DanseMacabre:All this is caused by a lack of an all encompassing plan or strategy to combat Covid 19. From where I stand you begin to get the air that the goverment thought this thing will be done and dusted in record time with little effect on the present healthcare infrastructure. They probably thought it will be like ebola whereby a committee could resource the whole project over a period of a few weeks, but if they had studied what had hapoened in China and compared the depth of capacity to what we have in Nigeria, they will have quickly realised that this pandemic will need the mobilisation of thousands of healthcare professionals and hundreds of locations. Unfortunately till now the scenario persists. We are fighting Covid 19 with not just one hand tied behind our backs but with just two fingers and a thumb. If the entire healthcare system is not MOBILISED against Covid 19, primary, tertiary, public, private, we are going to see what we have never seen before. Covid is now at the grassroots. People are walking into their GP's unknowingly with the virus with devastating effects. |
Lack of PPE akin to sending soldiers to fight Boko Haram with sticks and stones. Some will br heroes and die trying. Others will walk away. The NMA I think sent out a circular warning doctors of the dire consequences of trashing their oaths and absconding from the frontlines but say nothing about the health and safety of their members. Quite contrary to their counterparts in Britain and America thay spare no effort in reminding their goverments of their obligations towards not just part but the entire health sector. Nigeria I repeat remains a very peculiar country in many things, now reflected in the covid pandemic. We are the only country I know that has completely segregated its health sector into pandemic and non pandemic parts. Pandemic led by the NCDC is getting billions in funds for kit, infrastructure, logistics and welfare. Non pandemic is getting absolutely nothing even at tertiary healthcare levels. I toured one today. It is just sad. I mean NOTHING by way of resources. To those doctors I saw it was like Covid was happening in another country while we all know it has breached NCDC containment and reached community levels where everyday individuals seeking normal healthcare services are infecting healthcare staff and sentencing them to death simply because they are often asymptomatic and attended to by folks who are not kitted to. I will not even speak about private hospitals some of which have unfortunately closed shop or been forced to at this time when ALL hands should be on deck. This is what all the various health unions should be doing, talking to goverment to find a solution to the critical lack of protective gear and not threatening their members. |
Covid 19 is beginning to take its toll on Nairaland. Noticed more than a few regulars have fallen silent. Even new posts ate lean these days. Hope you folks are okay. |
Supersymetry:But Oga. The sun is a product of nuclear reactions, fission rections specifically, so what is the problem with having your own little sun in a lead box under your control. The sun is a fantastic source of energy. The problem is the control. It is far more difficult to convert solar energy at the cheap without the bigger problem that the earths backs down every 12 hours or so popularly called night. Can you imagine what will happen to the earth and humans if you didn't have night. Just compare a microwave oven to a barbaque. People will burn alive. Night time is the biggest factor making renewables of all kinds impractical at the top end of demand curve and expensive at the bottom end AT THE MOMENT. |
Wow, elephants can indeed fly. |
Tekzyflex:Use your head. Wike has done exceptionally well to aid the containment of the virus spread in Rivers due to his tough stance. Rivers State is a highly vulnerable state due to the oil industry and its attendant international, regional and local traffic by air, sea and land. Ordinarily by now it should be a hotspot as far as Nigeria is concerned. He should be commended for keeping people safe there at all costs if you are a person thaat values lives. |
danboy1234:You should be punished severely. Do you know how much it costs to print those bills. You have a phone and data and have not heard about a bank account.....? |
cRobo: Brave man. Keep cool. Covid 19 is not a death sentence. There are treatment protocols coming through. But like for every infection, timing is critical. |
Nbote:Told you the NCDC is irrelevant. They have been submerged by the tide. Once the imported cases from overseas ended, so were they. There is no where in the world were Covid 19 is fought from a central command bunker. |
dejt4u:It is understandable. When they see their local 'Discolite' climb poles and pylons without an iota of safety protocols and leave transformers dangeruosly exposed they are scared. I too will be scared if I thought Peace Mass Transit and Peace Air were one and the same and those daredevil drivers will eventually find themselves in the cockpit of a Boeing 767 bound for Dubai. Yes, we are notorious for carelessness, impunity, nepotism and every social malaise under the sun that should ordinarily make nuclear power plants dreaded propositions but aircraft simply donot crash at higher frequencies in Nigeria than in nations with nuclear power plants which says our habits are not insurmountable. |
ogalandlord:Their cost per unit of energy generated remains too high for now. If it was that easy everyone will have dropped others. You can see that the average Nigerian can only afford to keep the basics in his home or office running on renewables. No one loves NEPA but renewables are pricey for similar capacity on any scale. A poor country/continent does not start its industrial journey by adopting the most expensive route. China is number one in installed solar capacity today but before then they were number one in the dirtiest fuel, coal. Their route was coal to wealth to ethics. Na peson wey chop dey obey lockdown. If we want to be Mr. Nice Environmental guy and develop at the same time in a timely manner we simply cannot avoid going nuclear. |
wirinet:You need enormous industrial support to drive down prices and serious R&'D. Nigeria can get there but not tomorrow. No nation waits for optimum technology before developing indigenously. Let us adopt the technologies that are available. If we are going green then nuclear remains the best for now. Nuclear plants pay for themselves in about 5 years. By the time the nuclear fuel is spent in say 25 to 30 years, perhaps renewables will have become viable. |
KingAzubuike:Have you seen the Niger Delta. Why are you still pumping oil there. 76 babies lost per 1,000 births due to pollution (not counting adults) in the Niger Delta while the peak radiation deaths in Chernobyl was 26 per 1,000. Perspective is often lost in things. It is similar to what you have in transport safety where few believe air travel is the safest mode simply because the unit death count and publicity is much higher. Today folks shout pandemic up and down amd the world is shut down because 150,000 have died while the humble mosquito is quietly doing its thing putting 400,000 people in caskets every year with alarming regularity. If you ask anyone what is the most dangerous animal out there, they will say it is the lion or snake which most will not encounter in thror lifetime. A typical nuclear power station will deliver between three to ten times the energy of a typical coal, oil or gas fired stations. That energy multiplier alone builds in significant safety benefits. The 5,000 megawatts we claim to generate can be provided by just one large nuclear plant or no more than 3 meduim sized ones. No silly pipelines to vandalise. You can then protect it with a whole division of soldiers if you wish. |
Absolutely yes, until renewables are affordable. |
maybet081:Peak projections and all other analysis are determined by data, data is determined by testing. The greater the ratio of those tested in a given population the more accurate is this data and the more predictable the pandemic behavior will be. If like Nigeria you have tested just about 0.005 percent of your population you simply cannot be sure of anything, where it is, what it is doing and how it is likely to progress. Will you make that investment decision if you have just 0.005 percent of the facts known to you about the business? |
BlackSpanner:You have been told several times that virus cases are recorded cumulatively in line with global practices. I just don't see what is so difficult in understanding this. If you cannot understand simple reporting on the pandemic after 3 months, how will you be abrest with the finer details which evolve by the hour. How will you be able to protect yourself. |
yerokunphilips:You don't reach the warfront before discovering you cannot win. That is the responsibility of the Intelligence Corps or Institute of Strategic Studies.... to see the enemy from afar and like the Holy Book says, 'diligently observe.... carefully consider.... counting the cost. And if not the Holy Book says, 'go meet thy adversary while he is still a far way off... and make peace with him. These are the things wise people, of wise nations, led by wise leaders do. For people not of the faith your 20/20 saying should be: 'Prevention is better than cure'. Oh, citizens, bind these thoughts to thy hearts and follow not after lying gangs of 'we are ready and prepared' deceivers. Who say what thine ears want to hear when they cannot even save themselves. If there is any Nigerian who hasn't woken to the reality that you have to take the word of those in authority with all the salt in the oceans should remember that the defacto number two man in Nigeria is gone....just like that, to a disease they claimed they were in control of. Good morning dear Nigerians, if you understand what that means. |
janeedema:Noted. But I hope these views will hold true if the gender positions are reversed and you will not be screaming 'cheat', 'animal'...and all the other colorful words. Then you will remember that is should be 'in sickness and health... till death do us part'. |
cococandy:Typical female. Avoid the substance of the issue as long as your gender is in question. Suicide because of infidelity is what this is all about, don't try amd twist the key narrative. There is nothing else to point out in this tragedy. Stop blaming the victim and displaying crass inhumanity. When women cannot bear children they seek sympathy, tolerance and understanding, things demonstrated by this incident they cannot give their partners if the tables were turned. |
Anumpama:Nothing good can come out of it but potential disaster. We are created in the image of God having no biases around our seed. If God doesn't treat us that way then where do we get such nature. |
I talked about this yesterday. Nothing new to add. The pandemic is full blown. Now that it is out in the public there will be an overdrive to cover it up. |
I think the biggest lesson Nigeria will have to learn out of this tragedy apart from the need to get the best people into elected offices, is that Nigeria must become self reliant. To make the things we need and walk away from the things we can't. |
babaolofin:Well at least their goods are resilient....except if the Samsung's and Apple's release new models before they can offload stocks .But spare a thought for those with stocks of non essential perishables... |
Nnamdinaija: Oil economies will be the most resilient because 'hospitals will require fuel for generators....'...kai, there's nothing you will not hear. I think you should turn on your telly.Oga. There is no demand in the world right now. All the crude oil tanks in the world are filled up. Oil right now is worthless. The only hope is for countries like China to resume FULL production first to consume the excess they have stored since March. But how can they resume FULL production when the world is not buying stuff at the present and will not buy much in the short term because no jobs, no money and plenty of loans to repay. On Channels yesterday the analyst was clear. The best we can hope for, anything near normal, positive GDP will be from September. Nigeria's oil receipts this year will not surpass 50 percent of budget at best. |
AntiWailer:Oga. Tech cannot raise our GDP. It cannot build our railways, refineries or make face masks or vaccines. The most resilient economies are those with large reserves built by manufacturing. And goodnews. You cannot do manufacturing from home. If everyone sits at home 'teching' the world will simply implode. |
Nigeria is just peculiar. You know there is big trouble when doctors and other medical professionals are being sent home because hospitals are shutting down due to legislation whereas in other countries even the retired are being called back. You know there is big trouble when distribution companies go about cutting power to homes that cannot pay the bills. Do I blame them, no. No one will pay for electricity at the expense of food but what happens if the power sector collapses altogether or is subject to the high maintenance of the rainy season... hmmm.... |
Torino234:The person you quote is not abrest with what is going on presently. |
Omooba77:WTI is selling at -37 dollars a barrel meaning that American producers are PAYING their customers to take their oil for May deliveries. When asked why the could not just close the taps, they say closing the taps will mean sealing oil wells and this will be irreversible in some cases causing monumental losses and bankruptcy. Global storage capacity for spare oil is at 95 percent. It is just a matter of time before all producers are completely grounded. US oil is completely worthless now. |
Omooba77:Slow fellow talking to slow Nigerians. This post should have been out by January 31 when you saw the people of Wuhan behind cages in the name if lockdown. Then you should have started shouting at goverment to close borders immediately by February 1st and rallying the Nigerians you tell this tale to support you. But no, you will support or sit idly by when ignaramuses called folks like us haters of goverment and haters of the elected leaders. What is the point of this post now.... It is incumbent on the citizenry of any nation seeing to move forward for the citizens to be in charge of their destiny. Oga. This battle against Covid has been lost both economically and medically since February. Listening to Boss Mustapha the ambience around his speech is one of siddon look. These guys are at the mercy of Covid 19. They are just reacting to anywhere the wind blows. No strategy to fight it and win back Nigeria. And I have said how this matter will end. Nigeria will stagger on until civil disobedience arises then they will yield to poverty with the pandemic still out there, losing both the economy and the Covid battle. Nigeria will be the first to relax the curfew without reaching the peak. |
MadeMan01:Then tell me what you will use for ground attack in civilian areas to support our troops and attack the enemy in proximity. An aircraft that flies at 600 kmph and with a minimum ceiling of 5000 ft abi.? You know little about these things please sit down. |
nedekid:Helicopters are high maintenance platforms. Just ask the airforce. They cannot form the backbone of any military outside the countries of production in an effective and economical manner. Secondly Brazil will not sell to you because the manufacturer Embraer is jointly parented with the United States and thus covered by various US goverment defense procurement laws. Anyway the specs of the American version is superior to that of Braziian models. |
DonMustafa:C'mon. The F35 is an air superiority fighter in the airforce frame with capabilities that have no bearing on the objectives we seek in the north east whatsover. It has very limited ground attack capabilities (the F22 Raptor is a slightly better ground attack aircraft) and it is an integrated weapons platform which means it operates best as a component of a battle group receiving and transmitting data to lead and support operations as the case maybe. Nigeria does not and will not have in decades to come anything near the capabilities to support or deploy such a weapons platform effectively. |
