FamilyShould Parents Be Held Accountable For Their Adult Children's Behavior? by Ndipe(op): 2:20am On Jan 31, 2013
It's very embarrassing for any law abiding parent to have a wayward child out of fear that their good name would be dragged in the mud by their actions. Back in Nigeria, the adult son of a high ranking church official was suspected of breaking into my alma mata's chapel and looting items, much to the consternation of my relatives, who wondered breathlessly, "What of his parents"? I simply brushed his involvement aside because of his notorious reputation on campus. It got so worse that according to one of my school mates, his father had threatened to disown him, much to his wife's chagrin (the guy's mom) who cried. Not long ago, a prominent man's daughter recently got a divorce and one of my friends said something to the effect that since her father holds a prominent position in the Church, then perhaps, he ought to have done something (I have forgotten exactly how he paraphrased it, but he sort of held her father accountable particularly since the girl gave birth while she was still a teenager. I disagreed with him.

And my question is this: Should parents be held accountable for the bad actions of their adult children?
FamilyRe: Think Before You Send Your Kids Abroad by Ndipe(m): 1:59am On Jan 31, 2013
Sisi_Kill: Yeah, I think about this issue every time I see how well behaved ALL the children raised in Nigeria are.

Yep, the children who join cults, who rape, steal, murder, do drugs and yahoo yahoo their way to expensive lives . . .they surely got the right foundation, after all they weren't sent abroad.

Lovely!!
I see your point, but generally speaking it's easier for a child who lives abroad without parental supervision to fall into bad company than those who live in Nigeria under the guidance of their parents. I cant encourage any parent to send their child to the USA before the age of 18 years old.

Enid Blyton's novels were part of our upbringing in the literary world and fantasy of a child's imagination. But truth be told, as an adult, I prefer African Writer's series now.

CrimeRe: 19-year-old Boy Molested & Robbed In Lagos by Ndipe(m):

This is nothing new in Nigerian journalism. In the 90's, there was one famous junk magazine called Akapa's top magazine. the man, Lawrence Akapa, would cover very sensational headlines to increase readership. One was the infamous headline that Michael Jackson had a Nigerian girlfriend. Classique magazine later on found out that he would lift pages of celebrities from foreign magazine (I actually saw proof of it), change their names (like vanguard newspaper did) to corroborate their false story. It happened more than once and when his lies were exposed, as much as he denied it, the magazine went out of biz.

As for the story about the 'dilema' on the childless couple, I read it back in Nigeria, then to read the same story again 20 or so years later was something. I believed the first story, of course, I did not fall for the second one again. I wished I had a copy of the initial copy, but who would have thought it would be reprinted again decades later.

Shame!
HealthRe: Nigerian Medical Students To Study Traditional Medicine by Ndipe(m): 4:06am On Jan 23, 2013
It's long overdue. In America, chinese medicines like acupuncture and herbs are making inroads even in hospitals and are covered by insurance. See chinese stores brazenly selling herbs and people and magazines touting the efficacy of these herbs. Truth is that our people are so ashamed of our culture like african herbs, that they would rather ignore it's potency and focus on western medicines. The drawback (or what I am totally against) is the use of incantations, otherwise, I am all for it. Infact, studies should be conducted on the efficacy of traditional medicines. Our forefathers relied on it and rarely got sick. Why should we abandon it now?

As long as it doesnt involve incantations, I am ok with it.

I dont know if this story is true or not, but for those questioning the reliable news that vanguard newspapers cover, I have my own experience.

back in Nigeria, I think in the 70's or 80's, I read a story of a childless couple who were at odds over the division of their property. the root of their disagreement stemmed from the discovery that a man had stepped out and claimed that the childless man was his father and the husband of this woman admitted that he recalled having an affair with the mother of this boy. as such, he was willing to claim the boy as his own son and have him inherit his property despite protests from his wife that their earlier agreement would be to divide their properties amongst their relatives upon their dead since they were childless. Readers were asked to weigh in by offering their opinion. I disregarded the story after a while.

More than 20 years later, while browsing at the vanguard newspaper at stanford university library, I came across the same story again in its original form in the newspaper. I wanted to write to the editors to tell them not to hoodwink us with this same story again, but I did not have the original copy of the same story that they covered way back when I lived in Nigeria.

so, a word of caution, dont believe every story that you read in the papers.
PoliticsRe: Dele Giwa's Mother Dies At 87 by Ndipe(m):
stagger: Florence Ita-Giwa was Dele Giwa's first wife. Even though they eventually parted ways, the senator retained his surname. She even attended his funeral where she shed loads of tears. I read the interview she gave sometime in 1987 where it was evident that she still had feelings for Dele. She mentioned youthful exuberance and emotional immaturity on their part for the failure of their union.

So there is your answer.
Florence Ita Giwa, I think, was his second wife. Dele was previously married to a black american who bore him, I think, 2 children.

God called Abraham from his father's land to an unknown land where He made His promises to him that in him all nations will be blessed. So, technically, Abraham was not a jew by birth, he was called out of his father's land by God and through him (Jesus Christ being his descent) came to be blessed.

FamilyRe: If You Found Out Your Adopted Child Was Stolen? by Ndipe(op): 11:15pm On Dec 28, 2012
Child trafficking is rife in China where male kids are favored over female kids. And you know China is very strict that they have enacted a law on the one child policy whereby if you have more than one, you are fined. So, most parents are desperate to have a male child. And there are stories of kids being abducted and later on sold to unsuspecting couples eager to have a male child.

FamilyIf You Found Out Your Adopted Child Was Stolen? by Ndipe(op):
After battling with infertility for a long time with your spouse, both of you finally reach an agreement to adopt a baby. Through an adoption agency, you are matched up with an adorable infant and there is an instant connection. You pay the adoption fees, legalize the paperwork and boom, take them home and raise them up in a normal and loving setting. Then five years down the road, you read a disturbing report in the papers of child abduction cases with photos of missing children. Beneath these pictures (including yours) is this question, "have you seen this child" and instantly know that it's your child.

What would you do? Meanwhile, your child is now five years old.
Meanwhile read this story below.

I have edited some parts of this discourse. Say this happened within the time frame of five years after the adoption?

When people tend to look alike and all that, dont rule out the fact that they maybe related to one another. I wouldnt rule out a DNA test if the resemblance is striking. Remember that in the olden days, twins were left to die in the forest. There is this story I read of a chinese woman who was always mistaken for another person. Out of curiousity or so, she tracked down that lady and found out that they were twins, but she never knew that she was a twin.

Thank God for the missionaries like Mary Slessor who helped put an end to the killing of twins and human sacrifices. For how long would this barbaric and inhumane act be tolerated under the guise of culture evolving if not for the intervention of these missionaries? There is good and bad in colonialism, lets put it that way.
