RomanceRe: Please Help Me..... She Openned Up To Me After Our Family Introduction. by tsmith(f):
Ignorance is bliss..... And a lot of immature minds abound

There is hardly any negative impact on the number of abortions a lady has! Infact a lady that has aborted is proven fertile than a woman that hasnt despite unprotected sex.

There is actual proven research too on increased fertility of sexually active women compared to virgins or secondary Virgins ( abstinence).

For ur rest of mind n assurance, you may wish to have a fertility test..... But calling off the relationship on this instance alone is not justifiable.

To buttress my point, I'm also speaking from experience...... You can term me touch n go.... I have had to tie my wound coz I wAnt no more babies n I am not a fan of contraceptions due to other associated health risks.

PS: I'm too old n matured to respond to side or snide comments.

It is well.
Many blaming the parents for leaving their children with complete stranger may not understand what working parents are passing through.
Our maid left about three days ago, I know what I am facing as a father to care for the kids with my work, now they are on holiday.
I could do that because I am my own boss unlike my wife who must leave house daily by 6am.
With desperation, you may even leave your kids with the devil and risk/wish they are safe.
I felt this issue is more of the new Generation not being communal enough, we too like OYO (on your own). We don't ask for communities help; friends, neighbours, church, mosques, relations etc because we do not want to be bothered when they need help. When I was growing up, an hours visit could turn into holiday. We spent our holidays with our cousins in Ilorin, Ibadan and they did vice versa. Now everyone is too selfish and into their own. It's holidays, are you saying you don't have any meaningful rapport and relationship with anyone that can help out with the kids?

Likewise with the missing kids, its a new housegirl, no crime in bundling them all to a neighbour or friends until the housegirl has passed the grace period. I still do not honk its right for the parents to have taken such a risk with a stranger less than 24hours!

And for those that said she could have still done it 4 months later down the line, I disagree. Obviously the house help mission was criminal, if rhwy had a grace period checks in place, like above for example, her motives would show through because her intent is not to come n work, she'd fail in doing that bidding right one way or the other rhat will tell you she's no good!

I have been to various concert Nigerian and international artists alike,i was in wizkid concert awhile back, and i wasn't surprised cos i wasn't expecting more from him anyway ..but the way he lip synced was embarrassing, all he did was bring girls with big booty on stage and lip synced all through,no live band no nothing!
So i heard Asa was coming to hamburg, my girlfriend got me d ticket 3 months in advance..was really pleased
cos she's one my favourite artist.
When we got to the concert yesterday,it was packed to the brim with white people.then i said to my girlfriend it will be a shame if I'm d only black guy in here considering the fact that hamburg is packed with black folks ...we looked around then she pointed there,a black girl; I'm like no she is missed!

At about 9p.m punkt Asa came out with her band, man she was beautiful! Her performance was out of this world, never knew she could dance too especially while performing to her Yoruba classics. .Meanwhile i was still looking around for my kind...then comes one of her hit songs "jailer",in d middle of it she said what i was thinking "is there any Nigerian in d building "?then some Large voices chorused from d back..we dey here oo! grin grin grin
After d concert, there where about 10 of us.We went back stage telling her security that we want to see our sister!about 10 minutes later she was with us chatting ,laughing cool cool..she is a very humble down to earth lady speaking in a crisp Nigerian accent mixed with yankee........
here are some photos and a video. .............P.S i didn't prove read, pls forgive any typo!
She is by no doubt a great performer; one of the best out of Nigeria. Like you I been to a few naija events and Medicore is the word for many, that I blacklisted many unless the tickets are free.

Hubby & I flew from England to see her perform in Barcelona 2wks ago and it was well worth it. She is proper fit too, with a body like Serena Williams, she and her backup singer, Janet have some great moves. Unlike you we weren't allowed backstage, I would have really love a pic with her, coz my kids adore Asa.

Okay, I dont always do this. Here is my wahala. I am married, living abroad, my wife is 7mths pregnant. We are expecting our baby soon.
Now wifey isnt working, cash is abit tight. An owing some money, we haven't started buying things for baby yet.
I intend to clear my debt in the next 3 mths, and start buying baby stuffs. Now, as am the sole bread winner I want to stop paying my tithe, settle my debts and begin to live Within my financial means, wifey is insisting we pay tithe.
Also, we have Bills, rent and she aint contributing cash. I can't keep asking people for help, I don't like this life style. Presently wifey is vexing. She just went out. So what do you all think, an I wrong.

Please mature comments only.
I personally feel that I need to live within ny means this new 2015. No more extravagant living.
Op, hope you are aware that what you call your salary has already been taxed 10-20% as it were! So paying your tithes (whether on gross or net earning) is like Trying to feed the multitude with 2 fishes and 5 bread, almost an impossible task unless you are Jesus.

It's easy for those living in Nigeria or JJC (wife inclusive) to say pay your tithes, but the realities on ground in the westerner world is totally different. No miracles would pay or wipe away your bills or make you rich overnight. You can't afford to live by faith, but rather you need to live by what's on ground. if faith comes, then all good let it be the icing on the cake.

In the times of the bible& tithing, the church was it n done! There was no other taxes; I.e. council tax, other income/PAYE taxes, no TV licence to mention a few. The westerner world is already programmed to allow you have just enough to live on, not excess. Tithing is excess. To top it up God is understanding, do what you need to do regardless of what your wife says. With time she'd make up to the realities on ground. I can boldly say there are very few Nigerian especially who live in the UK and pay their tithes to the details. They give as they can

FamilyRe: Aunty Babyosisi's Token Christmas Gift For An Unemployed Youth by tsmith(f): 10:27am On Dec 03, 2014
@ babyosisi, nice initiative. Could I just make a few suggestions, as there are more pledges/ donors, what about having 2nd, 3rd positions gifts too. So that way the initial scope of making someone's Christmas is met, but yet spreading the love to more.

U can consider this sharing ratio, 1st position $100, the naira donations, call card etc, 2nd maybe just $100, 3rd $75 or $50. Or u cld even v categories beat write up, most motivational story etc. Or even for those with qualification and those without say just GCSE.

I know a young man I introduced to nairaland, very brilliant with good results both GCSEs n initial jamb, but no means to further his education. He's driven and hustling to survive, I feel people like him would benefits and should qualify for this.
FamilyRe: Man Returns To Children He Abandoned For Eight Years (With Video) by tsmith(f): 7:03pm On Oct 27, 2014
Actually very worrying that the kids were just released to him. It's good he's come out of hiding, and there is closure to what became of their father and why they were abandoned, however in a saner society, all due diligence should be carried out to ensure the father is fit to care for the kids; from an emotional, financial and social perspective.

Also the teenage girl is at danger of Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA); the curious phenomenon where relatives who have been separated for years are gripped an intense physical and emotional lure upon reuniting. Mum missing, man still poor, girl no longer the baby he left and possibly developing, all these is just a dangerous mix for disaster. This may not be the last we have heard of this family, and I'm afraid it may not be good news!!!

FamilyRe: Any Divorcees In The House by tsmith(f):
@ op - I'm not divorced but have been close to, having filed for one last year Jan.

How does one get over it?? Does one ever get over it? Especially with kids involved, it's part of one's history which can't be rewritten and would continue to rear it's in the future.

One thing I did was to plan ahead. I started writing things down from the relevant 'why do I want out' to the mundane 'what I want from the future'. Not as a yardstick but helped me put my thoughts, actions and reasons into perspective.

Of course I knew it was going to be tedious, sometimes lonely road, but funny enough I took it as a challenge and an adventure and was so looking forward to it!

I knew as a woman and mother, I had to be more guarded and meticulous with my plans and decisions; from training the kids, to feeding their emotional needs so they were not negatively impacted by the divorce, to ensuring that they turned out better and happier to the dismay of many who felt divorce wasn't the right decision. To our finances, so that per adventure Mr man refuses not to pay alimony, we could sustain our lifestyle and standard of living, then to myself; physical, social and emotional wellbeing. Knowing that for me to be able to offer the kids the best, ME had to be in a good and right place.

Got back to being fit and looking good. A lot of psyche and talk ups and most especially the strength and support of good friends and family. At the end of the day, with perseverance and determination there was sure to be silver linings in the cloud and it could only get better.

You'd do well I'm certain, you've taken the 1st bold steps, which is normally the hardest! The rest wld fall into place. And please, please I beg you, DATE. Don't lock yourself up, dating doesn't necessarily have to lead into marriage or a serious relationship, who wants another so soonhuh But it does wonder to the mind as a form of entertainment and just knowing someone still thinks you are hot and desirable. You don't v to introduce every tom, dick n Harry to your kids until you r certain where d relationship is heading, but do create some me time for yourself outside of the home front. If the men ain't approaching, go on dating sites, there are loads out there that can specifically cater to your case and situation. Atleast you are certain of one thing, that anyone that would approach you in there is okay with a divorcee with kids, unlike some immature dude that would pick race at hearing the D or K word!

Nelson Mandela also used this poem as part of his inaugural speech in 1994, however the poem itself is by Marianne Williamson

Our Deepest Fear

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.

We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.

Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won't feel insecure around you.

"If I had my time over I would do the same again. So would any man who dares call himself a man."

"Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people." (Our religious and political leaders should learn from this)

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

FoodRe: Dont Peel-off Yam Skin Before Cooking, Dietician Advises by tsmith(f): 6:10pm On Nov 26, 2013
The writer meant for the peel to be consumed, Consuming yam, potato peelings etc is beneficial to the digestive system, as these are high in fibre and up a great percentage of the RDA for fibre.

A lot of people buy fruit and fibre cereal, grains etc but do not actually understand the context behind it. We throw away a good supply of fibre everyday. Fibre is the insoluble and would not change its form during digestion (not stored or absorbed unlike carbs). Insoluble fiber binds to water and sweeps material through the digestive tract more efficiently. (less constipation, no need for opa eyin, agbo jedi and the other stuffs people use for pile). Brown bread, wheat etc are other examples of fibre where more chaff is used in production.
Christianity EtcNigeria Needs A Pope Francis, Martin Luther King Or Desmond Tutu by tsmith(op): 9:49am On Nov 15, 2013
I was reading recently about an expatriate's view on Nigeria, and one thing struck a cord with me...... he said the greatest offence to many Nigerians is to say you don't practice any religion of faith. (can't remember actual words). Truly the country can boast of been very if not most religious in the World. With some groups having close to billion followers worldwide.

It's also worth noting that some of the greatest reforms all over the world were driven by religious individuals using the force of their following to drive positive changes. No surprise there that these people are revered and honoured in history today.

It's got me thinking why aren't the religious leaders in Nigeria using their following to drive social, economic and political changes? Something has got to kick start the much needed change and revolution Nigeria is so in need of. Is there no true man of honour? Why are the religious breed more interested in manipulating their followers minds to the benefit of their individual pockets, flying in private jets, building/congregational competition or causing tribal divide and massacres.

Below are a few examples of people that have used or currently using their positions to drive reforms

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolentcivil disobedience. King has become a national icon in the history of American progressivism.[1]Born Michael King, his father changed his name in honor of German reformer Martin Luther. A Baptistminister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycottand helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. With the SCLC, King led an unsuccessful struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, in 1962, and organized nonviolent protests inBirmingham, Alabama, that attracted national attention following television news coverage of the brutal police response. King also helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he established his reputation as one of the greatest orators in American history. He also established his reputation as a radical, and became an object of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's COINTELPRO for the rest of his life. FBI agents investigated him for possiblecommunist ties, recorded his extramarital liaisons and reported on them to government officials, and on one occasion, mailed King a threatening anonymous letter that he interpreted as an attempt to make him commit suicide. On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality throughnonviolence. In 1965, he and the SCLC helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches and the following year, he took the movement north toChicago. In the final years of his life, King expanded his focus to include poverty and the Vietnam War, alienating many of his liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled "Beyond Vietnam". King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., called thePoor People's Campaign. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Allegations thatJames Earl Ray, the man convicted of killing King, had been framed or acted in concert with government agents persisted for decades after the shooting, and the jury of a 1999 civil trial found Loyd Jowers to be complicit in a conspiracy against King.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu (born 7 October 1931) is aSouth African social rights activist and retiredAnglican bishop who rose to worldwide fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. He was the first black South African Archbishop of Cape Townand primate of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa (now the Anglican Church of Southern Africa).Tutu's admirers see him as a man who since the demise of apartheid has been active in the defence of human rights and uses his high profile to campaign for the oppressed, though his consistent opposition to Israel and the United States has made him controversial. He has campaigned to fight AIDS, tuberculosis, poverty, racism, sexism, the imprisonment of Chelsea Manning, homophobia and transphobia.

Pope Francis, who was elected in March, has struck a different tone to his predecessor on a range of issues.

Catholics in England and Wales are being urged to complete a worldwide survey into how they think the Church deals with issues such as contraception and gay marriage.

Pope Francis launched the unprecedented questionnaire earlier this month.

The responses will help form new Vatican guidance for an estimated 1.2bn followers to be published in 2015.

He said recently the Church was too focussed on preaching about abortion, gay people and contraception.

And he made headlines when he said it was not up to him to pass judgement on the sexual orientation of clergy.

The 39-question survey seeks views on issues such as what "pastoral attention" can be given to those in same sex relationships.

It asks whether Christians today are aware of "how morally to evaluate different methods of family planning" and whether "this moral teaching is accepted".

The survey is intended to give Catholic bishops around the world information ahead of a special meeting to discuss the Church's policy on the family next autumn.

Although there is no suggestion the Pope intends to change formal doctrine or belief, the survey is being seen by some observers as a further sign of his intention to reform the church.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi(pronounced [ˈmoːɦənd̪aːs ˈkərəmtʃənd̪ ˈɡaːnd̪ʱi] ( listen); 2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was the preeminent leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India. Employingnonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorificMahatma (Sanskrit: "high-souled," "venerable"[2])—applied to him first in 1914 in South Africa,[3]—is now used worldwide. He is also called Bapu (Gujarati: endearment for "father,"[4] "papa."[4][5]) in India.Born and raised in a Hindu, merchant caste, family in coastal Gujarat, western India, and trained in law at the Inner Temple, London, Gandhi first employed nonviolent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of theIndian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, but above all for achieving Swaraj or self-rule.Gandhi famously led Indians in challenging the British-imposed salt tax with the 400 km (250 mi)Dandi Salt March in 1930, and later in calling for the British to Quit India in 1942. He was imprisoned for many years, upon many occasions, in both South Africa and India. Gandhi attempted to practise nonviolence and truth in all situations, and advocated that others do the same. He lived modestly in a self-sufficient residential communityand wore the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl, woven with yarn hand spun on a charkha. He ate simple vegetarian food, and also undertook longfasts as means of both self-purification and social protest.Gandhi's vision of a free India based on religious pluralism, however, was challenged in the early 1940s by a new Muslim nationalism which was demanding a separate Muslim homeland carved out of India.[6] Eventually, in August 1947, Britain granted independence, but the British Indian Empire[6] was partitioned into two dominions, a smaller Hindu-majority India and MuslimPakistan.

I know I have trending/fashion foresight, ordered my car in white last year, only to discover white is the on trend colour for many new cars; evoques audis etc.

Even though my car is a coupe cabriolet, - it's has much more kerb appeal because of the pearl white colour. Contrary to the quick to get dirty view, when it's dirty or has dust on its it actual glows in the sun.

I love love my car in white and won't trade not for any other colour... I get loads of compliments too, especially with the roof down.
FoodRe: Why Is Nigerian Food Not As Popular As Chinese? by tsmith(f):
it's mainly about the packaging and promotion, migrant representation and allure of the Country and people.

I'd take my points from last; the accepted and known international cuisines are popular because people have either had cause to travel there, work there or live there, on return they rave about the food and introduce such to families and friends etc. China & Japan are business hubs etc, on the flip the Nigerian economy and terrain is still dangerous waters to many, and we do not enjoy the same scale of travellers like these countries do.

Another thing that can make a cuisine popular is the community representation in an area. Like in the UK for example, Indians and Jamaicans were used to build the London underground etc. Many have remained, inter married and mixed. Indians for one still tend to group together and have a community feel, thus their cuisines are becoming internationally acceptable. Many know about the Jamaican rice and peas, jerk chicken etc, however due to the hostile and unpredictable view of Jamaicans, would tread carefully from trying out just any Jamaican restaurant.

Now from a packing and promotion point of view, i'd speak from personal experience, eating out for a regular westerner person is not just about taste of the food, but also about the presentation, ambience and general customer services. Our friends here in Bristol opened a Nigerian restaurant about 2 years ago. As a Nigerian i felt the food was a lil over priced compared what's available in London eg. £5 a meal. But i do understand their view, cause theirs isn't the regular run down take-awayish dingy that serves up authentic food, they went a step ahead to have a buy out lease on an existing restaurant, do it up nicely, you know the full works, bar area, seating area, nicely printed menus etc. Also featured in Groupon promotions and National dailies but were however lacking in the customer services department. The result is nothing but negative reviews on tripadvisor etc. On the flip, a Jamaican restaurant just opened up in Bristol a few months ago, and its hard getting reservations 3 days ahead. That's the different of customer services.

Truly our food is delish and could equally contest with Chinese, Thai, Indian, Portuguese etc, and it's such a shame that we aint promoting as should. Whe Nigeria becomes a business/tourist hub so would our cuisine.

@ Efemena - you are right I feel rather strongly about the thread and issue. I have stated my observations with facts and chronicle, it's for the mods to accept or deny.

In the same vain, I have noticed a bit heavy handedness and flippant acts/statements from mods etc (not directly to me, as I don't have a problem playing by the rules) however at the rate Social media is growing, I'm only looking at the bigger picture and potentiality of Nairaland. Seun needs to start thinking of getting professionals in rather than fishing for members that are happy to volunteer time.

I don't completely agree with your explanation.

As at the time her suicide contemplation thread was hidden, ivy blue was still very much active on the nairaland n other threads, like the french one.

Also, account deactivation or not, I thought one couldn't close a thread, only edit posts etc. I don't buy the idea of as a result of her account being deactivated, it therefore affects every other posts on there.

As part of my burial plans, I have asked that my hubby announces my death on nairaland. Nairaland to me had become more than a faceless community and there are relationships I've established here that deserve to known if I die. My hubby contrarily doesn't do nairaland, Facebook etc but would without a doubt want to carry out my wishes. Is that the same way you would close down the thread without asking for prove? Or what prove is admissible in your courts, a Web link or newspaper sighting? Not everyone is going to go the Bawolowo way

Yes I appreciate n totally understand rumours shouldn't be encouraged, however there is something called benefit of doubt and innocent until proven guilty. We complain about the govt not having regards for human life n rights, but yet do same on a supposed learned n forward looking forum.

A bit disappointing in my opinion.

This has been on my mind, so I might just as well get it off!

I do not support or agree with the closure of Ivy blue initial depression/suicide contemplation thread. Here someone reached out in times of need and was lucky enough to get help from the people and kind words on the thread. I remember making a couple of posts on this thread only to find out later that the whole thread had been closed, and all posts hidden. There was no notification whatsoever to contributors, nor justification in my opinion.

Do you know the thread could be just the solace that She(or others) draw on period of lows! I have read several times ppl say a thread has encouraged them, kept them going etc. A good example is the 'Adjusting to a life as a widower' thread by Serubawon, this thread has been on for 7 years and the OP himself talks about how the thread had continual helped him through his journey after losing his wife until now that he's found love again.

I was not surprised to hear she did succeed in killing herself, nor amused when the thread announcing her death was closed. I don't get what you are driving at as mods, but I will advise that you get experts in matters you are not well versed. You can afford it, and can please stop relying on pro-bono mods off the forum.

I think nairaland has passed the level whereby mods or Seun himself act as demi-gods; you own a great responsibility to the followers and nairalanders that have made the forum what it is today and not just take actions like you are dealing with kindergarten kids. Like everything that has a beginning, their is potential end. Actions like this can truly bring a downfall to the forum. Remember, once it was Hi5 etc, but now its FB, twitter and who knows what it would be tomorrow.

It would be your loss if you closed down my thread or fail to respond to the issues raised

There was no notification whatsoever to contributors, neither justification in my opinion.

FamilyRe: Help A Nairalander Achieve His Educational Dreams by tsmith(f): 1:34am On Oct 23, 2013
BTW, there is a hot Kwara State history going on here

https://www.nairaland.com/1484373/proposed-national-conference-case-kwara#18933753

It might be worth bringing this thread to their attention as you never can tell, there just might be some 'Who knows who' on there that could pull the right strings to a.) open the portal or b.) accept the payment someway c.) grant some concession to those who haven't paid.

Especially as Nigeria is all about knowing the right people.

i'd like to be a part of this and can make up the os 14500, however I think the bigger issue is having the opportunity to even pay the fees. So are you saying only online payments are allowed? What about students that may not have internet access? I didn't realise Nigeria has gone that techy!

Pls send me the bank details.
