Return to the history books and you got the above and read again. Get wisdom and know why exactly the defeats came into play. And read the predictions there if they weren't fulfilled or not. I am not forcing you to use your head well, but at least, use just 0.1% of your brain naooo. You are carrying wooden decorations carved out by your own fellow man, you call them gods, and you are bold to defend your action. Lol. This is the highest level of stupidity.

A beg, feel free to continue worshipping them. In 2021, people can still exist worshipping woods made by their fellow men. Mehn! Some people cannot be saved. 2021!!! shocked

God, I beseech you, let me not be stu.pid to the extent of worshipping a wooden, metallic, plastic etc images made by another man. I will always use my brain. May I not be foo.lish and lose my sense of reasoning to the extent of even arguing to defend such stup.idity. And I pray for every st.upid human under this bondage to be delivered. Lord, I dont understand how some people who claim to be literate in 2021 will carry wooden lifeless images and call them their gods. Hmmmm! Some people are indeed st.upid.

May you see light and be free soon.

Stupidity is really your watchword.

There is nothing else to say. Your earlier comment made it clear that people only get conquered when their deities are weak.
You cannot justify the utter uselessness of your foreign Hebrew god to the Hebrews whose entire history is that of being conquered. Why would you foolishly compare Yoruba or Igbo God to Hebrew God if it is about who got conquered least? answer this

Even the Nazis beat the living shit out of them and you come here trying to bash people who don't worship your weak godhuh

I'm using your own logic here so run that down real quick and answer the question if you still have anything to say

Stupidity is when one can't tell that sacred images are not worshipped as the Gods but rather held as sacred objects.
You are in such loss of touch with reality because its not just ignorance here it's something worse to not know that humans like to have physical representations and use symbolisms. So dummie, those wooden images are not worshipped by anyone

Look at the bolded phrase. Bro, change your history before it is too late. Your fore fathers are weak. If they are strong, your land and other parts of Nigeria will not be like this. If their gods are strong, no one can deceive them. They failed, and that failure is what you want to follow. The degree of their stupidity was terrible, yours will be extremely disastrous. These man made gods are fake and powerless. And those wooden images are what you want to start worshipping. Lol. In 2021.

I repeat, these are powerless gods. From Ibo to Yoruba to Hausa to Fulani to Efik to Ijaw to Calabar to wherever...all these are caricatures. I call them "man made gods".

There is ONLY one GOD. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I can bet my life on Him. If you bring these wooden decorations close to me, it is in your eyes I will pour gas on them and burn them Right in your eyes, they will turn to ashes. And that's the end.

We always sing a song:

Goodluck to you!
Let me give you a run down on how much of Hebrew history is rife with them being subjugated by others

1. 18th dynasty Kemet, particularly under Thutmose III
Kemet (ancient Egypt) swept across Canaan like hot knife through butter, conquering many Canaanite tribes including the would be Israelites
2. Assyrian conquest of the (northern) kingdom of Israel
3. Babylonian captivity of the people of Judah
4. Persian rule over all the aforementioned people including the Hebrews
5. Roman colonisation that lasted into the middle ages brouhaha with the area being a major site for European crusaders and muslims to take their turns ruling
6. Ottoman rule of Israel until 1917
7. Nazi massacre and genocide of Jews

So look here, Hebrews have been thoroughly beaten people in history with no achievement outside theology and their religion serving as part of the catalyst of certain present religions

So if the god of Israel was powerful and not weak and a failure I wonder why his people have always been beaten and conquered by others

At least the igbo and Yoruba etc were only colonised once and only recently( till the 1960s)

Before you can call African Gods failure, that tag should go to your foreign Hebrew god

Agwu is a trickster alusi, The trickster is capable of being either sex at anytime, or neither sex.

Respected and feared, Agwu is capable of sowing confusion in the mind of even the clearest reasoner. Agwu, however, can also clarify confusion, even when it is caused by human stupidity, the finite capacity of the human mind, or the evil actions of other persons or gods.

If it pleases Agwu to protect or “work with” a thinker, unparalleled lucidity may be attained. But if it pleases the god to sow confusion in someone’s mind, there is nothing anyone can do about it—except work with Agwu to lift the curse or

devise a technique of information gathering that overcomes the external confusion wrought by Agwu. Agwu is most dreaded by Dibia whose success as diviners depends on clarity of mind.

Dibia are therefore taught ritual sacrifices that they must make to Agwu at the beginning of every divination session.

AjaanaOka:
It is quite plausible that the proto-Igbo word for 'mother' had a '-na' ending. This is based on the the few Igboid lects that still use such forms today.

In Ekpeye, mother is ina. In the Ndele dialect of Ikwere it is nna. In Ogba, it is ona/nna. The rest of the Igboid speech forms (that I am aware of) use words that have a '-ne' ending.

My theory is that proto-Igboid word for mother had a terminal 'na', but that the 'a' shifted to 'e' to avoid confusion with the word for father.

It is not mere coincidence that all the Igbo lects that use a -na word for mother have a '-da' or '-di' word for father. In Ekpeye, father is 'ida'; in Ndele, it is 'ada' or 'nda'; in Ogba it is 'didi' (although nna is also used; perhaps reborrowed recently from the hinterland Igbo).

In much of the rest of Igboid, the word for father had evolved to 'nna'; and perhaps to avoid confusion with mother, a concomitant shifting from '-na' to '-ne' occurred with respect to 'mother'.
Very interesting indeed. This just gives more confirmation to my suspicion that -na [nya] words are for Mother and -da for Father
Some languages have lost the '- da' but they all retained the mother sufficiently
So unfair grin

Father is also "Nda" in Nupe and "Ada" in Ebira and Idoma

And I don't know if you noticed but all the igbo speaking areas using '- na' and '-da' forms for mother and father are southern igbo, which further buttresses your initial point.

Perhaps there wasn't a shift in the sense of bringing in a new form of the word but just how the two forms became to be used.. perhaps, '- ne' had existed for the longest time already.
You find "Iye" which I believe is connected in Edoid and Yoruboid languages and dialects
So this '- na' and '-ne' switching could be something that existed with the proto-YEAI speakers

1. Such stories are present in few western Igbo communities including the igbanke people in modern Edo state.

The current Obi of Onitsha proclaimed recently that the aboriginals of Ife were a stock of Igbos saperate from their South east kin, which may finally put to rest the question of Igbos that claim they came from bini but don't know how they got there. https://newsexpressngr.com/news/38932-Igbos-were-the-first-to-settle-in-Ile-Ife-Obi-of-Onitsha

The current ooni of Ife corroborated it recently with stories of Igbo settlements that Oduduwa superimposed his dynasty on, thereby assimilating a vast majority while some groups simply scattered on various directions. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2019/08/ooni-of-ife-and-the-igbo-yoruba-relationship/amp/

The problem with Yoruba history is the sheer amount of folk tales and fabricated bullshlt packaged inside First by Ajayi crowther who first used the name "Yoruba" and later Awolowo to unite all the warring groups that today call themself Yoruba
"Ugbo" are not more aboriginal than the other Isoro groups in Ife. Neither was the conflict between Aborigines and Foreigners... It was a civil war. Its funny how you are defensive over a story that isn't even told by igbo ancestors but by yoruba ancestors

Already you have defeated your argument by "they didn't know how they got there". Meaning there's no such thing in their traditions and all these are just recent attempts to fill in a void and unknown period of existence with elements from yoruba stories. So again, you can't know anything of what you are saying.. You still have to depend on yoruba history for what you claim is grand igbo history even as far as saying Proto-igbo of 8000 BC were the ones referred to, adding timeline inconsistencies. We should be getting all the narratives from igbos, but we get only reworked versions of the Yoruba narratives, where igbos have now been inserted

Fabricated bullshitt didn't stop you from reading and talking about it in the absence of any history from your side. Because its not as if you have the "non-fabricated bullshitt" that is independent of the fabricated one.
Worry more about igbo history, that's what the thread is about, instead of worrying about what the problem with yoruba history is, which tells more about your lack of understanding and limited knowledge on the subject matter than a problem with the traditional stories themselves. It's ok to be confused when you have little understanding of something but don't project that on everything, that should be on you alone.

Anyway, let's not digress. The thread should remain focused on Proto-igbo... In this case, it makes no sense to even dwell on Ife-Ugbo conflict

The Igbo word for flood that I know of is iji. There could be other words for it from other dialect areas, but the Igbo of the Anambra River area and the Niger Valley call it iji.

I'm inclined to think that the 'Ku' words are a Yoruboid innovation that spread. Olokun was worshipped in Ika as Olokun and it reached them from nearby Benin settlements like Urhonigbe. Onoku is simply the Ukwuani adaptation of the same word.
I see. Makes sense

What do you think about "Nna" meaning mother instead of father in Proto-igbo? This would make it easier to connect the word to other Volta-Niger words for mother

1. The Igbos/Ugbo of ilaje is just a tiny piece in a much grander puzzle of countless small settlements and polities that were aboriginal to the Ile-ife area before the arrival of Oduduwa and his followers, the current Ooni of Ife even called attention to this fact recently.

2. Call it ugbo or igbo, the fact is they were a very ancient group of fragmented settlements and small villages encompassing but not limited to the Ife area overseen by a highly revered priest/ruler called Obatala, the ilajes are just a tiny part of this Ife-igbos and no their history doesn't start around the 12th-14th centuries, that's just as far as any historian recalls

P:S- This does not in any way mean the Igbos of modern southeastern Nigeria originated from the Ife area
1. You wouldn't know this. It's not like there's any additional to the story that is coming from Igbo speaking towns.. The entire story from start to finish exists only in Yorùbá speaking areas but somehow the grand story is about Igbos and only the tiny piece is about yorubas undecided

2. "Igbo" is standard Yoruba dialect, "Ugbo" is central and south Eastern Yoruba dialects... Which both Ife and Ilaje fall into, so yes Ugbo is actually what they called themselves then, as they still do now
As far as historians can 'recall' is also all you have. So what is the issue exactly?

You know, I thought the -okun there would have something to do with the sea, but Blier ascribed a different interpretation to it.

Help me clarify something: was Igbomokun in ancient Ife, or was it somewhere towards the sea in the Ilaje area (as some people have said)?

Also, can you give some examples of -ku- words from other Volta-Niger languages that signify the sea? I would think that since the homeland of the Volta-Niger languages was far from the sea they wouldn't have a common word for sea.
Oh I was actually referring to "omoku" the other guy spoke about.

About Ugbomokun, I personally believe it is an oriki that has to do with "strength" not a place name exactly. I'm not very familiar with the traditions at Ilaje but from what I've read and heard from both the Olugbo and others there's very little differences. One of the few seeming differences is that Ugbo claim all of Ife was called Ugbomokun but Ife say only a part of Ife was called Ugbo (that is Iwinrin). Both might be right especially if I'm accurate that Ugbomokun is an oriki. Because as far as Ugbo were concerned they had already pulled out of Ife and created their own system under Obamakin, so in their perspective, their Ife was now Ugbomokun

Just a theory to reconcile the narratives

-------
You find "Eku" in Nupe, "Okun" in Yoruba and there was the "Onoku" example from earlier.. This is what my earlier statement was based on, only alternative explanation I see is that it is a yoruboid factor that spread

You are right on us not expecting a common word for sea because of the homeland not being around the sea but they still would likely have had floods that they might associate with the sea
What is the igbo word for flood?

-(Vowel)ku- is very well present in other Volta-Niger (or West Benue-congo as you like to call it) languages

IFA is indeed the true religion of the Yoruba people, a great art,a great science. It was developed by a great Yoruba philosopher, Orunmila, it present a way of knowing the mind of olodumare through divination, IFA has 256 principal odus, although there are sixteen odus, but each odus has another alternative which makes it 256.

But the bad side of IFA is that some of it Philosophy goes against ethics and humanity, human sacrifice, tendency to get in contact with wrong demons,so I say it loud IFA is to be associated as a great art or science but not as a religion, hear me I grew up in the midst of elders and I know what they do in secret, they never have peace of mind, the truth is that only in Jesus is there peace and hope for the afterlife, Jesus said " love your neighbour as you love yourself, he said to the adulterer" go and seen no more", what religion could be greater than this, what I wrote is the truth,is you disapprove ask your heart
Ifá practice does not include human sacrifice. There's no tangible evidence or example of this

And there are no demons in Yorùbá beliefs. The closest thing to that are Ajogún spirits like death, sickness, poverty
Which can even be explained away as abstract personifications. And the point of Ifa is to protect against these ajogún.. So what nonsense are you saying exactly?

I posted this story I found from a science page. I don't know why it was titled this way, ghost could mean unknown origin. The truth is that even the Bible stated in Genesis 6 that some sons of God came and inter married with daughters of men and gave birth to giants and exceptionally advanced children which I presume continued today. The story is worth reading and let's have fruitful discussion as all these Ogiso , Eri and Oduduwa coming from the sky may be true, may be it was actually space ship or they were spiritual people . If history were to be believed then there could have been some descents from other planets whether angels or other being but stating that they were limited to any particular race may be deliberate as I believe that could have cut across all races which may include many so called geniuses as part of their descendants and I have thought privately that Orunmila, who invented the binary model called Ifa may have been a genius or a spiritual person but the factual Yoruba history are largely hidden in the algorithm of such spiritual corpus.

I just want knowledgeable people to make some meaningful contributions please
I think the pattern of the Yoruba, Igbo and Edoid groups talking of an ancestor coming from the sky has the same cultural origin.
It started as one single character but as these cultures split and spread apart their different experiences moulded that original story into different forms

This is similar to the European and Aryan story/belief of the sacred cow which is told in different forms among Indo-European speakers but today mostly associated with the Hindus

You need help and just so you remember, between you and I, you are the one who has commented with deathwish on me, you and your partner olu317 are the ones who have tried to locate me outside nairaland, once thinking I am a certain Mr. Makinde. So with this and your recognisable mental issues, your slander is not surprising and i hope nobody takes this nonsense seriously

These allegations are huge and I felt it important to say something but I will not respond to this nonsense again.

The death wish now hidden from this thread is attached below https://www.nairaland.com/4475313/yoruba-hebrew-heritage/74
It is this same thread that i engaged these guys seriously on their ridiculous claims that they are yet to defend causing all this immaturity and slander

Tao11 the pathological liar grin....you have ressurected me by mentioning Igbos again in your unending stream of lies which I will thrash one after the other cheesy

( 1) Igbos remain the oldest Distinct group of people in modern day Nigeria with a history dating back to 6,000 years ago
The remains in Iwo eleru(which are not really human remains as you claimed) dates back to 43,000 years while yorubas only started settling the area around 12th century, how could this be the ancestors of Yoruba people? grin

Igbo people that spoke a language very closely related to modern igbo resided in Ile ife before yoruba started coming into the area from modern day Kogi state.

(2) Obatala who is the first Oba in Ile ife(Igbo omoku) is an Igbo priest, so clearly Igbos ruled yoruba in Igbo omoku (ask me for evidence) cheesy

Agreed the moremi episode has Little to do with modern day south Eastern Igbos but with a distinct Igbo group that inhabited ife(Igbo omoku) prior to yoruba arrival(s).

The moremi stories are absent in the history of South eastern Igbos today simply because it has nothing to do with them, the Igbos mentioned in the moremi story are now in ondo state as the ugbo people and they preserve alot of their Igbo traits till this day.

To anybody doubting the Igbo roots of ugbo people note that the most successful ruler of ugbo/igbo people while they where in ile Ife(Igbo omoku) is named "Ekenwa" grin....how Igbo does that get? grin grin

I don't understand if you are just born foolish or you grew into it?

Ugbo (Ilaje) is Igbo? Is this how desperate for igbo history you are? It is nobody's fault that you lot have just about no records of events of your past. Always seeking to attach yourself to other people who have history

This sounds like igbo to you?
