He was only 16 at the time of the offence and therefore himself a minor - not subject to such lengthy sentencing.
There was indeed a marriage and therefore could not be charged with rape.
The charge of abduction was not proven.

The huge cost of transportation in view of the great distance between Kano and Bayelsa, attendant with the real threat to the physical safety of his witnesses simply meant that Yunusa could not afford the money to put up an effective defence against his case.

However, all is not completely lost; because he currently stands a good chance of having most of the convictions against him quashed on appeal - for which he has every right to pursue.
