destinie2019:The first part is absolutely correct but the second is not. It does not vindicate Wenger because a successful business will certainly rely on credit at some point and sports is no exception. The biggest clubs borrow massively to invest which Arsenal does not. Arsenal relies entirely on income alone for running the club while other big clubs such as Real, Barcelona, United, Liverpool borrow to invest and in growing their brand through success are able to payback. FIFA, UEFA and the FA have no issues with that. The challenge is always with the new era clubs and came to the fore in the Roman Abrahamovic era when massive unsustainable amounts were pumped into Chelsea to gain success. The soccer bodies were worried that a bubble was growing that could destroy the entire league and so financial fair play rules were made. What I am saying is that even before the advent of the American billionaires, Russian oligarchs and Arab petro dollars, clubs have been spending way beyond their cash earnings only that these were regulated by financial markets which are stricter than even the soccer bodies. Arsenal does not spend, simple and it reflects in their performances. Dangote will not be building a refinery today if he depended on earnings from cement and sugar to do it. All businesses require leverage to make rapid progress and sports is an ultra competitive business. |
NeoWanZaeed:You can borrow from banks with a caveat like Madrid does a lot meaning that you will have to return the money from income but what the soccer bodies donot want is cash flow that is not sustainable. That is tantamount to buying success. |
When I say restructure the vocal majority say no. Once again I will say this. A time is coming when even restructuring will not be able to return the horse to the barn. Let those who are and will be victims continue to play russian roulette with their lives and destinies. When the next elections come by your lives and destinies should be the first and only consideration in electing any candidate. Those who will pull Nigeria together to negotiate how we should live together and make new laws to that effect. Such are the reasons folks in the developed world choose their leaders. What matters most to them not useless sentiment. Watch their antecedents now so they don't sweet talk you and swindle you of your votes then. Your life will depend on it. |
nameo:Oga don't waste your time with folks like that. Like me you have but just one vote. His type are the deciders at the polls and the result is what we see of Nigeria. We will all suffer it together. Let them continue to roll in their sentiment towards their pet failures. |
Eteka1:Okay. But the number one reason for ambulance calls which consume a lot of resources to the goverment and consumes huge resources to the NHS is drunkeness and alcohol poisoning. That is a society that cares despite the fact that alcohol consumption is a personal issue and drunkeness a product of habit. So what do they do. They save lives as a priority then seek to and pass legislation around age of consent, alcohol content in liquor products, business hours for bars and taverns and the almighty taxation to make it morw expensive. All because the goverment knows it has a responsibility towards the health of its citizens despite the liberties they enjoy. These are the countries that work because the people donot act out of sentiment to protect mediocre leaders but put them under severe pressure to act in favour of every citizen they preside over. And that is why folks like you fall over themselves to emigrate to those well run countries but unfortunately cannot summon the courage to rise above sentiemnt to make yours similar. By the way suicide is a public health issue in most developed countries I know of. Read up and get informed. |
Offpoint:I am not. Can you explain how a fellow like me who you have never met is greedy. |
DuBLINGreenb:But if true do Canadians walk about naked ?... No they don't. And will never. That is why God made clothes for man. The reason is called sin. |
Eteka1:That is the social or civic responsibility of goverment. You have child welfare there for those who abuse children. Every suicide has a reason and society led by goverment does not fold its arms and watches people kill themselves and others. Goverment can as well say it is not its business who contacts the HIV, it did not send anyone to u guarded sex. But that is classic third world thinking. You seem to have a mental disconnect as to what goverment is all about and I can understand it comes from generations of feudal rule followed by colonial rule that has made goverment appear as a heavenly establishmemnt and its members some divine untouchable beings to be worshipped and adored. Oga. Goverment is simply a set of people we chose to represent us to handle our collective needs and project our collective ideals under a law we collectively make. If you feel goverment shouldn't care it simply means you donot care. That defines the kind of society a people chooses to live in. Little wonder Nigeria is like this. Personaly I just cannot understand why Nigerians have a very low expectation of themselves. We live very brutish, uncultured, uncaring lives. Numbed by nothing. Its inhuman please. |
..Uses her femininity, will have been a better line. Beauty is subjective. Can't see any here. |
Eteka1:Oga. Whether you like it or not. Every death is a goverment statistic and ultimately a goverment responsibility. When the statistic becomes visible it will certainly become a political issue because folks will be seeking explanations, answers and solutions from the leadership they elect. If I run my car into a ditch and kill myself you may say it is not goverment"s business, it is my fault, but when hospitals are getting filled with corpses and cases it will certainly become a political issue because the role of the goverment through the FRSC will come under scrutiny. Once again donot be beclouded by sentiment. The number of suicides on that bridge alone in the past few years is visible and a cause for concern and the goverment should wake up and take note. It is a political matter. They either solve it, slow it or make way for those who care and can. That should be your minimum duty as a citizen of this country who cares about his fellow man above his personal interest. To hold those in office accountable for the welfare of all men and women of this country. When a gun man runs riot in the USA and shoots people it instantly becomes a political football. The argument doesn't start and ends with the mental state of the shooter. People question gun laws and regulation, question police profiling, question the second amendment. Here we hold no one accountable except blame the victims. |
omoiyalayi:So what is the function of goverment if not for the well being of the citizenry. Some of you out of sentiment are just completely out of touch with the reality of your existence as citizens of this country. So why do.you vote ? The goverment should be seriously concerned if citizens are killing themselves FOR ANY REASON. It is like saying what is the business of goverment if corona virus enters Nigeria, did they send anyone to China ? It is like saying what is the business of goverment if I kill my wife, did they marry her for me. That is just plain silly. The goverment is accountable for the life and death of every citizen and in civilised societies the mental healrh of citizens is goverments responsibility. Please there is a limit to politics. Stop the sentiement. |
Eteka1:Oga you are speculating. She is certain. The man's suicide may be out of personal reasons or not. Goverment actions on the ither hand particularly the one in Lagos and at the centre will certainly drive many to suicide. No doubt. How many tricycle riders in Lagos would have contemplated suicide over the past few weeks due to loss of income and debts on investment. The Arab spring started in Tunisia when a poor hawker's goods were seized and he burnt himself alive. The impact of goverment's decisions can have widespread and devastating consequences on the most vulnerable in society. Goverment's good policies and acts can bring prosperity to a people and nation. Goverment's bad policies and acts can bring penury and misery to a people and can drive those at the edge over. Be sensitive. |
fairfora:Really sad. Are there no NGO's that can take up the challenge and keep watch on that bridge day and night ? |
I am happy everyone is talking about 'the law'. No longer what he or she wants but what the law says. It is a very good step towards civilisation. You want something outside the law, change the law, simple. No sentiments. Let us stop the fuel that fires those that call this country an animal farm. |
Just look to your right and see the reason why. Loose earth. I call it the PPP syndrome, Public Private Partition after what I observed in Calabar many years ago during the days of Donald Duke. Magnificent roads, drains and streets lights everywhere but just a few feet away are shanties, mud brick buildings and every badge of poverty imaginable. My conclusion was that matters of the environment were as much about poverty as they were about regulation. Matters of the environment are joint responsibilities between the goverment and the people. No matter how rich a goverment is, how much access it has to resources including the loans it can take to build nifty roads and bridges, if these services are meant to serve the wretched of the earth, the system is not bound to produce the expected results. The gutters like most in Nigeria are blocked simply because the folks living there cannot afford to keep them unblocked and clean. No goverment in the world will pave a highway to a man's 'bedroom'. It is the responsibility of inhabitants of that area to ensure that their plots are either grassed or paved to ensure sand or dirt does not wash into these drains. Even the modern ones in Abuja that come with sand traps cannot cope with the level of erosion that comes with bare earthed surroundings. And no amount of legislation can compel a man to pave his yard or grass it if he simply cannot afford it. In Europe or America there are standards for property owners to comply with but here.... what do you do. Even the great Donakd Duke had a huge battle when he lauched the annual carnival event and part of the requirements was for residents especially those on the carnival routes to have their fences 'made up', painted and decorated. He was called all sorts of names.... poverty speaking. |
The military high command should take out a few hours at the public library and read up what the organisation Amnesty International is all about. They are like a determined mosquito gnawing at the scrotum of merciless dictatorships.... just ask members of the past Abacha regime. They give and take no prisoners.... no pun intended. It is the military that will be fed up eventually. Every country that has an an active, operational military has issues with them from the United States to Congo but they are not bothered even if you take a picture of them having tea with Shekau.... They are the self appointed referees in all global conflicts so no one really likes them. But they sure are effective. |
logon599:Glasgow Rangers too. Now back at the top where they belong and slugging it out with eternal rivals Glasgow Celtic under the able leadership of the amiable Stevie G. |
All I hope for is that the widespread rage seen at the decision to approve him to office by the people is sustained and evolves into a citizen movement for good governance. The new governor must be made an orphan until he wins the hearts and minds with qualitative, visionary leadership. If Bayelsans give up now the consequent socio-political blow back will be devastating. Mr. Governor. You did not win the election, your opponents threw it away. My advice to you is to handle the affairs of office like the Christian salvation.... a precious but undeserved gift. Use it in total circumspection. |
gw4s:You guys are just amazing. Is this what our democracy has been reduced to.... |
Sad day for democracy. The people of Bayelsa have lost (or been robbed of) a golden opportunity to change the narrative of decades of misrule. |
themaestro08:Evidence is that the virus survives for as long as 2 whole weeks. That is just terrible. Only the pressure wash of the rainy season can sanitize the atmosphere. |
This is no laughing matter at all. If this thing hits Nigeria we will be in very, very serious trouble. Forget Ebola. This thing has a transmission ratio of 1:2.5. We just do not have the medical facilities to cope with that kind of speed. People will be literally dying on the streets. The only ray of light in this dark, dark matter is the mortality rate which is low. But the recovery rate is equally low meaning that few people are leaving the hospitals cured. Once again a country like Nigeria that is all but bankrupt, a people not known for hygiene and good environmental practices and a bastion for fake and counterfeit drugs.... it is just scary.... We just pray for the rainy season to come earlier than seasonal. That is our only hope. May this thing just not reach our shores. We are not capable. This epidemic is something else. |
Righteousness89:I hope this is nonsense building is not one of the 'tangible things' he has to show... I hope this is not your standard, expectation of governance if not your right to vote should be withdrawn. |
budaatum:Indeed. But you can only be impeached for a crime. Last time I checked incompetence isn't one so I'm afraid till 2023 we must bear.... ...but that is why you don't vote on a whim. You vote like you are writing the examination of your life. You study the candidates hard, know their stats intoto and project their actions by 'worked examples'.... I guess this cerebral way of doing things is too hard for Nigerians to bear so we suffer what we are all responsible for. You can be swindled but of greed lets you there you bear part of the blame. |
CheedyJ:But that is the reality. Every insurgency feeds off the reaources that abound in their sphere of influence. These insurgents are basically citizens of Bornu, sons, daughters, fathers, mothers.Tjey are not from Mars or Pluto. They are recruited from amongst the citizenry. That is why they appear to have an unending strength, a vast resource pool and open supply chain. I see nothing wrong with that part of the statement. I think the shock of it is simply because of the narrative for many years and administrations previously where the blame was placed squarely on the goverment. It is that festered propaganda that is biting back. I have said it countkess times that fundametalist insurgencies have no military only solutions, no goverment only solutions and certainly no Presidency only solutions. For Nigerians such as you and me to have bought that thought process and propaganda for so long says so much about the quality of citizenship as much as leadership. We just sit down in Nigeria and tell each other lies everyday. When reality hits disappointment and anger is bound to occur. Can't you see part of his statement, typically 'supermanish' about his electoral promises made in the past to end Bokoharam.... Did any right thinking person think it was going to happen at the snap of a finger... |
One part of his statement, 'I believe there is an improvement...' is very deep and thought provoking and opens up to the public the inner workings of the President and his goverment. Basically that there are two realms, one of belief and one of reality. It is difficult for a man to operate both in tandem because you are either a man of faith or a man of figures. So it is possible that there are two or mors school of thoughts going on in goverment and the way they see situations and handle challenges vary and this may not be restricted to security challenges but those of the poor economy, weak institutions, etc. Much as I donot join the one goverment, two leader proclaimers but I think this gives fuel to those who say he is perhaps not entirely in charge as a 'Nigerian' President is expected to be. But to be Commander In(deed) Chief and be 'believing' not facing and acting out reality is quite disturbing. |
Hmmm.... probably enough ethanol there to send one of Elon Musk's satellites into space.... |
The siege against the institution of the family via the God ordained relationship of marraige rolls on with the failings of couples and the failures of men and women taking centre stage and unfortunately driving the narrative. May it not deter those who recognize its enormous potentials as a viable tool for sustainable prosperity, the delivery of life changing legacies and the fulfilment of the purpose of our creation as ordained by God. Failures of men must not set the narrative. |
Charmingrascal:Told you folks who were looking for a messiah that no matter how good the breed of corn it can never prosper planted in a swamp. There is nothing any President can do to make Nigeria of today better than the Nigeria of last week. The structure of this country has set her on a course of decline that no rudder can counter. Nigeria is basically unworkable. This is not how nations operate. Said it countless times. At the end of this regime all we will get are a few roads and bridges built here and there, nothing more. Nothing fundamental can be put into play that will radically alter the course of the average Nigerian from his level of despondency. Nothing fundamental to show for his electoral investment. |
mvem:You are not totally correct. The United States is no longer active in that conflict. All combat troops are out save some observers. Their interest previously was to destroy ISIS which gained ground due to the power vacumn and the second was to protect the Kurds, an ethnic minority the Turks have persecuted for generations. Sadly they have been left in the lurch. Secondly the Christian minority you speak about are almost non existent now in Syria. Due to the war most have fled to Lebanon and others into Europe. To say they are fighting side by side with the Syrian Army in a country that is increasingly hostile to them is just ridiculous. President Bashir has not given them the kind of protection his late father accorded the Christian minority. As he has moved closer to Iran so his country has grown more intolerant of other non Shiite faiths. |
'They capture our soldiers and execute them.... We capture their soldiers and later release them....', sticks to my mind like a leech.... This is beyond a dangerous situation for the military's relationship with the goverment. This kind of thing should never be made public thoughtless of with much fanfare. It is just not wise. This sort of thing nearly caused the former and late President DeGaulle of France his life in the hands of the OAS. |
I have said enough about this tragedy but what I wish to add is simple. There was a time I argued hard and tried to persuade Nigerians of the need to have a National Assembly that was truly independent and capable of its Constitutional duty of checking the Executive. People argued that cooperation rather than confrontation was key to development. Here we are. Time will always prove things. When Nigerians are ready to get their goverment to fear and respect them then some progress might be possible. We as citizens are far too ignorant and incompetent to have a better goverment and experience a better tomorrow. |
