Press Statement:

Voice, Data Services Affected by Undersea Cable Cuts Restored

Following the disruption on March 14, 2024, which affected data and voice services due to cuts in undersea fibre optics along the coasts of Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal, we are pleased to announce that services have now been restored to
approximately 90% of their peak utilization capacities.

All operators who were impacted by the cuts have taken recovery capacity from submarine cables which were not impacted by the cuts, and have thus recovered approximately 90% of their peak utilisation capacities.

Mobile Network Operators have assured the Commission that data and voice services would operate optimally pending full repairs of the undersea cables as they have managed to activate alternative connectivities to bring back the situation to normalcy.

We extend our appreciation to telecom consumers for their patience and understanding during the downtime caused by the undersea fibre cuts.

Influencer bags two years imprisonment for reciting Islamic prayer before eating pork in Indonesia

A TikTok influencer has been sentenced to two years imprisonment in Indonesia for reciting an Islamic prayer before eating pork in a viral video.

In the video, Lina Mukherjee cringes as she utters a Muslim prayer that translates to 'in the name of God' before consuming crispy pork skin.

The 33-year-old was reported by a resident in March for the video, which amassed millions of views. The video was widely criticised in the Muslim-majority country, DailyMail reports.

She was sentenced on Tuesday, September 19, after being found guilty of “spreading information aimed at inciting h@tred against religious individuals and specific groups” at a court in the South Sumatra city of Palembang.

Pork is forbidden under Islam, which is the dominant religion in Indonesia. Mukherjee identifies as a Muslim and her actions were condemned by conservative groups including the country’s top Muslim clerical body, the Indonesian Ulema Council, which issued a ruling calling the video blasphemous.

She was also fined 250 million rupiah ($16,200) for which her jail term would be extended by three months if it was not paid.

The Army must show restraint and use Intel to pick the killers of these gallant men. Drones and reconnaissance aircraft platforms from the Nigerian Air Force have in the recent past been used to gather real-time Intel on terrorist locations with a great deal of accuracy.

Indeed, I noticed those two Yoruba words too.
Ere (profit) and Ologbo (cat)... Very uncanny.

The people of Ogbaland in Rivers State say they historically migrated from Benin, and the name of their progenitor who came to what is now Ogba is named Okoya. The current king in Ogba is called an Oba, but used to be called Eze.

People indeed migrated in centuries past within and outside the area now called Nigeria, so, I'm not surprised at the claim by the Ogba people. Of course, due to acculturation, they would have absorbed some loan words from nearby communities different from their original ethnic group that came from Benin over the hundreds of years.

Thanks for this. I wonder where the false narrative came from. She comes from a wealthy background and was a banker in IMB before she ventured into fashion on a classy level....like Copperfield and Sofisticat of those days. Of course she sewed for the high and mighty. That's how she got to know Maryam.

People forget that oil wells were mostly allocated to men who either sold or abandoned their licences. With her level of exposure, she rose to the occasion and succeeded. She deserves praise not humiliation by anyone. She has remained humble and generous. May God in his infinite mercy heal her. May He guide and strengthen her to weather the storms and live her life in peace.
@delpee,

You're welcome.

Tbh with you, the online and offline FALSE narratives about Mrs. Folorunso Alakija is the creation of the younger generation of misogynistic, ethnic bigots. The digital trail is out there online and this misinformation was started by younger Ibos who had sworn to damage the image of folks of Yoruba descent online and offline as part of their hate speech and propaganda due to the post-Nigerian Civil War victimhood. There are also ethnic-based secessionist and propaganda Websites where these youngsters from the East of Nigeria go to and they read these FAKE stories about a supposed Mrs. Alakija who allegedly slept with IBB and Abacha to get the deep offshore oil wells in the early 1990s. These are all PURE lies regurgitated by creeps and narcissists. Mike Adenuga, Femi Otedola, and a few prominent folks have also been victims of defamation by these creeps just to lower or downplay the good image and successes of these USD multimillionaire and billionaires, while praising their own Ibo kinsmen as being better. Nairaland and other online platforms are littered with these kinds of horrible threads that contain criminally defamatory posts.

The beauty of the Internet is that these criminally defamatory posts can easily be tracked by Internet-savvy people like me using advanced tools.

Mrs. Folorunso Alakija too will have to take ACTION to deal severely with these boys who spread fake information about her and defamed her for years. That would act as a deterant to others when 10 to 20 of them are charged to court. The FBI was able to track the online fraudster, Obinwane Okeke (Invictus Obi) based on the posts he made right here on Nairaland a few years back. So, the Internet is NOT anonymous like some think.

I must commend YOU for mentioning other fashion brands that were popular back from the early 1980s onwards in your post. It was as if you were reading my mind, but I chose NOT to mention the likes of DAKOVA (David Kolawole Vaughan), Latris, Sofisticat, and more because I didn't want my original post on this thread to be too long. It's good to still see many folks like you here on NL who witnessed real-time events back from the 1970s, 1980s till now.

This would help to keep online and offline misinformation by the younger folks in check.

Have an eventful day ahead.

Ciao.

I'm curious, why aren't these histories well documented so that they are easily retrievable for future references? It's bad that to refute mendacious and to an extent defamatory claims by others, we rely on personal anecdotes.
@YoshihideSuga
The histories are documented in magazines and newspapers from the 1970s, 1980s to the 1990s, books such as autobiographies, biographies, and on Websites owned by Mrs. Folorunso Alakija and others.

The FACT is that some creeps deliberately make these defamatory claims based on ethnic bigotry and misogyny which can easily be tracked online.

Second, a simple online search on credible Websites would have unearthed more accurate information on Folorunso Alakija and others, but some younger folks are too lethargic or lazy to do the research, so, the simply go with beer palor stories and false rumors.

2006 when buhari became a president. I know i studied his body language and advice Nigerians on how to survive on this thread. https://www.nairaland.com/2811049/how-survive-2016-expected-economic

Some called me a prophet of doom, but when Buhari started dealing with them, the started to edit their post and called me a prophet. I am not a prophet. As an igbo business man, I only have the ability to see the future base on data available to me.

This year January told my oga a Yoruba who is a nairalander here to store food. He said no that he want to use his money to buy a contruction equipment for rental. I tried all I can to discourage him because I know in time like this contruction will not move but he refused. I even beg him to store the food and resale it by July and still buy the equipment with change he refused and went ahead to buy the equipment. Till now he has not rent out this equipment. Cement has increased and no chance breaking even the cost of this machine in the nearest future.

I told him I want to buy food he started laughing at me. Even jokingly called my wife to discourage me. Their laugh did not move me. I came online to start learning about food storage. I spent 2 day and night to study food storage. I can in contact with a good hausa friend on this nairaland. His user name is shariff84. Who help me buy food from. The north. I also get another woman from benue state to by for me. All my storage cost me about 5miill

I bought this food last month and within this January/ February some of the food have double while my friend is yet to make any rent. eg beans garri, rice, yarm etc.

What am I trying to say

We Igbos are mostly traders. As trader you are very closer to market data and trend. A trader can easily analyze and focast the likely future price of good unlike a civil servant. A hausa man is also in a good position to focus the future price of Agriculture but they don't because everything is the will of God, and beliefs that When the time comes God will provide.

To average igbo man everything is about business
To housa man everything is about religion
To a Yoruba man everything is about entertainment.
The supposed advice you gave to your friend was in order.

Your post made some sense UNTIL you posted in the last 2 paragraphs and stated that Yorubas (who are over 50 million people in terms of population) only know "entertainment" while Ibos are traders, and that Hausas of over 70 million don't know anything but religion and the "will of God" even though they are into agriculture.

That comment you made portrayed you as as being boastful or a braggart and is insulting and misleading! But I will counter what you posted here with REAL facts so that others are NOT misled.

Second, there are many Yoruba folks that have been into the food or agricultural storage business for many decades, even for centuries by travelling from the North to Western Nigeria OR Western Nigeria to Niger Republic or from the West to other African countries to buy and sell agri commodities as big time traders.
There are many Yoruba business people in the far North of Nigeria such as Kano, Kaduna, Niger, Jos, and in Funtua. In Funtua for instance, there are Yorubas living there for many decades now called Yarbawan Funtua (Funtua Yorubas) who are into big time trading. You would not easily know some of them are Yorubas until you are told because they have blended into those Hausa communities and speak fluent Hausa. Many Yorubas who are Muslims are able to blend in faster and integrate into the Northern communities. These are facts that I have gleaned from reading about the economic and business histories of global communities and ethnic groups.

There is also a huge Yoruba community in Ghana that founded Makola market in Accra, Ghana, which is the biggest market in Accra. Makola is a market that was named after Mokola market in Ibadan. For over 300 years now, Yorubas were involved in long-distance trading between Oyo Empire and the Ashanti Empire so, that is how Yorubas and their descendants first got to Ghana area. [Even the Ga ethnic group who are indigenes of Accra are of Yoruba bloodline and their king paid a royal visit to the Ooni of Ife in 2022 to maintain the historic bond between the Gas and Yorubaland where their forefathers came from, and the story was even posted here on Nairaland].

There's also close to 3 million Yorubas officially in Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire) doing international business, trading, and working as professionals. Some have even become Ivorian citizens and many are originally indigenes of Ejigbo Kingdom in Osun State and nearby Yoruba towns and they speak French in that town despite NOT being on an international border. I flew to Abidjan from Lagos in 1988 for the first time on a Nigeria Airways Airbus A310 and was surprised to see a lot of Yorubas in the very beautiful city of Abidjan and the Yorubas have been there for over 100 years due to long-distance trading activities that took them there.

So, the last two paragraphs of your post are condescending and it shows that you DON'T know the histories of Yorubas, Hausas, and other ethnicities very well for you to conclude that others don't know about trading or business. Some of you folks of Ibo origin should stop being boastful and insular by thinking that you are the only ones that are traders or have rich people. Other ethnic groups are rich and are into big time trading, import and export, but they don't brag or boast about these things. (All ethnic groups have their own share of rich and poor folks too based on the fact that people take advantage of opportunities faster than others).

Last but not least, I have originally been a member of Nairaland since 2005 and I know that the first food storage guy and storage training I EVER saw on Nairaland was from a Yoruba Nairalander and even many Yorubas on Nairaland who are into big time food storage business, also source food items from the North and elsewhere.

Lanrelagboi:
Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has directed that 'Ounje Eko' food markets should commence discounted sale of food items across the five divisions of Lagos effective from Sunday, March 17, 2024.

The food items - rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, pepper, among others - will be sold at 25% discount to residents.

In order to prevent sharp practices and ensure the foodstuff reaches a large number of Lagosians, a voucher system will be introduced as the pilot scheme kicks off.

Independent payment solution providers and food vendors have been identified and carefully selected to operate the process. They will also provide real-time data on the exercise for monitoring.

For the purpose of transparency, prices of the items have also been listed. A 5kg bag of rice would sell for N5,325 while 1kg goes for N1,065; 5kg bag of Beans - N6,225 while 1kg would sell for N1,245. Prices of other staple food items will also be made available through various media outlets.

The markets will be open at 27 locations in Ikeja; six in Lagos Island; nine in Ikorodu; five in Epe; and 10 in Badagry divisions.

Mr. Governor has called on all Lagosians to cooperate with the operators at the various locations, monitor the process, and provide feedback through official channels of the Lagos State Government.

In just three years, the young man will have a wife, a plot of land worth N1million, a Tokunbo car, a TV, sofa, bed, etc in his one-bedroom house.

Give N1m to most university graduates and watch them buy Samsung Galaxy phones and several pairs of skinny jeans, take their numerous girlfriends out, take selfies and post them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

In less than two years, they will be buying Indomie on credit from the secondary school dropout and paying rent or staying in their parents' house.

The question is:
DOES EDUCATION BREED WASTE, ARROGANCE, GULLIBILITY AND STUPIDITY?

Education does not necessarily breed any of the above, but it makes you look down on possibilities as "not befitting my status".

Unemployment is actually higher amongst the educated than amongst the uneducated.

The uneducated are more innovative and ready to do what the educated will refer to as "dirty, menial jobs".

And before you know it, the uneducated guy will be needing an Accountant to manage his finance books and will now employ the educated guy!

That is the reality of our society!

A couple of years ago several of the US military's most highly trained soldiers were ambushed in the Niger Republic and cut to pieces by Boko Haram terrorist gunmen who attacked their truck out in the desert where there is little to no cover or concealment available.

People on this thread keep saying "they don buy market". Only people who don't know the people of the South South say this. Especially the ijaws.

The military don't fuuuck with them. The military only intimidate people in the SW and SE. They don't Bleep with the North and SS.

These guys were ambushed in a creek. SS is filled with creeks that are deadly to outsiders, including the military.

We all saw the way the Nigerian Delta Avengers blew out the brains of the Navy team that went near them a few years ago.
No big deal about dealing with criminal elements among the Ijaws based on past historical events. Yes, the creeks of the Niger Delta are vast, but essentially, the amnesty program had something to do with the air, land and sea components of the Nigerian Military not going full throttle against these guys. There are powerful air surveillance platforms that can smoke these guys out in the Military. Watch the video of Operation Awatse of July 2016 that led to the destruction of Ijaw criminal elements who also engaged in brutal kidnappings, rapes, murders, pipeline vandalisms in the South West being smoked out of Arepo in Ogun State among other places by the Nigerian Air force.

First off, Gbaramatu in Delta State was leveled down (on the orders of the former President Yar'Adua) by the Nigerian Military after Government Ekpemupolo who is otherwise known as Tompolo and his goons killed many soldiers in an unprovoked manner. It was the amnesty program that saved Tompolo's arse.

Second, Odi in Bayelsa too was unfortunately leveled by the Military during the Presidency of OBJ. Likewise Zaki-Biam in Benue State.

Even in the creeks of Lagos, Ogun, and Ondo States, the Ijaw pipeline vandals, kidnappers and robbery gangs who held the South West to ransom and operated freely in the Arepo area and other parts of Ikorodu and Epe, for instance during former President Goodluck Jonathan's government (leading to these Ijaw criminal elements killing 10 DSS officials in 2015 in the creeks of Arepo in Ogun) where BRUTALLY CRUSHED in July to August 2016 by the Nigerian Air force and other Military arms on the orders of former President Mohammed Buhari after the Ijaw criminals kidnapped a first-class Oba of Ibaland (Oniba of Iba) in Lagos State.

Those among the Ijaw, rotten, criminal elements constituting themselves into a nuisance were smoked out and since then, there has been peace.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) again today struck at criminal hideouts and camps harbouring pipeline vandals at AREPO and environs. The latest air strike is in continuation of the aerial bombardment commenced by the NAF on Thursday 28 July 2016 to rid the affected areas of pipeline vandals and other criminal elements.

The ongoing air operations is aimed at providing air support for the Joint Task Force recently set-up by the Defence Headquarters to dislodge pipeline vandals in the South West region of the Country in an operation codenamed OPERATION AWATSE.

The Naira ended last week on a positive note as it continued its appreciation against the US Dollar at the foreign exchange market.

FMDQ data showed that the Naira appreciated to N1,602.75 on Friday from N1608.98 recorded on Thursday.

This represents a N6.23 gain compared to the N1,608.98 recorded the previous day.

The development comes despite the USD transactions plunged by 44.7 per cent to $137.43 million from $248.75 million on Thursday.

At the parallel market, the Naira traded between N1,610 and 1,620 per USD.

DAILY POST reports that all through last week, the Naira had settled at an average of N1,608 per USD.

On Thursday, the Central Bank of Nigeria in a circular warned that commercial banks should desist from profiting through Naira revaluation.

Recall that between June last year and March 15 2024, CBN had floated the Naira twice which saw the Country’s currency trading at N1,602.75 per USD from N460 in May 2023.

Like I was in cash converters in the uk one time and this man came in to pawn this nice huge gold bar. It was a beautiful sight to behold. I think he got 6000 pounds on that day
I've been reading about folks in Nigeria NOT being able to gain access to the major banking apps and even connect seamlessly to the Internet... especially MTN. I read here on NL that there's been issues with the underwater cables passing through West Africa and that has affected South Africa as in terms of banking and mobile telephony as well.

Hope this isn't some kind of terror attack like what's going on around Yemen with the undersea cables being disrupted by those Houthis of Yemen.

Yes Sukkot, you're spot on. It's far better than any crypto. Osun is the epicenter of gold mining in Yorubaland, while the bandit-ridden Zamfara is a major mining hub for artisanal gold mining. There's a gold processing company that was launched in Osun not too long ago. The Central Bank in Nigeria during the last government also presented some gold bars to the last President. The aim of the CBN was to start buying the raw gold from the artisans and converting them to gold bars instead of having non-Nigerian artisanal miners smuggle them of with no value to Nigeria. Ghana is another hub for gold but you have to get licenced and make sure you're not cheated at the actual mining sites 'cos there are fake gold nuggets in the industry. So, there are tests you have to perform to certify that the gold and/or silver are genuine.

This is the time to hold on to that metal 'cos the price is high. Second, China and India are the major users of gold.

If the guy who was at Cash Converters had waited even longer, he would have got more than the 6000 pounds he was offered. That's how far silver and gold have risen in value.

I'll post some links on your thread later today on the subject matter.

Below is the undersea cables networks:

The late monarch was A PhD holder and former Senator. Very brilliant.

Senator Ladoja is in the civil line. The next will come from Military line (Oba Olakulehin), then after him will be Senator Ladoja. A peaceful and predictable system.
A predictable rotational system of Obaship between the 2 ruling lines: Military line (Balogun) and the Civil line (Otun).

That's very interesting.

Thanks to Africa Web TV. American economist Professor, Jeffrey Sachs exposes how America, its Western allies, the CIA and the defence industry have rigged the system to keep Africa from being prosperous. It is a stunning expose and rebuke to the present world order.

True that.
It is what it is. The U.S. and her European allies have indeed been weakened economically while the economies of Russia and her allies boom.

The Russian-Ukraine War has become an unintended albatross on the U.S. and her key allies due to the economic negatives it has spun.
