Plateau State indigenes used to be enthusiastic about the army. But in recent times we were told that they haven't been responding like before.

Palm oil is over adulterated with a mixture that makes it looks reddish.
If you buy already grounded egusi, ogbono; its mixed with fine grained garri.
If you buy already cut vegetable; you have more than one type of veggie in that cut.

Kpomo/Kanda, is soaked in formalin to make it look bigger.
Cattle towel/assorted parts are soaked in smelling dirty water to make them expand .

As children, we had hardwood flooring at home. Each Saturday, the steward would go down on all fours, apply polish to the floor and then shine it with the cut edge of a dry coconut husk. Watching him do it established the limits of my love for parquet floors. I'm sure there must be more modern ways of achieving the same effect though.

Hardwood flooring tiles are used for flooring in the U.S. It is simply layers of plywood that are glued together in some cases.(Not sure if it is in Nigeria, but I know in Primary School we were told plywood is gotten from Sapele).
Laminate flooring tile on the other hand, is simply a image or picture of wood that is glued to a fiberboard or plank. Laminates nowadays look and feel like real wood, but it is just a high quality picture of the real wood.

Hardwood are very durable but cannot be installed in bathrooms or areas of high humidity because they can warp. Laminates can be installed almost anywhere.

Yes, when we were primary school children AT&P in Sapele produced plywood. Now we import a lot of what we use. I wonder which, if any, company produces plywood in Nigeria today.

Many of the roads in Jos are tarred. There aren't many painted taxis, more of kabu-kabu. Kekes rule in the more central parts of the town. Buses ply limited routes.

The weather varies but is generally cooler than what I experience in Abuja, Lagos or Ibadan. Right now the harmattan is here and the afternoons are hot ( 34degrees) but it is very cool indoors or under some form of shade.

The naira has more value here than in many places down south but I have seen an increase in prices of vegetables which is possibly linked to inflation. A basket of A-grade tomatoes which we bought for 6k at the tomato market last month would have cost us 1.5k last year. We are waiting to see if the prices will reduce going in to January.

Cucumber, cabbage, green pepper etc are cheap though not like before.

Hotels here are as expensive as elsewhere.

Jos is a small community. The crisis has spoilt the interaction it used to enjoy and it appears itis gone for good. But you won't feel you are a statistic here. We live on an estate with a good mix of ethnic/ religious groups and I see us all seeking a peaceful living.

As we go about the city, we recognize students from the university working at jobs ostensibly to put themselves through school. That says something to us about the income levels here. In Lagos, for example, some students probably work but you wouldn't know them. Here you meet them in the bakery or restaurant or at the filling station.

We generally get a good supply of electricity, at least 23 hours daily where I live. It would cost a lot to live like we do in many other cities. We definitely have a better quality of life here than we did elsewhere.

You can get by with English or pidgin; a friend of ours has lived here and done business for over 25 years but I think acquiring Hausa is an asset.

Healthcare costs are relatively cheaper here than in Abuja, Lagos etc. And there are at least three major institutions offering healthcare services.

Artisans tend to be poor in skills from our experience. Watch out for the same crooked ways you find elsewhere.


Security is very important now so you watch the areas you move in, and pray not to be in the wrong place when the crisis erupts.

The aesthetics of Jos must be mentioned. Green- covered hills in the rainy season give way to the brown rocks as the harmattan sets in. Wild sunflowers and other plants give a picture you won't find elsewhere. During the rainy season too, every available space is taken up by crops reminding you that this is an agrarian state.

It's the reason why you find yourself doing some gardening/farming at home and enjoying it.

All in all, Jos is a nice place to live in. A youth corper we know came from Lagos, went back home and is back here, to stay.

I'll always blame them. If they were in saner climes, they'd have been arrested. Do you know what's like to be abused verbally consistently? It's worse than physical abuse. Like someone said up there, our judicial system is bad.

Em. My friend is almost 60, married, and is a grandad. He is the managing partner of a successful law firm but earns a meagre salary.

When his aged boss shows up from time to time, he is shouted at, reminded that he is an employee and told he knows nothing.

He takes it because he has no better option. Would he advise a client in a similar situation to sue his employer? I don't think so.

Thank you. I remember my father driving us around a small town in the South-South where we lived at the time. He pointed out young men and women who were on the streets with mental illness, and underlined the fact that their situation was due to the use of marijuana. He was in a field which meant he had the needed information.

The outing was meant to help us decide to avoid the drug. Unfortunately, it failed for a sibling whose life has been ruined by his use of marijuana.

The other name for sniper is dichlovors which is a preservative for storing beans worldwide. I think its just some few years ago that the EU lifted it ban on importation of Nigerian beans. Initially, Nigerian beans was banned because the concentration of dichlovors was far above the standard used worldwide, which has health implication especially that of the GIT. But, seems we finally comply to the world standard concentration for storage. Please don't be misled but informed

Thank you for showing the world how heartless most of these our governors are, that road is a very busy road and along those road are companies but the government will not allow those companies to do the road because of their selfish interest.

Someone who should know told us that the companies got together and agreed to fix the road. When they met the state government with their proposal, they were told to give the funds to the government so it would fix the road itself.

The companies backed off.

The nigerian army is overhyped. The measure of their bravery and ruggedness should be against equally armed group.
They were acting tough against people throwing stones but I'm sure they could never face these people or the protesters they were harassing in the east if they are all equally armed.
These acts of aggression against defenseless people make me lose respect for them. I would have been impressed if they were decimating boko haram with such zeal as they display when attacking unarmed protesters.
We shouldn't be hypocritical but stand for justice irrespective of religious, ethnicity or political leanings.
