gambojimeta: .... I think he wanted to play both sides as a beautiful bride to grab the better suitor, extracting as much largess from both. Putin on the other hand don't do competition.... "If I don't have you, no one will".... sort of thing. |
obailala:Ukraine is just a territorial grab, that's all Putin's delusions of a grand Soviet state.... the resurrection of the Bear... which he has nursed ever since he saw the collapse as a young KGB officer and has called it the greatest strategic mistake ever. He wants Ukraine to be the next Belarus, (a country he will annex in the future whenever he pleases). |
anonymous1759:Doesn't work that way. NATO is not a Sunday afternoon tennis club. For a country to be admitted it must meet very stringent political, economic, legal and military requirements. The latter is one big hindrance to Ukraine. Its military's TRADOC, equipment and systems are essentially Russian and NATO will not incorporate them into its systems. This is the problem Turkey has with NATO that has threatened to end its alliance. Turkey moved to purchase and commission Russia's S400 air defense packages and NATO feels it will compromise its strike capabilities via intel leakages. Zelensky should have moved quickly to reform his military and join NATO. Now that dream is over in our lifetime. |
But why didn't you join NATO all these years. You cannot play chicken between two elephants.... you'd be crushed. The moment you were elected, you should have gone straight to Brussels and in weeks had NATO troops on your soil. You created a vacuum in your country Russia is seizing. Now you have lost the West for decades to come.... or at least the lifetime of one Vlad... the Impaler.... ![]() |
jude33084:Depends on his training, competence and the resources available to him at that instance. He has the advantage of cover and stealth, while they are in the open. Field Craft 101 says he has all the aces. |
Banks need to upgrade their infrastructure and build impregnable fortresses at a cost that may require the closing of some branches, but will certainly save lives. |
Benwallt:Liverpool is occupied with the League Cup, I think. |
DoggoneDogg:And after installing a "puppet' as you say why didn't the United States secure him with troops and tanks the same way Putin has supported the breakaway regions or his own puppets in Belarus and . The facts are clear. Yes, the West seek a democratic Ukraine that can potentially be an ally and a member of NATO but no one is falling heads over heels for that. It is Ukraine rather under this President that wants closer ties with the west but in reality still has major obstacles to cross to be a full member of the EU and a member of NATO. It is even on record that the US has not had good relations with Ukraine right from the Obama era and especially with Trump. So to call the President a 'puppet' is just misinformed to say the least. If the US wants a puppet, they are well able to prop one up. |
Ewedegubbler:Just cannot understand why a lot of folks (by their comments) do not understand this. Mr. Putin knows this, the US Congress knows this (both hawks and doves), NATO members know this... Only less informed Nigerians think otherwise. The United States will say and do exactly the same thing if 190,000 Cameroonian troops were massed along our eastern flank from Lake Chad to Bakassi. They will warn, threaten and sanction Cameroun and encourage us to defend ourselves as a sovereign state. If Cameroun eventually invades do we expect US troops to just land in Nigeria and start fighting, no. How many troops have they sent since we started our war against islamic fundamentalists..... even though we are allies with them in that cause. They will only come into a fight if they are obliged to under agreement. That is how it works. Ukraine should join NATO. |
Just like I said somewhere else. "The West will only respond if there are binding commitments popularly known as treaties to that effect. When there are difficult decisions to be taken involving war particularly against a mighty adversary, where the resources of the nation are required it takes more than just the will of leadership to mobilize military resources. In democracies the people through their legislature will require legal commitments before their sacrifice for a lot of reasons. So, to fight Russia is not a small thing. It will take the entire nation of the United States to do that so the authority to do that must be cast in stone. The US will not go to war with another superpower just for the sake of it or to embellish egos. But it will do so if it has as a nation PROMISED TO PROTECT another as a NATIONAL AGREEMENT. This it has done for much of Europe under NATO. This it has not done for Ukraine. Biden has no obligation to protect Ukraine with the might and the resources of the United States and for such a situation and against such an adversary Congress is unlikely to give him permission to trigger any agreement because there isn't any. If it had there will have been American men, means and machines stationed in the Ukraine immediately such an agreement was signed. You do not defend an agreement after the fact. America has combat troops in every NATO country whether they are threatened or not, same with every ally it has agreements of protection with such as Japan and South Korea in Asia." |

Gaabasky:Remember that Saddam invaded Kuwait and annexed the country, which was a strong ally of the United States. There was a clear resolution in the UN and since Saddam did not back down war was inevitable. It was the second gulf war that was inexcusable. What got Qaddafi out was the report implicating him in the terrorist attack on PANAM flight 103. As for Afghanistan, that was where Al-Qaeda was based and its infamous leaders Osama Bin Laden. Once again the Taliban was asked to give him up but they couldn't..... wouldn't so the CIA went after him. The rest is history. |
Miroslavv:Afghanistan essentially bankrupted the Soviet Union and led in most parts to its eventual demise.. On the other hand the American economy continued well despite Afghanistan. The American pull out was more out of 'nothing to be gained' rather than 'everything is lost'. They could have stayed there for much longer if they wanted. Vietnam on the other hand was a real bog and no one could tolerate the mounting casualties in the face of intensifying communist fundamentalism. It was a total loss to America. |
4four:Hmmm..... |
Gbyte02:Hmmm.... I wonder what Roman thinks about all this.... Hope the Brits don't turn against him and force him to give up Stamford Bridge... |
This is not a safe thing to do at all. Gas stations have safety and fire prevention devices that will not be present on the streets. There are lots of things that can go terribly wrong. |
Johnrake69:Most of those munitions are not serviceable. Russia just does not have the resources to maintain them. |
frankson1:Ukraine is not a member of NATO so there are no obligations to fight for or with them. But when a country invades another, particularly in Europe the consequences are elevated. |
Sheyi15:Stop the war how? Putin's end game is to reconstitute the Soviet Union forcefully. Ukraine is his first port of call. How is that the West's fault or what can they do. If Putin turns on Nigeria for instance the way Hitler turned into Africa in 1941 for her resources, what should the west do? It is up to those countries to defend themselves. PS. The reason why the Allies went after the Nazis in North Africa was because Hitler was heading for the Gulf and its oil resources which will have prolonged the war in Europe. So the West will only support Ukraine to the extent the war does not endanger any NATO country. |
erubati:I understand the Constitutional encumbrances (which we should do away with as soon as possible) but I repeat, there is no visionary leader in the face of such monumental challenges that will remain silent, waiting for a so called time table. It is just unimaginable that in a country in such dire straits, a year to elections not a single candidate is telling us where we are, where we can be and how he intends to take us there. Just a year fa..... haba. How are we so daft in this country. And I am not talking about calling public rallies or arranging townhalls or even press conferences. I mean just responding to a journalist here or there at the airport lounge, in the supermarket parking lot or at the local ATM. You barely see the press running after them for these because they have no idea of what they want to do in/with power. We know most of them are practically empty headed. It is only power they are after, not governance and so become victims to 'cabals'. That is where so called mandates get hijacked. When the principal has no substance leading into elections. It is when they get elected they start thinking about the problems and seeking solutions. Who employs staff on that basis for his personal business. What is the basis of any Nigerian boldly saying that he will vote for this or that person when there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ON OFFER.... NOTHING.... |
erubati:I totally disagree. What you are talking about is just politics without conscience. For how can you have a leading candidate that does not consider the state of the people he is expected to lead. The world over, leading politicians ALWAYS comment on the state of the nation and forcefully fly their own ideas and ideologies whether in or out of electoral season. Even as recent as the second Republic that was the case. I don't know where this recent trend of silence onto elections came from but I surely know the roots lay in our electing autocrats this recent two presidential terms. Even Atiku as serving Vice disagreed openly with OBJ and pushed his own ideas which is not a bad thing. But for you to say everyone keeps quiet and few days or weeks to an election come up with some watery manifesto short on any form of details as to how to bring us out of the monumental challenges we have today is just not acceptable. That is simply not a working democracy. If you must be a leader of a serious minded country your passion for its success must be absolute. And if you are truly passionate your mouth will be overflowing with your vision, plans and programs so that electing you will become a certainty after public and widespread critiquing of your ideas. |
ButterBurger:Russians unlike what is in the public space are not republican in nature. They are not bold in their demands for universal liberties right from time. If the Bolsheviks were not overthrown they will still be a monarchy like most Gulf states. Its no surprise Putin has been there for decades while its neighbors grow their democracies. And being an ex-spy, steeped in the traditions of authoritarianism, I don't see any group having the balls to kick him out. Few individuals have tried but found no universal support amongst the public. This is a country headed for some serious hurt. With the stability and relative prosperity of much of Europe it must really suck to be a Russian citizen when you have the potentials to take the lead from Germany over all Europe. |
ButterBurger:I don't know about America and the exact balance of powers at the moment But the issue is Russia and Russians. Are they solidly behind their President on this .... out of their own free will. Do they fundamentally believe in his vision.... to recast the 'Soviet Union'. And are they prepared to live and die for it. That is what matters. Putin will only survive this if he can get his country on board. That I'm not sure of. |
Manlikechoba:Is this an official release by government or a prank. The language is shocking. A lower grade school kid can do better. |
ButterBurger:Indeed. There will be those thinking of putting an end to his regime. But since the world is filled with historical tragedies, they are unlikely to succeed. |
ButterBurger:Of course. There are fissures at the highest levels of the Russian government. It is equally dangerous for Putin. Watch out in the coming days and weeks, for the pruning out of pacifists and their replacements with ultras which history tells us will lead to the ultimate failure of the vision, no matter how far they initially progress. Classic example was Adolph Hitler between 1936 to 39. More recently, with the Gulf wars on both sides of the divide as happened in Sadaam's government and the government of George Bush. |
BritishNaija:Full blown dictatorship. His country knows he is not doing the right thing. But they will obey him out of fear. And you cannot ultimately win and permanently succeed if you are not fundamentally established in leadership and your people are not completely sold out to your vision. |
dettolgel:What if he is senior special adviser to Vladimir Putin.... bla, bla. Face the topic. You know what this is all about, his marriage, his home, his family, so why the side slide.. |
Hmmm.... citizens are angry with their Reps.... But we told you so. That there is no Legislature in the world sold out to cooperation with the Executive. That is just autocracy.... which only destroys nations. Check all of political history. Even the Holy Book says God asks us to come reason with Him. Because He knows we cannot do everything He says and He cannot so everything we want. Where is the reasoning in the leadership of Nigeria. That's why we are driving deeper into this mess with no brakes. |
seunny4lif:Na so. The Hubble telescope. Missions to the Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, various asteroids, the Helios project, Sun... Which one has Russia done apart from Soyuz and ISS of which they are just there to spy on NASA and the ESA. What are they doing with all their time in space.... zero, nothing. At least the computer you use today and microprocessor tech came from the Apollo program. I repeat, what has Russia contributed positively to the world outside machines of war..... and the 'official language' of the space station; whatever that means to typical Nigerian tribalists... Even their space ports are located in Kazakh. Russia is the only country that came out victorious in the Second world war that is still under siege and has basically not moved forward to become a light to the world. Even China that suffered badly in the hands of the Japanese and was essentially crushed and cremated and had to rediscover itself not once but twice, the second time to Red Communism has unshackled itself and is becoming a leading nation in ALL fields of endeavour, contributing positively to humanity. Russia is a big disappointment abeg. |
Can anyone point to one single thing this country called Russia has contributed to the advancement of humanity, with all their so called scientific prowess or is it that they are just cursed of the devil to excel in destruction. |
If she could be booed, wonder what will have happened to her principal, the FCT Minister himself.... probably have rained rotten eggs on his sorry head. Probably the worst administrators of the FCT since the capital moved from Lagos. |
