CelebritiesRe: The Matter Of "Beyonce" Vs "Mrs Carter" by pak: 8:09pm On Feb 08, 2013
ItsModella: That is debatable. What makes people feel best isn't necessarily what is best for them. A feminist advocates for equal rights for women. But then, I agree with your point, we are way past the stage of debating whether it is proper to bear your husband's name. Personally, I don't think embracing your husband's name makes you more of a wife or mother. I can also argue that embracing your husband's name does not make you lose your identity, rather it helps you create a family identity. It all depends on the individual.
c'est génial.

Shollypopz: @pro1: where is Mariah Carey today?? I'm sorry but nobody is searching for Mariah Carey, a legend?? Yes, but dead career wise!! (That's why she's a judge on American Idol). Look at Beyonce's audience though. Jeez, look at Beyonce's music, and tell me which doesn't have sexx appeal. Beyonce is no Adele, she is sexy and cool. No one wants a mummy Beyonce! Well my second comment on this thread addresses more, no time!

@pak: stop quoting me, like seriously dude. Stop unless u have something reasonable to say, STOP!!

You can always trust Nairalanders to go against anything that has to do with feminism. They do have a point! Do not come on interviews as Beyonce and say you want your music to empower women, bah blah about anthem for women around the world and then lose your identity when you get married. Abeg, go finish high school Beyonce!
You really need to chill out.

Two questions spring to mind - one, How many times have I quoted you ? (outside this particular thread of course) and two, didn't I quote 2 other respondents on the same post ? so why give the impression that I'm trolling you or somethin ?
I didn't agree with your assertions and I think you should just take it in good faith. 'simples'

P.S. - Just saw your response to the mystikal guy, am at a loss here.
If you can't stand the heat then leave the g**d**mn kitchen.
If you don't want critical responses, then don't post. Are you a newbie ?
Wonder why you feel you have to attack or insult anybody with contrary opinions ?

13 volts' post is actually a relevant contribution.

Many people outside the Northern have a skewed percerption of Northerners and Hausa.

The problem is many never bother to find out the finer intricacies and this has been to the detriment of the entity called Nigeria

La Parisienne: So what's your own ''intelligent reply'' to the topic? Just asking. . .

@Topic
Beyonce can do whatever she wants with her life, none of my business. I don't care for her life shows anyway, cos she's a terrible lip-syncher.

Btw, check out the videos she made with her husband. Then you'll have an idea of what their relationship seems like.
Pls, I don't have broadband internet presently, (using phone cnxn) so videos are out. Can you tell us the inference you made (or you expect us to make) from the videos ?

Shollypopz: I see where the feminists are coming from, Beyonce promoting Mrs Carter further proves women losing their identity when they get married. She is Mrs Carter quite alright, nobody is disputing that but Beyonce is a brand name, her identity, a representation of her achievements, artistry, and influencing power that she has been able to acquire throughout her working years. Losing Beyonce for Mrs Carter is a st*upid move!
The Mrs title is not an achievement but a title for addressing married women, nothing special. No one wants to see Mrs Carter, we all pay to watch and be entertained by Beyonce
oh dear !!!

pro01: SMH at bitter 'feminists' questioning an adult woman's personal choices.

In any case, from a marketing point of view, there is nothing to suggest that the 'Mrs Carter' brand would not be as powerful - if not more so - than the Beyonce mononym. Don't forget that being a married woman and a mother necessarily diminishes the 'sassy' and 'sultry' image ordinarily associated with a young and beautiful female pop star (ask Mariah Carey).

One can therefore argue that in a situaion where a woman such as Beyonce finds herself married to an equally famous music star, and where they have increasingly crafted an image of the pre-eminent musical royalty, and have gone ahead to start raising a family, it might in fact prove a marketing masterstroke to evolve a new brand image based on some kind of 'The First Family of Music' notion. . . and that would involve adopting her husband's name (Carter), which in itself is sufficiently popular, powerful, prestigious, and commercially viable.
I find this quite intelligent, boss

Osheshe: I completely agree with the fact that Rihanna has the right to make her own choices, right or wrong. Like someone aptly put it, its her life.

I'm amazed and taken aback by some comments from some 'alpha' males on this thread though. There is no justification whatsoever, under the sun, moon or stars for laying your hands on a female; your mother, sister, wife/girlfriend.

Some guys are just brutes...who like to enforce their superiority by pouncing on a woman to 'teach' her a lesson. The kind who wear bow ties and look all handsome and well-groomed on the outside, but are devious animals inside.

To physically abuse and batter someone for what? What she did? Or didn't do? How she did it? What she said? Or didn't say? How she said it? Absolute crap.

@ Ogugua...you're even being nice abourrit. Any man that lays half a finger on me...just half...will not live to tell the story. Are you a bas.tard? If my father didn't beat me...and still yet he corrected my wrongs to give me a sound up-bringing, who are you to exercise your Mike Tyson moves on me?

My boyfriend? You'll cool off in jail where I'll personally arrange for you to be gang-ra-ped and severally assaulted. My husband? This is the part where that 'for better or worse' clause in the wedding vows rears its ugly head...yeah...I can almost feel the pack of angry male wolves closing in at this statement.

I'll rather be a single mother and widow undecided (because I will exact my revenge) than endure a loveless marriage...rubbish!
You're beautiful.

ogugua88: Granted, her happiness comes first,
... .best statement you've made all day, and that's the crux of my arguments

ogugua88:
but I truly don't know of anyone who is happy with someone who punched her face black and blue, gave her a swollen eye, and left bite marks on her body. It was a brutal beating and the world saw it. People who abuse tend to be repeat abusers. Sure, maybe Chris is an exception, but with his recent outburst, I doubt anyone believes that.

What Chris did was terrible, inhuman, stupid . . . . . but I doubt if Ogugua is a saint . . .

I personally might not give people such second chances (and I might not advice my sister or daughter to do so) but Rihanna has decided to give him a second chance. it might not work out and it might. Let's just keep fingers crossed and if its your disposition, pray for her.

ogugua88:

There's nothing worse than making the same mistake and having people tell you "I told you so". That's just my own. *shrugs*
Now this is the part that really got me . . . .
First, it wasn't a mistake to go out with Chris in the first place, it might (and it might not) be to give him another try. Whichever way, its a road she's never crossed before.

And two, really you've always looked the daring kind but this statement is a total knock off. I personally doubt if people can achieve greatness or discover themselves and find lasting peace, joy e.t.c if they never put themselves in a situation where people can tell them 'I told you so. . . . '
I have decided to leave my life in a way where my decisions won't be depended on what I think people will say/feel whether I succeed or not, I urge you to do same .
I just recently quit a promising paid employment voluntarily and (God forbid) if two years down the line, nothing concrete shows up, I can imagine the number of 'I told you so' but then I've made my choice.
CelebritiesRe: Jay-Z Threatens To "Finish Off" Chris Brown by pak: 8:40am On Feb 05, 2013
ogugua88: Of course it's her life. Nobody dey hold am. Good for her.

All I'm saying is when it happens again, no one will send. She had outpouring and support from women's group globally, so imagine their shock when someone who was advocating for them went back on her word and their philosophy lol.
Seriously Ogugua,
She doesn't need their support, abeg let them go and sit down in a corner with their support. Have they finished supporting themselves before coming to support Rihanna ?

Everybody has a right to go back on their words if they feel certain circumstances will lead them to making better choices. Is Rihanna exempt becuase she's a star ? And which philosophy are you talking about sister ?
Let them go stick their philosophy where the sun don't shine (pardon my expression). Rihanna is not responsible for maintaining anybody's philosphy, she might be a star but she has just ONE life to live. I'll always love the Tupac interview where he argued that there was no way he will be responsible for the action of 6 million people. He could only dictate his decisions.

Rihanna might be wrong but Ogugua also makes some wrong decisions too . .. . . .
CelebritiesRe: Jay-Z Threatens To "Finish Off" Chris Brown by pak: 7:43am On Feb 05, 2013
ogugua88: He should talk to that oversabi of a protégé they call Rihanna. Nothing will make me go back to someone who beat me. Absolutely nothing. No one deserves to be beaten, but if she's beaten again, no one will shed the same tears twice.
,

That's why its 'her life'.

I am 'controversially' with Rihanna on this. No, I don't agree with her decision of returning to Chris Brown but what I support is her choice of living her life, not the way the world wants, not the way Oprah wants, not the way Ogugua wants, not the way PAK wants, BUT THE WAY SHE WANTS without us condemning her for it.

In her last interview, she stated clearly that its somethin that makes her feel happy. You don't know her personally, you don't know Chris Brown, you don't know the intricacies of the relationship so how in the world will you determine what's going to make them happy.

At the end of the day, I support her because she took the decision not for superficial reasons like furthering her career (it might even damage things a wee bit) or money (I even think she's richer than Chris) but because deep down she truly believes she'll be happy with Chris. It might be a mistake, I admit but please let her be.

There are no perfect rules in this situation.

Logicboy03: People like you are what the media need to perpetuate propaganda. They tell you who to worship as a hero and you follow., I despise the extremist views as much as the next person but Malala is not the first nor last woman or girl to fight against extremists.

There are many othere who are not heard. There are others who have fought but yet got little recognition. The girl deserves a reward or a medal or award but not a nobel peace prize.
One thing you should understand is that if Malala wins the award, it will not just be for her but for the countless 'unknown' faces who have also stood against terror even in the face of danger.
Malala is sort of a poster child.
When Obama won the award a while back, the panel made it clear that it was not just about his achievements but also about how the Nobel prixe could spur him on to make further contributions to world peace.

I see no bigger motivation for the battle against oppression and violence (and the marginalixation of female children) than to recognize a girl who did just that against all odds.

Have you ever thought of how many malala will arise if she nicks this ? That's even enough reason to give her the award in the first place
Foreign AffairsRe: Malala Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize by pak:
Despite her Young age, I regard Maalala as one of my heroes.

She deserves the Nobel award.

For the naysayers, please read up on her advocacy against the taliban before displaying your ignorance here.

This is a girl who was/is very willing to put her life on the line to seek a better lot for girl children like her. She's not doing it so that she can get funds from UNESCO or the likes or for popularity. She is willing to fight battles that grown men run from.

Even Jesus recognizes her sacrifices as an ultimate gesture.

Maalala is one of those people whose names will continue to ring a bell, generations after we all might have left this planet

I remember Rufai's wonder saves against Egypt

I remember Rufai's wonder penalty saves against algeria

I remember Keshi's thunder free kick that hit the cross bar in the final

I remember Henry Nwosu's disqualified goal in the final

. . .and sadly, I remember Emmanuel Kunde's penalty that beat Rufai for the cup cry

StarBoard: You lie.
Keshi, Eguavoen, Uche Okafor Siasia NEVER smelt Algeria 1990.
Yekini was the only one who went of the ones you listed.
We only went with three foreign based players: Andrew Uwe (Roselare ,Belgium),Rashidi Yekini (Africa Sports,Ivory Coast) and Friday Elahor (Brondby, Denmark).
The rest were home-based players: Alloy Agu(ACB)Captain, Christian Obi (?),Abdul Aminu (El Kanemi), Ademola Adeshina(Shooting Stars) Benedict Iroha, Uche Okechukwu and Thompson Oliha (Iwuanayawu Nationale), Isaac Semitoje and Baldwin Bazuaye(Bendel Insurance),Herbert Anijekwu and Emmanuel Okocha (Rangers) Wasiu Ipaye (First Bank),Tajudeen Oyekanmi, Ayo Ogunlana and Daniel Amokachi (Ranchers Bees, Kaduna),Moses Kpakor (BCC Lions).
Of the above listed, only Yekini, Andrew Uweh and Ademola Adeshina had been to the Nations cup previously.
You are absolutely correct !

and to all saying that this team is young and inexperienced and all that stuff . . .

Please remember that age is just a number in Nigerian football. Every sensible Nigerian coach should just go out there and put his best fut forward.

There is no proof that Brown Ideye or Emenike are younger than Osaze Odemwingie despite the latter having been in the eagles for nigh on a decade. How are you sure Yobo is actually older than Efe Ambrose and Obobajana ? Are you their mothers.

Where is Stanley Okoro ? Where is Femi Opabunmi ? Where is Ogbeche ? Where are all those 'under 17' boys that won the world cup in 2007. Where is Friday Christopher ? How come Aghahowa played is best football for Nigeria at 'age 22' ?

All these talk of young, inexperienced, team of the future is hogwash. I say hogwash for two reasons.

One is young or not, a good team will always impress with their football , regardless of whether they win or not. Did you see how young the Ghanian team that got to the final at the 2010 nations cup (beating Nigeria along the way) was ?

The Nigerian team at Cairo '91 and Saudi '89 failed to win anything but everyone that saw them (including the great Pele) knew those guys were heading for something big. These guys play like they are going nowhere.

Two, any attempt by a Nigerian coach to build solely for the future (Onigbinde, are you listening) ends up being an exercise in futility. It only ends up with the team failing both now and in the future. With the coach getting sacked. The Super Eagles is neither a rehabilitation ground nor a secondary school - building future team is the prerogative of our junior teams

Ayee Idris: Salam brother mine. Its easier said than done. I tried to have my father converted as my middle name while adopting his, citing the islamic reasons and because of my certificates, and he said No, its against our "culture". EventuaLly, I had to drop my father's name completely. Most times, where there is a clash between accepted cultural practices and islam doctrines, the former always seems to come up on top.
I totally love your comments and please salute your dad for me, He must be a very reasonable person.

My take is that regardless of religous creed, muslim, christian or pagan, Africa will only progress when we learn to think for ourselves.

We all believe our respective religions descended from God but reality makes us understand that the culture of the region where those religion originates from heavily influence it's practices.

I do not have problems with accepting a foreign religion, its a personal choice but the most important thing is for us to maintain and respect our own indigenous culture and values
