United States of Africa.

I like to visit the abroad, but home is home and home is sweet. tongue
My guy just went for a relaxing trip to UK for New Year's. Just him, book hotel two weeks to relieve stress. If he was living in UK he could not have afforded that hotel.

Some people will blast me, but I think the people who are unable to find a way in Nigeria, will also be unable to find a way abroad. tongue
They will say: "the system this, the system that", but ask them to not cheat their clients, or pay their taxes, they will tell you they are smart.

Matter dey abeg

The problem with many of you is you never ask questions

If that is the official name

Who named it on what date
Very simple questions you are telling stores
It was named by the Military Administration (Federal and Lagos State put funds into it) - when Lagos was still the national capital. IBB saw it to completion after it had been abandoned for a while, and commissioned it in 1990 (don't remember the date). However the name was decided by members of the administration - we don't know - but they agreed to name it so. FGN also named Eko Bridge (2nd Mainland), and the British named Carter Bridge (after a former Governor of the Lagos Colony). And just for extra marks, Lekki – Ikoyi Link Bridge was named by Lagos State Gov't.
Culture › Re: What Happens When You Whistle At Night? by nextstep(m): 6:25am On Feb 11, 2022
Nothing.

Even the myth about attracting snakes: they don't have external ears to pickup sound from the air, though they can feel vibrations that reach the ground (or if you're very close). The high frequencies of whistling does not vibrate the ground, so they can't hear you whistle.

Now if you have a boombox and are playing nice and loud, then yes, snakes can pick that up.

But no matter, we ain't calling the second bridge over Orimili "Buhari Bridge", that one na F9. Was the name "Goodluck Jonathan Bridge" even being considered? That wan too sef no go enter. They can name it what they want but:

2nd Niger Bridge it is.

Join the club, it's as nature intended. I'm a father ... I like it sweet and raw too... as possibly 90% of the father out there :-)

Step up and take responsibility, my man. At least you had the courage to come and ask here, but you need to take care of the life you made. I first became a father 15 years ago, and believe me, I was a bit shocked with the news. Same story: diving into the stream without boxers. You may think 15-18 years is a long time to be responsible for somebody else's life, but if you can get over your selfishness, you'll discover the joys (and pains) of parenthood. In another 5 years, my son is going to become less dependent on me, a strapping young lad, and I'm grateful we (his parents) did the right thing.

Nothing more painful than not being around, then regretting when the children become adult. You'll never get this time back.

If they can create drones why are y fascinated of a man less helicopter I thought u were an engineer
It's just that man-less helicopters evoked this scene from Terminator II (forward to 1:50), which since 1992 has remained in my mind. As an engineer I can follow the logical steps to the possibilities of this war fought with machines against humans. There's just something scary about helicopters that can hover, slowly approach you and get real close, all the while turning to face you no matter how you run, pouring hot iron in your direction.

One doesn't get that sort of visceral reaction from a drone (at least the ones that fly high and drop their payload from up high). And the smaller drones (the kind we use for taking pictures) aren't big enough to carry much firepower. (You could argue that these drones are simply smaller helicopters in a way).

Indeed. But let's not forget that China makes all the technology it needs to duplicate this. China is getting strong in AI and software, in addition to being a world class manufacturer of high tech.

I'm an engineer so very impressed on that level.

I can't help but recall Terminator though... when those automated attack helicopters started wiping out people ... scary to imagine if the computers malfunction and no longer obey human instructions.

vibre:
Going by your opinion, only people who have been in government before have a right to criticize the government right? How does that sound like a sensible argument to you?
I don't think that was my intention. My comment was in reply to somebody stating that Biden was a fool for easing sanctions on Iran.

I was pointing out that it's more likely President Biden - having been in government for decades, making laws and crafting foreign policy - is in a far better position to assess the gravity of the decision than the person calling him a fool, who likely doesn't have the experience to back up their assertion.

We're all free to criticize and bring unique insight, but I often find the criticisms particularly unhelpful (and rather pompous) when the critic has not demonstrated a well-thought out alternative, nor is privy to all the information, compromises, and responsibilities that go into making the decisions.

I love how people who have not been in government - nor been in charge of foreign policy nor making laws - for decades, are quick to judge the decisions of those who have.

I'm not saying experience equals perfection, but man, it's got to take some arrogance to think we are better informed to make make better decisions.

That's the point: use what you see others using. No matter the answer you get here on Nairaland, whether to jump on your ass or not depends on the officers' temperament.

You can perhaps befriend an officer or two, and take them to location with you. Of course you will need to find them something, but it's way cheaper than having somebody extort you because of their interpretation of the law.

Autos › Re: Inside Dangote multi Billion naira car assembling plant (photos) by nextstep(m): 6:56pm On Feb 03, 2022
backbencher:
The cars are going to be expensive as Innoson.
The problem/reason why cars are expensive in Nigeria is because, quite simply, we don't make the tiny components that make up most of the car.
For now, the main market would be, like Innoson, government and private companies. Ordinary Nigerians cannot buy a new assembled in Nigeria car.
Nor can they afford a newly assembled car from Japan or USA. New cars are expensive to make, and I would rather Innoson continue making good quality (albeit expensive) new cars, which will eventually reach the used-market after 5-7 years. As more of these cars transition to the used market, you'll see more people being able to afford them.

We don't make all the components, but an increasing number of car parts/components are being made by smaller companies around Nnewi. The cost still won't come down because of the economics of making cars.

Billingslord:
that is why I like Lagos and other SW state they can never patronize that innosson sub standard vehicle.
Lagos govts know what dangote mean for lagos,so why will they leave dangote vehicle and patronize innosson that has no value to their state.
That's a very interesting statement considering that the same Lagos State buys cars made in USA, Japan, and Germany... by your logic, what value have those companies added to Lagos state? How many tomatoes does Lagos produce? Yet it's likely the highest consumer of tinned tomato. What value are the tomatoes grown in Kaduna adding to Lagos?

That aside, I like to see this: we need many car and truck assemblers/manufacturers in as many states as possible. All states should patronize all Nigerian car brands because ultimately it's good for us all.

What could be the cause . . . overspeeding?
I doubt cos those commercial yellow buses can’t fire much.
I drove through that route yesterday and I can say that road is not for jallopy.[/quote]Likely swerving too quickly on high speed... adding weight to the top of the bus moves center of gravity upwards so it's much more likely to tumble if you make sudden lane shifts.

People shouting about the price of rice... hopefully you will think long term before voting for a scam artist.

The cost of building a rice mill has practically trebled since 2015 (I'm just going by exchange rate of forex needed to import the machines); farmers are being killed or ransomed to poverty; transport def don add moni; and various agberos have their different taxes. So why should anybody reduce price when their costs have increased so much?

One thing that can definitely reduce price of rice: Nigerians should eat less rice. Yes I said it. More akpu and garri.

Please thank Ralph Nader, for harassing US automakers into adding safety features like seat belts. Thank US congress for making the necessary laws. Thank auto manufacturers for innovations like airbags, crumple zones, traction control, grippy tires, antilock brakes.

But some people will take all of these efforts and research for granted, to thank God for saving them from their own carelessness. The same God that doesn't mind the death of innocent schoolkids when a truck crashes into them - due to another driver's carelessness.
