n3xt: Like I said earlier, “In Nigeria, there’s always a problem for every solution” and the bolded part above is a typical example.
If people know a well painted car is better than one without good painting, why do we assume they don’t know how to treat their steel works. Even if they do not, why are those who are knowledgeable in that space not teaching them what to do to make their gates/doors etc last longer.
Any pipe in the market can be used for your project. Treating pipes is not rocket science. You just need to understand how to maintain it.
- use gasket rubber/rubber feet to protect your pipe from scratches - seal up openings - coat it very well - avoid scratches and repaint immediately you notice one. - sand off oily surface on black pipes as it prevents paint from adhering. - always clean your gates/pipes etc.
Armed with the information that most homeowners/clients don’t know the difference, welders always go for the cheapest materials in order to maximize their gain. Rust inhibitors doesn’t cost much but only few welders apply it on their job.
Treating pipes is very easy if we chose to do things right.
_________ Pic 1 - Rubber feet for chair leg (sold less than 50 - 100 naira). It’s not for fashion but to prevent scratches that causes rust.
__________ Michilins how does “your statement” solve or provide a solution for the people in here. I’m sure you’ll agree that do not need to know it ALL, we need to teach them what they need to know. Someone just show us how to estimate number of paint drums required per room. He has solved a problem. It’s different from someone asking “How many people know how to calculate number of paint required to paint a room?”
all these stress and extra resources when you can simply use angle bars instead of pipes?
I thought the purpose of this thread is to save and cut cost of building houses. Why create extra problems and find a solution just to prove that you are a professional builder.

We started work today by welding the base plates, clits and other attachments. But when you allow professionals who live for their job to handle your projects, the pace will be mind-blowing.
The other photo is the job our own Valencia2012 ordered for. Was able to frame it and by tomorrow, the pan will start going in.
The work we started today and where we ended it today. Check out the base of the station and see how it was welded and the attached clots to ensure quality.
Third photo is the gate Oga Valencia2012 ordered for. Work started on it today as well too. Kindly see the use of 4mm angle iron for the framing at the side going to the pillar and the other one touching the floor. Those areas are most vulnerable to rusting.
I don't know it all so I will be very happy if you have suggestions on how to do better than this. You start dying the day you stop learning
n3xt: I agree pipes do react to weather element when it’s not well treated.
Below is an 8 year old gate. Still solid like new without any visible sign of defect.
________ If anyone know TCC Ogere on Lagos/Ibadan expressway, the gate on that property is more than 2 decades old without any visible sign of defect.
Pic 2 - TCC Ogere Gate (over 1000kg)
yes maybe the time frame I gave is short and this gate has surpassed it. That doesn't disqualify my statement. Btw, how many people know treated and non treated pipes. Like in this thread of professionals, how many people can differentiate between the two
EgunMogaji2: Your 2 cents are really not needed here but I guess it makes for general thread conversations. You’re really not teaching “me” anything with these pointers.
I used USA measurement. You can’t find 3 X 1 in Nigeria so naturally you’ll slide up to the next size it’s logical.
What I used are exactly what I wanted to use as designed. There’s a specific look that I’m going for. Mine is more than just having a gate with slats.
You’re free to design and use what you want on your own project. Thanks.
well I didn't know you were using US ui terms in Nigeria. Sorry for the misunderstanding. And like you said, it's for general thread discussion and not because of you who already know it all and worked with your versatile knowledge and experience. Enjoy your morning
n3xt: Who propounded this theorem? How long will it take before such gates start failing?
Will the same happen to gates painted with weather resistant paints or metallic paints?
give or take five years and the pipes will start developing issues. My experience with working with pipes is how I got to know this. If you like, carry 5mm pipe put,it will not last as long as 5mm angle iron. That's why if I use pipe anywhere on gate, I open the tail end of the pipe to constantly drain it if water. If not, the owner of the gate will call you after a few years to come and fix one or two things
EgunMogaji2: There are many ways of making these cheaper but I insisted on
3 X 1 Thick for the frames. 3 X 1 Thin for the slats. You can use smaller size for these but I wanted that major look.
This was done as a special favor for me.
There are other designs too on Pinterest.
it's called 3" by 1½". Next time, use angle bar for the frames. Pipes are prone to rusting quickly no matter the guage. Let me guess, the pipe used is 1.5mm thick. Same pipe used in making doors but remember this gate will be under the weather both rain and sun. The expansion of the steel in the day and contraction in the night due to change in weather will definitely affect it's durability.
Best to use at least 4mm angle bar for the framing especially the part that goes to the pillar because it carries the weight of the whole gate then use 1.5mm 2 by 1 for the slats to ensure durability.
neduboo: Please how many rods will be enough for this project. I met a welder and he gave me the following list of no of rods for this 4 Bedroom bungalow. But the list looks much.
His list include :
2 tonne of 16mm 2 tonne of 12mm 1 tonn of 10mm
please sir what business does a welder have to do with this type of thing
valencia2012: I just did my concrete parapet over a month ago courtesy of great tutorials from KolaShangOne, saydfact, seglad2 and Dennis3D. Same goes for muffutau55, Perfecttouchade, Maintain12, skimanski, twinskenny, Nobody, omanzo02 as I approached lintel and decking stage in 2019. Notwithstanding, none of these gentlemen got a job or token appreciation from me! Even diordaves called out money121 twice to respond to my enquiries on parapet facia, for reasons known only to him, he didn't. Let's bury this here and now. Money121 is not a fan of writing or theories. He is a practical, operational and blunt person. Based on facts on this thread, he has never cheated. It is his prerogative to respond or not, but in the end, not only does what he knows best, but also gets it exceptionally done. Now, that we know, lets stop the name callings, please. Give him jobs because he is good at roofing or because he is poor at responses and enlightenments. It's your choice. We are all thieves. He who is without a sin, cast the first stone! A little over a month ago after 8 years on nairaland, my job is handled by michlins whom I met here under a week, had a little altercation with, WITHOUT any recommendation or referral or enlightenment, a total stranger. But has taken so much pains to tutor me on almost every iron, steel and metal we come across. Now, you can see why I love Mercedes while you might prefer Honda?
thanks for the opportunity. Work starts on your gate tomorrow, going to umunze right now to supervise a standing tank I'm doing for another Nairalander
EgunMogaji2: This is exactly what I want/need actually. Minimalist.
Most of my neighbors don’t even have fence, talk less gate
Stopper is the least of their worries.
like I said, it's not to stop thieves but to give them a hard time. My former compound had two dogs but the day theives came to steal my motorcycle, none of the dogs barked neither did anyone in the compound hear a drop of pin
this is a beautiful work but for future reference and safety, ensure you use 1½" flat bar to run across the place where the two gates meet. This will ensure that an intruder doesn't have access to run his tools across the keys.
That small gap you see will be enough for a saw blade to pass and that leaves the key vulnerable to attack. We do these things not to stop thieves but at least to suffer them before they get access to our property
Good morning everyone. Kindly join me on my thread as I try to replicate this gate for our own oga Valencia2012. Egunmogaji2 had it for sale and he loved it. Attached pictures are as follows.
The sample
The materials I got same yesterday after he made deposit.
spyder880: This is a thorny issue, made more complicated because of personal choices. So many people use buildings to announce their "arrival" financially. In the Eastern part of Nigeria, and many South South states like Rivers, Delta, Cross rivers and Akwa Ibom, people tend to build bigger houses to provide for their family convenience, and for those still in the child bearing age, we tend to make provisions for the children to live comfortably before they leave home. Many people also build for extended family members, friends and in laws to occupy some parts of their building. But is this supposed to be so?
I have listened to both sides of the argument, debated with friends and family. My advice is for people to do what they consider modest, considering their finances. Its unwise to start a size of house you might sweat for many years to complete. This leads to unrealistic expectations, like wanting to get materials or services cheaper than the real market value.
So, Is your big house in the village where you return to only once or twice in a year an economic waste? Yes and no. Yes because it doesn't yield any rents, doesn't attract anything apart from maintenance costs as you repaint and renovate over the years. No because you gain prestige, recognition and respect from friends and family, plus the development that it will attract in the town/neighborhoods that will add value to the lands around there. It also grows the local economy and keeps the locals employed and productive.
I always advise people to first build commercial properties, a place they can collect rent, or reap capital gains by market appreciation. Then build in the villages, because we must return to the village someday, and many people dont like the idea of squeezing themselves into a room with their whole families in periods of festivities, just because they are saving money. Build only what you are comfortable to build, your personal home shouldn't be an avenue for you to stress yourself or commit crimes to impress those who will never be impressed.
But for those that can afford a big house, those who might have built a lot of businesses, a few rental apartments, trained their children and others in schools or skills, achieved other philanthropic performances, please go ahead and build your large house for posterity. The contentment it will give you is also an achievement, It was Abraham Maslow who taught us of "self esteem" needs which comes at the apex of the hierarchy of wants, a massive, beautiful edifice is a crown. Some towns are known because of some people, the edifices people erect in some towns have given a psychological boost to most people from such towns to increase their hustle, but please hustle legitimately, dont commit crime to impress anyone with your buildings.
Happy weekend everyone.
at adazi ani, one person built about seven storey building. Whenever I pass their, I ask myself why waste this insane amount of money there but then again,it has become an iconic structure and has set the junction apart for decades to come. If you have the resources, build massively. The Eifel tower is still a reminder
5mm 3" angle iron for the framing. I decided to replace the pipes used for framing the sample he gave me because unlike angle irons, pipes are prone to rusting. There are less quality angle irons like 3mm but I choose 5mm because of the amount of quality and standard I want to set for the job.
3" square pipe for the pillar to make the gate sturdier.
Meanwhile, I have agreed terms with another Nairalander to replicate this gate and I should be starting work by Monday. One good turn deserves another and that's what happened between us. We had a great business experience and he called on me to do another job for him. I will be updating the thread on the making processes
n3xt: Its now N3,050 per bag at my end. Information from a reliable source said this might extend till February 2021.
It’s already taking a hit on us here as our block makers now manage to get 400 bags per week.
________ In other other news, I’d be joining the official launch of Supafix cement (cementitious tile adhesive) in the coming week. More updates on this later.
