But ewure and ewu is exception to this rule as much as oruka and olaaka. To say odion is odiyan is not cognate either. This guy is one impossible fellow.

This is how hypnotism work: the hypnotist take what you have, promise you something much better, but ultimately failed to deliver or gives a fluke for the real thing.

You can't blame the hypnotic because you agreed with him that what you have is inadequate. So he supplies nonsense instead. It's what he has that he's giving.

Cognate is not rocket science.

Concept, definition, examples. That's scientific method of teaching adults. Concept, what it's not and what it ought to be doesn't explain in-depth understanding of the concept but bests about the jungle.

Any crazy approach that assume itself to be the almighty, taking knowledge away and replacing it with such a complicated explanation is an escape tactics finding somewhere to hide.
The dictionary definition you posted said : cognate - allied by birth, of the same family, proceeding from the same root

Not "looking alike"

I demonstrated how Oruka and Olaaka could be traced to a common root by examining the consonant change

With your small brain you think Iron and Ìrìn are cognates because they look alike when written down without demonstrating how these words preceeded from a common root

All of you Hebrew wannabe have problem with comprehension, you can't even understand the definitions you post. Read the definition in the screenshot you posted again and again until you understand it.

And I'm not interested in any back and forth, so do yourself a favour and don't expect me to read much of your obsessive posts..going back to reply a 4th time or so to the same post I made a year ago is obsessive

Below is the link to the qoute from the British governor that visited the Alaafin of Oyo.

https://books.google.com/books?newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&id=AE45AQAAMAAJ&dq=predecessors+pay+tribute

"This Kingdom of Benin was at one time so powerful that the Alafin of Oyo, the head of the Yoruba people, told me that even his predecessors had to pay tribute to its King." - United Empire, Volume 2 (1911), p. 620

Notice from the article that the Ooni haven not be elevated above the Alaafin yet at the time of the British governor's visit, as the Alaafin was referred to here as the head of the Yoruba people.

After operating with Benin for 400 years, 1400 -1800. The Yoruba hinterland became civilised enough for the Europeans to ventured into and the first European visit to Oyo was in 1824. They met the Alaafin of Oyo as the leader of the Yoruba people, not the Ooni. Ife was a small village and the Ooni was just a chief priest or babalawo.

The political elevation of the Ooni from chief priest to head of the Yoruba nation was to come later and started in the 1930s. Even up till the 1950s when Nigeria traditional and political leaders were invited to London conference to discuss the independence of Nigeria, the Ooni was still being referred to by the British press as the spiritual leader of the Yoruba people not the most senior king. It was Awolowo as leader of the western region that completed relegated the Alaafin to second place.

Another thing to notice from the direct qoute from the British governor that visited the Alaafin is that the Alaafin referred to the Oba of Benin as his friend not his brother. The latter political history that the Oba of Benin, the Alaafin of Oyo and Ooni of Ife are same brothers from Oduduwa is another lie this encounter disproved.

1. "In the evening we had a visit from the king (Alaafin of Oyo), to thank me for the presents I had given him, and again to assure me of being welcolme; said that he wanted nothing, unless it was something that would speedily cause the submission of the rebels. He said that he had sent to his friend the king of Benin for troops to assist him in the war."

Secondly about Hugh Clapperton's work : "He said that he had sent to his friend the king of Benin for troops to assist him in the war." this does not in any context mean Oyo paid tribute to Benin

Asibong Okon was referring to this:

Logically a word that is common to both igbo amd yoruba or entire southern Nigeria comes from Benin language, they are the only tribe who made contact with vertualy all most all d tribe in Southern Nigeria

You would find out tribes benin didnt have contact with in southern Nigeria dont have similar word for cat to areas benin had contact with
Lazy conclusion that is not based on anything.

Yoruba ia olorgbo
Edo is Ologbo
Ibo nwangbo

This is to show how benin in the ancient past influenced the entire southern Nigeria

Bini is the only tribe that had influenced between Yoruba and ibo, so if there is a similar world for a particular thing between igbo edo Yoruba, then the benin were the one who shared this word to the both tribe through her influence in ancient times

You can find the world in edo subgroup like Urhobo, okpe, esan

Does at it is worst sound as good English to you? Englishman grin ; Oga teacher learn:

How to use its

Its: is the possessive form of it, used to indicate possession, ownership, belonging, etc.

English generally uses apostrophes to indicate possession, for example, Macof’s bike (the bike belonging to Macof) and the dogs' barks (the barks of the dogs). But, confusingly, English does not use apostrophes when showing possession for personal pronouns: yours, ours, theirs, his, hers, and … its.

The reason English don't use apostrophe to show a possessive is long and complicated, but here are few fun facts:

Way back, the English used, his for the possessive form of it. (That wasn’t perplexing at all.)

The use of its for the possessive form of it takes off in the 1500s.Thereafter, English did commonly write it’s to show it possession for it, but that became nonstandard in the 1800s, probably due to the influence of pronouns like yours, hers, etc.

Example

The bank raised its rates.
Let’s try English's rule and swap in, it is. “The bank raised it is rates.” Now that doesn’t make sense . Its conveys that the rates belong to the bank.

Macof's Example:

Inferiority complex at its worst ### grin
Let us try to swap in it is: "Inferiority complex at it is worst". cheesy cheesy Your view conveys that, worst belong to inferiority complex.

Note :
Mr Olodo jatijati "its" is nonstandard since 1800s. Your dictionary obviously is also oudated. grin cheesy
But how can a human being be this dull for godsakehuh
It's not as if he doesn't know it, but he just can't wrap his small brain around it. Knowledge is different from understanding apparently. Imagine giving an explanation but still don't understand your own explanation. This is hilarious af grin

Here's what I think :
Mofo here saw my comment, he got desperate to use something to attack me, his emotions got triggered and he quickly settled to tackle my use of the word "its" without he himself being sure if it was wrong or not. But in his desperation he needs it be wrong so his brain just sees it as wrong at all costs. He even had to google the word and copied the explanation he found here which actually state my use of the word is accurate but still his brain sees my use of the word as wrong grin grin
This is how mental problems manifest o. When information doesn't pass properly through the brain

You have just embarrassed yourself for nothing

at it's worst grin grin. I will only explain one out of the two.

Identifying the meaning of it’s and its :

First things first, it,as a word is a third-person singular neuter pronoun, used (among other ways) to stand in for inanimate things or ideas.

Now, here’s the rawpoint on Its:
"Its" is a possessive form of the pronoun it, meaning belonging to it. Chikena grin

It's:
It’s is a contraction of the words it is or it has. (Interestingly, we don’t really contract it was into it’s.)
If you’re trying to figure out whether you should write it’s or its, swap in it is or it has. If the sentence makes sense with either of those substitutions, use it’s. If the resulting sentence doesn’t make sense, you need its.

How to use "it’s"
It’s is a contraction of the words it and is or it and has. A contraction is a shortened form of a word or group of words (we love to smush sounds together when we speak), with the omitted letters often replaced in written English by an apostrophe, as it’s does for the i in is and the ha- portion of has.

How to use "its"
"Its" is the possessive form of it, used to indicate possession, ownership, belonging, etc.

English generally uses apostrophes to indicate possession, for example, Mary’s bike (the bike belonging to Mary) and the lions’ roars (the roars of the lions). But, confusingly, English does not use apostrophes when showing possession for personal pronouns: yours, ours, theirs, his, hers, and … its.

The reason we don’t use an apostrophe to show a possessive is long and complicated, but here are few fun facts:

Way back when in English, his is used for the possessive form of it. (That wasn’t perplexing at all.)
The use of its for the possessive form of it takes off in the 1500s.
After, we did commonly write it’s to show it possession for it, but that became nonstandard in the 1800s, probably due to the influence of pronouns like yours, hers, etc.

So, your nonsensical English says it all about your personality. grin grin . Go study Mr.
huh My god this guy is such a dullard grin

So from your explanation here which is correct

"At its worst" or "at it is worst"
In which of both sentences is there a possessive?

grin you are a dullard you don't even understand your own explanation.
I'm not surprised, it takes a special kind of stupidity to be chasing Hebrew origin for yorubas

If you truly believe the king is one of you, you wouldn't have any problem with the claim by his son, the Oba of Lagos, that the Oba of Benin is his father.

Even you clever by half liar don't even believe your own lies. If you believe your lies of Oba of Benin being Yoruba, you wouldn't have issues with the claim by Oba of Lagos that his father is the Oba of Benin, but because you know that the Oba of Benin is not Yoruba, you have to look for an Isheri commoner as the first Oba of Lagos and try to deny the Benin ownership of Lagos monarchy.

If you sincerely believe that the Oba of Benin is a Yoruba man, then by extension the Oba of Lagos whose father is oba of Benin, will also be a Yoruba man through his father and I don't see any reason why you will have any problem with that but you have issues with oba of Benin being the father of Oba of Lagos because you know that the Oba of Benin is not Yoruba.

The Itsekiri themselves, all agree that their monarchy was started by Benin prince and sons of Benin nobility and the dynasty has not changed, so what's your point.

I don't see the argument, wherever the mother of the new Olu comes from doesn't change the fact that the Itsekiri throne remains Benin because the father will always be a descendant of Benin. In Nigeria, your ethnicity is based on your father's tribe. What many of you also forget is the young Olu elect has Benin influence and sympathy written all over is ascension. He is an inlaw to a prominent Benin son, captain Hosa, who he also worked for and Captain Hosa is closely connected to the Benin Palace. The current Oba of Benin, as the heir apparent and Edaiken of Uselu was the royal father of the day in the traditional wedding of this Olu elect and daughter of billionaire Captain Hosa.

Lastly, that is not to say his position will not be challenge in court because of the existing edict which hasn't be repealed or amended.

Whatever happens, Itsekiri throne will continue to remain Benin because it's from father to son and as long as the dynasty from Benin that started the monarchy hasn't changed.
And the same father's lineage goes back to Ife. The itsekiri know this, they knew this before being forced into old bendel state and they still know this today.

It is very wicked to try to play itsekiri people to be a minority when they are not a minority like Bini but part of one of the largest groups (Yoruba) in West Africa

Samuk, I have studied your write ups for a while now and I must admit you are one of the smartest Benin supporters in this forum. You pay attention and you study people a lot before you respond. That is an act of wisdom so keep it up.

You nailed my points. Benin city is just a fraction of the great Benin empire. It is only wise for Benin historians to know about the history of the Benin empire and all the clans within the empire and don't just focus on Edo alone.

The Yorubas best the benins in arguments not because their history is authentic but because they have studied their personal weaknesses, they have studied their opponents history and also they depend a lot onicer team work.

The benins history is so pure and genuine, but you need to have a deeper knowledge of the Benin empire as a whole and also study the Yoruba history as well because their history is flawed and very shallow. You can easily pick up errors from their history.

For example, Akka as you mentioned was the first son of pa Idu and the edo speaking tribe originated from akka and that is why till today the Urhobos call the Edo speaking people Akka. The Urhobos descended from Ihobo and they are all brothers. Other descendants of Pa Idu are efa and emehi, and their descendants are the esans, afemai etc. They all lived together as one family before they spread across the edo/delta region.

So can you see why it's good to study the pre-historic era of other clans such as the Urhobos etc because they will fill up the missing links of your history. It is true that the likes of the esans and Urhobos migrated to their present locations during internal wars or other disputes in Benin kingdom but you should realise that they migrated to those lands already inhabited by their ancestors that they were family with (efa, emehi, Ihobo)etc

The Yorubas are taking advantage of loopholes. For example, do you know that ubini was not derived from ile-ibinu as the yorubas usually say. Ubini has always been known as another name for igodomigo since the era of the ogisos. Ubini means "place of inexhaustible resources". Oranmiyan could not speak Edo language and that is why he mispronounced ile- ubini for ile-ibinu But the yorubas have hammered on that error and tried to use it to their advantage.
grin this guy is so hilarious. @tao11, at least this one has the brain to know that you are knocking the nonsense out of them. But bigotry will not allow him move forward

I have observed you for a while and to be honest I don't see you as a smart guy. Your rivals are attacking you left, right and centre and all you observed on this thread is to attack me. You are funny. Let me give you words of advise here, it's left for you to heed to my advise or not. It's better for you to go and study the foundational history of other kingdoms under the benin empire such as the urohbos, esans etc. This might shed more light on the missing links that the benins need to have a upper hand against their rivals. Your knowledge on benin history is too narrow and the yorubas are taking advantage of your narrow knowledge.

There is one thing you should understand, the yorubas are hell bent on destroying the benin Kingdom history, they don't mind telling all the lies in this world to accomplish that goal. They are playing dirty and they are quite determined to succeed.

I'm sure you have noticed that its not just the ile-ifes that are debunking the benin history. Everyone of the yoruba tribes are working together to obliterate the benin history out of the history books , but all I see on nairaland is the benins (edo speakers) trying to fight this media war all by themselves. My advise to you is to go and meet your afemai brothers, the esans etc... come together, broaden your knowledge, connect all the missing dots with facts and hit the yorubas hard.

The yorubas have studied benin history to a very large extent and their sole aim to debunk and discredit benin history so that when Nigeria finally divides they will claim the heritage of the benin Kingdom. So you better wise up and step up your game.

Go and do your research on the founding fathers of igodomigodo and you will come across pa idu. Don't attack me next time because I'm not the enemy. Wise up

God knows I wouldn't have responded to him if he had not said warri was NEVER under Benin and you know this is an outright lie. if at all it happened that way you know the strongest years of Benin was still around that 15th and 16th century. under ewuakpe in the 18th century, the empire and the economic fortunes began to dwindle. No body is trying to subdue any group. An itsekiri man is an equal anytime any day if he knows his worth. humanity cut it for me more than anything else. when it comes to marriage and trade with the Portuguese, the reality on ground does not support your argument, UROMI has some of the most European-like features than anywhere else in Nigeria
Egypt in all its grandeur is not known as a mighty empire.. Only the New Kingdom era is sometimes called the Egyptian empire, because this was the limited period Egypt was a mighty empire. And you think the term "empire" is just given anyhow because you conquered some few neighbouring villages and towns Lol

The problem is many of you don't know how to differentiate a mighty empire from a strong kingdom with little imperial significance

I do you a lot of service to be that honest. Nobody in the academic field prefers to refer to Benin as an "empire" over "kingdom". you know in history you can't be so absolute with these things, the fact that ginuwa met them on ground in the 15th century does not in any insinuate that they were not sent for, before ginuwa there was no kingdom in itsekiri, they did not evolve any kingdom before ginuwa as at the time ginuwa was sent of to establish a kingdom in the riverine area the Benin empire was already a mighty empire and they were already servant of the Benin king ferrying those men down to the palace. Hence the easy acceptance in the first place. Itsekiri did not do business with the Portuguese as an independent entity, they did as part of the Benin empire. everyone trying to claim his group was independent these days when we know there was only one overlord from the south for over 400 years. As the Portuguese did business with the itsekiris so they did with the Esans especially UROMI whose textile trade was already booming as at the Time of the Portuguese arrival, there was an empire and they all traded as kingdoms but under the BENIN EMPIRE. The itsekiris married the Portuguese, so did esan especially UROMI,then BENIN. Ughoton chiefs were sent as envoys to portugal. those features of marriage, trade relations with the Portuguese were not unique to the itsekiris. it was a common feature in the different part of the EMPIRE that ran as an independent country. OGIAME-it means the king of the riverine kingdom in the empire, that is what it was known as then, ogie today in Benin loosely means duke, king of a sub part of an entity. The fact that the itsekiri are fighting in ologbo today is because they have no where else to call home, they settled there precolonially but that does not the ownership of the town in anyway and they know, it is Edo and Edo all the way there is an enogie there and they are under his jurisdiction, it is an Edo town and they can't change it traditionally, itsekiris did not evolve town ownership, they did not even elvove a kingdom except the ones given to them by the Benins . when I said that warri was under Benin 'traditionally' I meant the stool,no group is under any group today under the Nigeria political space as every group is the ultimate decider of her own destiny and interest. The settings of today's world implies that you staying around the river bank does not cut it anymore , you need actual towns, that is why you see the similar fate among the ijaw and jekri groups, that is why you see the struggle and the fight for space is rife among these two groups, they are riverine folks and did not evolve town ownership. That is why you see them fighting any group that were benevolent enough and allowed them to settle across their river banks historically.
The question now is - sent for from where? I would even add why?
You can't just come and conjure your imagination and say because history doesn't deal with absolutes therefore you keep claiming the same thing that doesn't add up. At least make the narrative have substance so we can know what leads to follow

And I really don't mean this disrespectfully but Benin has never been a mighty empire... A strong and wealthy kingdom with some imperial significance yes but when we line up MIGHTY Empires, we shouldn't be throwing Benin in there so as not to make African history seem disjointed and disorderly.
For context it's like talking about European history and saying Prussia was a mighty empire...no!

I really can't argue against itsekiri ever being part of the Benin empire.. As I said if this was ever the case, it would have been early on around that 15th - 16th century .. Because much later the Portuguese and British clearly deal with Warri as an independent kingdom
For a while Warri was West Africa's Kongo in the sense of how much influence Portugal had on the kingdom, you can't compare that relationship with Esan or Bini. If Portuguese people were like you they would be claiming Itsekiri were under Portugal

The North keeps disgusting me day by day. So OPC is an extremist group because they defend Yoruba? Interesting
This one is looking for the gullible people who will leave themselves vulnerable to northern attackers

Young Man you should know history is not sentiment, warri was a part and parcel of the Benin empire. your king is being refered to as ogiame-literally translate to king of water, the riverine kingdom in the empire, the name ogie in Benin loosely refered to as Duke under the Benin king who is the Oba. warri was a part and parcel of the Benin kingdom. The itsekiris were not the only ones who got married to the Portuguese, even the Benins and the Esans did too under the supervision and the tutelage of the Benin king. The Benins were never riverine people, so the itsekiris who were always refered to as jekri traders or the middlemen always come in handy here. I for one would think they were even sent by the oba of Benin to help administer trade and bring these people the Portuguese in this case to the hinterland and the palace of the oba of benin. I believe that's how they got to their present location as they are now isolated from their yoruboid brothers. they were not always around I believe they were sent for. you coming to say this is not enough and does not change the fact of history. warri was always an integral part of the Benin empire and is still under Benin traditionally. If them leave una now una go say na Ife he come from God pass una e come carry the name ogiame put for body
Itsekiri are not isolated from other Yoruba groups. It's just Nigerian politics that put them in delta state.
Maintaining a relationship with Bini doesn't mean being under Bini. There was no such arrangement in the polity of both kingdoms running up to the colonisation of the area by the British. Its like saying Itsekiri were under the Portuguese because of the tight relationship they shared.

Although I will say, if at all Itsekiri were ever under Bini, this must have been in the early period after Ginuwa founded the Kingdom. You must realise that Ginuwa himself met the Itsekiri people on ground and they accepted him

If Itsekiri are under Bini, there wouldn't be the tussle over Ologbo and surrounding areas between Bini and Itsekiri

To the person above, I am no longer reading nor responding you. Basically you no longer exist to me.

I have proven you wrong. I don't need to waste more time arguing with a person who can't accept facts and logics. Time is valuable.

When I reach my time limit and delete my account, as usual the trolls will come and start making claims of how they "chased me" from nairaland, now to quote fela, that is your regular trade mark.
Prove me wrong by providing your own information on any European explorer and cartographer who ventured into the hinterlands: names, date of exploration, where explored etc
Lets compare the date and location and see how Europeans could possibly have made an accurate map before the 19th century

I have already said I will do no back and forth with any hopeless fellow using a faceless forum to boost his confidence. So when you are capable, if you are even mentally capable of proving me wrong, we can have an actual debate since you want to dive into history so bad despite your lack of background in the discipline.

1) contrary to you, who posted a mere snapshot without the full document nor a link to the website hosting the document, I actually posted the entire map and a link to the website hosting it. Every information about the map is in the website. I provide access for my foes and my friends alike.

2)actually I spend very little time on nairaland. I always limit my participation in nairaland. That is why each time I have passed the time limit which I fixed, I delete my account.
I only go on nairaland when I am boasted or too tired to do complex maths.

3)Also being a mathematician doesn't stop me from having other skills. It is not a draw back to be intelligent, it is an added value. Most people who major in history in the university do so because they failed science and maths in particular. They were too dumb to do science.
Being smarter is a plus, not a minus, and you should know given the number of times I schooled you.

Now stop quoting me. I have given you enough free education for today.
grin dullard calls himself smart and intelligent grin grin ironic
Fixed time for himself on Nairaland grin
Historians are dumb and it takes you to teach history grin

So full of himself in his uselessness

We await your own information on any European explorer and cartographer who ventured into the hinterlands: names, date of exploration, where explored etc, oh great one who knows more history than all the historians in the world combined grin

1) A map from 1658 which was clearly made by people with knowledge of the "interior".

https://www.raremaps.com/gallery/detail/70656/a-new-plaine-exact-mapp-of-africa-described-by-ni-vi-walton

2) what you are calling "common knowledge" is actually a mere opinion which is not held by all, and that opinion is disproved by the map which I provided.

3) what is with you and the constant swearing ? Are you mentally ill ? People ask you vadic questions and you just start insulting.
It is only your fault that you couldn't provide the entire source document if which you posted a snapshot of an extract. You have to realise that nothing prove 's that you didn't write that thing yourself.

4) you need to take your meds and stop discussing what you know nothing about.

My last notes to you child. Get some needed education.
It's left for you to take those names and dates in the screenshot or you provide your information on any European explorer or cartographer who ventured into the hinterlands to map out territorial boundaries
Anything other than that is a waste of time with a troll and lowlife practically posting the same thing, word for word for years on this forum. You are the one who needs meds and some education. Self-professed Mathematician/doctor in France who spends years on a forum changing moniker to argue what has no correlation with his self professed profession grin

The bone of contention of this guy macof is the fact that Ife wasn't recorded anywhere as great or as having any significance, therefore he trashed any eyewitness account of precolonial west Africa and promotes yorubacentric myths instead.

He is one of those peddlers of alternate history which favours their ethnocentric interests.

Hey macof the slow: Ife was a small village most likely under the alafin untill the British invaded and developed Ife as from 1912.

Abeokuta was established in 1830.

Many towns in which the Yoruba live in today were mere forrests 300 years ago. That is one of the reasons you wouldn't find some of them on maps which were made before the town's were created.

Look child, you have to start facing the reality that Ife was irrelevant. Oni is a priest not a a king, his king is the alafin if oyo.
Don't you have a life this boy?

Guy u don't know what u are saying, the Portuguese did left the coast and interacted with the itsekiri, in fact they even married itsekiri people.
so the itsekiri - a coastal people - had interactions with the Portuguese.. Oh wow what a surprise...
It's ridiculous that you would think a coastal people having contact with the Portuguese means the Portuguese were exploring and mapping out the hinterlands

Also the records of intermarriage between itsekiri and Portuguese were by itsekiri nobles, mostly princes who had gone to Portugal or other Portuguese colonies. Not by Portuguese settlers

Nairalandmonika:
you just posted a screenshot with no source and expect anyone to take u serious
im not expecting fools to take knowledge seriously. I'm not here to engage in one senseless back and forth

1) the Europeans did leave the coast and explore the region, they even have many books about their explorations and that is how they made their maps in general.

2) the map which I posted here is from the 16th century, but a fake historian like you can't tell the difference between 16th century and 18th century.

3) I clearly stated that the map is fictional and I gave the reasons

4) Benin doesn't actually appear on the map.

5) All this makes me wonder what the hell you are smoking, when you are high on some cheap drugs, try and avoid social media.
As usual the expression of a useless lowlife with a brain defect and no direction in life. Isn't your entire life's worth based on Nairaland from one moniker to another. When you get owned on this one you will delete it and open another one to keep posting the same trash all over again, how many times have I attempted to educate your silly self? But you are beyond being educated or informed. I have trashed this nonsense notion of European maps with you last year and the year before, given sources that state clearly that Europeans only began to fully explore the hinterland in the 19th century but basket brain here can't learn anything grin
Here's another article saying the same thing

I don't have time for your nonsense this year.. So take your trashy existential insignificance out of my mentions

Did I say muslims are not victims of Fulani attacks? However, It's naive to think there is not even a subtle religious angle to the conflict, but you can deny it all day long and keep gaslighting. You really think a band of violent marauding murderers just stop at being tribalists and don't have an ounce of hatred for other religious groups?

Also don't mistake me for a bigot, because I know that innocent people are always made scapegoat of these conflicts.
There's no significant religious angle to the conflict. Don't allow fulani to play the religion card
Fulanis kill non Fulanis who refuse fulani hegemony, whether Muslim or not

You will be shocked to know that those fulani marauders and their sponsors are not Islamic extremists but ethnic bigots. Fulani are after economic and political advantage over others, they don't have lands, they want what you have.
The problem is that some non-fulani support them or refuse to stand in their way all in the name of common religion... This is probably what gives the illusion of "religious angle"
