Viraltrends123:CCTV in the washroom? Seriously, bro? |
I love Doja. She's such a complete artist. Congratulations to them. |
Ebubu: ![]() I'm African. My parents are Africans and I have a Nigerian passport... expired but whatever. Don't segregate. ![]() |
Classickj:I don't really think it's just about the message. Or are you saying Wizkid passed more message than every other artist that was not nominated? In fact, taking a look at the past winners, I'm almost certain message alone doesn't cut it. I think the submissions are based on virtually every aspect of music including production, instruments, lyrics, etc. Note that good lyrics might still not pass so much message in the traditional sense of it. A good example of such would be R. Kelly's songs. I mentioned audience in my comment because the business side of Grammy demands that they present known albums in order not to lose people's interest. A great album that didn't go beyond the streets of Lagos would never get to Grammy even if the artist is a messanger of the gods. That's the power of audience, bro. |
Carot:Oh.. no! I don't like this task. Don't make me do this, please. I'm just going to say Yvonne Chaka Chaka has the most impressive hit songs for me. Aren't you forgetting Miriam Makeba (the Pata Pata songbird)? Also, add some Nigerian legends like Christie Essien and Onyeka Onwuenu to the list. Thinking about it now, African ladies really took the industry far. These women get me so emotional even when I don't understand half of what they're saying. |
Ebubu:Well, I learned English at the age of 14 (or 15, can't remember) so I guess I'm also anglophone. ![]() I grew up in Montréal. |
maticar:Hhmm... I actually saw this earlier. Since it's the album getting the award, this could also mean the artistic achievement of the album, its technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to the album's sales, chart position, or critical reception. Album of the year is not usually given to a single person. According to the same Wikipedia, it is awarded for a whole album and presented to the artist, featured artist, songwriter, producer, recording engineer, and mastering engineer with significant contributions to that album. So if it's really about musical achievement, whose musical achievement would be considered? Just the singer? |
Angelfrost:Oh... I see. Definitely a nice album but, in my opinion, it is not the best from her if I'm to judge by her standards. I think she sounds much better when she sings in her local language or even French. Apart from Flying High, other tracks are mostly in English and that didn't cut it for me. ![]() Also, I really don't think she has a very wide range (I'd give that to the likes of Onyeka Onwuenu). Angelique's voice is almost consistently between tenor and baritone (A3?). I think what's mind-blowing about her voice is rather her tone. Her voice is like the sound of liquid gold flowing through a glass tunnel. Where I live, my friends call her wombolombo. Asides her French tracks, they don't understand most of the things she says, but they still love her nevertheless. ![]() She's really awesome. |
Angelfrost:OK, bro. Like I said, I'm not doubting Angelique's superiority. I only said I wish Wizkid had won cause his album was also deserving. I'd like to believe only the 2021 albums are compared and not thier entire accomplishments. As a francophone myself, I don't think you're bigger fan of Angelique than I am. But then again, there isn't nothing wrong in wishful thinking, you know. So tell me, which track in Angelique's winning album really caught your interest? |
Angelfrost:Well, I acknowledged that already. But this isn't about thier musical accomplishments in general but the albums they both released in the year under consideration. And I liked Essence. |
toby345:Let me answer this, please. Lol Actually it depicts lack of composure. Except when used with pleasantries or to express "light note disappointment" (or used with known exclamation words), exclamation marks should be avoided when communicating with people on forums, emails, etc. When used in arguments, it presents you as an uncultured person with rough edges who would rather raise thier voice to overshadow others than have a civil conversation. It's almost a substitute for lack of logic/points. Donald Trump's tweets had so much exclamation marks that people began to question his state of mind. Even when he made great points, those on the opposing side still seemed more logical. When you have a lot of these unnecessary exclamation marks, people read your comment with a smirk because they imagine talking with someone who's so riled up that he begins to bang his hands on the table and spit on people's faces. Again, if it's an argument, the second party would probably become eager to fire back a reply than actually pay attention to what you're saying. I opted to answer this cause I've noticed people use it a lot here. It probably stems from the loud nature of Nigerians. But it's still disorienting nevertheless. |
Let's not bring shame and sorrow to our families. |
CountVersailles:Maybe an insult to the rest of the world (though I'd rather use the word "challenge" ). But I don't think it should be an insult to Africa that the global award keeps coming to continent. If anything, we're happy to, at least, have someone who can bring it home. ![]() |
joviegghead:Well, Angelique is a much bigger artist. This influences the judgement, I guess. Wizkid's album might be better but Angelique's reach is more extensive (both time and space). We try again next year! |
Oh... damn! Wizkid's album deserved this. Angelique is a force of nature. Her coverage both in terms of time and space is wider than that of Wizkid. So even when Wizkid's album is better, her larger audience would always be in her favour. I knew she was threat but really hoped Wizkid would bring this one home to earn me some bragging rights. Congratulations to her. We try again next year. |
What's your take-away from that? Here is the deal; there is no remarkable gas shortage in the US at the moment (at least, not yet) but prices have gone up due to global effects. Just like in Nigeria, petroleum products are heavily subsidized in Mexico. Therefore, Americans that live near the border drive to Mexican filling stations for better deals (the currency difference also gives them some advantage). This, coupled with the fact that the subsidy is becoming more expensive in terms of opportunity cost, has prompted the Mexican government to consider suspending the subsidy. So the few people who cross the border to cut deals are only trying to take advantage of the gasoline subsidy and not that there's shortage of gas in the US (fun fact, we sometimes go from Canada to the US to get certain American products at cheaper rates too). This didn't just start now though. It only became more noticeable. It is no secret that the price of oil is going up everywhere and people are doing different things to cut cost, but let's not make the mistake of thinking the Russian issue is already causing gas shortage in the US/Canada. These countries never depended on Russian gas. Mexico is the 11th largest producer of oil while the US is the 1st. That accounts for something. |
DarkCaesar:Ok, let's be practical, two people can't pray in silence. You can only do that cause you're alone. Since you both pay the rent, I really don't think you can ask them to stop praying or ask your friend to stop bringing hid girlfriend over. However, you can and should definitely tell them to keep it low. Another option would be for you to tell him you want to get your own place and mention the disturbance as a reason. It would be up to him to decide how to handle it. I know you mentioned he doesn't have what it takes to stay alone at the moment, but don't take that decision for him. Also, in order for you not appear as if you're exploiting his financial situation to get what you want, you must be prepared meet him halfway. Hear his suggestions and be ready to make compromises. That's what friendship is all about. As for the girlfriend, don't do or say anything based on assumption, remain neutral with her. The sad thing is that when people bring such issues here, they forget that the people they're asking for advice don't know the persons involved and how deep the relationships between them run. Nairalanders will tell you, "aren't you paying rent, Oga?! Go and assert your rights". That's because we don't know you and your friends. We just don't really care what happens to y'all or how it all ends. As far as we're concerned, you're just a link on Nairaland. You alone will bear the consequences of your actions. Fact is, most of us wouldn't do what we're asking you to do. This is not because we are telling you to do something wrong, but because sometimes, two approaches might be okay but only one is right for the surrounding circumstances. You alone know the peculiarities of your circumstances. That is why you must do what is good for your mental health. |
Infidelity slowly kills your partner. I see people supporting infidelity on the man's side, and it's shameful and inconsiderate. You wouldn't want to subject a woman you love to such agony. You call Nigerian girls useless for sleeping around and in the same breath, you okay Nigerian men sleeping around; aren't you fighting with yourself already? The society is give and take, everything's Nigerian girls are today was enabled by Nigerian men. Don't bring shame to your family in the name of selective Africanism. |
OP, is it the noise disturbing you or the fact that they pray? |
Herdeyholuwa:Unfortunately, I'm not in Nigeria, and trust me, my house is already full of all types of pet animals ![]() But your dog looks great. I'm sure you'll get a buyer soon. |
Adorable |
cocolacec:I'm not into Nigerian politics, but do you realize how illogical this is? So you'd rather see a 25 year old guy presented as an old man in Nollywood than have an actual old man do the job? Wouldn't you be the first to call Nollywood trash if that were to be the case? What do you even call old men movies? Lol... Bro, what happened? |
It's gonna be a tough call, but if the EU manages to find thier way out of this one, it would be disastrous to the Russian economy. Putin took a leap of faith. |
Oh... dear Europe. The US and Canada are not dependent on Russian oil. As the 4th highest producer of oil, Canada's ban on Russian oil earlier this year was only a symbolic gesture since the country had earlier gone from 3% percent import from Russia to 0% in 2020. On the other hand, the US is the world's highest producer of oil. But even these two countries can't save the EU. Japan, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, etc. must step in to save the situation. Imagine what this would to Germany, the EU's economic power house. Besides, even countries that import from other places (e.g. Canada that imports from the US) will have to pay more for less now since there'll be more buyers competing for the limited supply. At the end, we all will pay for it from our pockets. This is the price of solidarity. Nobody said it was going to be easy. |
Dyke15:Euh... I thought you guys were tired of recycling the same set of people. Why still complain about new faces? Just curious. |
Marketgists:Lol... this your signature. OK, let me check it out. |
Lol... Who told the story? The same Julius? Reading the story, you can easily tell it was told by someone who's more interested in presenting the man in a certain light than actually being logical. |
Marketgists:They can go together if the word "request" is used as a noun. As a verb, it means "ask for". Therefore, it would be repetitious to say "request for". However, as a noun, that's not the case. Examples: 1) He requested more information. (verb) 2) I received his request for more information. (noun) In this case, the OP is employing the word as a noun. |
Grammarians.... lol |
Arielle:Well, we can't be asking why she's there for that long cause that's not the bone of contention. There could be a thousand reasons why she's there and if the OP has issues with that, he would have hinted us in the write-up. He deliberately left out that bit cause the reason was satisfactory to him and we're not in a position to question him about that; we'd only be causing more problems. We should be addressing his concern: having fun with his beautiful wife while his mother-in-law is there. Now, back to that. You notice that when people say, "be a man", they mostly mean "go home and do what you want as a man". In other words, they are asking the man to put himself first. But when people say "be a woman", it means, like you said, "put your husband first". Whichever way, it's still the man first. So when you say "if the husband can't be a man, let the wife be a woman", you're still saying exactly the same thing. The idea that being a woman is about putting the man first is flawed and this is not even because of gender dichotomy. Rather, this is because in a situation like this, one is naturally more likely to appease the less understanding person to avoid issues. So being a man/woman should be all about being the understanding person; understanding of each other's plight. Whether the mother-in-law is right or wrong is a different thing, the wife's plight still is very relatable and the husband is in a better position to compromise here. So if the husband's response to the situation is a show of force, then there's a fundamental problem. This is why I suggest they rub minds together to find a way around it, even if it means making compromises as a unit. Can they close the doors? Can they be less noisy? Can they go out to do it? Can they do it during the day when she's in the sitting room? Can they take her to somewhere like church and do thier stuff at home? Can the woman be convinced to go home earlier than planned? A problem discussed is half solved. These things could be inconveniencing but love is more about sacrifice than any other thing and it's just for a couple of months. One day, he would need his wife to make compromises for him too. Peace requires flexibility. |
SmartyPants:Hehe... Poor guy. He seems like a nice fellow. I hope finds what he's looking for some day. ![]() |
