Can some body out there believe this? But it truly happened,,I have heard of cases where people engaged in fight after watching some of these foreign football matches and ended up killing one another.

Suleiman Alphonso Omondi, a 29-year-old Kenyan living in the capital Nairobi's Embakasi neighbourhood, hanged himself in his Arsenal shirt after the match.

"We were watching the match at Bamba 70 pub, and when Arsenal was defeated, Suleiman just walked out in protest and he was crying," Calvin Otieno, one of his friends, said.

"We didn't know he was going to hang himself until this morning when we received the reports and came here to find his body at the balcony," Otieno said outside the deceased's home.

Arsenal slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, capping a disappointing season for the Gunners who were already out of the Premier League title race early in the season.

In my part of Delta State, particularly among the Itsekiri and Ijaw communities in the riverine areas, there are no churches, let alone schools, health centres, electricity and so on. Go to Bayelsa, Akwa-Ibom and others, the story is largely the same. Every pastor wants to be in the city where he/she can have all worldly necessities of life. Our residential quarters, schools, and even roads have been mercilessly and lawlessly turned to churches, in reckless disregard of the right to freedom of religion as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The more the churches, with their uncontrollable loud speakers and fiery prayers, the more the high rate of crime and criminality in the society.

Most of their prayers often hang and end right there on the ceilings of their churches, as it appears God has turned His ears against the prayers of this set of pretentious and insidious elements, masquerading as Christians. Daily, everybody wants to either become a politician or a pastor. Churches are being planted as investment, a means of looting the poor and those who cannot differentiate between fake and original commands of the Bible. Christ has become the easiest and most marketable tool to rob, to cheat and to sell products, including fake ones, in the public, commercial buses inclusive. After political robbers rig elections, pastors would pray God to grant them long tenure, and even urge their congregations and general public to support a government that was not voted for by the electorate.

People are now paying for prayers; paying for praising and worshiping their heavenly Father. No wonder ladies are going into fornication and/or prostitution in order to pay their tithes and offerings, some of which are up to eight (if not more), alongside forceful vows and other levies. In the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) led by Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, there are divisions: Yoruba caucus, Igbo caucus, Delta/Edo caucus, etc; everybody fighting for his selfish interest; not the preaching of the gospel of salvation, which our Lord Jesus Christ upheld.

A few months ago, one of the Pentecostal pastors took a loan from a bank and bought the Surulere, Lagos-based training centre of the Times Journalism Institute (TJI), a training wing of Daily Times of Nigeria Plc. Before the property was advertised for sale in "The Guardian" by the Federal Government, the pastor, in conspiracy with some top government officials, had long bought the property, demolished structures he deemed unfit and erected his multi-million naira church thereon; while deluding executives of the Students' Union Government (SUG) and some members of staff of the TJI that the place the church was built on was leased to him for three years. I wish to say the rest is history, as the Chairman of Daily Times and others are handling the matter confidentially.

A few months ago, when I was in Warri with members of my extended family, I was invited to a church programme. The church is located at Iyara Street. Rather than preaching salvation, it was all prosperity, how to give and invest in the lives of men of God. I had no choice than to put on my recorder to record the rantings of the guest speakers. The host pastor, who is also the founder/General Overseer, summarised it all when he told the congregation to go and close their bank accounts and bring the money to sow a seed of faith in their lives (pastors). Those who did not have money, let alone bank accounts, were told to go and borrow, deluding the congregation that it is only when they do that, that God would be challenged to answer their cries and heart desires. Right now, the GO has three cars and a personal driver! Perhaps, the next plan will be to establish a Bible college or university, and later, the purchase of a jet! Thereafter, the Isiekwenes of this deceitful world would feed us with all kinds of propagandist explanations.

While urging us to be wise as the serpent and smart as the dove, the Bible (I John 2:5-6) tells us: "If someone says, I belong to God; but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and does not live in the truth. But those who obey God's word really do love Him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Christ did." While warning us in II John 1:10-11 that "If someone comes to your meeting and does not teach the truth about Christ, don't invite him to your house or encourage him in any way; anyone who encourages him becomes a partner in his evil work," Matthew 7:21-23 further notes: "Not all people who sound religious are really godly. They may refer to Me as 'Lord', but they still won't enter the kingdom of heaven. The decisive issue is whether they obey my Father in heaven. On judgment day, many will tell Me, 'Lord, Lord,' we prophesied in Your name and cast out demons in Your name and performed many miracles in Your name. But I will reply, 'I never knew you. Go away; the things you did were unauthorised."

Waxing philosophical, the great philosopher, Francois Arouet, lamented: "What a terrible time this is to be a Christian. The church has failed and betrayed us, and the ministry preaches hate and murder. If there is a sane and reasoning voice in the Christian church today, it is sadly silent." Christianity is not a theory or speculation, but a life; not philosophy of life, but a life and a living process. Samuel Taylor Coleridge, a renowned writer, noted: "He who begins by loving Christianity better than truth, will proceed by loving his own sect or church better than Christianity, and end in loving himself better than all." I believe we can learn from history how past generations thought and acted; how they responded to the demands of their time and how they solved their problems, worshipped their God.

The main thing history teaches is that human action has consequences and that certain choices, once made, cannot be undone. They foreclose the possibility of making other choices and thus they determine future events. Finally, in the words of the celebrated philosopher, C.I. Scofield, I say, "The church has failed to follow her appointed pathway of separation, holiness, heavenliness and testimony to an absent but coming Christ; she has turned aside from that purpose to the work of civilising the world, building magnificent temples, and acquiring earthly power and wealth; and, in this way, has ceased to follow in the footsteps of Him who had not where to lay His head."

THE Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that the country’s financial sector faces uncertain times. Also, the apex bank said the CBN might cease to exist in the next 50 years if the monetary union being envisaged comes to fruition.

Governor of the CBN, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, disclosed this in Abuja on Monday at the beginning of a week-long 50th anniversary of the apex bank.

Going down memory lane, Professor Soludo said the CBN had made some remarkable achievements in the last 50 years.

Some of these, according to him, were the increase in the country’s GDP from N2.25 billion in 1960 to N24 trillion in 2009, the rise in external reserves from $602.8 million in 1960 to $47 billion in 2009.

Other achievements, he said, were the increase in the number of banks and their branches from 12 and 160 respectively to 24 and 5,434. He also said there had been a significant increase in the number of depositors from 13 million in 1960 to 35 million in 2009.

Notwithstanding these achievements, the CBN governor said there was no cause for celebration as the global financial meltdown and the very poor state of the Nigerian economy had detracted from the success in the last 50 years.

‘’We should bow our heads in sobriety to reflect on the road ahead,” Professor Soludo said.

On the future, the apex bank boss said the road ahead for the financial system was bumpy as a result of globalisation

He said Nigerian banks were vulnerable to all the attendant consequences of globalisation while they faced a future that was uncertain.

Professor Soludo said in the next 50 years, there might not be anything like the CBN again if the African Central Bank being envisaged and the monetary union became a reality.

In a keynote address delivered on behalf of President Umaru Yar’Adua by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Mansur Muhtar, the president, like Professor Soludo, agreed that the CBN achievements notwithstanding, a number of challenges still remained.

He said these challenges had been magnified in scope by the ongoing global financial crisis, whose second round knock-on-effects had already begun to take its toll on the economy and the financial system through marked deterioration in the fiscal and external accounts.


“It is, therefore, appropriate that we use this moment to not just review landmark historical trajectories of the bank, but to also engage in deeper reflections on how we build on the progress so far made to further strengthen the capabilities of the CBN and enhance its capacities in executing its mandate, particularly against the background of the ongoing global economic slowdown,” the president remarked.

The president asked the CBN to undertake a critical review of its human resource-base and capabilities and systems, processes and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

President Yar’Adua also said the apex bank should look beyond boundaries to draw lessons and benefit from other countries’ experiences

A pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Israel Kehinde Ajayi, 40, has lost his wife, former Miss Anita Uzowuru, to pastor Godwin Mbamara of Rehoboth Covenant Bible Church, Olorunsogo, Mushin, Lagos.


P.M.NEWS learnt that the Kabba, Kogi State-born Ajayi and Anita, a nurse from Umudike Mbano, Imo state, were joined at the Federal Marriage Registry, Ikoyi, Lagos, on 15 February, 2008. Without the dissolution of the marriage with Ajayi, Anita again signed the dotted lines on Saturday, at 25/27, Olusoga Street, Mushin, when Rehoboth Bible Church organised a wedding for her and pastor Mbamara.

In an interview with P.M.NEWS, Ajayi said: “Anita said she cannot marry a wretched pastor like me who has no car. I understand the pastor she ran to owns a car. What made our relationship go sour was that Anita wanted us to travel overseas where she can practice as a nurse, whereas I insisted that she should have a child for me before we travelled.”

Ajayi said family friends informed him of Anita’s secret engagement to one pastor Mbamara, whom she actually married in Mushin, on 25 April. But at the last minute, the venue was changed from End-Time Army Church, Mushin, to 25/27, Olusoga Street, Mushin. Contacted before the Saturday marriage, Anita admitted she went to Ikoyi Marriage Registry with Ajayi in error because it was part of his condition to assist her to travel to London. But when he could not fulfil his part of the arrangement, she decided to forget about him.

“He told me I have to claim to be his wife so that he could take me to the embassy and introduce me to leaders of the RCCG. I tried as much as possible to satisfy his conditions to be able to embark on the overseas journey. “At a stage, he was extorting money from me. I cannot now remember how much he collected from me, but it could be up to N100,000. I deserted him when he was about to milk me dry and, of course, the travel plan failed,” Anita explained.

Rev. (Dr.) David Adetiloye, Senior Pastor of End-Time Army Church, who facilitated the meeting with Anita in his church, was not present during the interview. But she was accompanied by her pastor, Rev. Peter Daniel, who told P.M.NEWS that Anita regretted her mistake going into the relationship with Ajayi. P.M.NEWS, last Saturday, witnessed the wedding between Anita and pastor Godwin Mbamara, at the new venue. The hall was filled to capacity. The marriage was contracted by officials of Rehoboth Covenant Bible Church, led by Rev. Peter Daniel.

Evangelist Olu Olatinwo charged the couple with the theme: Sacrifice Of Love, quoting John 3:16 in an exhortation that received loud ovation from the sizeable audience. With just three items to fulfil the order of the wedding service, Rev. Peter Daniel fished out P.M.NEWS reporter from among the audience and handed him over to the policemen at the venue. The policemen intimidated, harassed and assaulted him. They seized his bag, searched him and after creating a rowdy scene at the front of the hall for about 30 minutes, arrested and took him to Area D Police Headquarters, Mushin.

At the station, the reporter managed to send a phone call to his editor who contacted the Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Frank Mba, who intervened and the reporter was promptly released. Our reporter was let off the hook after one of the Uzowurus (Anita’s family) entered a ‘report’ into the police station diary that he was in the police station to report ‘an intruder’ at his niece’s wedding. The address and other particulars of the reporter were also recorded.

The General Overseer of Christ Dynasty, Pastor Samuel Ikechukwu, has been arrested by the police in Idimu Division, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding a church member, identified as Ehi, of N4.5 million.


Pastor Sam, as he is popularly called, was arrested at the church premises, 29 Abdul Salau Street, Old Garrage bus stop, Isheri Olofin, a Lagos suburb. P.M.NEWS gathered that the Ebonyi state pastor, son of a female customs officer serving in Katsina state, was alleged to have defrauded Ehi, a banker, under the pretext of counselling her.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the victim had some problems in her previous marriage and went to the pastor for counselling, but the pastor allegedly hypnotized her and started sleeping with her. In the process, he collected money from her to buy a car and other things. The total sum he took from her amounted to N4.5million.

After some years, she realised that she had been duped and wanted to end the relationship and collect her money. Instead of returning her money, the pastor allegedly threatened to report her to her employer so that she would be sacked. The fear of being sacked kept her from reporting the matter to the police until she was advised to do so.

She reported the matter to the police and the accused was arrested and arraigned at the Ikeja magistrate’s court. He pleaded not-guilty to the charge and was granted bail with conditions. Residents around the church premises, however, confirmed that the pastor was arrested and arraigned in court. The matter has been adjourned till 25 May, 2009, for further hearing in.

The only way you can solve a problem is by acknowledge you have a problem and thereby seeking for enabling solutions to deal with the problem.At the moment Nigeria is failed state and we should stop deceiving ourselves that its otherwise.Everything and almost everybody has failed the country,,,but if you tell me that Nigeria can get through this state of failure, I will agree with you on the condition that we would start doing what is right.We can not continue like this and expect that things would suddenly become good and fine.

my advice for those in diaspora is that they should never make the mistake of going back home to marry,,,a friend of mine made this mistake and he is living to regret the action.I also know of a guy in texas who married a babe from naija,,this lady got to US,went to school to study nursing,eventually she started dating other black americans even after 2 kids.At the end,her husband was beaten up by these american guys,,and this hangered the guy who now as a result frustration killed the lady in question.
Nigeria has changed dramatically if you want to marry either in US or Naija,pls first thing is to use your head! Don't marry a girl because you think she can be morally upright cos she is from African,don't marry a girl cos you think she was well brought up,,there is more to marriage tha all those.Whether diaspora or Naija babes, there is no guarantee!

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo will write a book on the historical background and growth of the Latter Rain Assembly, a church headed by fiery preacher, pastor Tunde Bakare.


This was announced on Sunday, by the pastor, who said he recently received a call from the former president asking him to furnish him with the details of the church since its inception. The lawyer-turned pastor, who sounded a bit comical while making the announcement before church members, said Chief Obasanjo told him emphatically that the church has made so much impact on the country and beyond and he wants to write a book on it.

According to Bakare, “someone just called me and said he was going to write a thesis on this church. He said he wanted me to tell him about the Latter Rain Assembly and how come the church has grown with so much impact on the country. “This person said he would appreciate it if I could send it electronically. This person is Aremu Olusegun Obasanjo.”

He, however, told his congregation that he was not going to send all that Obasanjo needed alone since, according to him, he does not constitute the whole church. He promised to make available to the church members the electronic mail address for them to send in their contributions. Pastor Bakare has been a religious and social critic as well as fearless in speaking the truth to religious leaders and those in authority in the country, especially on issues that concern the welfare of the country’s citizens.

This, some members of the church think, may be the reason the church was singled out by the former president, who recently graduated from the National Open University, where he studied Theology.

Following the stalemate in the Ekiti re-run election, prominent Nigerians, including constitutional lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay, Pat Utomi, Senators Olorunnimbe Mamora and Ben Obi, Yinka Odumakin and Femi Falana, have concluded that there are signs of a failed state emanating from the country.




In his view, Prof. Sagay juxtaposed the Nigerian situation with that of Ghana, South Africa, Sierra Leone and Liberia, in terms of electoral priorities and arrived at the conclusion that Nigeria can be rated as a failed state, and as such, an international disgrace and embarrassment. The legal luminary, who spoke with P.M.NEWS at the First Abraham Adesanya Memorial Lecture, held in Lagos, yesterday, said, “South Africa is a larger country than Nigeria in terms of geography and here we cannot conduct an election. It is a national tragedy and honestly, we are beginning to show signs of a failed state, because a state that cannot conduct an election is going to fail. There is no two ways about that.”

Stressing the importance and usefulness of the report of the electoral reform panel at this critical period, he said the challenges currently faced by the country include lack of integrity on the part of those carrying out the reform. “Aside this, the Nigerian politician does not believe that there is a risk in going into politics. You can lose, but he is determined to win by hook or crook. “This is our culture. If they can conduct free and fair elections in Sierra Leone which was just coming out of war, then Nigeria is an international disgrace.

“Not only have we failed, most of us have given up. I am very depressed.” For the Vice Presidential candidate of the Action Congress in the April 2007 election, Ndi Ben Obi, only determination and courage on the part of the electorate could do justice to election malpractices in the country. According to him, Nigeria is gradually disappearing from international recognition owing to its shoddy handling of critical issues in the country.

To him: “the area where the voting is taking place is less than a senatorial district. Nigeria is gradually being cleaned out of the map of the world and until great minds that can replicate the virtues of Pa Adesanya are found again, we would remain flat on the ground with our belly.” Economist and presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress in the April 2007 election, Prof. Pat Utomi, said the Ekiti election debacle holds ominous signs for the country as Nigeria can no longer match other nations in terms of international respect.

Sounding philosophical in his submission, former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and currently a Senator, Olorunnimbe Mamora, claimed that both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the politicians have deviated from their laid down rules of ensuring a successful election. “See the situation in Ekiti where you find people forcefully taking away ballot boxes and putting pressures on INEC to declare false results. These are not elements of democracy.

“It is a pity that we conducted elections in just about one-third of a state and yet, we are unable to get it right. “What is happening in Ekiti is a shame to this country as far as I am concerned,” Senator Mamora said. He called on Nigerians to start asking for the report of the Electoral Reform Panel headed by Justice Mohammed Uwais, adding that the interference with the provisions of the report was uncalled for. “Mr. President in his wisdom set up the panel and they went round the country and what they have come up with is what you can call the will of the people. All we need at the National Assembly is to fashion it into law and nothing more,” he said.

The Publicity Secretary of the Afenifere Renewal Group, Yinka Odumakin, told P.M.NEWS that, with what is happening in Ekiti, the country might be heading for war in 2011. He described the situation as a terrible contradiction of the ideals of the late leader of the Pan-Yoruba Socio-Political Organisation, Pa Abraham Adesanya. “If he were alive today, he would regret the state of mockery and shame that Nigeria has degenerated into.

“Ghana had three elections and the winner emerged without going to the tribunal. What a shame on Nigeria,” Odumakin said. He agreed that the electorate were becoming conscious daily as the Ekiti election experience shows; that the electorate are now ready to make themselves important in the political process. “If this could happen in Ekiti, then there would be war in 2011, if there are no free and fair elections in the country,” he told P.M.NEWS.

In his reaction, Femi Falana said: “Once again, the Independent National Electoral Commission has exposed Nigeria to ridicule before the comity of democratic nations by bungling the conduct of the re-run governorship election in 62 wards in Ekiti state on Saturday, 25 April, 2009. The shameful exercise has demonstrated beyond any shadow of doubt that an electoral body which cannot conduct a credible election in some wards in a state cannot be entrusted with the responsibility to conduct a fair and free general election in 2011.

“A simulated stalemate has occurred due to the refusal of the Peoples Democratic Party-led federal government to accept the legitimate decision of the Ekiti State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Ayoka Adebayo, to cancel the election in Oye Local Government on account of large-scale violence and the rejection of the illegal results smuggled into the collation centre at Ido Ekiti. “On Wednesday, 22 April, 2009, Professor Maurice Iwu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, had announced, at a press conference at Ado Ekiti, that the re-run election would be cancelled wherever there was violence.

“Having conceded that Mrs. Ayoka Adebayo, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, is the only competent authority to declare the winner of the election by virtue of Section 70 of the Electoral Act 2006, the press conference addressed by Professor Maurice Iwu and the three other members of the INEC on Monday, 27 April, 2009, was totally uncalled for. The statement credited to Professor Iwu that fresh re-run election will take place in Oye Local Government is illegal and unconstitutional.

“The directive of the presidency along the same line is equally illegal and unconstitutional. Since the Resident Electoral Commissioner has rejected the illegal results in one of the local governments, her decision cannot be varied by either the INEC chairman or president Yar’Adua in the circumstances. More so that the re-run election was cancelled in two polling units at Igede Ekiti in the Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government on account of violence.”

Others include Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (retd), Air Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe and the President-General, Ohaneze Ndigbo and Ambassador Ralph Nwechie.
