the door against such abuses in your life. Even though giving in church is healthy and part of our lifestyle as Christians, you were not raised to be responsible for paying any prophetess' debts or bills. If they are in need, they can declare openly in church through appropriate means so that their needs might be met; but to go behind and begin to task you is an indication of an abuse that God does not sanction.

Be bold and do not be afraid to put an end to such leaks in your life. Such occurences should not discourage your giving in a healthy manner, even if you are led to give seed offering or 'sow' in a healthy way in your stewardship in church. Remember, a curse that you do not deserve will never set upon your life - never! Proverbs 26:2 - "As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come."

God give you wisdom and bless your walk in Jesus' Name.
God bless you for this. it is good to know you have a sound mind body and spirit. well done. there are many enemies of the gospel of Jesus Christ about.

Ex-BoyFRND:
Was I too harsh?

Hello Bleep,

Good morning. Good you think you 'left' and not the other way around. Kindly note that you were engineered to 'leave'. It took approximately 2 weeks to work - your typhoid prolonged it, it would have been sooner. I most certainly could have gotten you back sooner without even breaking a sweat. 20 missed calls before I'll pick, zero text messages, calls from 3 times daily to zero. Did I touch you the last time you slept in my house? I ignored you into nothingness.

You see, my problem with you is not really trust - it's more about respect. You began losing it bit-by-bit when I regularly caught you in all those stupid lies you told. The first time you hit a record low was when you descended to the gutter to steal from me (I don't even know the other ones I didn't find out - did you know that I was always hiding money anytime you came around?).

Eventually, you lost all of it when I learnt you also steal things in school and that you sleep with all kinds of people for money.

Believe me, if your most attractive attribute is being a cheap lay, then no guy will dig you for the long term. I scored you in less than a week, Obinna in a couple of days or less and then the infamous Chief Ikemba in less than an hour. What does this say about you??

I don't even know the "access" records of: Chidiebere (I know he kissed you on the first day you met), Victor (the one you saved in your phone with Vivian Eke), the Owerri guy that came to visit you in my house, the Masscom guy, the other guy you slept with in Abia Hotels, your lesbian girlfriend, the Miss Lawsan guys who definitely had a piece of you before giving you an unmerited award plus the host of other people that I don't even know about]. Let's take a bet, in six months time you'd have gone 'International'.

You misguidedly think that you're above average attractive. What you really are is easy. You know yourself better than I do, give or take 2 days from now, a new random dude is already shining your conga and you'll foolishly think you're hot! Well, who doesn't like awuff? Know this: Once you're cheap, no matter how ugly you are, there are always guys that will score and dump you. Can't you just stay a single week without a guy? Are you possessed? Don't you know your life is still very much ahead of you??

Guys are attracted to easy lays because they are just that, easy. You get sex from them faster. Once we're serious though, we know the kind of people we want - don't ever forget that. I knew girls like you back then in FUTO, they really felt tight with themselves in year one through year two, then GBAM! They lost. Everybody now took them for granted - they were treated like other guys. They lost the Lady-Treatment pass - we just took them like cheap whores. Now, why would one treat a girl like a lady when you know she has slept with half the dudes in school for: food, petty amounts of money and from itchy privates?? Not to talk of a shitload of other people outside school. I know you've already created a growing reputation for yourself in your school for being lascivious and excessively loose. Consequently, you must have lost a lot of respect and will continue to lose more - from the direction you are moving, you've not even started. You've still got plenty more stories scandalous stories ahead of you. Shey you told me that people now look at you somehow - it's just beginning.

In the end, you will see that the girls you look at as being foolish right now will win. If you don't eventually change that is.

May God preserve girls with the kind of character that Uzoma has. Am really just saddened by the grim fact that she'll probably lose most of it by associating with morally bankrupt persons like you. Don't worry though, I won't date her. Yes, I adore her and I miss her a lot too. But I wouldn't act on it because I am not like you and it wouldn't be fair of me - you'd most likely kill yourself if I do.

You will never know how deeply you hurt her by sleeping with Obinna her first-ever boyfriend. Of course you lack the capacity for understanding in that regard. Do you know that I think there's nothing you presently can't do - no matter how base and unnacceptable? You really do lack the tiniest shred of moral restraint. It's only God that can save you now.

I strongly wish you'd re-evaluate yourself and maybe adopt some much needed sanity into your life.

It is said that it's easier to fight a known and declared enemy than an unknown one and that a problem known is half solved. In one word the problem with your life is GREED. Grotesque, pulsating-green-eyed greed. A good example is Uzoma's Obinna. Did you have to sleep with him? Why didn't you try someone else instead of your best-friend's boyfreind? BTW, do you think obinna said he didn't want commitment from you because he doesn't want a steady girlfriend? Obviously, you meant only cheap sex to him. He certainly knew you have Zero Long Term Value and so didn't want you.

Finally, pray to God you eventually find a guy who would respect and adore you as I initially did. Wouldn't really matter though cos if you continue as you are, he'll most definitely leave you too. Sad fact is, guys like me come along once in a very long time. Keyphrase: Very long time.

All the best though. Hope you learn from your life so far. Wish you a beautiful, splendid & sun-filled life.

Your Ex. Bleep.

NOTE: You really rilled me up by saying you left me. I would have let sleeping dogs lie, I would have given you what you deserved: SILENCE.
