It’s cheaper but add tax and it’s not so cheap again

docsaj:
You're joking, thought it would be cheaper getting a laptop over there undecided

Travel / Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 16 by sillysassysally(f): 10:02pm On Jul 23, 2019
Hi Everyone,

I want to start by sincerely apologizing for going MIA since I got here. Life happened so fast and it didn't help that I didn't have a laptop. I have only just started settling down after all the hassle.

Landing gist...
It was pretty straightforward and didn't take time. The only question I remember the border official asking me was which school I was going to and what program. Then, of course, I was asked to show my correspondence letter and CAQ.

Canada...
I am currently attending McGill University so I'm quite comfortable speaking about Montreal.
1. French everywhere! I was so surprised - even my youtube ads changed to french! Better to start learning french to optimize your experience but if you don't speak French, it's still fine because most people are bilingual.
2. Beautiful city... people say its the best city to jaiye in Canada because things are always happening! I think last week was about Real Madrid (they are in Canada for a tour), then the week before that was jazz festival week... Needless to say, its a really fun city!

Myths people have about Canada
1. People tend to believe that once they leave Naija, they'll begin to live their best lives... It's not really true - especially if you don't have money. Since I got here, I've actually battled depression because my school work is so tedious, i don't even think I'll be able to work part-time to cover my living expenses. If you are doing a one-year program, it's possible that your schedule would be as rigorous because for most masters in Canada, its usually two years so you can imagine the "rushing" they do for one-year programs. So with no time to work, and with steady expenses, you can imagine the stress I've been going through just merely thinking about my situation. Here's my advice to those planning to come to Canada, if you cannot afford living expenses and you plan to work part-time to cover your living costs, please do a two-year program. That way, you'll have more time to spare to work and it'll be reasonable for you to work and still have enough time to commit to your academics.
2. Taxes here in Montreal are a freaking 15%! I bought my laptop and paid taxes of $114! Needless to say, buy your laptop before coming.

Things i'm grateful i did before coming here
1. I'm grateful I packed garri, indomie, etc because when you come here, expenses and bills would hit you like a hurricane - especially in the first few weeks where you have to start paying for a phone plan, rent, bus pass, feeding, etc. Im grateful for the many things i didn't have to buy because i already brought them from Nigeria - I even carried toothpaste, cream, perfume, etc. Once you come here, you'll have a lot of expenses to make that you'd be super grateful if you already have some little things sorted out.

I'm happy to answer any questions anyone has for me. smiley

Goodluck to all TRV hopefuls, University admission hopefuls and GRE/GMAT hopefuls

I used Royal Air Maroc for my trip. Personally, I had no complaints apart from the fact that the wifi in that their airport wasn’t working. There was also this Nigerian man whose mother needed a wheelchair to get out of the air bus and they just kept posting the guy...

Apart from the above, I think they’re one of the cheapest. I spent like 190k for my trip.

Bracha:
Please leave Royal Air Maroc. Their racism and unprofessional behaviour is on another level. If you want cheap, use Ethiopian airline.

I think there are rules around how early you can go to Canada prior to the start of your program. 30 days or so. The earlier you book, the higher the $ you save

Tlontin:

When do you think it’s okay to move because any time August its sure to get to over 400k if not 500k

Approved!!!

Online application

Applied 3/6/2018
Biometric 5/6/2018
Medical 25/2/2019
Passport request 3/4/2019
Passport received 19/4/2019

My husband got admission into university of Alberta for his masters, he applied for study visa and I applied to accompanying him.

Our application lasted for 10 months plus ... We even forgot about our application and moved on with our lives.

Then I took in (pregnant).
To cut the long story short!! We traveled on the 23rd/4/2019 to Canada. I was 38 weeks pregnant (9 months plus) then, I made up my mind to travel and God on my side the journey was very smooth!! There was no immigration issue etc.

I delivered on 3rd of this month. My baby is now Canadian citizen.

June, July and August 2018 applicants that are still waiting please keep your faith alive because it will only delay but not deny. Thank you all

I don’t think there’s any need for you to complicate things. If you program has asked you to apply for a co-op work permit, it means that the work is an essential part of the educational program itself.

For instance, imagine an international student going for a 5-year engineering course where in the student would have to seek industrial placement in his 4th year. That industrial placement is part of the curriculum and part of the students grade. The student does not have to explain the work. He only has to explain his academic plan in the context of his visa application.

Hence, you don’t have to start mentioning the work thingy so as not to complicate matters. It is part of your academic program

akanbijm:
Please my course involve that I should apply with a full time work permit along with the study permit. How can I convince the Visa Officer that full-time work permit along with my study permit which I am about to apply for is not an avenue to secure a good job in Canada. Please the guru in the house I need your contribution.
Travel / Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 15 by sillysassysally(f): 9:48pm On May 29, 2019
The people applying for work permit are people going for programs where work is an essential part of the curriculum.

For instance, for my program, 50% of the curriculum entails working in an asset management company which is compulsory for all students. Hence, were were advised to apply for a co-op work permit alongside our study permit. This does not weaken my application in the sense that the VO would think I won’t come back. It’s merely a part of the program requirement.

OptimusPrime21:

Huh... almost everybody here is applying with a work permit.... who isn't going there to secure a job... if u start trying to explain that, the vo will see you have a motive or you even tot about it.. leave that one... all u need to worry about is showing the vo you are genuinely going for studies and coming back, get your financials intact and tight...

I think so but I’m not sure.
On my visa counterfoil, there’s a place that said “Kenya”
Kishkosh:

I submitted on Monday ma, at the Lagos vsf centre.
My app was online as well .
Wait , are you trying to infer that it's the embassy location where one''s app is treated that will stamp the passport ?
Travel / Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 15 by sillysassysally(f): 9:42pm On May 29, 2019
How are you imputing the tracking ID?
Kishkosh:

Submitted on Monday . It was an online application ..... I'm thinking maybe there's something I'm not doing right in when inputting the tracking ID no
Travel / Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 15 by sillysassysally(f): 11:44am On May 29, 2019
I honestly have no clue.
When did you submit your passport and what office is treating your application?

Kishkosh:

I'm having same issue . I can't track my PPT, I sent a mail to vsf and got a response that " Please be informed that your application is still in the embassy for processing."

@sillysassysally, any idea what's going on ?
Travel / Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 15 by sillysassysally(f): 11:44am On May 29, 2019
I’m so sorry about the delay you’re experiencing...

Maybe this has to do with the office that treated our applications. Was yours treated in the London office?

OptimusPrime21:

Not one bit dear, still saying no records. My contact inside vfs says it's still processing meanwhile it's been 11working days now... plan on mailing cic today or 2moro... this delay is delaying my preparations and flight plans...

Hi guys,
I’m asking for a family member.

Is it possible to go for biometrics with only the copy of one’s passport? I have a friend who applied for a UK tourist visa but her passport is with them. Does she have to wait?
