Ikeja – The Lagos State Government on Monday said it had procured no fewer than 100 vehicles for the use of traditional rulers and chiefs across the state. Mr Ademorin Kuye, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, made the disclosure at the 2015 Ministerial Press Briefing in Ikeja. He said the vehicles, which had since been presented to the traditional rulers, were to ease the movement of the beneficiaries in the discharge of their duties. Kuye said the government was committed to the welfare of Obas in the state, and would continue to take steps to demonstrate it. “With these vehicles and more that we have provided for our Obas and Chiefs, we can boldly say our traditional rulers are the most taken of in the whole of the country. “We see traditional rulers as partners in progress and we will continue to do our best to make them comfortable,’’ he said. Kuye said government was building new palaces and renovating old ones to enhance the comfort of traditional rulers. He said that the palaces of the Alara of Ilara, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu and Suenu had just been furnished for the comfort of the respective traditional rulers. Giving other statistics, Kuye said the government processed no fewer than 44 applications for the recognition and upgrade of chieftaincy stools in the last one year. The commissioner said the state’s Chieftaincy Standing Tribunal of Enquiry had commenced inquiry into applications for upgrade to Obaship from various divisions. He said the government gave approval and recognition to seven new chiefs and Baales in Epe/Ibeju division of the state within the period under review. Kuye gave the new chiefs as Prince Adewale (Iwajoba of Akodo), Rafiu Bello (Baale of Okun-Ise), Raufu Mustapha (Baale of Okun-Tiye) and Raufu Alaka (Olisa of Orimedu). He said the others were Lamoriu Adekoya (Apebi of Orimedu), Babatunde Lamidi (Aro of Orimedu) and Kabiru Ganni (Losi of Orimedu). The Commissioner said Gov. Babatunde Fashola had presented staff of office to Prince Mufutau Ogunnukan of the Muja Ruling House as the Adegbajo of Odo-Igbajowo in Eredo Local Council Development Area. “Chief Adisa Awoyemi, Oroja of the Fafunmi Ruling House, had also been presented staff of office as Oba of Meiran in Agbado –Oke-Odo area of the state, ” he said. According to Kuye, no fewer than 27 chieftaincy matters have been referred to the Standing Tribunal of Enquiry for adjudication. On boundary issues, Kuye said the government successfully resolved the boundary and land conflicts involving the Onilogbo of Ilogbo-Eremi, Phillip family and Bambgose Idolabumo Ruling House of Ilogbo-Eremi in Badary area. He said the government had also received the report of the committee set up to look into the remote and immediate causes of the civil disturbances between two in Ijede Local Council Development Area. “The findings and recommendations had been analysed. The Ministry had communicated directives to all the MDAs mentioned in the recommendation such that amicable solution could be fast tracked as this will engender harmonious existence between the two communities” he said. 'Carnal knowledge'. Not 'canal' - which is a waterway. |
iyatrustee:They are not 'world leaders' if they are sent representing someone else. A 'world leader' would entail a head of state. Most likely these are people already resident in Nigeria as Ambassadors and Charge D'Affaires, their raison d'etre is to befriend Nigerian government representatives so as to push their agenda. Stop being so naive. |
iyatrustee:'Delegations' are not the world's leaders. They are people who represent a nation who wish to gain something, often at the expense of Nigeria and Nigerians. Don't be so quick to be excited, they haven't done anything to benefit you so far. |
I wish I cared. Let South Africa deal with its own issues. You have enough of your own. Stop looking for the external approval and acceptance from others and build your own nation. |
ozoigbondu:None of them serve a purpose. There should be no monarchs in a fledgling democracy. |
princeofpeace22:There have always been good and honest people in Nigeria. Some have chosen to pretend as though those people do not exist so as to justify their own immoral behavior. |
missystephen:You raise a good point and there are many such women but the problem is that whenever someone suggests that birth control or family planning be brought in some (or a lot of) people claim to be 'offended' by the idea that someone else should inform them on their reproductive habits. |
OYINBOGOJU:It sounds like the woman was hiding the letters for 20 years. That is evil. It's rare that men don't want contact with their children, contrary to what some might claim. The truth is that they want nothing to do with the woman. I hope the father hasn't passed on. |
PassingShot:China, Korea and Indonesia still have problems with corruption. Whenever there is a change of leadership in China that is when increasing numbers of Chinese officials are dealt with but it depends upon which faction they belong to. |
I wonder why so many people insist on risking their lives crossing the roads instead of using the pedestrian bridges. That punishment is odd though. They should fine people who don't use the pedestrian bridge. |
manny4life:Biology is not a 'belief'. There are biological issues that would stop some people from procreating - nothing to do with the imaginary spirit world. The human body is a complex machine, any number of physical (and mental) issues could stop procreation from taking place. |
Twaci:A child is a responsibility borne of physical interaction between a man and a woman. There is no 'god' involved in that process. I have no respect for the parents in this position but there are people all over the world who have done likewise and worse. |
I always find it odd how people in the tropics think that it is a sign of prosperity to dress in a similar fashion to those in northern Europe. What reason is there to wear a blazer in 30 degrees celcius? |
bushdoc9919:Developing a robust economy should always be a priority but I was not thinking of expensive welfare programs - more so using the existing networks to spread information that will assist in social development. Basic lessons and information on health and hygiene would go a long way in parts of Nigeria - the need to keep an environment clean, proper refuse collection practices, how to deal with waste water etc. The money for such a project could easily be found, no need for a hefty treasury. The other fact is that many of these social policies are cost saving - advising people to have fewer children is one such example. |
sweetguy26:Most of Nigeria's problems started in the military era. Had you listed the Obasanjo regime of 1976-1979 then you would have been right. |
bushdoc9919:China has a lot of people but a much slower birth rate (as a result of their state enforced policies), allowing their development to be felt by the people. India has a lot of people but an unsustainable birth rate - any development that is taking place there will not be felt by the majority because no economy can grow to match such a birth rate. A good economy needs equivalent social policies to be effective. |
Defcon1:There's a lot of well-presented food that tastes dreadful, to insist on that point is odd. To many people outside of Africa some of the soups that Nigerians eat are not appealing to look at but they taste delicious. Presentation is a factor in a restaurant and will have some relevance for children who can be shallow when it comes to food but taste and nutrition far trumps aesthetics. |
Defcon1:Food is about nutrition, not aesthetics. Taste is definitely important as well. What a peculiar mind you have. P.S. These pictures were taken expressly for the purposes of the newspaper - the school food that the kids eat is presented very differently, most schools do not use prison trays for school meals. |
xdos:What are 'continental' dishes when you are in Africa? Are you talking about palava sauce? Tef with roasted lamb and sauce? Cous cous with roasted vegetables? Peanut stew? I'm curious. |
It's clear that there are a lot of people having children who should not be. If you cannot take care of yourself you have no business having a child. |
dokyOloye:I take your point that those in the region from which the wealth is created should benefit but that does not excuse public officials using the commonwealth for their own personal benefit, to a greater degree than other citizens. In a just world all of the assets that you listed would be sold or used for the public benefit. |
Tosinayoko:Show me those people that worship him outside of the south-west. Thanks. |
Chiaka:Nigeria would have been polio free many years ago were it not the common factor in most of Nigeria's problems. |
JustCalMeDBoss:Only very foolish people believed that Tinubu has ever been an agent of change. Buhari's reputation is equally undeserved. The Nigerians who voted APC are in for a shock. |
Old news, Nigerian reporters have been saying this for years. Daily Beast are hardly a major publication - I wonder why none of the more popular websites reported this before the election? |
bynat:Arab contractors do lousy work. |
I agree with this list but I would like to add that the society places a very different burden on men than women which is why they are less likely to seek help and less likely to trust doctors. There is far more attention placed on female welfare than men's, by society - more drives for breast cancer than testicular cancer, for example; greater outrage when girls are kidnapped in the north east than when boys are slaughter or conscripted. Another point is that men tend to work more dangerous jobs and are thus several times more likely to die at work than women. Socially it is more acceptable for a woman to act out or to talk excessively as a result of problems than it is for men. This leads to a bottling effect that causes greater stress. The life expectancy gap for men and women is closing in western nations because women are being pushed towards traditionally male roles which has lead to them assuming some of the worst aspects of life - excessive drinking, greater risk taking, greater stress levels. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/life-expectancy-gap-closing-between-men-and-women/article1208933/ http://www.nbcnews.com/id/47466204/ns/health-mens_health/t/american-men-finally-closing-longevity-gender-gap/ |
forgiveness:Surulere is ok to be honest, just a bit too crowded for me. That's the problem with most of the Lagos mainland, it's overcrowded and the infrastructure suffers as a result. |
onyi4edu:There is wisdom in silence but necessarily in old age. If Nigerians did not know this before they should know it now. |
